Quantum Fluctuations of Chirality in One-Dimensional Spin-1/2 Multiferroics: Gapless Dielectric Response from Phasons and Chiral Solitons

We present a quantum theory for one-dimensional spin-1/2 multiferroics, where the vector spin chirality couples with the electric polarization. Based on exact diagonalization and bosonization, it is shown that quantum fluctuations appreciably reduce the chiral ordering amplitude and the associated ferroelectric polarization. This yields nearly collinear spin correlations in short-range scales, in qualitative agreement with recent neutron scattering experiments. There appear gapless chirality excitations described by phasons and new solitons, which can be experimentally verified from the low-energy dielectric response.

Exact spin dynamics of the 1/r^2 supersymmetric t-J model in a magnetic field

The dynamical spin structure factor S^{zz}(Q,omega) in the small momentum region is derived analytically for the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with 1/r^2 interaction. Strong spin-charge separation is found in the spin dynamics. The structure factor S^{zz}(Q,omega) with a given spin polarization does not depend on the electron density in the small momentum region. In the thermodynamic limit, only two spinons and one antispinon (magnon) contribute to S^{zz}(Q,omega). These results are derived via solution of the SU(2,1) Sutherland model in the strong coupling limit.

Saturated Ferromagnetism from Statistical Transmutation in Two Dimensions

The total spin of the ground state is calculated in the U -> infinity Hubbard model with uniform magnetic flux perpendicular to a square lattice, in the absence of Zeeman coupling. It is found that the saturated ferromagnetism emerges in a rather wide region in the space of the flux density ϕand the electron density n_e. In particular, the saturated ferromagnetism at ϕ= n_e is induced by the formation of a spin-1/2 boson, which is a composite of an electron and the unit flux quantum.

Coexistence of d_{x^2-y^2}-Wave Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism Induced by a Staggered Field

The two-dimensional t-J model in a staggered field is studied by exact diagonalization of small clusters. For the low-hole-density region and a realistic value of J/t, it is found that the presence of a staggered field strengthens the attraction between two holes. With increasing field, the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconducting correlations are enhanced while the extended-s-wave ones hardly change. This implies that coexistence of the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconducting order and the commensurate antiferromagnetic order occurs in a staggered field.

Electron Addition Spectrum in the Supersymmetric t-J Model with Inverse-Square Interaction

The electron addition spectrum A^+(k,omega) is obtained analytically for the one-dimensional (1D) supersymmetric t-J model with 1/r^2 interaction. The result is obtained first for a small-sized system and its validity is checked against the numerical calculation. Then the general expression is found which is valid for arbitrary size of the system. The thermodynamic limit of A^+(k,omega) has a simple analytic form with contributions from one spinon, one holon and one antiholon all of which obey fractional statistics. The upper edge of A^+(k,omega) in the (k,omega) plane includes a delta-function peak which reduces to that of the single-electron band in the low-density limit.

Dynamical Properties of the 1/r^2-Type Supersymmetric t-J Model in a Magnetic Field: Manifestation of Spin-Charge Separation

Quasi-particle picture in a magnetic field is pursued for dynamical spin and charge correlation functions of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with inverse-square interaction. With use of exact diagonalization and the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz equations for finite systems, excitation contents of relevant excited states are identified which are valid in the thermodynamic limit. The excitation contents are composed of spinons, antispinons, holons and antiholons obeying fractional statistics. Both longitudinal and transverse components of the dynamical spin structure factor are independent of the electron density in the region where only quasi-particles with spin degrees of freedom (spinons and antispinons) contribute. The dynamical charge structure factor does not depend on the spin-polarization density in the region where only quasi-particles with charge (holons and antiholons) are excited. These features indicate the strong spin-charge separation in dynamics, reflecting the high symmetry of the model.

Exact Dynamics of the SU(K) Haldane-Shastry Model

The dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ of the SU(K) (K=2,3,4) Haldane-Shastry model is derived exactly at zero temperature for arbitrary size of the system. The result is interpreted in terms of free quasi-particles which are generalization of spinons in the SU(2) case; the excited states relevant to $S(q,ω)$ consist of K quasi-particles each of which is characterized by a set of K-1 quantum numbers. Near the boundaries of the region where $S(q,ω)$ is nonzero, $S(q,ω)$ shows the power-law singularity. It is found that the divergent singularity occurs only in the lowest edges starting from $(q,ω) = (0,0)$ toward positive and negative q. The analytic result is checked numerically for finite systems via exact diagonalization and recursion methods.

Exact dynamical structure factor of the degenerate Haldane-Shastry model

The dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ of the K-component (K = 2,3,4) spin chain with the 1/r^2 exchange is derived exactly at zero temperature for arbitrary size of the system. The result is interpreted in terms of a free quasi-particle picture which is generalization of the spinon picture in the SU(2) case; the excited states consist of K quasi-particles each of which is characterized by a set of K-1 quantum numbers. Divergent singularities of $S(q,ω)$ at the spectral edges are derived analytically. The analytic result is checked numerically for finite systems.

Exact Charge Dynamics in the Supersymmetric t-J Model with Inverse-Square Interaction

Dynamical charge structure factor $N(Q,ω)$ with $Q$ smaller than the Fermi wave number is derived analytically for the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with $1/r^2$ interaction. Strong spin-charge separation in dynamics is found. $N(Q,ω)$ with given electron density does not depend on the spin polarization for arbitrary size of the system. In the thermodynamic limit, only two holons and one antiholon contribute to $N(Q,ω)$. These results together with generalized ones for the SU($K$,1) supersymmetric t-J model are derived via solution of the Sutherland model in the strong coupling limit.

Dynamical Properties of the One-Dimensional Supersymmetric t-J Model: A View from Elementary Excitations

Dynamical properties, such as dynamical spin and charge structure factors and single-particle spectral functions, are studied for the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with inverse-square interaction. Exact diagonalization and the recursion method are used for finite systems up to 16 sites. A simple rule is proposed to understand the supermultiplet structure in the excitation spectrum. Numerical calculations show that the dynamical spin structure factor is independent of the electron density in the region where only two spinons contribute. In the electron removal spectrum from half-filling, close correspondence is found between the dominant contribution from three-spinon plus one-holon states in the t-J model and the two-spinon excitations in the Haldane-Shastry model. Comparison is made with dynamics of the nearest-neighbor supersymmetric t-J model.

Dynamical Structure Factors of the Spin-1/2 XXZ Chain with Inverse-Square Exchange and Ising Anisotropy

The dynamical properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain are studied by the exact diagonalization and the recursion method of finite systems up to 24 sites. Two types of the exchange interaction are considered: one is the nearest-neighbor type, and the other is the inverse-square one. As the Ising anisotropy becomes larger, there appears a noticeable difference in the transverse component S^{xx}(q,ω) between the two types of the exchange. For the nearest-neighbor type, the peak frequency of S^{xx}(q,ω) for each q approaches the center of the continuum spectrum. On the contrary, the peak frequency for the inverse-square type moves to the upper edge of the continuum, and separates from the continuum for the anisotropy larger than the threshold value. Whether the interaction between domain walls (solitons) is absent or repulsive in the Ising limit leads to this difference in the behavior of S^{xx}(q,ω). In the longitudinal component S^{zz}(q,ω), on the other hand, the feature of the dynamics is scarcely different between the two types. The energy gap and the static properties are also discussed.

Spin Dynamics of the One-Dimensional J-J' Model and Spin-Peierls Transition in CuGeO_3

Spin dynamics as well as static properties of the one-dimensional J-J' model (S=1/2, J>0 and 0\le α=J'/J\le 0.5) are studied by the exact diagonalization and the recursion method of finite systems up to 26 sites. Especially, the dynamical structure factor S(q,ω) is investigated carefully for various values of α. As αincreases beyond the gapless-gapful critical value α_c=0.2411, there appear features definitely different from the Heisenberg model but the same with the Majumdar-Ghosh model. Some of these features depend only on the value of αand not on δ: a parameter introduced for the coupling alternation. By comparing these results with a recent inelastic neutron scattering spectrum of an inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3 [M. Arai et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 77 (1996) 3649], it is found that the frustration by J' in CuGeO_3 is unexpectedly strong (α=0.4-0.45), and at least αmust be larger than α_c to some extent. The value of J is evaluated at \sim 180K consistent with other estimations. The coupling alternation is extremely small. This large frustration is a primary origin of the various anomalous properties CuGeO_3 possesses. For comparison we refer also to α'-NaV_2O_5.

Partially Solvable Anisotropic t-J Model with Long-Range Interactions

A new anisotropic t-J model in one dimension is proposed which has long-range hopping and exchange. This t-J model is only partially solvable in contrast to known integrable models with long-range interaction. In the high-density limit the model reduces to the XXZ chain with the long-range exchange. Some exact eigenfunctions are shown to be of Jastrow-type if certain conditions for an anisotropy parameter are satisfied. The ground state as well as the excitation spectrum for various cases of the anisotropy parameter and filling are derived numerically. It is found that the Jastrow-type wave function is an excellent trial function for any value of the anisotropy parameter.
