Gravitational waves from dark matter collapse in a star

We investigate the collapse of clusters of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the core of a Sun-like star and the possible formation of mini-black holes and the emission of gravitational waves. When the number of WIMPs is small, thermal pressure balances the WIMP cluster's self gravity. If the number of WIMPs is larger than a critical number, thermal pressure cannot balance gravity and the cluster contracts. If WIMPs are collisionless and bosonic, the cluster collapses directly to form a mini-black hole. For fermionic WIMPs, the cluster contracts until it is sustained by Fermi pressure, forming a small compact object. If the fermionic WIMP mass is smaller than $4\times 10^2$ GeV, the radius of the compact object is larger than its Schwarzschild radius and Fermi pressure temporally sustains its self gravity, halting the formation of a black hole. If the fermionic WIMP mass is larger than $4\times 10^2$ GeV, the radius is smaller than its Schwarzschild radius and the compact object becomes a mini-black hole. If the WIMP mass is 1 TeV, the size of the black hole will be approximately 2.5 cm and ultra high frequency gravitational waves will be emitted during black hole formation. The central frequency $f_c$ of ringdown gravitational waves emitted from the black hole will be approximately 2 GHz. To detect the ringdown gravitational waves, the detector's noise must be below $\sqrt{S_h(f_c)}\approx 10^{-30}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$.

Teichmüller parameters for multiple BTZ black hole spacetime

We investigate the Teichmüller parameters for a Euclidean multiple BTZ black hole spacetime. To induce a complex structure in the asymptotic boundary of such a spacetime, we consider the limit in which two black holes are at a large distance from each other. In this limit, we can approximately determine the period matrix (i.e., the Teichmüller parameters) for the spacetime boundary by using a pinching parameter. The Teichmüller parameters are essential in describing the partition function for the boundary conformal field theory (CFT). We provide an interpretation of the partition function for the genus two extremal boundary CFT proposed by Gaiotto and Yin that it is relevant to double BTZ black hole spacetime.

Dynamical instability in a relativistic cylindrical shell composed of counter rotating particles

We give a perturbative analysis for an infinitesimally thin cylindrical shell composed of counter rotating collisionless particles, originally devised by Apostolatos and Thorne. They found a static solution of the shell and concluded by C-energy argument that it is stable. Recently, the present authors and Ida reanalyzed this system by evaluating the C-energy on the future null infinity and found that the system has an instability, though it was not shown how the system is unstable. In this paper, it is shown in the framework of the linear perturbation theory that, if the constituent particles move slowly, the static shell is unstable in the sense that the perturbation of its circumferential radius oscillates with exponentially growing amplitude, whereas if the speed of the constituent particle exceeds a critical value, the shell just expands or contracts exponentially with time.

Particle creation in Bose--Einstein condensates: Theoretical formulation based on conserving gapless mean field theory

We formulate particle creation phenomena in Bose--Einstein condensates in terms of conserving gapless mean field theory for weakly interacting Bose gases. The particle creation spectrum is calculated by rediagonalizing the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in mean field theory. The conservation implies that quasiparticle creation is accompanied by quantum backreaction to the condensates. Particle creation in this mean field theory is found to be equivalent to that in quantum field theory (QFT) in curved spacetime. An expression is obtained for an effective metric affected by quantum backreaction. The formula for the particle creation spectrum obtained in terms of QFT in curved spacetime is shown to be the same as that given by rediagonalizing the BdG Hamiltonian.

Relativistic Gravitational Collapse of a Cylindrical Shell of Dust II: Settling Down Boundary Condition

We numerically study the dynamics of an imploding hollow cylinder composed of dust. Since there is no cylindrical black hole in 4-dimensional spacetime with physically reasonable energy conditions, a collapsed dust cylinder involves a naked singularity accompanied by its causal future, or a fatal singularity which terminates the history of the whole universe. In a previous paper, the present authors have shown that if the dust is assumed to be composed of collisionless particles such that these particles go through the symmetry axis of the cylinder, then the scalar polynomial singularity formed on the symmetry axis is so weak that almost all of geodesics are complete, and thus effectively no singularity forms by the collapse of a hollow dust cylinder. By contrast, in this paper, we assume that whole of the collapsed dust settles down on the symmetry axis by changing its equation of state. Obtained solutions are the straightforward extension of Morgan's null dust solution, in which no gravitational radiation is emitted. However, in the present case with timelike dust, infinite amount of $C$-energy initially stored in the system is released through gravitational radiation. We also show that the gravitational waves asymptotically behave in a self-similar manner.

Spacetime analogue of Bose-Einstein condensates: Bogoliubov-de Gennes formulation

We construct quantum field theory in an analogue curved spacetime in Bose-Einstein condensates based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, by exactly relating quantum particles in curved spacetime with Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. Here, we derive a simple formula relating the two, which can be used to calculate the particle creation spectrum by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Using our formulation, we numerically investigate particle creation in an analogue expanding Universe which can be expressed as Bogoliubov quasiparticles in an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate. We obtain its spectrum, which follows the thermal Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the temperature of which is experimentally attainable. Our derivation of the analogy is useful for general Bose-Einstein condensates and not limited to homogeneous ones, and our simulation is the first example of particle creations by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in an inhomogeneous condensate.

Thermodynamics of Squashed Kaluza-Klein Black Holes and Black Strings -- A Comparison of Reference Backgrounds --

We investigate thermodynamics constructed on different background reference spacetimes for squashed Kaluza-Klein (SqKK) black hole and electrically charged black string in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell system. Two spacetimes are possible to be reference spacetimes giving finite gravitational classical actions: one is four-dimensional Minkowski times a circle and the other is the KK monopole. The boundary of the SqKK black hole can not be matched perfectly to that of the former reference spacetime because of the difference in topology. However, the resultant classical action coincides with that calculated by the counterterm subtraction scheme. The boundary of the KK monopole has the same topology with that of the SqKK black hole and can be matched to the boundary of the black hole perfectly. The resultant action takes different value from the result given by using the former reference spacetime. After a brief review of thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions, we calculate thermodynamic potentials relevant for several thermodynamic environments. The most stable state is different for each environment: For example, the KK monopole is the most stable state in isothermal environment with fixed gravitational tension. On the other hand, when the size of the extra-dimension is fixed, the Minkowski times a circle is the most stable. It is shown that these two spacetimes can be reference spacetimes of the five-dimensional black string.

Formation of a sonic horizon in isotropically expanding Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a simple experiment to create a sonic horizon in isotropically trapped cold atoms within currently available experimental techniques. Numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows that the sonic horizon should appear by making the condensate expand. The expansion is triggered by changing the interaction which can be controlled by the Feshbach resonance in real experiments. The sonic horizon is shown to be quasi-static for sufficiently strong interaction or large number of atoms. The characteristic temperature that is associated with particle emission from the horizon, which corresponds to the Hawking temperature in an ideal situation, is estimated to be a few nK.

New instability in relativistic cylindrically symmetric system

We investigate an infinitesimally thin cylindrical shell composed of counter-rotating dust particles. This system was studied by Apostolatos and Thorne in terms of the C-energy for a bounded domain. In this paper, we reanalyze this system by evaluating the C-energy on the future null infinity. We find that some class of momentarily static and radiation-free initial data does not settle down into static, equilibrium configurations, and otherwise infinite amount of the gravitational radiation is emitted to the future null infinity. Our result implies the existence of an instability in this system. In the framework of the Newtonian gravity, a cylindrical shell composed of counter-rotating dust particles can be in a steady state with oscillation by the gravitational attraction and centrifugal repulsion, and hence a static state is not necessarily realized as a final state. By contrast, in the framework of general relativity, the steady oscillating state will be impossible since the gravitational radiation will carry the energy of the oscillation to infinity. Thus, this instability has no counterpart in the Newtonian gravity.

Mass and Free energy in Thermodynamics of Squashed Kaluza-Klein Black Holes

The Abbott-Deser mass, the Hamiltonian and the Komar mass of the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizons take different values. Introducing a new couple of thermodynamic variables for the Komar mass, we show that each mass can be interpreted as a thermodynamic potential with its own natural variables, i.e. all masses are related to each other by the Legendre transformations. It is found that the new variables and the gravitational tension represent the squashing of the outer horizon.

Relativistic Gravitational Collapse of a Cylindrical Shell of Dust

The gravitational collapse of a thick cylindrical shell of dust matter is investigated. It is found that a spacetime singularity forms on the symmetry axis and that it is necessarily naked, i.e., observable in principle. We propose a physically reasonable boundary condition at this naked singularity to construct the solution including its causal future. This boundary condition enables us to construct the unique continuation of spacetime beyond the naked singularity and ensures that the dust shell passes through the naked singularity. When the cylindrical shell leaves its symmetry axis away, the naked singularity disappears, and regularity is recovered. We construct numerical solutions with this feature. This result implies that the gravity produced by a thick cylindrical shell of dust is too weak to bind the shell even if it engenders the formation of a curvature singularity which is so strong as to satisfy the limiting focusing condition. For this reason, this naked singularity is very weak in the extended spacetime; the metric tensor is $C^{1-}$ even at the naked singularity, and the extended spacetime is complete for almost all geodesics. This feature is also seen for singular hypersurfaces. Such an extended spacetime can be regarded as phenomenological in the sense that it is valid if the relevant microphysics length scale is sufficiently small compared to the scale of interest.

Naked singularity resolution in cylindrical collapse

In this paper, we study the gravitational collapse of null dust in the cylindrically symmetric spacetime. The naked singularity necessarily forms at the symmetry axis. We consider the situation in which null dust is emitted again from the naked singularity formed by the collapsed null dust and investigate the back-reaction by this emission for the naked singularity. We show a very peculiar but physically important case in which the same amount of null dust as that of the collapsed one is emitted from the naked singularity as soon as the ingoing null dust hits the symmetry axis and forms the naked singularity. In this case, although this naked singularity satisfies the strong curvature condition by Królak (limiting focusing condition), geodesics which hit the singularity can be extended uniquely across the singularity. Therefore we may say that the collapsing null dust passes through the singularity formed by itself and then leaves for infinity. Finally the singularity completely disappears and the flat spacetime remains.

CFT description of three-dimensional Hawking-Page transition

We construct a phenomenological conformal field theory (CFT) model of the three-dimensional Hawking-Page transition. We find that free fermion CFT models on the boundary torus give a description of the three-dimensional Hawking-Page transition. If modular invariance is respected, the free fermion model implies that the transition occurs continuously through the conical space phase and the small black hole phase. On the other hand, if we are allowed to break modular invariance, we can construct a free fermion model that reproduces the usual Euclidean semi-classical result, and in particular exhibits a first-order phase transition.

Quasinormal Ringing for Acoustic Black Holes at Low Temperature

We investigate a condensed matter ``black hole'' analogue, taking the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation as a starting point. The linearized GP equation corresponds to a wave equation on a black hole background, giving quasinormal modes under some appropriate conditions. We suggest that we can know the detailed characters and corresponding geometrical information about the acoustic black hole by observing quasinormal ringdown waves in the low temperature condensed matters.

Thermodynamics of four-dimensional black objects in the warped compactification

We reinvestigate the thermodynamics of black objects (holes and strings) in four-dimensional braneworld models that are originally constructed by Emparan, Horowitz and Myers based on the anti-de Sitter (AdS) C-metric. After proving the uniqueness of slicing the AdS C-metric, we derive thermodynamic quantities of the black objects by means of the Euclidean formulation and find that we have no necessity of requiring any regularization to calculate their classical action. We show that there exist the Bekenstein-Hawking law and the thermodynamic first law. The thermodynamic mass of the localized black hole on a flat brane is negative, and it differs from the one previously derived. We discuss the thermodynamic stabilities and show that the BTZ black string is more stable than the localized black holes in a canonical ensemble, except for an extreme case. We also find a braneworld analogue of the Hawking-Page transition between the BTZ black string and thermal AdS branes. The localized black holes on a de Sitter brane is discussed by considering Nariai instanton, comparing the study of "black cigar" in the five-dimensional braneworld model.

Quasi-normal modes of D3-brane Black Holes

We investigate a method to evaluate quasi-normal modes of D3-brane black holes by wave interpretation of fields on D3-brane based on the Feynman's space-time approach. We perturbatively solve the wave equation which describes propagation of a dilaton wave in a bulk space and its interaction with the D3-brane. The obtained condition for the quasi-normal modes are qualitatively equivalent to that evaluated in the usual scattering of the dilaton in the black 3-brane spacetime in the corresponding supergravity description.
