Constrained Standard Model from Extra Dimension

A five dimensional supersymmetric model is constructed which reduces to the one Higgs-doublet standard model at low energies. The radiative correction to the Higgs potential is finite and calculable, allowing the Higgs mass prediction of 127 \pm 8 GeV. The physical reasons for this finiteness are discussed in detail. The masses of the superparticles and the Kaluza-Klein excitations are also predicted. The lightest superparticle is a top squark of mass 197 \pm 20 GeV.

Finite Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from the Bulk

A new physical origin for electroweak symmetry breaking is proposed, involving compact spatial dimensions of scale 1/R \approx 1 TeV. The higher dimensional theory is supersymmetric, and hence requires the top-quark Yukawa coupling to be localized on some ``Yukawa brane'' in the bulk. The short distance divergence in the Higgs-boson mass is regulated because supersymmetry is unbroken in the vicinity of this Yukawa brane. A finite, negative Higgs mass-squared is generated radiatively by the top-quark supermultiplet propagating a distance of order R from the Yukawa brane to probe supersymmetry breaking. The physics of electroweak symmetry breaking is therefore closely related to this top propagation across the bulk, and is dominated by the mass scale 1/R, with exponential insensitivity to higher energy scales. The masses of the superpartners and the Kaluza-Klein resonances are also set by the mass scale 1/R, which is naturally larger than the W boson mass by a loop factor. Explicit models are constructed which are highly constrained and predictive. The finite radiative correction to the Higgs mass is computed, and the Higgs sector briefly explored. The superpartner and Kaluza-Klein resonance spectra are calculated, and the problem of flavor violation from squark and slepton exchange is solved. Important collider signatures include highly ionizing charged tracks from stable top squarks, and events with two Higgs bosons and missing transverse energy.

GUT Breaking on the Brane

We present a five-dimensional supersymmetric SU(5) theory in which the gauge symmetry is broken maximally (i.e. at the 5D Planck scale M_*) on the same 4D brane where chiral matter is localized. Masses of the lightest Kaluza-Klein modes for the colored Higgs and X and Y gauge fields are determined by the compactification scale of the fifth dimension, M_C ~ 10^{15} GeV, rather than by M_*. These fields' wave functions are repelled from the GUT-breaking brane, so that proton decay rates are suppressed below experimental limits. Above the compactification scale, the differences between the standard model gauge couplings evolve logarithmically, so that ordinary logarithmic gauge coupling unification is preserved. The maximal breaking of the grand unified group can also lead to other effects, such as O(1) deviations from SU(5) predictions of Yukawa couplings, even in models utilizing the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism.

Viable Ultraviolet-Insensitive Supersymmetry Breaking

It is known that one can add D-term contributions for U(1)_Y and U(1)_{B-L} to the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking to make the superparticle spectrum phenomenologically viable. We point out that this can be done without spoiling its important virtue, namely the ultraviolet insensitivity. This framework can be derived from supersymmetry breaking and U(1)_{B-L} breaking on hidden brane(s).

A Constrained Standard Model from a Compact Extra Dimension

A SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) supersymmetric theory is constructed with a TeV sized extra dimension compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 \times Z_2'). The compactification breaks supersymmetry leaving a set of zero modes which correspond precisely to the states of the 1 Higgs doublet standard model. Supersymmetric Yukawa interactions are localized at orbifold fixed points. The top quark hypermultiplet radiatively triggers electroweak symmetry breaking, yielding a Higgs potential which is finite and exponentially insensitive to physics above the compactification scale. This potential depends on only a single free parameter, the compactification scale, yielding a Higgs mass prediction of 127 \pm 8 GeV. The masses of the all superpartners, and the Kaluza-Klein excitations are also predicted. The lightest supersymmetric particle is a top squark of mass 197 \pm 20 GeV. The top Kaluza-Klein tower leads to the ρparameter having quadratic sensitivity to unknown physics in the ultraviolet.

Bulk U(1) Messenger

We propose a new U(1) gauge interaction in the bulk in higher dimensional spacetime, which transmits supersymmetry-breaking effects on the hidden brane to the observable our brane. We find that rather small gauge coupling constant of U(1)_{bulk}, $α_{bulk} \simeq 5 \times 10^{-4}$, is required for a successful phenomenology. This result implies the compactification length $L$ of the extra dimension to be $L^{-1} \simeq 2 \times 10^{15}GeV$ for (4+1)-dimensional spacetime. This large compactification length $L$ is a crucial ingredient to suppress unwanted flavor-changing neutral currents and hence our proposal is very consistent with the Randall-Sundrum brane-world scenario.

Quintessence Axion Potential Induced by Electroweak Instanton Effects

Recent cosmological observations suggest the presence of small but nonzero cosmological constant $Λ_{cos}^4 \simeq (2 \times 10^{-3} eV)^4$. It is an intriguing possibility that such a small cosmological constant is supplied by the potential energy density of an ultralight axion-like field (called as quintessence axion). If this axion couples to the electroweak gauge fields, its potential may be generated by the electroweak instanton effects. We calculate the axion potential assuming the supersymmetric standard model and obtain a surprising result that the induced energy density of the quintessence axion field is very close to the value suggested from the observations.

Natural Effective Supersymmetry

Much heavier sfermions of the first-two generations than the other superparticles provide a natural explanation for the flavor and CP problems in the supersymmetric standard model (SUSY SM). However, the heavy sfermions may drive the mass squareds for the light third generation sfermions to be negative through two-loop renormalization group (RG) equations, breaking color and charge. Introducing extra matters to the SUSY SM, it is possible to construct models where the sfermion masses are RG invariant at the two-loop level in the limit of vanishing gaugino-mass and Yukawa-coupling contributions. We calculate the finite corrections to the light sfermion masses at the two-loop level in the models. We find that the finite corrections to the light-squark mass squareds are negative and can be less than (0.3-1)% of the heavy-squark mass squareds, depending on the number and the parameters of the extra matters. We also discuss whether such models realized by the U(1)_X gauge interaction at the GUT scale can satisfy the constraints from Δm_K and ε_K naturally. When both the left- and right-handed down-type squarks of the first-two generations have common U(1)_X charges, the supersymmetric contributions to Δm_K and ε_K are sufficiently suppressed without spoiling naturalness, even if the flavor-violating supergravity contributions to the sfermion mass matrices are included. When only the right-handed squarks of the first-two generations have a common U(1)_X charge, we can still satisfy the constraint from Δm_K naturally, but evading the bound from ε_K requires the CP phase smaller than 10^{-2}.

Quark and Lepton Mass Matrices in the SO(10) Grand Unified Theory with Generation Flipping

We investigate the SO(10) grand unified model with generation flipping. The model contains one extra matter multiplet $ψ(10)$ and it mixes with the usual matter multiplets $ψ_i(16)$ when the SO(10) is broken down to SU(5). We find the parameter region of the model in which the observed quark masses and mixings are well reproduced. The resulting parameter region is consistent with the observation that only $ψ_i(16)$ have a source of hierarchies and indicates that the mixing between second and third generations tends to be large in the lepton sector, which is consistent with the observed maximal mixing of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation. We also show that the model can accommodate MSW and vacuum oscillation solutions to the solar neutrino deficit depending on the form of the Majorana mass matrix for the right-handed neutrinos.

Mass Generation for an Ultralight Axion

If a global chiral symmetry is explicitly broken by anomalies in nonabelian gauge theories, a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (axion) associated with a spontaneous breakdown of such a global symmetry acquires a mass through nonperturbative instanton effects. We calculate the axion mass assuming a supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory and show that the axion obtains an extremely small mass when the SU(2) gauge symmetry is broken down at very high energy, say at the Planck scale. We identify the axion with a hypothetical ultralight boson field proposed to account for a small but nonzero cosmological constant suggested from recent cosmological observations.

Grand-Unification Scale Generation through the Anomalous U(1) Breaking

We discuss the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry as a mechanism of generating the grand-unification scale. We conclude that unification to a simple group cannot be realized unless some parameters are ``tuned'', and that models with product gauge groups are preferred. We consider the ``R-invariant natural unification'' model with gauge groups SU(5)_{GUT} \times U(3)_H. In this model the doublet-triplet splitting problem is solved and the unwanted GUT relation m_s = m_μis avoided maintaining m_b = m_τ. Moreover, R-invariance suppresses the dangerous proton decays induced by dimension four and five operators.

Decoupling Solution to the Supersymmetric Flavor Problem without Color Instability

The supersymmetric flavor problem is elegantly solved by the decoupling scenario, where the first-two generation sfermions are much heavier than the third generation ones. However, such a mass spectrum is not stable against renormalization group evolution and causes extreme fine-tuning of the electroweak symmetry breaking. We present a mechanism which stabilizes the mass spectrum with such a large splitting, by introducing extra vector-like chiral multiplets of masses comparable to the first-two generation sfermions. The explicit models are constructed in a framework of the anomalous U(1) SUSY-breaking model.

Long-Lived Superheavy Particles in Dynamical Supersymmetry-Breaking Models in Supergravity

Superheavy particles of masses $\simeq 10^{13}-10^{14} GeV$ with lifetimes $\simeq 10^{10}-10^{22} years$ are very interesting, since their decays may account for the ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays discovered beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cut-off energy $E \sim 5 \times 10^{10} GeV$. We show that the presence of such long-lived superheavy particles is a generic prediction of QCD-like SU(N_c) gauge theories with N_f flavors of quarks and antiquarks and the large number of colors N_c. We construct explicit models based on supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theories and show that if the dynamical scale $Λ\simeq 10^{13}-10^{14} GeV$ and N_c = 6-10 the lightest composite baryons have the desired masses and lifetimes to explain the UHE cosmic rays. Interesting is that in these models the gaugino condensation necessarily occurs and hence these models may play a role of so-called hidden sector for supersymmetry breaking in supergravity.

Cosmological Constants as Messenger between Branes

We present a supersymmetry-breaking scenario in which both the breaking in the hidden sector with no-scale type supergravity and that in the observable sector with gauge mediation are taken into account. The breaking scales in the hidden and observable sectors are related through the vanishing condition of the cosmological constant with a brane-world picture in mind. Suppressing flavor-changing neutral currents, we can naturally obtain the gravitino, Higgs(ino), and soft masses of the electroweak scale.

A Relation on Gaugino Masses in a Supersymmetric SO(10)_GUT x SO(6)_H Unified Model

The doublet-triplet splitting problem in supersymmetric grand unified theories is elegantly solved in a supersymmetric SO(10)_GUT x SO(6)_H model. In this model, the gauginos in the supersymmetric standard model do not respect the usual GUT gaugino mass relation. We point out that in spite of non-unified gaugino masses there is one nontrivial relation among gaugino masses in the model. Thus, it can be used to test the model in future experiments.

A Gauge-Mediation Model of Dynamical SUSY Breaking with a Wide Range of the Gravitino Mass

We provide a gauge-mediation model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking where the gravitino mass takes a value in a wide range from 0.1 eV to 10 GeV. The lower mass region of order 100 keV or less deserves experimental and cosmological interests. The vacuum of our model is a true one without runaway instability, which may be desirable in a cosmological evolution of the universe.

Long Lived Superheavy Dark Matter with Discrete Gauge Symmetries

The recently observed ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin bound can be explained by the decays of some superheavy $X$ particles forming a part of dark matter in our universe. We consider various discrete gauge symmetries ${\bf Z}_N$ to ensure the required long lifetime ($τ_X \simeq 10^{10}-10^{22} years$) of the $X$ particle to explain the UHE cosmic rays in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with massive Majorana neutrinos. We show that there is no anomaly-free discrete gauge symmetry to make the lifetime of the $X$ particle sufficiently long in the MSSM with the $X$ particle. We find, however, possible solutions to this problem especially by enlarging the particle contents in the MSSM. We show a number of solutions introducing an extra pair of singlets $Y$ and $\bar{Y}$ which have fractional ${\bf Z}_N$ (N=2,3) charges. The present experimental constraints on the $X$ particle are briefly discussed.

Large Squark and Slepton Masses for the First-Two Generations in the Anomalous U(1) SUSY Breaking Models

Considering that the soft SUSY breaking scalar masses come from a vacuum expectation value of the D-term for an external gauge multiplet, the renormalization of the scalar masses is related to the gauge anomaly. Then, if the external gauge symmetry is anomaly-free and has no kinetic mixing with the other U(1) gauge symmetries, the scalar masses are non-renormalized at all orders assuming that the gaugino masses are negligibly small compared with the scalar masses. Motivated by this, we construct models where the sfermion masses for the first-two generations are much heavier than the other superparticles in the minimal SUSY standard model in a framework of the anomalous U(1) mediated SUSY breaking. In these models we have to introduce extra chiral multiplets with the masses as large as those for the first-two generation sfermions. We find that phenomenologically desirable patterns for the soft SUSY breaking terms can be obtained in the models.
