Noncoplanar orders and quantum disordered states in maple-leaf (anti)ferromagnets

A promising route towards the realization of chiral spin liquids is the quantum melting of classically noncoplanar spin states via quantum fluctuations. In the classical realm, such noncoplanar orders can effectively be stabilized by interactions beyond nearest neighbors. Motivated by the recent synthesis of materials with a maple-leaf lattice geometry, we study the effect of cross-plaquette couplings on elementary Heisenberg antiferromagnets for this geometry (as well as their ferromagnetic counterparts). We find a rich spectrum of noncoplanar states, including a novel icosahedral order as well as incommensurate spin spirals, using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations in combination with a semi-analytical analysis. To inspect the potential quantum melting of these states, we analyze the quantum $S = 1/2$ variant of these models using pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) simulations. Notably, we indeed find extended parameter regimes lacking long-range magnetic order -- in regions classically occupied by noncoplanar orders -- which we putatively identify with the possible formation of chiral quantum spin liquids.

Competing Gauge Fields and Entropically-Driven Spin Liquid to Spin Liquid Transition in non-Kramers Pyrochlores

Gauge theories are powerful tools in theoretical physics, allowing complex phenomena to be reduced to simple principles, and are used in both high-energy and condensed matter physics. In the latter context, gauge theories are becoming increasingly popular for capturing the intricate spin correlations in spin liquids, exotic states of matter in which the dynamics of quantum spins never ceases, even at absolute zero temperature. We consider a spin system on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice where emergent gauge fields not only describe the spin liquid behaviour at zero temperature but crucially determine the system's temperature evolution, with distinct gauge fields giving rise to different spin liquid phases in separate temperature regimes. Focusing first on classical spins, in an intermediate temperature regime, the system shows an unusual coexistence of emergent vector and matrix gauge fields where the former is known from classical spin ice systems while the latter has been associated with fractonic quasiparticles, a peculiar type of excitation with restricted mobility. Upon cooling, the system transitions into a low-temperature phase where an entropic selection mechanism depopulates the degrees of freedom associated with the matrix gauge field, rendering the system spin ice like. We further provide numerical evidence that in the corresponding quantum model, a spin liquid with coexisting vector and matrix gauge fields has a finite window of stability in the parameter space of spin interactions down to zero temperature. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our findings for non-Kramers pyrochlore materials.

Polaronic correlations from optimized ancilla wave functions for the Fermi-Hubbard model

We employ a family of ancilla qubit variational wave-functions [Zhang and Sachdev, Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 023172 (2020)] to describe the polaronic correlations in the pseudo-gap metal phase of a hole-doped 2D Fermi-Hubbard model. Comparison to ultra-cold atom quantum simulator data [Koepsel et al., Science 374, 82 (2021)] reveals both qualitative and quantitative agreement with the numerical analysis from half-filling up to 80\% hole-doping, capturing the crossover from the polaronic regime to the Fermi liquid observed around $40\%$ doping.

Pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group for spin models

For decades, frustrated quantum magnets have been a seed for scientific progress and innovation in condensed matter. As much as the numerical tools for low-dimensional quantum magnetism have thrived and improved in recent years due to breakthroughs inspired by quantum information and quantum computation, higher-dimensional quantum magnetism can be considered as the final frontier, where strong quantum entanglement, multiple ordering channels, and manifold ways of paramagnetism culminate. At the same time, efforts in crystal synthesis have induced a significant increase in the number of tangible frustrated magnets which are generically three-dimensional in nature, creating an urgent need for quantitative theoretical modeling. We review the pseudo-fermion (PF) and pseudo-Majorana (PM) functional renormalization group (FRG) and their specific ability to address higher-dimensional frustrated quantum magnetism. First developed more than a decade ago, the PFFRG interprets a Heisenberg model Hamiltonian in terms of Abrikosov pseudofermions, which is then treated in a diagrammatic resummation scheme formulated as a renormalization group flow of $m$-particle pseudofermion vertices. The article reviews the state of the art of PFFRG and PMFRG and discusses their application to exemplary domains of frustrated magnetism, but most importantly, it makes the algorithmic and implementation details of these methods accessible to everyone. By thus lowering the entry barrier to their application, we hope that this review will contribute towards establishing PFFRG and PMFRG as the numerical methods for addressing frustrated quantum magnetism in higher spatial dimensions.

Candidate quantum spin liquids on the maple-leaf lattice

Motivated by recent numerical studies reporting putative quantum paramagnetic behavior in spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg models on the maple-leaf lattice, we classify Abrikosov fermion mean-field Ansätze of fully symmetric $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquids within the framework of projective symmetry groups. We obtain a total of $17$ $U(1)$ and $12$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ algebraic PSGs, and, upon restricting their realization via mean-field Ansätze with nearest-neighbor amplitudes (relevant to the studied models), only 12 $U(1)$ and 8 $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ distinct phases are obtained. We present both singlet and triplet fields for all Ansätze up to third nearest-neighbor bonds and discuss their spinon dispersions as well as their dynamical spin structure factors. We further assess the effects of Gutzwiller projection on the equal-time spin structure factors, and identify a $U(1)$ Fermi surface spin liquid whose structure factor most closely reproduces the one obtained from pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group calculations.

A Classical Chiral Spin-Liquid from Chiral Interactions on the Pyrochlore Lattice

Classical spin-liquids are paramagnetic phases which feature nontrivial patterns of spin correlations within their ground-state manifold whose degeneracy scales with system size. Often they harbor fractionalized excitations, and their low-energy fluctuations are described by emergent gauge theories. In this work, we discuss a model composed of chiral three-body spin interactions on the pyrochlore lattice that realizes a novel classical chiral spin-liquid. Employing both analytical and numerical techniques, we show that the ground-state manifold of this spin-liquid is given by a subset of the so-called color-ice states. We demonstrate that the ground states are captured by an effective gauge theory which possesses a divergence-free condition and an additional chiral term that constrains the total flux of the fields through a single tetrahedron. The divergence-free condition results in two-fold pinch points in the spin structure factor and the identification of bionic charges as the elementary excitations of the system. We discuss how the mobility of these elementary charges is restricted by the additional chiral term, which in turn suggests that these charges are fractons.

Candidate quantum disordered intermediate phase in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice

Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices have long attracted interest for the formation of quantum disordered states and the possible emergence of quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground states. Here we turn to the nearest-neighbor spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple-leaf lattice, which is known to relieve frustration by the formation of canted $120^{\circ}$ magnetic order or valence bond crystal order when varying the bond anisotropy. Employing a pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group approach to assess its ground state phase diagram in detail, we present evidence for a QSL regime sandwiched between these two limiting phases. The formation of such a QSL might signal proximity to a possible deconfined quantum critical point from which it emerges, and that is potentially accessible by tuning the exchange couplings. Our conclusions are based on large-scale simulations involving a careful finite-size scaling analysis of the behavior of magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation functions under renormalization group flow.

$\require{mhchem}$Quantum paramagnetism in the decorated square-kagome antiferromagnet $\ce{Na6Cu7BiO4(PO4)4Cl3}$

$\require{mhchem}$The square-kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a highly frustrated Hamiltonian whose material realizations have been scarce. We theoretically investigate the recently synthesized $\ce{Na6Cu7BiO4(PO4)4Cl3}$ where a Cu$^{2+}$ spin-$1/2$ square-kagome lattice (with six site unit cell) is decorated by a seventh magnetic site alternatingly above and below the layers. The material does not show any sign of long-range magnetic order down to 50 mK despite a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-212$ K indicating a quantum paramagnetic phase. Our DFT energy mapping elicits a purely antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian that features longer range exchange interactions beyond the pure square-kagome model and, importantly, we find the seventh site to be strongly coupled to the plane. We combine two variational Monte Carlo approaches, pseudo-fermion/Majorana functional renormalization group and Schwinger-Boson mean field calculations to show that the complex Hamiltonian of $\ce{Na6Cu7BiO4(PO4)4Cl3}$ still features a nonmagnetic ground state. We explain how the seventh Cu$^{2+}$ site actually aids the stabilization of the disordered state. We predict static and dynamic spin structure factors to guide future neutron scattering experiments.

Non-Coplanar Magnetic Orders in Classical Square-Kagome Antiferromagnets

Motivated by the recent synthesis of a number of Mott insulating square-kagome materials, we explore the rich phenomenology of frustrated magnetism induced by this lattice geometry, also referred to as the squagome or shuriken lattice. On the classical level, square-kagome antiferromagnets are found to exhibit extensive degeneracies, order-by-disorder, and non-coplanar ordering tendencies, which we discuss for an elementary, classical Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor and cross-plaquette interactions. Having in mind that upon introducing quantum fluctuations non-coplanar order can melt into chiral quantum spin liquids, we provide detailed information on the multitude of non-coplanar orders, including some which break rotational symmetry (possibly leading to nematic quantum orders), as well as a number of (incommensurate) spin spiral phases. Using extensive numerical simulations, we also discuss the thermodynamic signatures of these phases, which often show multi-step thermal ordering. Our comprehensive discussion of the classical square-kagome Heisenberg model, often drawing comparisons to the conventional kagome antiferromagnet, sets the stage for future explorations of quantum analogs of the various phases, either conceptually such as in quantum spin-1/2 generalizations of our model or experimentally such as in the Cu-based candidate materials.

Piercing the Dirac spin liquid: From a single monopole to chiral states

The parton approach for quantum spin liquids gives a transparent description of low-energy elementary excitations, e.g., spinons and emergent gauge-field fluctuations. The latter ones are directly coupled to the hopping/pairing of spinons. By using the fermionic representation of the $U(1)$ Dirac state on the kagome lattice and variational Monte Carlo techniques to include the Gutzwiller projection, we analyse the effect of modifying the gauge fields in the spinon kinematics. In particular, we construct low-energy monopole excitations, which are shown to be gapless in the thermodynamic limit. States with a finite number of monopoles or with a finite density of them are also considered, with different patterns of the gauge fluxes. We show that these chiral states are not stabilized in the Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor super-exchange couplings, and the Dirac state corresponds to the lowest-energy Ansatz within this family of variational wave functions. Our results support the idea that spinons with a gapless conical spectrum coexist with gapless monopole excitations, even for the spin-1/2 case.

Quantum spin liquids on the diamond lattice

We perform a projective symmetry group classification of spin $S=1/2$ symmetric quantum spin liquids with different gauge groups on the diamond lattice. Employing the Abrikosov fermion representation, we obtain $8$ $SU(2)$, $62$ $U(1)$ and $80$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ algebraic PSGs. Constraining these solutions to mean-field parton Ansätze with short-range amplitudes, the classification reduces to only $2$ $SU(2)$, $7$ $U(1)$ and $8$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ distinctly realizable phases. We obtain both the singlet and triplet fields for all Ansätze, discuss the spinon dispersions, and present the dynamical spin structure factors within a self-consistent treatment of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with up to third-nearest neighbor couplings. Interestingly, we find that a zero-flux $SU(2)$ state and some descendent $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ states host robust gapless nodal loops in their dispersion spectrum, owing their stability at the mean-field level to the projective implementation of rotoinversion and screw symmetries. A nontrivial connection is drawn between one of our $U(1)$ spinon Hamiltonians (belonging to the nonprojective class) and the Fu-Kane-Mele model for a three-dimensional topological insulator on the diamond lattice. We show that Gutzwiller projection of the 0- and $π$-flux $SU(2)$ spin liquids generates long-range Néel order.

Classical and quantum phases of the pyrochlore $S=1/2$ magnet with Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

We investigate the ground state and critical temperature phase diagrams of the classical and quantum $S=1/2$ pyrochlore lattice with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). We consider ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange as well as direct and indirect DMI. Classically, three ground states are found: all-in/all-out, ferromagnetic and a locally ordered $XY$ phase, known as $Γ_5$, which displays an accidental classical U(1) degeneracy. Quantum zero-point energy fluctuations are found to lift the classical ground state degeneracy and select the $ψ_3$ state in most parts of the $Γ_5$ regime. Likewise, thermal fluctuations treated classically, select the $ψ_3$ state at $T=0^+$. In contrast, classical Monte Carlo finds that the system orders at $T_c$ in the $ψ_2$ state of $Γ_5$ for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange and indirect DMI with a transition from $ψ_2$ to $ψ_3$ at a temperature $T_{Γ_5} <T_c$. The same method finds that the system orders via a single transition at $T_c$ directly into the $ψ_3$ state for most of the region with ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange and indirect DMI. Such ordering behavior at $T_c$ for the $S=1/2$ quantum model is corroborated by high-temperature series expansion. To investigate the $T=0$ quantum ground states, we apply the pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG). The quantum paramagnetic phase of the pure antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model is found to persist over a finite region in the phase diagram for both direct or indirect DMI. We find that near the boundary of ferromagnetism and $Γ_5$ antiferromagnetism the system may potentially realize a quantum ground state lacking conventional magnetic order. Otherwise, for the largest portion of the phase diagram, PFFRG finds the same ordered phases as in the classical model.

Quantum effects on unconventional pinch point singularities

Fracton phases are a particularly exotic type of quantum spin liquids where the elementary quasiparticles are intrinsically immobile. These phases may be described by unconventional gauge theories known as tensor or multipolar gauge theories, characteristic for so-called type-I or type-II fracton phases, respectively. Both variants have been associated with distinctive singular patterns in the spin structure factor, such as multifold pinch points for type-I and quadratic pinch points for type-II fracton phases. Here, we assess the impact of quantum fluctuations on these patterns by numerically investigating the spin $S=1/2$ quantum version of a classical spin model on the octahedral lattice featuring exact realizations of multifold and quadratic pinch points, as well as an unusual pinch line singularity. Based on large scale pseudo fermion and pseudo Majorana functional renormalization group calculations, we take the intactness of these spectroscopic signatures as a measure for the stability of the corresponding fracton phases. We find that in all three cases, quantum fluctuations significantly modify the shape of pinch points or lines by smearing them out and shifting signal away from the singularities in contrast to effects of pure thermal fluctuations. This indicates possible fragility of these phases and allows us to identify characteristic fingerprints of their remnants.

Projective symmetry group classification of Abrikosov fermion mean-field ansätze on the square-octagon lattice

We perform a projective symmetry group (PSG) classification of symmetric quantum spin liquids with different gauge groups on the square-octagon lattice. Employing the Abrikosov fermion representation for spin-$1/2$, we obtain $32$ $SU(2)$, $1808$ $U(1)$ and $384$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ algebraic PSGs. Constraining ourselves to mean-field parton ansätze with short-range amplitudes, the classification reduces to a limited number, with 4 $SU(2)$, 24 $U(1)$ and 36 $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$, distinct phases. We discuss their ground state properties and spinon dispersions within a self-consistent treatment of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with frustrating couplings.

Nature of unconventional pairing in the kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recent discovery of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K,Rb,Cs) has uncovered an intriguing arena for exotic Fermi surface instabilities in a kagome metal. Among them, superconductivity is found in the vicinity of multiple van Hove singularities, exhibiting indications of unconventional pairing. We show that the sublattice interference mechanism is central to understanding the formation of superconductivity in a kagome metal. Starting from an appropriately chosen minimal tight-binding model with multiple with multiple van Hove singularities close to the Fermi level for AV$_3$Sb$_5$, we provide a random phase approximation analysis of superconducting instabilities. Non-local Coulomb repulsion, the sublattice profile of the van Hove bands, and the bare interaction strength turn out to be the crucial parameters to determine the preferred pairing symmetry. Implications for potentially topological surface states are discussed, along with a proposal for additional measurements to pin down the nature of superconductivity in AV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Static and dynamical signatures of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and YCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$, we consider the ${S=1/2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor super-exchange $J$ and (out-of-plane) Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction $J_D$, which favors (in-plane) ${\bf Q}=(0,0)$ magnetic order. By using both variational Monte Carlo (based upon Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions) and tensor-network approaches (built from infinite projected-entangled pair/simplex states), we show that the ground state develops a finite magnetization for $J_D/J \gtrsim 0.03 - 0.04$, while the gapless spin liquid remains stable for smaller values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The relatively small value of $J_D/J$ for which magnetic order sets in is particularly relevant for the interpretation of low-temperature behaviors of kagome antiferromagnets, including ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$. In addition, we assess the spin dynamical structure factors and the corresponding low-energy spectrum, by using the variational Monte Carlo technique. The existence of a continuum of excitations above the magnon modes is reported within the magnetically ordered phase, similarly to what has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering on Cs$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$SnF$_{12}$.

Effective spin-1 breathing kagome Hamiltonian induced by the exchange hierarchy in the maple leaf mineral bluebellite

As a highly frustrated model Hamiltonian with an exact dimer ground state, the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the maple leaf lattice is of high theoretical interest, and a material realization is intensely sought after. We determine the magnetic Hamiltonian of the copper mineral bluebellite using density functional theory based energy mapping. As a consequence of the significant distortion of the spin $S=1/2$ maple leaf lattice, we find two of the five distinct nearest neighbor couplings to be ferromagnetic. Solution of this Hamiltonian with density matrix renormalization group calculations points us to the surprising insight that this particular imperfect maple leaf lattice, due to the strongly ferromagnetic Cu$^{2+}$ dimer, realizes an effective $S=1$ breathing kagome Hamiltonian. In fact, this is another highly interesting Hamiltonian which has rarely been realized in materials. Analysis of the effective model within a bond-operator formalism allows us to identify a valence bond solid ground state and to extract thermodynamic quantities using a low-energy bosonic mean-field theory. We resolve the puzzle of the apparent one-dimensional character of bluebellite as our calculated specific heat has a Bonner-Fisher-like shape, in good agreement with experiment.

Tensor network study of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet on the Shuriken lattice

We investigate the ground state of the spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet on the Shuriken lattice, also in the presence of an external magnetic field. To this end, we employ two-dimensional tensor network techniques based on infinite projected entangled pair and simplex states considering states with different sizes of the unit cells. We show that a valence bond crystal with resonances over length six loops emerges as the ground state (at any given finite bond dimension) yielding the lowest reported estimate of the ground state energy $E_0/J = -0.4410 \pm 0.0001$ for this model, estimated in the thermodynamic limit. We also study the model in the presence of an external magnetic field and find the emergence of $0$, $1/3$ and $2/3$ magnetization plateaus with states respecting translation and point group symmetries that feature loop-four plaquette resonances instead.
