Photoelectron spectroscopy of 3s3p doubly excited helium dressed with strong near-infrared laser fields

We report time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the $3s3p$ doubly excited states of helium dressed by an intense near-infrared (NIR) laser field. Using synchronized XUV free-electron-laser and 800-nm NIR laser pulses, we observe a pronounced delay-dependent shift of resonance-related spectral minima together with the emergence of additional structures around the NIR sideband energy. \textit{Ab initio} theoretical calculations support these observations and identify the features as signatures of NIR-induced coupling of the bright ($3s3p {}^{1}P^{o}$) autoionizing state to nearby dark ($^{1}D^{e}$ and $^{1}S^{e}$) resonances below the $N = 3$ threshold. A multichannel Fano resonance analysis of the measured spectra yields delay-dependent line-shape parameters and resonance energies, establishing a quantitative route to characterize and control correlated two-electron resonances in strong laser fields.

Spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction of synchrotron radiation

Ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet electric-fields produced by relativistic electrons in an undulator of a synchrotron light source are characterized by using spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER). A tandem undulator with a phase shifter produces a pair of wavelength shifted wave packets with some delay. The interferogram between the pair of the wave packets is analyzed with a SPIDER algorithm, which is widely used for ultrashort pulse characterization. As a result, a 10-cycle square shaped electric-field is reconstructed. The waveform corresponds to the radiation from an electron accelerated with the undulator which consists of 10 periods of permanent magnets.

Specific chemical bond relaxation unravelled by analysis of shake-up satellites in the oxygen single site double core hole spectrum of CO$_2$

We developed recently [A. Ferté, et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 4359 (2020)] a method to compute single site double core hole (ssDCH or K$^{-2}$) spectra. We refer to that method as NOTA+CIPSI. In the present paper this method is applied to the O K$^{-2}$ spectrum of the CO$_2$ molecule, and we use this as an example to discuss in detail its convergence properties. Using this approach, a theoretical spectra in excellent agreement with the experimental one is obtained. Thanks to a thorough interpretation of the shake-up states responsible for the main satellite peaks and with the help of a comparison with the O K$^{-2}$ spectrum of CO, we can highlight the clear signature of the two non equivalent carbon oxygen bonds in the oxygen ssDCH CO$_2$ dication.
