Strong Electron-Electron Interactions of a Tomonaga--Luttinger Liquid Observed in InAs Quantum Wires

We report strong electron-electron interactions in quantum wires etched from an InAs quantum well, a material known to have strong spin-orbit interactions. We find that the current through the wires as a function of the bias voltage and temperature follows the universal scaling behavior of a Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid. Using a universal scaling formula, we extract the interaction parameter and find strong electron-electron interactions, increasing as the wires become more depleted. We establish theoretically that spin-orbit interactions cause only minor modifications of the interaction parameter in this regime, indicating that genuinely strong electron-electron interactions are indeed achieved in the device. Our results suggest that etched InAs wires provide a platform with both strong electron-electron and strong spin-orbit interactions.

Theory of a Carbon-Nanotube Polarization Switch

Recently, it was suggested that the polarization dependence of light absorption to a single-walled carbon nanotube is altered by carrier doping. We specify theoretically the doping level at which the polarization anisotropy is reversed by plasmon excitation. The plasmon energy is mainly determined by the diameter of a nanotube, because pseudospin makes the energy independent of the details of the band structure. We find that the effect of doping on the Coulomb interaction appears through the screened exchange energy, which can be observed as changes in the absorption peak positions. Our results strongly suggest the possibility that oriented nanotubes function as a polarization switch.

Theory of coherent quantum phase-slips in Josephson junction chains with periodic spatial modulations

We study coherent quantum phase-slips which lift the ground state degeneracy in a Josephson junction ring, pierced by a magnetic flux of the magnitude equal to half of a flux quantum. The quantum phase-slip amplitude is sensitive to the normal mode structure of superconducting phase oscillations in the ring (Mooij-Schön modes). These, in turn, are affected by spatial inhomogeneities in the ring. We analyze the case of weak periodic modulations of the system parameters and calculate the corresponding modification of the quantum phase-slip amplitude.

Excess entropy production in quantum system: Quantum master equation approach

For open systems described by the quantum master equation (QME), we investigate the excess entropy production under quasistatic operations between nonequilibrium steady states. The average entropy production is composed of the time integral of the instantaneous steady entropy production rate and the excess entropy production. We propose to define average entropy production rate using the average energy and particle currents, which are calculated by using the full counting statistics with QME. The excess entropy production is given by a line integral in the control parameter space and its integrand is called the Berry-Sinitsyn-Nemenman (BSN) vector. In the weakly nonequilibrium regime, we show that BSN vector is described by $\ln \breveρ_0$ and $ρ_0$ where $ρ_0$ is the instantaneous steady state of the QME and $\breveρ_0$ is that of the QME which is given by reversing the sign of the Lamb shift term. If the system Hamiltonian is non-degenerate or the Lamb shift term is negligible, the excess entropy production approximately reduces to the difference between the von Neumann entropies of the system. Additionally, we point out that the expression of the entropy production obtained in the classical Markov jump process is different from our result and show that these are approximately equivalent only in the weakly nonequilibrium regime.

Memory effect and pseudomode amplitude in non-Markovian dynamics of a two level system

We study non-Markovian dynamics of a two level atom using pseudomode method. Because of the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics, the atom receives back information and excited energy from the reservoir at a later time, which causes more complicated behaviors than Markovian dynamics. With pseudomode method, non-Markovian dynamics of the atom can be mapped into Markovian dynamics of the atom and pseudomode. We show that by using pseudomode method and quantum jump approach for Markovian dynamics, we get a physically intuitive insight into the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics. It suggests a simple physical meaning of the memory time of a non-Markovian reservoir.

Quantum adiabatic pumping by modulating tunnel phase in quantum dots

In a mesoscopic system, under zero bias voltage, a finite charge is transferred by quantum adiabatic pumping by adiabatically and periodically changing two or more control parameters. We obtained expressions for the pumped charge for a ring of three quantum dots (QDs) by choosing the magnetic flux penetrating the ring as one of the control parameters. We found that the pumped charge shows a steplike behavior with respect to the variance of the flux. The value of the step heights is not universal but depends on the trajectory of the control parameters. We discuss the physical origin of this behavior on the basis of the Fano resonant condition of the ring.

Hybrid quantum magnetic field sensor with an electron spin and a nuclear spin in diamond

Recently, magnetic field sensors based on an electron spin of a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond have been studied both from an experimental and theoretical point of view. This system provides a nanoscale magnetometer, and it is possible to detect a precession of a single spin. In this paper, we propose a sensor consisting of an electron spin and a nuclear spin in diamond. Although the electron spin has a reasonable interaction strength with magnetic field, the coherence time of the spin is relatively short. On the other hand, the nuclear spin has a longer life time while the spin has a negligible interaction with magnetic fields. We show that, through the combination of such two different spins via the hyperfine interaction, it is possible to construct a magnetic field sensor with the sensitivity far beyond that of previous sensors using just a single electron spin.

Interaction effect on adiabatic pump of charge and spin in quantum dot

We investigate the pumped charge and spin at zero-bias by adiabatic modulation of two control parameters using the full counting statistics with quantum master equation approach. First we study higher order effects of the pumping frequency in general Markov systems and show the equivalence between our approach and the real-time diagrammatic approach. An adiabatic modulation of the control parameters induces the Berry-Sinitsyn-Nemenman (BSN) phase. We show that the origin of the BSN phase is a non-adiabatic effect. The adiabatically pumped charge (spin) is given by a summation of (i) a time integral of the instantaneous steady charge (spin) current and (ii) a geometric surface integral of the BSN curvature, which results from the BSN phase. In quantum dots (QDs) weakly coupled to two leads, we show that (i) is usually dominant if the thermodynamic parameters are modulated although it is zero if the thermodynamic parameters are fixed to zero-bias. To observe the spin effects, we consider collinear magnetic fields, which relate to spins through the Zeeman effect, with different amplitudes applying to the QDs and the leads. For interacting one level QD, we calculate analytically the pumped charge and spin by modulating the magnetic fields and the coupling strengths to the leads in the weak and strong interacting limits. We show that the difference between these two limits appears through the averages of the numbers of the electron with up and down spin in the QD. For the quantum pump by the modulation of the magnetic fields of the QD and one lead, the energy-dependences of linewidth functions, which are usually neglected, are essential.

Spin-1 Quantum Walks

We study the quantum walks of two interacting spin-1 bosons. We derive an exact solution for the time-dependent wave function that describes the two-particle dynamics governed by the one-dimensional spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model. We show that propagation dynamics in real space and mixing dynamics in spin space are correlated via the spin-dependent interaction in this system. The spin-mixing dynamics has two characteristic frequencies in the limit of large spin-dependent interactions. One of the characteristic frequencies is determined by the energy difference between two bound states, and the other frequency relates to the cotunneling process of a pair of spin-1 bosons. Furthermore, we numerically analyze the growth of the spin correlations in quantum walks. We find that long-range spin correlations emerge showing a clear dependence on the sign of the spin-dependent interaction and the initial state.

Determination of intrinsic lifetime of edge magnetoplasmons

It is known that peculiar plasmons whose frequencies are purely imaginary exist in the interior of a two-dimensional electronic system described by the Drude model. We show that when an external magnetic field is applied to the system, these bulk plasmons are still non-oscillating and are isolated from the magnetoplasmons by the energy gap of the cyclotron frequency. These are mainly in a transverse magnetic mode and can combine with a transverse electronic mode locally at an edge of the system to form edge magnetoplasmons. With this observation, we reveal the intrinsic long lifetime of edge magnetoplasmons for the first time.

Coulomb interaction-induced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations

We study the Coulomb interaction-induced Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the linear response transport through a remote quantum dot which has no tunnel coupling but has Coulomb coupling with the quantum dot embedded in an AB interferometer. We show that the Coulomb interaction-induced AB effect is characterized by a charge susceptibility of a remote quantum dot in a weak interaction regime. In a strong but finite interaction regime, around the particle-hole symmetric point, there exists the region where the visibility of the induced AB oscillations becomes one although the visibility of the original AB oscillations in the interferometer is low.

Ultimate low system dark count rate for superconducting nanowire single-photon detector

The dark count rate (DCR) is a key parameter of single-photon detectors. By introducing a bulk optical band-pass filter mounted on a fiber-to-fiber optical bench cooled at 3 K and blocking down to 5 micrometer, we suppressed the DCR of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector by more than three orders of magnitude. The DCR is limited by the blackbody radiation through a signal passband of 20 nm bandwidth. The figure of merit, system detection efficiency, and DCR were 2.7 x 10^11, 2.3 %, and 0.001 Hz, respectively. Narrowing the bandwidth to 100 GHz suppresses the DCR to 0.0001 Hz and the figure of merit increases to 1.8 x 10^12.

Semiclassical Klein Tunneling and Valley Hall Effect in Graphene

We study the dynamics of semiclassical electrons in (gapped) graphene in two complementary limits, i.e. in the Klein tunneling and valley Hall effect regimes, by scattering wave packets off armchair step potentials and by exposing wave packets to a uniform electric field, respectively. Our numerical wave packet simulation goes beyond semiclassical analytical approximations and standard Klein tunneling treatments and allows to study intra- and intervalley scattering processes. We find distinct Klein tunneling characteristics for low and tall steps, which include unusual Berry curvature induced side shifts of the scattered wave packet trajectories. In the presence of a uniform field, our simulations capture the semiclassical valley Hall effect which manifests in the form of laterally shifted Bloch oscillations. Such anomalous trajectory corrections can be relevant for Klein tunneling experiments and electron optics devices. We present detailed simulation results.

Valley-antisymmetric potential in graphene under dynamical deformation

When graphene is deformed in a dynamical manner, a time-dependent potential is induced for the electrons. The potential is antisymmetric with respect to valleys, and some straightforward applications are found for Raman spectroscopy. We show that a valley-antisymmetric potential broadens Raman $D$ band but does not affect $2D$ band, which is already observed by recent experiments. The space derivative of the valley antisymmetric potential gives a force field that accelerates intervalley phonons, while it corresponds to the longitudinal component of the previously discussed pseudoelectric field acting on the electrons. Effects of a pseudoelectric field on the electron is quite difficult to observe due to the valley-antisymmetric coupling constant, on the other hand, such obstacle is absent for intervalley phonons with $A_{1g}$ symmetry that constitute the $D$ and $2D$ bands.

Power dependence of electric dipole spin resonance

We develop a formalism of electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) based on slanting magnetic field, where we especially investigate the microwave amplitude dependence. With increasing microwave amplitude, the Rabi frequency increases linearly for a spin confined in a harmonic potential. How- ever, when the spin is confined in the double-well potential, the Rabi frequency shows sub-linear dependence with increasing the microwave amplitude.

Slow light enhanced correlated photon pair generation in photonic-crystal coupled-resonator optical waveguides

We demonstrate the generation of quantum-correlated photon pairs from a Si photonic-crystal coupled-resonator optical waveguide. A slow-light supermode realized by the collective resonance of high-Q and small-mode-volume photonic-crystal cavities successfully enhanced the efficiency of the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. The generation rate of photon pairs was improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that of a photonic-crystal line defect waveguide without a slow-light effect.

The origin of Raman D Band: Bonding and Antibonding Orbitals in Graphene

In Raman spectroscopy of graphite and graphene, the $D$ band at $\sim 1355$cm$^{-1}$ is used as the indication of the dirtiness of a sample. However, our analysis suggests that the physics behind the $D$ band is closely related to a very clear idea for describing a molecule, namely bonding and antibonding orbitals in graphene. In this paper, we review our recent work on the mechanism for activating the $D$ band at a graphene edge.

A monolithically integrated polarization entangled photon pair source on a silicon chip

Integrated photonic circuits are one of the most promising platforms for large-scale photonic quantum information systems due to their small physical size and stable interferometers with near-perfect lateral-mode overlaps. Since many quantum information protocols are based on qubits defined by the polarization of photons, we must develop integrated building blocks to generate, manipulate, and measure the polarization-encoded quantum state on a chip. The generation unit is particularly important. Here we show the first integrated polarization-entangled photon pair source on a chip. We have implemented the source as a simple and stable silicon-on-insulator photonic circuit that generates an entangled state with 91 \pm 2% fidelity. The source is equipped with versatile interfaces for silica-on-silicon or other types of waveguide platforms that accommodate the polarization manipulation and projection devices as well as pump light sources. Therefore, we are ready for the full-scale implementation of photonic quantum information systems on a chip.
