Bulk-cone singularities and echoes from AdS exotic compact objects

The region near a black hole horizon may be modified by quantum gravity effects that resolve the singularity. Such geometry may be represented by an exotic compact object. Because the horizon is enclosed by a photon sphere, it is difficult to probe this region directly. In this paper, we develop a method to study the region inside the photon sphere by applying the AdS/CFT correspondence. We extract signatures of the modified geometry from the retarded Green functions of the dual conformal field theory. The retarded Green functions can be computed from bulk wave functions of scalar field. We show that exotic compact objects leave two characteristic imprints: bulk-cone singularities and echoes. The bulk-cone singularities correspond to null geodesics in the bulk, allowing us to detect null trajectories that are specific to exotic compact objects. The echoes arise from wave modes trapped inside the photon sphere, and thus signal the absence of a horizon. As concrete examples, we study AdS gravastar and AdS wormhole. We compute the corresponding bulk wave functions both via the WKB approximation and through numerical analysis and observe the bulk-cone singularities and echoes explicitly.

AdS gravastar and its signatures from dual conformal field theory

Quantum gravity effects are expected to resolve the black hole singularity and the effects may deform the region near but outside the horizon. Applying AdS/CFT correspondence, we see their signatures from the viewpoint of dual conformal field theory. As a regularized geometry, we consider AdS gravastar constructed by gluing AdS-Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetime. The retarded Green functions of dual conformal field theory have bulk-cone singularities associated with null trajectories in the bulk and we obtain the singularities specific to a horizon-less geometry. We also observe echoes coming from waves reflected behind the photon sphere. The existence of echoes implies the modification of geometry inside the photon sphere.

Holographic Interfaces in Symmetric Product Orbifolds

The study of non-local operators in gauge theory and holography, such as line-operators or interfaces, has attracted significant attention. Two-dimensional symmetric product orbifolds are close cousins of higher-dimensional gauge theory. In this work, we construct a novel family of interfaces in symmetric product orbifolds. These may be regarded as two-dimensional analogues of Wilson-line operators or Karch-Randall interfaces at the same time. The construction of the interfaces entails the choice of boundary conditions of the seed theory. For a generic seed theory, we construct the boundary states associated to the interfaces via the folding trick, compute their overlaps and extract the spectrum of interface changing operators through modular transformation. Then, we specialise to the supersymmetric four-torus $\mathbb{T}^4$ and show that the corresponding interfaces of the symmetric product orbifold are dual to $AdS_2$ branes in the tensionless limit of type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$.

AdS gravastar and bulk-cone singularities

The horizon of black hole is surrounded by the photon sphere and an outside observer cannot easily examine the geometry inside the photon sphere. In this note, we propose a way to investigate the region from dual conformal field theory by making use of AdS/CFT correspondence. We first construct gravastar geometry as an asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime, where the region inside the photon sphere is replaced by a horizon-less geometry. It is known that bulk-cone singularities in the retarded Green function in dual conformal field theory can encode the bulk null geodesics. We then compute numerically the retarded Green function from the bulk theory and observe bulk-cone singularities corresponding to null geodesics traveling into the interior region. In this way, we show that it is possible to examine the region inside the photon sphere from bulk-cone singularities of dual conformal field theory.

The semi-classical saddles in three-dimensional gravity via holography and mini-superspace approach

We determine the complex geometries dual to the semi-classical saddles in three-dimensional gravity with positive or negative cosmological constant. We examine the semi-classical saddles in Liouville field theory and interpret them in terms of gravity theory. For this, we describe the gravity theory by Chern Simons theory and classify the possible saddles based on homotopy group argument. We further realize the semi-classical saddles using the mini-superspace model of quantum gravity and explicitly determine the integral contour. In the case of positive cosmological constant, we recovered the geometry used for no-boundary proposal of Hartle and Hawking. In the case of negative cosmological constant, the geometry can be identified with Euclidean anti-de Sitter space attached with imaginary radius spheres. The geometry should be unphysical and several arguments on this issue are provided. Partial results were already presented in our earlier letter, and more detailed derivations and explanations on the results are given along with additional results. In particular, we reproduce the classical Liouville action from the Chern-Simons formulation of dual gravity theory.

Semi-classical saddles of three-dimensional gravity via holography

We find out the complex geometries corresponding to the semi-classical saddles of threedimensional quantum gravity by making use of the known results of dual conformal field theory (CFT), which is effectively given by Liouville field theory. We examine both the cases with positive and negative cosmological constants. We determine the set of semi-classical saddles to choose from the homotopy argument in the Chern-Simons formulation combined with CFT results and provide strong supports from the mini-superspace approach to the quantum gravity. For the case of positive cosmological constant, partial results were already obtained in our previous works, and they are consistent with the current ones. For the case of negative cosmological constant, we identify the geometry corresponding a semi-classical saddle with three-dimensional Euclidean anti-de Sitter space dressed with imaginary radius three-dimensional spheres. The geometry is generically unphysical, but we argue that the fact itself does not lead to any problems.

Engineering Perturbative String Duals for Symmetric Product Orbifold CFTs

Constructing a holographic string theory dual for a CFT in the perturbative, weakly coupled regime is a holy grail for gauge/string dualities that would not only open the door for proofs of the AdS/CFT correspondence but could also provide novel examples of string duals with and without supersymmetry. In this work we consider some marginal perturbation of a family of symmetric product orbifolds in two dimensions. From their correlation functions we engineer a bosonic string theory whose amplitudes are shown to reproduce the CFT correlation function order-by-order both in the coupling and in $1/N$. Our derivation does not require to compute and compare correlation functions explicitly but rather relies on a sequence of identities that can be derived using path integral methods. The bosonic string theory we engineer is based on the field content of the Kac-Wakimoto representation of strings in $AdS_3$ with $k$ units of pure NSNS flux, but the interaction terms we obtain are different. They include current algebra preserving interaction terms with one unit of spectral flow.

Complex saddles of Chern-Simons gravity and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We examine the black hole solutions of dS$_3$ gravity by applying the explicit dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. The gravity theory is described by Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$, and the complexified theory is known to have too many saddle points. We determine the set of "allowable geometry" from dual CFT correlators. Concretely, we classify the possible complex solutions corresponding to dS$_3$ black holes from Liouville two-point functions. We extend the analysis to Liouville multi-point functions and among others we study geometry corresponding to two linked Wilson loops on $S^3$ by the monodromy matrix of Liouville four-point function. Some parts of the results were presented in a previous letter but here they are explained in more details and extended in various ways. In particular, we generalize the results to the case with higher-spin gravity by focusing the effects of higher-spin charges.

Complex saddles of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity via holography

We determine complex saddles of three-dimensional gravity with a positive cosmological constant by applying the recently proposed holography. It is sometimes useful to consider a complexified metric to study quantum gravity as in the case of the no-boundary proposal by Hartle and Hawking. However, there would be too many saddles for complexified gravity, and we should determine which saddles to take. We describe the gravity theory by three-dimensional SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory. At the leading order in the Newton constant, its holographic dual is given by Liouville theory with a large imaginary central charge. We examine geometry with a conical defect, called a de Sitter black hole, from a Liouville two-point function. We also consider geometry with two conical defects, whose saddles are determined by the monodromy matrix of Liouville four-point function. Utilizing Chern-Simons description, we extend the similar analysis to the case with higher-spin gravity.

Late-time correlation functions in dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We compute the late-time correlation functions on three-dimensional de Sitter spacetime for a higher-spin gravity theory. For this, we elaborate on the formulation to obtain the wave functional of universe from a dual conformal field theory, which is used to compute the late-time correlation functions. We argue that the relation to direct bulk Feynman diagram computations in the in-in formulation. We furthermore provide a precise prescription to construct a higher-spin dS$_3$ holography as an analytic continuation of Gaberdiel-Gopakumar duality for AdS$_3$. Part of results here were already reported in an earlier letter. We explain the details of their derivations and extend the analysis to more generic cases in this paper. Previously, we have examined two- and three-point functions and a simple four-point correlator at the leading order in Newton constant. Here we also evaluate more complicated four-point correlators. Finally, we study late-time correlators in an alternative limit of dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ with critical level coset, such as, two-point correlator on conical defect geometry. We also examine one-loop corrections to two-point correlator on dS$_3$.

Three-dimensional de Sitter holography and bulk correlators at late time

We propose an explicitly calculable example of holography on 3-dimensional de Sitter space by providing a prescription to analytic continue a higher-spin holography on 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Applying the de Sitter holography, we explicitly compute bulk correlation functions on 3-dimensional de Sitter space at late time in a higher-spin gravity. These expressions are consistent with recent analysis based on bulk Feynman diagrams. Our explicit computations reveal how holographic computations could provide fruitful information.

CFT duals of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity

We present a class of dS/CFT correspondence between two-dimensional CFTs and three-dimensional de Sitter spaces. We argue that such a CFT includes an SU$(2)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -2$, which corresponds to the classical gravity limit. We can generalize this dS/CFT by considering the SU$(N)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -N$, dual to the higher-spin gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We confirm that under this proposed duality the classical partition function in the gravity side can be reproduced from CFT calculations. We also point out a duality relation known in higher-spin holography provides further evidence. Moreover, we analyze two-point functions and entanglement entropy in our dS/CFT correspondence. Possible spectrum and quantum corrections in the gravity theory are discussed.

FZZ-triality and large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory

We examine dualities of two dimensional conformal field theories by applying the methods developed in previous works. We first derive the duality between $SL(2|1)_k/(SL(2)_k \otimes U(1))$ coset and Witten's cigar model or sine-Liouville theory. The latter two models are Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)dual to each other, hence the relation of the three models is named FZZ-triality. These results are used to study correlator correspondences between large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory and a coset of the form $Y(k_1,k_2)/SL(2)_{k_1 +k_2}$, where $Y(k_1 , k_2)$ consists of two $SL(2|1)_{k_i}$ and free bosons or equivalently two $U(1)$ cosets of $D(2,1;k_i -1)$ at level one. These correspondences are a main result of this paper. The FZZ-triality acts as a seed of the correspondence, which in particular implies a hidden $SL(2)_{k'}$ in $SL(2|1)_k$ or $D(2,1 ; k-1)_1$. The relation of levels is $k' -1 = 1/(k-1)$. We also construct boundary actions in sine-Liouville theory as another use of the FZZ-triality. Furthermore, we generalize the FZZ-triality to the case with $SL(n|1)_k/(SL(n)_k \otimes U(1))$ for arbitrary $n>2$.

Correlator correspondences for Gaiotto-Rapčák dualities and first order formulation of coset models

We derive correspondences of correlation functions among dual conformal field theories in two dimensions by developing a "first order formulation" of coset models. We examine several examples, and the most fundamental one may be a conjectural equivalence between a coset $(SL(n)_k \otimes SL(n)_{-1})/SL(n)_{k-1}$ and $\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ Toda field theory with generic level $k$. Among others, we also complete the derivation of higher rank FZZ-duality involving a coset $SL(n+1)_k /(SL(n)_{k} \otimes U(1))$, which could be done only for $n=2,3$ in our previous paper. One obstacle in the previous work was our poor understanding of a first order formulation of coset models. In this paper, we establish such a formulation using the BRST formalism. With our better understanding, we successfully derive correlator correspondences of dual models including the examples mentioned above. The dualities may be regarded as conformal field theory realizations of some of the Gaiotto-Rapčák dualities of corner vertex operator algebras.

Holography in de Sitter Space via Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of known holography for coset CFTs. We also present a higher spin gravity extension of our duality.

Correlator correspondences for subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras and principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras

We examine a strong/weak duality between a Heisenberg coset of a theory with $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebra symmetry and a theory with a $\mathfrak{sl}_{n|1}$-structure. In a previous work, two of the current authors provided a path integral derivation of correlator correspondences for a series of generalized Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)duality. In this paper, we derive correlator correspondences in a similar way but for a different series of generalized duality. This work is a part of the project to realize the duality of corner vertex operator algebras proposed by Gaiotto and Rapčák and partly proven by Linshaw and one of us in terms of two dimensional conformal field theory. We also examine another type of duality involving an additional pair of fermions, which is a natural generalization of the fermionic FZZ-duality. The generalization should be important since a principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebra appears as its symmetry and the properties of the superalgebra are less understood than bosonic counterparts.

Higher rank FZZ-dualities

We propose new strong/weak dualities in two dimensional conformal field theories by generalizing the Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)duality between Witten's cigar model described by the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)/\mathfrak{u}(1)$ coset and sine-Liouville theory. In a previous work, a proof of the FZZ-duality was provided by applying the reduction method from $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model to Liouville field theory and the self-duality of Liouville field theory. In this paper, we work with the coset model of the type $\mathfrak{sl}(N+1)/(\mathfrak{sl}(N) \times \mathfrak{u}(1))$ and propose that the model is dual to a theory with an $\mathfrak{sl}(N+1|N)$ structure. We derive the duality explicitly for $N=2,3$ by applying recent works on the reduction method extended for $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ and the self-duality of Toda field theory. Our results can be regarded as a conformal field theoretic derivation of the duality of the Gaiotto-Rapčák corner vertex operator algebras $Y_{0, N, N+1}[ψ]$ and $Y_{N, 0, N+1}[ψ^{-1}]$.

Correspondences among CFTs with different W-algebra symmetry

W-algebras are constructed via quantum Hamiltonian reduction associated with a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and an $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-embedding into $\mathfrak{g}$. We derive correspondences among correlation functions of theories having different W-algebras as symmetry algebras. These W-algebras are associated to the same $\mathfrak{g}$ but distinct $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-embeddings. For this purpose, we first explore different free field realizations of W-algebras and then generalize previous works on the path integral derivation of correspondences of correlation functions. For $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(3)$, there is only one non-standard (non-regular) W-algebra known as the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra. We examine its free field realizations and derive correlator correspondences involving the WZNW theory of $\mathfrak{sl}(3)$, the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra and the principal $W_3$-algebra. There are three non-regular W-algebras associated to $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(4)$. We show that the methods developed for $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(3)$ can be applied straightforwardly. We briefly comment on extensions of our techniques to general $\mathfrak{g}$.
