The Triplet Resonating Valence Bond State and Superconductivity in Hund's Metals

A central idea in strongly correlated systems is that doping a Mott insulator leads to a superconductor by transforming the resonating valence bonds (RVBs) into spin-singlet Cooper pairs. Here, we argue that a spin-triplet RVB (tRVB) state, driven by spatially, or orbitally anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions can provide the parent state for triplet superconductivity. We apply this idea to the iron-based superconductors, arguing that strong onsite Hund's interactions develop intra-atomic tRVBs between the t$_{2g}$ orbitals. On doping, the presence of two iron atoms per unit cell allows these inter-orbital triplets to coherently delocalize onto the Fermi surface, forming a fully gapped triplet superconductor. This mechanism gives rise to a unique staggered structure of onsite pair correlations, detectable as an alternating $π$ phase shift in a scanning tunnelling Josephson microscope.

Strange metal behavior in a pure ferromagnetic Kondo lattice

The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP: specific heat and resistivity measurements demonstrate that the FM transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature revealing a strange metal phase. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in this process, injecting entanglement, in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds (tRVBs) into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that the singular transformation from tRVBs into Kondo singlets that occurs at the QCP causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume: a key driver of strange metallic behavior. Our results open up a new direction for research into FM quantum criticality, while also establishing an important new setting for the strange metal problem. Most importantly, strange metallic behavior at a FM quantum critical point suggests that it is quantum entanglement rather than the destruction of antiferromagnetism that is the common driver of the many varied examples of strange metallic behavior.

Large-N Approach to the Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

This paper studies the two-channel Kondo lattice in the large-N limit at half-filling. In this model, the continuous channel-symmetry is spontaneously broken, forming a channel ferromagnet in which one conduction channel forms a Kondo insulator, while the other remains conducting. The paper discusses how this ground-state can be understood using the concept of "order fractionalization", in which the channel magnetization breaks up into an emergent spinor order parameter. By integrating out the fermions we derive an effective action that describes this symmetry breaking and its emergent collective modes. A remarkable observation is that topological defects in the order parameter carry a U(1) flux, manifested in the Aharonov-Bohm phase picked by electrons that orbit the defect. By studying the effective action, we argue that the phase diagram contains a non-magnetic transition between a large and a small Fermi surface.

Emergent Charge Fluctuations at the Kondo Breakdown of Heavy Fermions

One of the challenges in strongly correlated electron systems, is to understand the anomalous electronic behavior that develops at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP), a phenomenon that has been extensively studied in heavy fermion materials. Current theories have focused on the critical spin fluctuations and associated break-down of the Kondo effect. Here we argue that the abrupt change in Fermi surface volume that accompanies heavy fermion criticality leads to critical charge fluctuations. Using a model one dimensional Kondo lattice in which each moment is connected to a separate conduction bath, we show a Kondo breakdown transition develops between a heavy Fermi liquid and a gapped spin liquid via a QCP with ω/T scaling, which features a critical charge mode directly associated with the break-up of Kondo singlets. We discuss the possible implications of this emergent charge mode for experiment.

Order Fractionalization

The confluence of quantum mechanics and complexity, which leads to the emergence of rich, exotic states of matter, motivates the extension of our concepts of quantum ordering. The twin concepts of spontaneously broken symmetry, described in terms of a Landau order parameter, and of off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), are fundamental to our understanding of phases of matter. In electronic matter it has long been assumed that Landau order parameters involve an even number of electron fields, with integer spin and even charge, that are bosons. On the other hand, in low-dimensional magnetism, operators are known to fractionalize so that the excitations carry spin-1/2. Motivated by experiment, mean-field theory and computational results, we extend the concept of ODLRO into the time domain, proposing that in a broken symmetry state, quantum operators can fractionalize into half-integer order parameters. Using numerical renormalization group studies we show how such fractionalized order can be induced in quantum impurity models. We then conjecture that such order develops spontaneously in lattice quantum systems, due to positive feedback, leading to a new family of phases, manifested by a coincidence of broken symmetry and fractionalized excitations that can be detected by experiment.

Even-Odd effect of an Spin-S impurity coupled to a quantum critical system

We discuss an even-odd effect for an impurity with an $N$-fold degenerate internal states immersed in a two-dimensional superfluid--Mott-insulator quantum critical bath, which is described by an spin-$S$ XY Bose-Kondo impurity model with $N=2S+1$. Using a dimensional- and momentum-cut off regularized renormalization group and unbiased large-scale Monte Carlo numerical simulations, we establish the phase diagram for the $S=1$ impurity with all the relevant terms included. We show that the $S=1$ impurity with 3-fold degeneracy is fully screened by the critical bath, in qualitative contrast to the spin-1/2 case where the impurity is only partially screened. We then argue that all impurities with odd 2$S$ share the same universal physics as the spin-1/2 case, and all impurities with even 2$S$ are as the spin-1 case. We validate our conjecture with unbiased Monte Carlo simulations up to $S=2$. A physical consequence of this even-odd effect is that two $N=2$ degenerate impurities in the critical bath form a bound state at a sufficiently low temperature, which can be realized using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

Renormalized dispersing multiplets in the spectrum of nearly Mott localized systems

The spectrum of the strongly correlated systems usually shows resonant peaks at finite energy, with examples in the 115 Ce family which are reproduced by the dynamical mean-field theory. A similar structure has been seen recently in the orbitally selective Mott (OSM) phase of two-band model, known as doublon-holon bound state, with implications on the fate of such phase in the zero Hund's coupling limit. We show that these features can be captured with the slave-particle methods once their Hilbert space is taken into account. We use slave-spin calculations, justifiable in the limit of large dimensions, to explicitly demonstrate this and compare the results with dynamical mean-field theory.

Model for Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point in a 1D Kondo Lattice

Motivated by recent experiments, we study a quasi-one dimensional model of a Kondo lattice with Ferromagnetic coupling between the spins. Using bosonization and dynamical large-N techniques we establish the presence of a Fermi liquid and a magnetic phase separated by a local quantum critical point, governed by the Kondo breakdown picture. Thermodynamic properties are studied and a gapless charged mode at the quantum critical point is highlighted.

Analytical slave-spin mean-field approach to orbital selective Mott insulators

We use the slave-spin mean-field approach to study particle-hole symmetric one- and two-band Hubbard models in presence of Hund's coupling interaction. By analytical analysis of Hamiltonian, we show that the locking of the two orbitals vs.\,orbital-selective Mott transition can be formulated within a Landau-Ginzburg framework. By applying the slave-spin mean-field to impurity problem, we are able to make a correspondence between impurity and lattice. We also consider the stability of the orbital selective Mott phase to the hybridization between the orbitals and study the limitations of the slave-spin method for treating inter-orbital tunnellings in the case of multi-orbital Bethe lattices with particle-hole symmetry.

Conductance of closed and open long Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo rings

We calculate the finite temperature linear DC conductance of a generic single-impurity Anderson model containing an arbitrary number of Fermi liquid leads, and apply the formalism to closed and open long Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo (ABK) rings. We show that, as with the short ABK ring, there is a contribution to the conductance from the connected 4-point Green's function of the conduction electrons. At sufficiently low temperatures this contribution can be eliminated, and the conductance can be expressed as a linear function of the T-matrix of the screening channel. For closed rings we show that at temperatures high compared to the Kondo temperature, the conductance behaves differently for temperatures above and below $v_F/L$ where $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity and $L$ is the circumference of the ring. For open rings, when the ring arms have both a small transmission and a small reflection, we show from the microscopic model that the ring behaves like a two-path interferometer, and that the Kondo temperature is unaffected by details of the ring. Our findings confirm that ABK rings are potentially useful in the detection of the size of the Kondo screening cloud, the $π/2$ scattering phase shift from the Kondo singlet, and the suppression of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations due to inelastic scattering.

Luttinger liquid in contact with a Kramers pair of Majorana bound states

We discuss the signatures of a Kramers pair of Majorana modes formed in a Josephson junction on top of a quantum spin Hall system. We show that, while ignoring interactions on the quantum spin Hall edge allows arbitrary Andreev process in the system, moderate repulsive interactions stabilize Andreev transmission - the hole goes into the opposite lead from where the electron has arrived. We analyze the renormalization group equations and deduce the existence of a non-trivial critical point for sufficiently strong interactions.

Majorana approach to the stochastic theory of lineshapes

Motivated by recent Mossbauer experiments on strongly correlated mixed-valence systems, we revisit the Kubo-Anderson stochastic theory of spectral lineshapes. Using a Majorana representation for the nuclear spin we demonstrate how to recast the classic lineshape theory in a field-theoretic and diagrammatic language. We show that the leading contribution to the self-energy can reproduce most of the observed lineshape features including splitting and lineshape narrowing, while the vertex and the self-consistency corrections can be systematically included in the calculation. This new approach permits us to predict the line-shape produced by an arbitrary bulk charge fluctuation spectrum providing a model-independent way to extract the local charge fluctuation spectrum of the surrounding medium. We also derive an inverse formula to extract the charge fluctuation from the measured lineshape.

Orbital Kondo effect in fractional quantum Hall systems

We study transport properties of a charge qubit coupling two chiral Luttinger liquids, realized by two antidots placed between the edges of an integer $ν=1$ or fractional $ν=1/3$ quantum Hall bar. We show that in the limit of a large capacitive coupling between the antidots, their quasiparticle occupancy behaves as a pseudo-spin corresponding to an orbital Kondo impurity coupled to a chiral Luttinger liquid, while the inter antidot tunnelling acts as an impurity magnetic field. The latter tends to destabilize the Kondo fixed point for the $ν=1/3$ fractional Hall state, producing an effective inter-edge tunnelling. We relate the inter-edge conductance to the susceptibility of the Kondo impurity and calculate it analytically in various limits for both $ν=1$ and $ν=1/3$.

Effect of Disorder on the Conductance of (non-) Topological SN Junctions

General multi-channel SN junctions fall into two topological classes depending on whether or not there is a Majorana mode localized at the junction. This is known to lead to different behaviour of the conductance in the presence of arbitrary disorder near the junction. We discuss these topological properties from two perspectives, one based on representing the disorder by a scattering matrix in series with that of a clean SN junction and one based on low energy field theory methods. The first approach is used to discuss the effect of an Ohmic contact between a quantum wire and a three dimensional metal far from the junction. The second is useful for treating interactions.

Detecting a quantum critical point in topological SN junctions

A spin-orbit coupled quantum wire, with one end proximate to an s-wave superconductor, can become a topological superconductor, with a Majorana mode localized at each end of the superconducting region. It was recently shown that coupling one end of such a topological superconductor to $two$ normal channels of interacting electrons leads to a novel type of frustration and a quantum critical point when both channels couple with equal strength. We propose an experimental method to access this critical point in a $single$ quantum wire and show its resilience to disorder.

Interaction effects in Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo Rings

We study the conductance through an Aharonov-Bohm ring, containing a quantum dot in the Kondo regime in one arm, at finite temperature and arbitrary electronic density. We develop a general method for this calculation based on changing basis to the screening and non-screening channels. We show that an unusual term appears in the conductance, involving the connected 4-point Green's function of the conduction electrons. However, this term and terms quadratic in the ${\rm T}$-matrix can be eliminated at sufficiently low temperatures, leading to an expression for the conductance linear in the Kondo T-matrix. Explicit results are given for temperatures high compared to the Kondo temperature.

Aharonov-Bohm rings with strong spin-orbit interaction: the role of sample-specific properties

We present low-temperature transport experiments on Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings fabricated from two-dimensional hole gases in p-type GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Highly visible h/e (up to 15%) and h/2e oscillations, present for different gate voltages, prove the high quality of the fabricated devices. Like in previous work, a clear beating pattern of the h/e and h/2e oscillations is present in the magnetoresistance, producing split peaks in the Fourier spectrum. The magnetoresistance evolution is presented and discussed as a function of temperature and gate voltage. It is found that sample specific properties have a pronounced influence on the observed behavior. For example, the interference of different transverse modes or the interplay between h/e oscillations and conductance fluctuations can produce the features mentioned above. In previous work they have occasionally been interpreted as signatures of spin-orbit interaction (SOI)-induced effects. In the light of these results, the unambiguous identification of SOI-induced phase effects in AB rings remains still an open and challenging experimental task.
