$μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to 3e$ processes with polarized muons and supersymmetric grand unified theories

$μ^{+} \to e^{+} γ$ and $μ^{+} \to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ processes are analyzed in detail with polarized muons in supersymmetric grand unified theories. We first present Dalitz plot distribution for $μ^{+} \to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ decay based on effective Lagrangian with general lepton-flavor-violating couplings and define various P- and T-odd asymmetries. We calculate branching ratios and asymmetries in supersymmetric SU(5) and SO(10) models taking into account complex soft supersymmetry breaking terms. Imposing constraints from experimental bounds on the electron, neutron and atomic electric dipole moments, we find that the T-odd asymmetry for $μ^{+} \to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ can be 15% in the SU(5) case. P-odd asymmetry with respect to muon polarization for $μ^{+} \to e^{+} γ$ varies from -20% to -100% for the SO(10) model while it is $+100%$ in the SU(5) case. We also show that the P-odd asymmetries in $μ^{+} \to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ and the ratio of $μ^{+} \to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+} \to e^{+} γ$ branching fractions are useful to distinguish different models.

Effect of supersymmetric CP phases on the $B \to X_s γ$ and $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ decays in the minimal supergravity model

We investigate the effect of supersymmetric CP violating phases on the $B\to X_s γ$ and $B\to X_s l^+l^-$ decays in the minimal supergravity model. We show that the phase of the trilinear scalar coupling constant for top squarks is strongly suppressed and aligned to that of the gaugino mass due to a renormalization effect from the Planck scale to the electroweak scale. As a result, the effect of supersymmetric CP violating phases on the $B \to X_s γ$ and $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ decays are small taking into account the neutron and the electron electric dipole moment constraints. For the $B \to X_sγ$ decay, the amplitude has almost no new CP violating phase and the direct CP asymmetry is less than 2 %. For the $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ decay, the branching ratio can be sizably different from that in the standard model only when the sign of the $B \to X_s γ$ amplitude is opposite to that in the standard model.

Flavor Physics in the Supergravity Model

Phenomenological aspects of flavor changing processes are considered in the context of the supergravity model.Various flavor changing neutral current processes in B and K decays are calculated in such models. For lepton flavor violating processes the $μ^+ \to e γ$ branching ratio and the T odd triple vector correlation for the $μ^+ \to e^+ e^+ e^-$ process are investigated in the SU(5) SUSY GUT. Possibility to find SUSY effects through these Flavor changing processes in future experiments are also discussed.

Flavor changing neutral current processes in $B$ and $K$ decays in the supergravity model

Flavor changing neutral current processes such as $b \to s γ$, $b \to s l^+ l^-$, $b \to s ν\barν$, $ε_K$, $Δm_B$, $K^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ and $\K_L \to π^0 ν\barν$ are calculated in the supersymmetric standard model based on supergravity. We consider two assumptions for the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. In the minimal case soft breaking terms for all scalar fields are taken to be universal at the GUT scale whereas those terms are different for the squark/slepton sector and the Higgs sector in the nonminimal case. In the calculation we have taken into account the next-to-leading order QCD correction to the $b \to s γ$ branching ratio, the results from the LEP II superparticles search, and the condition of the radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that $Δm_B$ and $ε_K$ can be enhanced up to 40% compared to the Standard Model values in the nonminimal case. In the same parameter region the $b \to s ν\barν$, $K^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ and $\K_L \to π^0 ν\barν$ branching ratios are reduced up to 10%. The corresponding deviation in the minimal case is 20% for $Δm_B$ and $ε_K$ and within 3% for the $b \to s ν\barν$, $K^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ and $\K_L \to π^0 ν\barν$. For the $b \to s l^+ l^-$ process the significant deviation from the Standard Model is realized only when the $b \to s γ$ amplitude has an opposite sign to the Standard Model prediction. Significance on these results from possible future improvements of the $b \to s γ$ branching ratio measurement and top squark search is discussed.

CP violation in the $μ\to 3e$ process and supersymmetric grand unified theory

A triple vector correlation in the $μ^{+} \to e^{+} e^{+} e^{-}$ decay with polarized muons is investigated as a probe to CP violating coupling constants in supersymmetric models. A sizable triple correlation can be induced due to a complex phase in the supersymmetric soft-breaking terms in the SU(5) grand unified theory. Correlation with the electric dipole moments of electron and neutron are investigated and it is shown that these quantities give independent information on possible CP violating sources.

Enhancement of μ\to e γin the supersymmetric SU(5) GUT at large \tanβ

Branching ratio of $μ\to \e γ$ is evaluated in the supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory taking account of higher dimensional operators, which reproduce the realistic quark and lepton masses and the mixing parameters. It is shown by numerical calculation that at large $\tanβ$ the branching ratio is enhanced by a few orders of magnitude since the flavor mixings for both the left- and the right-handed sleptons are induced by the effect of the higher dimensional operators.

Kaon and Muon Decay Phenomenology

Theoretical aspects of kaon and muon decays are reviewed. In particular, three topics on kaon and muon decays, namely $K \to πν\barν$ processes, T violation in $K^+ \to π^0μ^+ ν$ decay and lepton flavor violation in muon decay are considered. Theoretical backgrounds and possible significance on new physics searches by these processes are discussed.

Direct CP violation in three-body decays of the $B$ meson by resonance effects

We discuss direct CP violation in three-body decays of $B$ meson such as $B^\pm \to K^\pmπ^+π^-$, which involves various intermediate resonance states, such as $B^\pm \to K^*_i π^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to ρK^\pm$, where $K^*_i$ represents the $πK$ resonance. Due to the large final state interaction phases of the resonances, the CP asymmetry can be as large as the 25% level near the kinematical region where the $K^*_i$ and $ρ$ resonances overlap. By examining a Dalitz plot of this mode and combining a measurement of the branching ratio for $B^\pm \to ρ^\pm K$, it is possible to extract the weak phase, $ϕ_3$= arg$(-V_{ud}V_{ub}^*/(V_{cd}V_{cb}^*))$, of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.

$b \to s \ell\overline{\ell}$ process and multi-Higgs doublet model

Rare $b$ decay processes are analyzed in the multi-Higgs doublet model. Taking account of the constraint from the $b\to s γ$ process, the branching ratio and the forward-backward asymmetry of the final leptons for the $b\to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ process are calculated. It is shown that the branching ratio can be a few times larger than the standard model prediction and the asymmetry can be significantly different from that in the standard model. Combining these observable quantities it is possible to determine complex coupling constants associated with the charged Higgs mixing matrix. The CP violating charge asymmetry in the $b\to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ process and the branching ratio of the $b\to s ν\barν$ process are also calculated.

Phenomenology of the Higgs sector in supersymmetric standard model

Several topics related to phenomenology of the Higgs sector in the supersymmetric standard model are reviewed. The upper bound of the lightest Higgs mass in the minimal supersymmetric standard model as well as extended version of it is discussed and it is shown that an $e^+ e^-$ linear collider with $\sqrt{s}\sim300 - 500$ GeV can find at least one Higgs boson in these models. It is also pointed out that the heavy Higgs mass scale may be determined from measurements of the Higgs boson decay branching ratios even if we only discover the lightest Higgs boson at early stage of the linear collider experiment.

$b \to s l \bar l $ in the minimal supergravity model

The $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ process is studied in the minimal supergravity model in detail. Taking account of the long distance contributions from the $c\overline{c}$ resonances, we calculate the branching ratio and the lepton forward-backward asymmetry in this model. We find that there is a strong correlation between the branching ratios of $b \rightarrow s γ$ and $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ processes and that the interference effect can change the $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ branching ratio in the off-resonance regions by up to $\pm 15%$ depending on the relative phase between the long and short distance contributions. Using various phenomenological constraints including the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s γ$, we show that there are regions in the parameter space where the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ is enhanced by about 50% compared to the SM. We also show that the branching ratio of $b \rightarrow s ν{\overline ν}$ is reduced at most by 10% from the SM prediction.

Background Suppression for $μ\to eγ$ with Polarized Muons

A search for the lepton-flavor violating $μ^{+}\rightarrow e^{+}γ$ decay using polarized muons is revisited in terms of suppression of the serious background arising from an accidental coincidence between a $e^{+}$ in the normal muon decay and a high energy photon in the radiative muon decay, $μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} ν\overlineν γ$. It is found that a high energy photon in $μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} ν\overlineν γ$ decay is preferentially emitted parallel to the muon spin direction, similarly to $e^{+}$ in the normal muon decay. The selective measurements of either $e^{+}$s or photons moving antiparallel to the muon spin direction would suppress the accidental background for $μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} γ$ with right-handed and left-handed $e^{+}$s respectively.

$μ\to eγ$ Search with Polarized Muons

A search for the lepton-flavor violating $μ^{+}\rightarrow e^{+}γ$ decay using polarized muons is proposed. By measuring the angular distribution of $e^{+}$s with respect to the muon spin direction, in particular antiparallel $e^{+}$s, the serious physics background from $μ^{+}\rightarrow e^{+}ν\overlineνγ$ as well as accidental background from normal muon decay accompanied by a high-energy photon can be suppressed significantly. In addition to the enhancement of the sensitivity, the angular distribution would discriminate among different extensions to the Standard Model, once the signal is observed.

Charged Higgs mass bound from the $b \to s γ$ process in the minimal supergravity

The constraint on the mass of the charged Higgs boson from the recent measurement of the inclusive $b \rightarrow s γ$ decay is studied in a framework of the minimal supergravity. It is shown that the lower bound for the charged Higgs mass crucially depends on the sign of the higgsino mass parameter ($μ$). For $μ<0$, the bound exceeds 400 GeV when the ratio of two Higgs vacuum expectation values ($\tanβ$) is larger than 10. No strong bound is obtained for $μ>0$ due to cancellations between charged Higgs and supersymmetric particle contributions.

$B^0$--$\overline{B}^0$ mixing and $ε_K$ parameter in the minimal supergravity model

\bb mixing and a CP violation parameter in \kk mixing $ε_K$ are studied in the minimal supergravity model. We solve the one-loop renormalization group equations for the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) parameters numerically in order to determine the masses and mixings of the supersymmetric particles, while all off-diagonal (generation mixing) elements and phases of Yukawa coupling matrices and those of squark mass matrices are taken into account. Applying the radiative electroweak symmetry breaking condition and phenomenological constraints including the recent measurement of the \bsg inclusive branching ratio, we obtain the allowed parameter region. We have found that the present constraints still allow a parameter region where both \bb mass splitting $ΔM_B$ and $ε_K$ are $\sim 20$\% larger than the standard model values. By explicit numerical calculations, we have also found that the complex phase of \bb mixing matrix element in this model is almost the same as the standard model value in a good accuracy in the whole allowed parameter region. It is shown that $ΔM_B$ and $ε_K$ can put useful constraints on the supersymmetry's parameter space when the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are determined through the measurements of CP violations in $B$ decay with future $B$-factories.

SUSY and CP Violation

Flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes are discussed in the minimal supergravity model. The constraint on charged Higgs mass from the new measurement of the inclusive branching ratio of the $b\rightarrow sγ$ process is obtained. The $B^0_d-\bar{B}^0_d$ mixing parameter ($x_d$) and the CP violating parameter in the $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ mixing ($ε_K$) are calculated in this model and it is shown that these parameters can be enhanced by 10\% $\sim$ 20 \% compared to the prediction within the standard model. Impacts on new physics search at B factories are also discussed.
