Probe-assisted spin manipulation in one-dimensional quantum dots

We study a spin structure that arises in a one-dimensional quantum dot with zero total spin under the action of a charged tip of a scanning probe microscope in the presence of a weak magnetic field. The evolution of the spin structure with changing the probe position is traced to show that the movable probe can be an effective tool to manipulate the spin. The spin structures are formed when the probe is located in certain regions along the dot due to the Coulomb interaction of electrons as they are redistributed between the two sections in which the quantum dot is divided by the potential barrier created by the probe. There are two main states: spin-polarized and non-polarized ones. The transition between them is accompanied by a spin precession governed by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction induced by the electric field of the probe. In the transition region the spin density changes strongly while the charge distribution remains nearly unchanged.

On the "effective exponent theory" of the Coulomb Luttinger liquid

The "effective exponent theory", developed by Wang, Millis and Das Sarma in [Phys. Rev. B 69, 167101 (2004), Phys. Rev. B 64, 193307 (2001)], fails to calculate correctly the dynamic correlators of Coulomb Luttinger liquid. Main drawbacks are (i) cutting off the Coulomb potential by killing its long-range component, (ii) the absence of non-contradictory procedure to determine the 'scaling cutoff' and correlation functions for true Coulomb interaction.

Dynamic correlations of the Coulomb Luttinger liquid

The dynamic density response function, form-factor, and spectral function of a Luttinger liquid with Coulomb electron-electron interaction are studied with the emphasis on the short-range electron correlations. The Coulomb interaction changes dramatically the density response function as compared to the case of the short-ranged interaction. The form of the density response function is smoothing with time, and the oscillatory structure appears. However, the spectral functions remain qualitatively the same. The dynamic form-factor contains the $δ$-peak in the long-wave region, corresponding to one-boson excitations. Besides, the multi-boson-excitations band exists in the wave-number region near to $2k_F$. The dynamic form-factor diverges at the edges of this band, while the dielectric function goes to zero there, which indicates the appearance of a soft mode. We develop a method to analyze the asymptotics of the spectral functions near to the edges of the multi-boson-excitations band.
