Comments on Holographic Entanglement Entropy in TT Deformed CFTs

The Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula has been a key ingredient in our understanding of holography. Recent work on TT deformations has also boosted our understanding of holography away from the conformal boundary of AdS. In this short note, we aim to refine some recent work demonstrating the success of the RT formula in TT deformed theories. We emphasize general arguments that justify the use of the RT formula in general holographic theories that obey a GKPW-like dictionary. In doing so, we clarify subtleties related to holographic counterterms and discuss the implications for holography in general spacetimes.

Reanalyzing an Evaporating Black Hole

A coherent picture of the quantum mechanics of a collapse-formed, evaporating black hole is presented. In a distant frame, semiclassical theory in the zone describes microscopic dynamics of only the "hard modes," the modes that are hard enough to be discriminated in the timescale of Hawking emission. The thermal nature of these modes arises from microcanonical typicality of the full black hole degrees of freedom, mostly composed of the "soft modes," the modes that cannot be discriminated at the semiclassical level. The hard modes are purified by a combined system of the soft modes and early Hawking radiation, but not by either of them separately. This intrinsically tripartite structure of entanglement is general, regardless of the age of the black hole. The interior spacetime emerges only at a coarse-grained level. To describe it, an effective theory can be erected at each time, which applies only to a limited spacetime region determined by the time at which the theory is erected. The entire interior of the black hole can be described only using multiple effective theories erected at different times, realizing the idea of complementarity. We analyze implications of the entanglement structure described here for various phenomena, including Hawking evaporation and general information retrieval. For multiple entangled black holes, it implies that semiclassical objects dropped into different black holes cannot meet in the interior, although each object smoothly enters the horizon of the black hole to which it is falling. We also discuss physics in Rindler space, elucidating how it is obtained as a smooth limit of the black hole physics.

Outer Entropy and Quasilocal Energy

We define the coarse-grained entropy of a `normal' surface $σ$, i.e., a surface that is neither trapped nor antitrapped. Following Engelhardt and Wall, the entropy is defined in terms of the area of an auxiliary extremal surface. This area is maximized over all auxiliary geometries that can be constructed in the interior of $σ$, while holding fixed the spatial exterior (the outer wedge). We argue that the area is maximized when the stress tensor in the auxiliary geometry vanishes, and we develop a formalism for computing it under this assumption. The coarse-grained entropy can be interpreted as a quasilocal energy of $σ$. This energy possesses desirable properties such as positivity and monotonicity, which derive directly from its information-theoretic definition.

Area Law Unification and the Holographic Event Horizon

We prove a new, large family of area laws in general relativity, which apply to certain classes of untrapped surfaces that we dub generalized holographic screens. Our family of area laws contains, as special cases, the area laws for marginally-trapped surfaces (holographic screens) and the event horizon (Hawking's area theorem). In addition to these results in general relativity, we show that in the context of holography the geometry of a generalized holographic screen is related to the outer entropy of the screen. Specifically, we show for spherically-symmetric spacetimes that the area of the largest HRT surface consistent with the outer wedge can be computed in terms of the geometry of the general (not necessarily marginally-trapped) codimension-two surface defining the wedge. This outer entropy satisfies a second law of thermodynamics, growing monotonically along the generalized holographic screen. In particular, this result provides the holographic dual for the geometry of the event horizon for spherically-symmetric spacetimes.

Classical Spacetimes as Amplified Information in Holographic Quantum Theories

We argue that classical spacetimes represent amplified information in the holographic theory of quantum gravity. In general, classicalization of a quantum system involves amplification of information at the cost of exponentially reducing the number of observables. In quantum gravity, the geometry of spacetime must be the analogously amplified information. Bulk local semiclassical operators probe this information without disturbing it; these correspond to logical operators acting on code subspaces of the holographic theory. From this viewpoint, we study how bulk local operators may be realized in a holographic theory of general spacetimes, which includes AdS/CFT as a special case, and deduce its consequences. In the first half of the paper, we ask what description of the bulk physics is provided by a holographic state dual to a semiclassical spacetime. In particular, we analyze what portion of the bulk can be reconstructed as spacetime in the holographic theory. The analysis indicates that when a spacetime contains a quasi-static black hole inside a holographic screen, the theory provides a description of physics as viewed from the exterior (though the interior information is not absent). In the second half, we study how and when a semiclassical description emerges in the holographic theory. We find that states representing semiclassical spacetimes are non-generic in the holographic Hilbert space. If there are a maximal number of independent microstates, semiclassical operators must be given state-dependently; we elucidate this point using the stabilizer formalism and tensor network models. We also discuss possible implications of the present picture for the black hole interior.

Spacetime from Unentanglement

The past decade has seen a tremendous effort toward unraveling the relationship between entanglement and emergent spacetime. These investigations have revealed that entanglement between holographic degrees of freedom is crucial for the existence of bulk spacetime. We examine this connection from the other end of the entanglement spectrum and clarify the assertion that maximally entangled states have no reconstructable spacetime. To do so, we first define the conditions for bulk reconstructability. Under these terms, we scrutinize two cases of maximally entangled holographic states. One is the familiar example of AdS black holes; these are dual to thermal states of the boundary CFT. Sending the temperature to the cutoff scale makes the state maximally entangled and the respective black hole consumes the spacetime. We then examine the de Sitter limit of FRW spacetimes. This limit is maximally entangled if one formulates the boundary theory on the holographic screen. Paralleling the AdS black hole, we find the resulting reconstructable region of spacetime vanishes. Motivated by these results, we prove a theorem showing that maximally entangled states have no reconstructable spacetime. Evidently, the emergence of spacetime is endemic to intermediate entanglement. By studying the manner in which intermediate entanglement is achieved, we uncover important properties about the boundary theory of FRW spacetimes. With this clarified understanding, our final discussion elucidates the natural way in which holographic Hilbert spaces may house states dual to different geometries. This paper provides a coherent picture clarifying the link between spacetime and entanglement and develops many promising avenues of further work.

Tensor Modes in Pure Natural Inflation

We study tensor modes in pure natural inflation (arXiv:1706.08522), a recently-proposed inflationary model in which an axionic inflaton couples to pure Yang-Mills gauge fields. We find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio r is naturally bounded from below. This bound originates from the finiteness of the number of metastable branches of vacua in pure Yang-Mills theories. Details of the model can be probed by future cosmic microwave background experiments and improved lattice gauge theory calculations of the theta-angle dependence of the vacuum energy.

Pure Natural Inflation

We point out that a simple inflationary model in which the axionic inflaton couples to a pure Yang-Mills theory may give the scalar spectral index (n_s) and tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) in complete agreement with the current observational data.

Butterfly Velocities for Holographic Theories of General Spacetimes

The butterfly velocity characterizes the spread of correlations in a quantum system. Recent work has provided a method of calculating the butterfly velocity of a class of boundary operators using holographic duality. Utilizing this and a presumed extension of the canonical holographic correspondence of AdS/CFT, we investigate the butterfly velocities of operators with bulk duals living in general spacetimes. We analyze some ubiquitous issues in calculating butterfly velocities using the bulk effective theory, and then extend the previously proposed method to include operators in entanglement shadows. We explicitly compute butterfly velocities for bulk local operators in the holographic theory of flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes and find a universal scaling behavior for the spread of operators in the boundary theory, independent of dimension and fluid components. This result may suggest that a Lifshitz field theory with z = 4 is the appropriate holographic dual for these spacetimes.

Toward a Holographic Theory for General Spacetimes

We study a holographic theory of general spacetimes that does not rely on the existence of asymptotic regions. This theory is to be formulated in a holographic space. When a semiclassical description is applicable, the holographic space is assumed to be a holographic screen: a codimension-1 surface that is capable of encoding states of the gravitational spacetime. Our analysis is guided by conjectured relationships between gravitational spacetime and quantum entanglement in the holographic description. To understand basic features of this picture, we catalog predictions for the holographic entanglement structure of cosmological spacetimes. We find that qualitative features of holographic entanglement entropies for such spacetimes differ from those in AdS/CFT but that the former reduce to the latter in the appropriate limit. The Hilbert space of the theory is analyzed, and two plausible structures are found: a direct sum and "spacetime equals entanglement" structure. The former preserves a naive relationship between linear operators and observable quantities, while the latter respects a more direct connection between holographic entanglement and spacetime. We also discuss the issue of selecting a state in quantum gravity, in particular how the state of the multiverse may be selected in the landscape.

Chiral Dark Sector

We present a simple and natural dark sector model in which dark matter particles arise as composite states of hidden strong dynamics and their stability is ensured by accidental symmetries. The model has only a few free parameters. In particular, the gauge symmetry of the model forbids the masses of dark quarks, and the confinement scale of the dynamics provides the unique mass scale of the model. The gauge group contains an Abelian symmetry $U(1)_D$, which couples the dark and standard model sectors through kinetic mixing. This model, despite its simple structure, has rich and distinctive phenomenology. In the case where the dark pion becomes massive due to $U(1)_D$ quantum corrections, direct and indirect detection experiments can probe thermal relic dark matter which is generically a mixture of the dark pion and the dark baryon, and the Large Hadron Collider can discover the $U(1)_D$ gauge boson. Alternatively, if the dark pion stays light due to a specific $U(1)_D$ charge assignment of the dark quarks, then the dark pion constitutes dark radiation. The signal of this radiation is highly correlated with that of dark baryons in dark matter direct detection.

Spacetime Equals Entanglement

We study the Hilbert space structure of classical spacetimes under the assumption that entanglement in holographic theories determines semiclassical geometry. We show that this simple assumption has profound implications; for example, a superposition of classical spacetimes may lead to another classical spacetime. Despite its unconventional nature, this picture admits the standard interpretation of superpositions of well-defined semiclassical spacetimes in the limit that the number of holographic degrees of freedom becomes large. We illustrate these ideas using a model for the holographic theory of cosmological spacetimes.

Light Chiral Dark Sector

An interesting possibility for dark matter is a scalar particle of mass of order 10 MeV-1 GeV, interacting with a U(1) gauge boson (dark photon) which mixes with the photon. We present a simple and natural model realizing this possibility. The dark matter arises as a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (dark pion) in a non-Abelian gauge sector, which also gives a mass to the dark photon. For a fixed non-Abelian gauge group, SU(N), and a U(1) charge of the constituent dark quarks, the model has only three free parameters: the dynamical scale of the non-Abelian gauge theory, the gauge coupling of the dark photon, and the mixing parameter between the dark and standard model photons. In particular, the gauge symmetry of the model does not allow any mass term for the dark quarks, and stability of the dark pion is understood as a result of an accidental global symmetry. The model has a significant parameter space in which thermal relic dark pions comprise all of the dark matter, consistently with all experimental and cosmological constraints. In a corner of the parameter space, the discrepancy of the muon g-2 between experiments and the standard model prediction can also be ameliorated due to a loop contribution of the dark photon. Smoking-gun signatures of the model include a monophoton signal from the e+ e- collision into a photon and a "dark rho meson." Observation of two processes in e+ e- collision, the mode into the dark photon and that into the dark rho meson, would provide strong evidence for the model.

Why Firewalls Need Not Exist

The firewall paradox for black holes is often viewed as indicating a conflict between unitarity and the equivalence principle. We elucidate how the paradox manifests as a limitation of semiclassical theory, rather than presents a conflict between fundamental principles. Two principal features of the fundamental and semiclassical theories address two versions of the paradox: the entanglement and typicality arguments. First, the physical Hilbert space describing excitations on a fixed black hole background in the semiclassical theory is exponentially smaller than the number of physical states in the fundamental theory of quantum gravity. Second, in addition to the Hilbert space for physical excitations, the semiclassical theory possesses an unphysically large Fock space built by creation and annihilation operators on the fixed black hole background. Understanding these features not only eliminates the necessity of firewalls but also leads to a new picture of Hawking emission contrasting pair creation at the horizon.

Hidden Pion Varieties in Composite Models for Diphoton Resonances

The diphoton excesses at 750 GeV seen in the LHC data may be the first hint for new physics at the TeV scale. We discuss variations of the model considered earlier, in which one or more diphoton excesses arise from composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (hidden pions) associated with new strong dynamics at the TeV scale. We study the case in which the 750 GeV excess arises from a unique hidden pion leading to a diphoton final state as well as the case in which it arises from one of the hidden pions decaying into diphotons. We consider SU(N), SO(N), and Sp(N) gauge groups for the strong dynamics and find that SO(N) and Sp(N) models give extra hidden pions beyond those in the SU(N) models, which can be used to discriminate among models.

750 GeV Diphotons: Implications for Supersymmetric Unification II

Perturbative supersymmetric gauge coupling unification is possible in six theories where complete SU(5) TeV-scale multiplets of vector matter account for the size of the reported $750~{\rm GeV}$ diphoton resonance, interpreted as a singlet multiplet $S = (s+ia)/\sqrt{2}$. One of these has a full generation of vector matter and a unified gauge coupling $α_G \sim 1$. The diphoton signal rate is enhanced by loops of vector squarks and sleptons, especially when the trilinear $A$ couplings are large. If the $SH_u H_d$ coupling is absent, both $s$ and $a$ can contribute to the resonance, which may then have a large apparent width if the mass splitting from $s$ and $a$ arises from loops of vector matter. The width depends sensitively on $A$ parameters and phases of the vector squark and slepton masses. Vector quarks and/or squarks are expected to be in reach of the LHC. If the $SH_uH_d$ coupling is present, $a$ leads to a narrow diphoton resonance, while a second resonance with decays $s \rightarrow hh, W^+ W^-,ZZ$ is likely to be discovered at future LHC runs. In some of the theories a non-standard origin or running of the soft parameters is required, for example involving conformal hidden sector interactions.

A Composite Model for the 750 GeV Diphoton Excess

We study a simple model in which the recently reported 750 GeV diphoton excess arises from a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson---hidden pion---produced by gluon fusion and decaying into two photons. The model only introduces an extra hidden gauge group at the TeV scale with a vectorlike quark in the bifundamental representation of the hidden and standard model gauge groups. We calculate the masses of all the hidden pions and analyze their experimental signatures and constraints. We find that two colored hidden pions must be near the current experimental limits, and hence are probed in the near future. We study physics of would-be stable particles---the composite states that do not decay purely by the hidden and standard model gauge dynamics---in detail, including constraints from cosmology. We discuss possible theoretical structures above the TeV scale, e.g. conformal dynamics and supersymmetry, and their phenomenological implications. We also discuss an extension of the minimal model in which there is an extra hidden quark that is singlet under the standard model and has a mass smaller than the hidden dynamical scale. This provides two standard model singlet hidden pions that can both be viewed as diphoton/diboson resonances produced by gluon fusion. We discuss several scenarios in which these (and other) resonances can be used to explain various excesses seen in the LHC data.
