Designing electronic magnetoelectric matter with organic quantum spin trimers

Magnetoelectric (ME) phenomena are commonly driven by spin-lattice coupling. Here we demonstrate a different route based on frustrated quantum spin trimers that intrinsically intertwine magnetic moments and electric dipoles. Using molecular design principles, we realize a weakly coupled lattice of equilateral $S=1/2$ spin trimers in the organic radical crystal TNN$\cdot$CH$_3$CN. In this material, correlated electronic fluctuations within each trimer generate electric dipoles, while geometrically frustrated intertrimer interactions organize them into collective ME states. Magnetization, thermodynamic, and dielectric measurements reveal multiple magnetic-field-induced phases, including the $1/3$-magnetization plateau marked by pronounced dielectric anomalies. Effective low-energy theories and numerical simulations show that these phenomena are driven by electronically generated trimer dipoles whose collective order is stabilized by frustration relief of the intertrimer interactions, establishing a direct connection between geometric frustration and emergent magnetoelectricity. Our results identify quantum spin trimers as multifunctional building blocks, providing a bottom-up route for designing correlated ME materials from electronically active quantum spin clusters.

Finite field regime for a quantum spin liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

An external magnetic field can induce a transition in $α$-RuCl$_3$ from an ordered zigzag state to a disordered state that is possibly related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Here we present new field dependent inelastic neutron scattering and magnetocaloric effect measurements implying the existence of an additional transition out of the quantum spin liquid phase at an upper field limit $B_u$. The neutron scattering shows three distinct regimes of magnetic response. In the low field ordered state the response shows magnon peaks; the intermediate field regime shows only continuum scattering, and above $B_u$ the response shows sharp magnon peaks at the lower bound of a strong continuum. Measurable dispersion of magnon modes along the $(0,0,L)$ direction implies non-negligible inter-plane interactions. Combining the magnetocaloric effect measurements with other data a $T-B$ phase diagram is constructed. The results constrain the range where one might expect to observe quantum spin liquid behavior in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ in High Magnetic Fields

We report measurements of the specific heat and magnetization of single crystal samples of the spin-1/2 kagome compound ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ (herbertsmithite), a promising quantum spin-liquid candidate, in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures. The magnetization was measured up to $μ_{0}H$ = 55 T at $T$ = 0.4 K, showing a saturation of the weakly interacting impurity moments in fields above $\sim10$ T. The specific heat was measured down to $T < 0.4$ K in magnetic fields up to 18 T, revealing $T$-linear and $T$-squared contributions. The $T$-linear contribution is surprisingly large and indicates the presence of gapless excitations in large applied fields. These results further highlight the unusual excitation spectrum of the spin liquid ground state of herbertsmithite.
