Representation Theory of Canonical Commutation Relations Arising from the Quantization of the Klein-Gordon Equation with an External Potential

We investigate the Weyl representation of the canonical commutation relations for a model describing a quantized massive scalar field under the influence of an external potential. The main problem is to determine whether the Weyl representation remains equivalent to or becomes inequivalent to the original one when the mass and/or potential are changed. This problem is reduced to the study of Schrödinger operators. It turns out that the Weyl representations are inequivalent when the masses differ. Moreover, when the masses are the same, the transition between equivalence and inequivalence occurs at the decay rate $-3/2$ of the difference between the potentials. This contrasts with the decay rate $-1$ that defines the short-range condition in scattering theory.

Classification of abstract Bose field models

We classify a class of abstract Bose field models in quantum field theory up to unitary equivalence. The class includes abstract free Bose field models, abstract van Hove--Miyatake models, and infrared-renormalized van Hove--Miyatake models. Moreover, as an application of our classification, we classify quadratic interaction models. In particular, our results answer a question of A. Arai concerning the classification of infrared-renormalized van Hove--Miyatake models.

Holomorphy of the ground state and energy for bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians

We study the holomorphy of the ground state and its energy with respect to the coupling constant for bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians. We prove general theorems establishing this holomorphy, thereby providing a rigorous justification for formal perturbative expansions. This theory is applied to several concrete models, including the single pair interaction model and the Pauli-Fierz model in the dipole approximation. Importantly, for the Pauli-Fierz model with a realistic ultraviolet cutoff, the perturbation expansions in the elementary charge converge at the physical charge value, even when mass renormalization is taken into account. Furthermore, we explicitly determine the radii of convergence of the ground states and their energies for both the single pair interaction model and the fibers of the translation-invariant Pauli-Fierz model.

The Witten index for one-dimensional split-step quantum walks under the non-Fredholm condition

It is recently shown that a split-step quantum walk possesses a chiral symmetry, and that a certain well-defined index can be naturally assigned to it. The index is a well-defined Fredholm index if and only if the associated unitary time-evolution operator has spectral gaps at both $+1$ and $-1.$ In this paper we extend the existing index formula for the Fredholm case to encompass the non-Fredholm case (i.e., gapless case). We make use of a natural extension of the Fredholm index to the non-Fredholm case, known as the Witten index. The aim of this paper is to fully classify the Witten index of the split-step quantum walk by employing the spectral shift function for a rank one perturbation of a fourth order difference operator. It is also shown in this paper that the Witten index can take half-integer values in the non-Fredholm case.

Index Theorems for One-dimensional Chirally Symmetric Quantum Walks with Asymptotically Periodic Parameters

We focus on index theory for chirally symmetric discrete-time quantum walks on the one-dimensional integer lattice. Such a discrete-time quantum walk model can be characterised as a pair of a unitary self-adjoint operator $\varGamma$ and a unitary time-evolution operator $U,$ satisfying the chiral symmetry condition $U^* = \varGamma U \varGamma.$ The significance of this index theory lies in the fact that the index we assign to the pair $(\varGamma,U)$ gives a lower bound for the number of symmetry protected edge-states associated with the time-evolution $U.$ The symmetry protection of edge-states is one of the important features of the bulk-edge correspondence. The purpose of the present paper is to revisit the well-known bulk-edge correspondence for the split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice. The existing mathematics literature makes use of a fundamental assumption, known as the $2$-phase condition, but we completely replace it by the so-called asymptotically periodic assumption in this article. This generalisation heavily relies on analysis of some topological invariants associated with Toeplitz operators.

The bulk-edge correspondence for the split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice

Suzuki's split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice can be naturally viewed as a chirally symmetric quantum walk. Given the unitary time-evolution of such a chirally symmetric quantum walk, we can separately introduce well-defined indices for the eigenvalues $\pm 1.$ The bulk-edge correspondence for Suzuki's split-step quantum walk is twofold. Firstly, we show that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues $\pm 1$ coincide with the absolute values of the associated indices. Note that this can be viewed as the symmetry protection of bound states, and that the indices we consider are robust in the sense that these depend only on the asymptotic behaviour of the parameters of the given model. Secondly, we show that that such bound states exhibit exponential decay at spatial infinity.

Large scale geometry of Banach-Lie groups

We initiate the large scale geometric study of Banach-Lie groups, especially of linear Banach-Lie groups. We show that the exponential length, originally introduced by Ringrose for unitary groups of $C^*$-algebras, defines the quasi-isometry type of any connected Banach-Lie group. As an illustrative example, we consider unitary groups of separable abelian unital $C^*$-algebras with spectrum having finitely many components, which we classify up to topological isomorphism and up to quasi-isometry, in order to highlight the difference. The main results then concern the Haagerup property, and Properties (T) and (FH). We present the first non-trivial non-abelian and non-localy compact groups having the Haagerup property, most of them being non-amenable. These are the groups $\mathcal{U}_2(M,τ)$, where $M$ is a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a normal faithful semifinite trace $τ$. Finally, we investigate the groups $\mathrm{E}_n(A)$, which are closed subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,A)$ generated by elementary matrices, where $A$ is a unital Banach algebra. We show that for $n\geq 3$, all these groups have Property (T) and they are unbounded, so they have Property (FH) non-trivially. On the other hand, if $A$ is an infinite-dimensional unital $C^*$-algebra, then $\mathrm{E}_2(A)$ does not have the Haagerup property. If $A$ is moreover abelian and separable, then $\mathrm{SL}(2,A)$ does not have the Haagerup property.

Explicit Diagonalization of Pair Interaction Models

We provide a general method for constructing bosonic Bogoliubov transformations that diagonalize a general class of quadratic Hamiltonians. These Hamiltonians describe the pair interaction models. Bogoliubov transformations are constructed algebraically, and the resulting Hamiltonians become the second quantizations of explicit one-particle Hamiltonians. Moreover, an explicit formula for the ground state energies is given. Our method systematically diagonalizes various models of quantum field theory, including a model of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a Bose field and the Pauli-Fierz models in the dipole approximation.

Time operators for continuous-time and discrete-time quantum walks

We construct concrete examples of time operators for both continuous and discrete-time homogeneous quantum walks, and we determine their deficiency indices and spectra. For a discrete-time quantum walk, the time operator can be self-adjoint if the time evolution operator has a non-zero winding number. In this case, its spectrum becomes a discrete set of real numbers.

An index theorem for split-step quantum walks

Split-step quantum walks are models of supersymmetric quantum walk, and thus their Witten indices can be defined. We prove that the Witten index of a split-step quantum walk coincides with the difference between the winding numbers of functions corresponding to the right-limit of coins and the left-limit of coins. As a corollary, we give an alternative derivation of the index formula for split-step quantum walks, which is recently obtained by Suzuki and Tanaka.

Polish groups of unitaries

We study the question of which Polish groups can be realized as subgroups of the unitary group of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. We also show that for a separable unital C$^*$-algebra $A$, the identity component $\mathcal{U}_0(A)$ of its unitary group has property (OB) of Rosendal (hence it also has property (FH)) if and only if the algebra has finite exponential length (e.g. if it has real rank zero), while in many cases the unitary group $\mathcal{U}(A)$ does not have property (T). On the other hand, the $p$-unitary group $\mathcal{U}_p(M,τ)$ where $M$ is a properly infinite semifinite von Neumann algbera with separable predual, does not have property (FH) for any $1\le p<\infty$. This in particular solves a problem left unanswered in the work of Pestov \cite{Pestov18}.

Unitarizability, Maurey--Nikishin factorization, and Polish groups of finite type

Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, and let $π\colon Γ\to {\rm{GL}}(H)$ be a representation of $Γ$ by invertible operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$. We show that the semidirect product group $G=H\rtimes_πΓ$ is SIN ($G$ admits a two-sided invariant metric compatible with its topology) and unitarily representable ($G$ embeds into the unitary group $\mathcal{U}(\ell^2(\mathbb N))$), if and only if $π$ is uniformly bounded, and that $π$ is unitarizable if and only if $G$ is of finite type: that is, $G$ embeds into the unitary group of a II$_1$-factor. Consequently, we show that a unitarily representable Polish SIN groups need not be of finite type, answering a question of Sorin Popa. The key point in our argument is an equivariant version of the Maurey--Nikishin factorization theorem for continuous maps from a Hilbert space to the space $L^0(X,m)$ of all measurable maps on a probability space.

When does the Weyl-von Neumann Theorem hold?

A famous theorem due to Weyl and von Neumann asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts, if and only if their essential spectrum agree. The above theorem does not hold for unbounded operators. Nevertheless, there exist closed subsets $M$ of $\mathbb{R}$ on which the Weyl--von Neumann Theorem hold: all (not necessarily bounded) self-adjoint operators with essential spectrum $M$ are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts. In this paper, we determine exactly which $M$ satisfies this property.

Non-commutative hypergroup of order five

We prove that all hypergroups of order four are commutative and that there exists a non-comutative hypergroup of order five. These facts imply that the minimum order of non-commutative hypergroups is five even though the minimum order of non-commutative groups is six.

On Borel equivalence relations related to self-adjoint operators

In a recent work, the authors studied various Borel equivalence relations defined on the Polish space ${\rm{SA}}(H)$ of all (not necessarily bounded) self-adjoint operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$. In this paper we study the domain equivalence relation $E_{\rm{dom}}^{\rm{SA}(H)}$ given by $AE_{\rm{dom}}^{\rm{SA}(H)}B\Leftrightarrow {\rm{dom}}{A}={\rm{dom}}{B}$ and determine its exact Borel complexity: $E_{\rm{dom}}^{\rm{SA}(H)}$ is an $F_σ$ (but not $K_σ$) equivalence relation which is continuously bireducible with the orbit equivalence relation $E_{\ell^{\infty}}^{\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}}$ of the standard Borel group $\ell^{\infty}=\ell^{\infty}(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{R})$ on $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$. This, by Rosendal's Theorem, shows that $E_{\rm{dom}}^{\rm{SA}(H)}$ is universal for $K_σ$ equivalence relations. Moreover, we show that generic self-adjoint operators have purely singular continuous spectrum equal to $\mathbb{R}$.

Weyl-von Neumann Theorem and Borel Complexity of Unitary Equivalence Modulo Compacts of Self-Adjoint Operators

Weyl-von Neumann Theorem asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators $A,B$ on a Hilbert space $H$ are unitarily equivalent modulo compacts, i.e., $uAu^*+K=B$ for some unitary $u\in \mathcal{U}(H)$ and compact self-adjoint operator $K$, if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the same essential spectra: $σ_{\rm{ess}}(A)=σ_{\rm{ess}}(B)$. In this paper we consider to what extent the above Weyl-von Neumann's result can(not) be extended to unbounded operators using descriptive set theory. We show that if $H$ is separable infinite-dimensional, this equivalence relation for bounded self-adjoin operators is smooth, while the same equivalence relation for general self-adjoint operators contains a dense $G_δ$-orbit but does not admit classification by countable structures. On the other hand, apparently related equivalence relation $A\sim B\Leftrightarrow \exists u\in \mathcal{U}(H)\ [u(A-i)^{-1}u^*-(B-i)^{-1}$ is compact], is shown to be smooth. Various Borel or co-analytic equivalence relations related to self-adjoint operators are also presented.

On Polish Groups of Finite Type

Sorin Popa initiated the study of Polish groups which are embeddable into the unitary group of a separable finite von Neumann algebra. Such groups are called of finite type. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for Polish groups to be of finite type, and construct exmaples of such groups from semifinite von Neumann algebras. We also discuss permanence properties of finite type groups under various algebraic operations. Finally we close the paper with some questions concerning Polish groups of finite type.
