Photo-induced phase transition on black samarium monosulfide

To investigate the role of the excitons for the origin of the pressure-induced phase transition (BGT) from the black-colored insulator (BI) to the golden-yellow-colored metal (GM) of samarium monosulfide (SmS), optical reflectivity, Sm $3d$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) with the creation of excitons by photoexcitation (PE) are reported. In the pump-probe reflectivity measurement, following a huge reflectivity change of about 22 %, three different relaxation times with a vibration component were observed. The fast component with the relaxation time ($τ$) of less than 1 ps is due to the excitation and relaxation of electrons into the conduction band, and the slowest one with $τ> {\rm several} 100$ ps originates from the appearance of the photo-induced (PI) state. The components with $τ\sim 10$ ps and vibration originate from the appearance of the PI state and the interference between the reflection lights at the sample surface and the boundary between the BI and PI states, suggesting that the electronic structure of the PI phase is different from that of the BI state. XAS spectra indicate that the Sm mean valence is shifted from the Sm$^{2+}$ dominant to the intermediate between Sm$^{2+}$ and Sm$^{3+}$ by PE but did not change to that of the GM phase across BGT, consistent with the reflectivity data. The XRD result after PE shows that the PI state has much less lattice contraction than the GM phase. These results suggest that the BGT cannot be achieved solely by creating excitons after PE but requires other effects, such as a lattice contraction.

Photocarrier Transport of Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Thin Films Detected by the Magnetic Dynamics of Adjacent Ferromagnetic Layers

We have observed photocarrier transport behaviors in BiFeO$_3$/La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$~(BFO/LSMO) heterostructures by using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in reflectivity. The magnetization of LSMO layers was used as a probe of photo-induced carrier dynamics in the photovoltaic BFO layers. During the photo-induced demagnetization process, the decay time of LSMO~($x$=0.2) magnetization strongly depends on the ferroelectric polarization direction of the BFO layer. The variation of decay time should be attributed to the different sign of accumulated photocarriers at the BFO/LSMO interface induced by the photovoltaic effect of the BFO layer. The photocarriers can reach the BFO/LSMO interface and influence the magnetization distribution in the LSMO layers within the timescale of $\sim$100~ps. Our results provide a novel strategy to investigate carrier dynamics and mechanisms of optical control of magnetization in thin film heterostructures.

Photo-induced Antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic Transition and Electronic Structure Modulation in GdBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ Thin Film

We investigate both the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ultrafast dynamics of a strongly correlated oxide system, GdBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ thin film, by time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in reflectivity (XMCDR) and resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction (RMXD). A photo-induced AFM-FM transition characterized by an increase of the transient XMCDR beyond the unpumped value and a decay of RMXD was observed. The photon-energy dependence of the transient XMCDR and reflectivity can likely be interpreted as a concomitant photo-induced spinstate transition.

Polarization-Resolved Extreme Ultraviolet Second Harmonic Generation from LiNbO$_3$

Second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy ubiquitously enables the investigation of surface chemistry, interfacial chemistry as well as symmetry properties in solids. Polarization-resolved SHG spectroscopy in the visible to infrared regime is regularly used to investigate electronic and magnetic orders through their angular anisotropies within the crystal structure. However, the increasing complexity of novel materials and emerging phenomena hamper the interpretation of experiments solely based on the investigation of hybridized valence states. Here, polarization-resolved SHG in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV-SHG) is demonstrated for the first time, enabling element-resolved angular anisotropy investigations. In non-centrosymmetric LiNbO$_3$, elemental contributions by lithium and niobium are clearly distinguished by energy dependent XUV-SHG measurements. This element-resolved and symmetry-sensitive experiment suggests that the displacement of Li ions in LiNbO$_3$, which is known to lead to ferroelectricity, is accompanied by distortions to the Nb ion environment that breaks the inversion symmetry of the NbO$_{6}$ octahedron as well. Our simulations show that the measured second harmonic spectrum is consistent with Li ion displacements from the centrosymmetric position by $\sim$0.5 Angstrom while the Nb-O bonds are elongated/contracted by displacements of the O atoms by $\sim$0.1 Angstrom. In addition, the polarization-resolved measurement of XUV-SHG shows excellent agreement with numerical predictions based on dipole-induced SHG commonly used in the optical wavelengths. This constitutes the first verification of the dipole-based SHG model in the XUV regime. The findings of this work pave the way for future angle and time-resolved XUV-SHG studies with elemental specificity in condensed matter systems.

A novel measurement approach for near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure: continuous 2$π$ angular rotation of linear polarization

A new technical method is developed for soft x-ray spectroscopy of near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The measurement is performed with continuously rotating linearly polarized light over 2$π$, generated by a segmented undulator. A demonstration of the rotational NEXAFS experiment was successfully made with a 2D film, showing detailed polarization-dependence in intensity of the molecular orbitals. The present approach provides varieties of technical opportunities that are compatible with the state-of-the-art experiments in nano-space and under the $operando$ condition.

Direct observation of symmetry-breaking in a 'ferroelectric' polar metal

Ferroelectric materials contain a switchable spontaneous polarization that persists even in the absence of an external electric field. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and metallicity in a material appears to be illusive, since polarization is ill-defined in metals, where the itinerant electrons are expected to screen the long-range dipole interactions necessary for dipole ordering. The surprising discovery of the polar metal, LiOsO3 has generated interest in searching for new polar metals motivated by the prospects of exotic quantum phenomena such as unconventional pairing mechanisms giving rise to superconductivity, topological spin currents, anisotropic upper critical fields, and Mott multiferroics. Previous studies have suggested that the coordination preferences of the Li atom play a key role in stabilizing the polar metal phase of LiOsO3, but a thorough understanding of how polar order and metallicity can coexist remains elusive. Here, we use XUV-SHG as novel technique to directly probe the broken inversion-symmetry around the Li atom. Our results agree with previous theories that the primary structural distortion that gives rise to the polar metal phase in LiOsO3 is a consequence of a sub-Angstrom Li atom displacement along the polar axis. A remarkable agreement between our experimental results and ab initio calculations provide physical insights for connecting the nonlinear response to unit-cell spatial asymmetries. It is shown that XUV-SHG can selectively probe inversion-breaking symmetry in a bulk material with elemental specificity. Compared to optical SHG methods, XUV-SHG fills a key gap for studying structural asymmetries when the structural distortion is energetically separated from the Fermi surface. Further, these results pave the way for time-resolved probing of symmetry-breaking structural phase transitions on femtosecond timescales with element specificity.

Localized character of charge excitations for La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4+δ}$ revealed by oxygen $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

We performed a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4+δ}$ (LSNO) at the oxygen $K$ edge to investigate the nature of the doped holes with regard to charge excitations. Charge excitations of the hole-doped nickelates are found to be almost independent of momentum transfer, indicating that the doped holes are strongly localized in character. Additionally, conspicuous changes in energy position are in temperature dependence. These characters are observed in stark contrast to those of the high-$T_{c}$ cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO), where delocalized doped holes form charge excitations with sizable momentum dependence in the CuO$_2$ plane. This distinct nature of charge excitations of doped holes is consistent with the metallicity of the materials and could be caused by strong electron-phonon coupling and weak quantum spin fluctuation in the nickelates.

A $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospinon continuum in CaIrO$_3$

In so-called $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ systems, including some iridates and ruthenates, the coherent superposition of $t_\mathrm{2g}$ orbitals in the ground state gives rise to hopping processes that strongly depend on the bond geometry. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on CaIrO$_3$ reveal a prototypical $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospinon continuum, a hallmark of one-dimensional (1D) magnetic systems despite its three-dimensional crystal structure. The experimental spectra compare very well to the calculated magnetic dynamical structure factor of weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains. We attribute the onset of such quasi-1D magnetism to the fundamental difference in the magnetic interactions between the $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospins along the corner- and edge-sharing bonds in CaIrO$_3$.

Spin-orbital liquid in Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ stabilized by oxygen holes

Both the Jahn-Teller distortion of Cu$^{2+}$O$_6$ octahedra and magnetic ordering are absent in hexagonal Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ suggesting a Cu 3$d$ spin-orbital liquid state. Here, by means of resonant x-ray scattering and absorption experiment, we show that oxygen 2$p$ holes play crucial role in stabilizing this spin-orbital liquid state. These oxygen holes appear due to the "reaction" Sb$^{5+}$$\rightarrow$Sb$^{3+}$ $+$ two oxygen holes, with these holes being able to attach to Cu ions. The hexagonal phase with oxygen 2$p$ holes exhibits also a novel charge-orbital dynamics which is absent in the orthorhombic phase of Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ with Jahn-Teller distortion and Cu 3$d$ orbital order. The present work opens up a new avenue towards spin-charge-orbital entangled liquid state in transition-metal oxides with small or negative charge transfer energy.

Interfacial-hybridization-modified Ir Ferromagnetism and Electronic Structure in LaMnO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ Superlattices

Artificially fabricated 3$d$/5$d$ superlattices (SLs) involve both strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in one material by means of interfacial 3$d$-5$d$ coupling, whose mechanism remains mostly unexplored. In this work we investigated the mechanism of interfacial coupling in LaMnO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ SLs by several spectroscopic approaches. Hard x-ray absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and photoemission spectra evidence the systematic change of the Ir ferromagnetism and the electronic structure with the change of the SL repetition period. First-principles calculations further reveal the mechanism of the SL-period dependence of the interfacial electronic structure and the local properties of the Ir moments, confirming that the formation of Ir-Mn molecular orbital is responsible for the interfacial coupling effects. The SL-period dependence of the ratio between spin and orbital components of the Ir magnetic moments can be attributed to the realignment of electron spin during the formation of the interfacial molecular orbital. Our results clarify the nature of interfacial coupling in this prototypical 3$d$/5$d$ SL system and the conclusion will shed light on the study of other strongly correlated and spin-orbit coupled oxide hetero-interfaces.

Intrinsic 2D Ferromagnetism in V5Se8 Epitaxial Thin Films

The discoveries of intrinsic ferromagnetism in atomically-thin van der Waals crystals have opened up a new research field enabling fundamental studies on magnetism at two-dimensional (2D) limit as well as development of magnetic van der Waals heterostructures. To date, a variety of 2D ferromagnetism has been explored mainly by mechanically exfoliating 'originally ferromagnetic (FM)' van der Waals crystals, while bottom-up approach by thin film growth technique has demonstrated emergent 2D ferromagnetism in a variety of 'originally non-FM' van der Waals materials. Here we demonstrate that V5Se8 epitaxial thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) exhibit emergent 2D ferromagnetism with intrinsic spin polarization of the V 3d electrons despite that the bulk counterpart is 'originally antiferromagnetic (AFM)'. Moreover, thickness-dependence measurements reveal that this newly-developed 2D ferromagnet could be classified as an itinerant 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet with weak magnetic anisotropy, broadening a lineup of 2D magnets to those potentially beneficial for future spintronics applications.

Element-selective tracking ultrafast demagnetization process in Co/Pt multilayer thin films by the resonant magneto-optical Kerr effect

We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films demonstrating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with element specificity using resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at Pt~N${}_{6,7}$ and Co~M${}_{2,3}$ edges with an x-ray free electron laser. The obtained results showed a clear element dependence of photo-induced demagnetization time scales: $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Co}=80\pm60~\textrm{fs}$ and $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Pt}=640\pm140~\textrm{fs}$. This dependence is explained by the induced moment of the Pt atom by current flow from the Co layer through the interfaces. The observed magnetization dynamics of Co and Pt can be attributed to the characteristics of photo-induced Co/Pt thin film phenomena including all-optical switching.

Nature of carrier doping in T'-La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 studied by X-Ray Photoemission and Absorption Spectroscopy

Recently, hole-doped superconducting cuprates with the T'-structure La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) have attracted a lot of attention. We have performed x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy measurements on as-grown and reduced T0-LESCO. Results show that electrons and holes were doped by reduction annealing and Sr substitution, respectively. However, it is shown that the system remains on the electron-doped side of the Mott insulator or that the charge-transfer gap is collapsed in the parent compound.

Polar State induced by Block-type Lattice Distortions in BaFe2Se3 with Quasi-One-Dimensional Ladder Structure

Temperature dependent crystal structures of the quasi-one-dimensional ladder material BaFe2Se3 are examined. Combining the optical second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments and neutron diffraction measurements, we elucidate the crystal structure with Pmn2_1 space group in the low-temperature phase below Ts2 = 400 K, further above Neel temperature. This low-temperature phase loses the spatial inversion symmetry, where a resultant macroscopic polarization emerges along the rung direction. The transition is characterized by block-type lattice distortions with the magneto-striction mechanism. Change in the electrical resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility across the polar-nonpolar transition also suggests a modification of the electronic states reflecting the structural instability. Consistency and discrepancy with the existing theory are discussed.

Ultrafast demagnetization of Pt magnetic moment in L1${}_0$-FePt probed by hard x-ray free electron laser

We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $τ_\textrm{total} = 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.

Capturing ultrafast magnetic dynamics by time-resolved soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Experiments of time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (Tr-XMCD) and resonant x-ray scattering at a beamline BL07LSU in SPring-8 with a time-resolution of under 50 ps are presented. A micro-channel plate is utilized for the Tr-XMCD measurements at nearly normal incidence both in the partial electron and total fluorescence yield (PEY and TFY) modes at the L2,3 absorption edges of the 3d transition-metals in the soft x-ray region. The ultrafast photo-induced demagnetization within 50 ps is observed on the dynamics of a magnetic material of FePt thin film, having a distinct threshold of the photon density. The spectrum in the PEY mode is less-distorted both at the L2,3 edges compared with that in the TFY mode and has the potential to apply the sum rule analysis for XMCD spectra in pump-probed experiments.

Thickness dependence and dimensionality effects of charge and magnetic orderings in La1/3Sr2/3FeO3 thin films

We investigate the thickness effects on charge and magnetic orderings in Fe perovskite oxide La1/3Sr2/3FeO3/SrTiO3 thin films by hard x-ray and resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) with changing thin film thickness systematically. We found that the correlation lengths of the magnetic ordering along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions are comparable and proportional to the thickness, and shows stronger thickness dependence than those of charge orderg. %the thickness dependence of correlation length of charge ordering is smaller than that of magnetic orderings. The magnetic ordered states disappear when the correlation length of magnetic ordering decreases to that of charge ordering through the intrinsic thickness effects. Surface sensitive grazing-incident RSXS revealed that the orderings exist even in the surface region, which indicates that the observed orderings is not affected by surface effect like oxygen vacancies. Critical thickness is in 5-15 nm, which corresponds to 4-11 antiferromagnetic ordering period. This critical value seems to be common to other ferromagnetic oxide thin films.

The magnetic precursor of the pressure-induced superconductivity in Fe-ladder compound

The pressure effects on the antiferromagentic orders in iron-based ladder compounds CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_3$ have been studied using neutron diffraction. With identical crystal structure and similar magnetic structures, the two compounds exhibit highly contrasting magnetic behaviors under moderate external pressures. In CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ the ladders are brought much closer to each other by pressure, but the stripe-type magnetic order shows no observable change. In contrast, the stripe order in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, undergoes a quantum phase transition where an abrupt increase of N$\acute{e}$el temperature by more than 50$\%$ occurs at about 1 GPa, accompanied by a jump in the ordered moment. With its spin structure unchanged, BaFe$_2$S$_3$ enters an enhanced magnetic phase that bears the characteristics of an orbital selective Mott phase, which is the true neighbor of superconductivity emerging at higher pressures.
