Determination and reconstruction of a semilinear term from point measurements

In this article we study the inverse problem of determining a semilinear term appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary measurements. Our main objective is to develop flexible and general theoretical results that can be used for developing numerical reconstruction algorithm for this inverse problem. For this purpose, we develop a new method, based on different properties of solutions of elliptic equations, for treating the determination of the semilinear term as a source term from a point measurement of the solutions. This approach not only allows us to make important relaxations on the data used so far for solving this class of inverse problems, including general Dirichlet excitation lying in a space of dimension one and measurements located at one point on the boundary of the domain, but it also allows us to derive a novel algorithm for the reconstruction of the semilinear term. The effectiveness of our algorithm is corroborated by extensive numerical experiments. Notably, as demonstrated by the theoretical analysis, we are able to effectively reconstruct the unknown nonlinear source term by utilizing solely the information provided by the measurement data at a single point.

Determination of time dependent source terms for Stokes systems in unbounded domains

This article is devoted to the analysis of inverse source problems for Stokes systems in unbounded domains where the corresponding velocity flow is observed on a surface. Our main objective is to study the unique determination of general class of time-dependent and vector-valued source terms with potentially unknown divergence. Taking into account the challenges inherent in this class of inverse source problems, we aim to identify the most precise conditions that ensure their resolution. Motivated by various fluid motion problems, we explore several class of boundary measurements. Our proofs are based on different arguments, including unique continuation properties for Stokes systems, approximate controllability, complex analysis, and the application of explicit harmonic functions and explicit solutions for Stokes systems. This analysis is complemented by a reconstruction algorithm and examples of numerical computations.

Recovery of an inclusion in Photoacoustic imaging

In photoacoustic imaging the objective is to determine the optical properties of biological tissue from boundary measurement of the generated acoustic wave. Here, we propose a restriction to piecewise constant media parameters. Precisely we assume that the acoustic speed and the optical coefficients take two different constants inside and outside a star shaped inclusion. We show that the inclusion can be uniquely recovered from a single measurement. We also derive a stability estimate of Lipschitz type of the inversion. The proof of stability is based on an integral representation and a new observability inequality for the wave equation with piecewise constant speed that is of interest itself.

Partial data inverse problems for reaction-diffusion and heat equations

We study partial data inverse problems for linear and nonlinear parabolic equations with unknown time-dependent coefficients. In particular, we prove uniqueness results for partial data inverse problems for semilinear reaction-diffusion equations where Dirichlet boundary data and Neumann measurements of solutions are restricted to any open subset of the boundary. We also prove injectivity of the Fréchet derivative of the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to heat equations. Our proof consists of two crucial ingredients; (i) we introduce an asymptotic family of spherical quasimodes that approximately solve heat equations modulo an exponentially decaying remainder term and (ii) the asymptotic study of a weighted Laplace transform of the unknown coefficient along a straight line segment in the domain where the weight may be viewed as a semiclassical symbol that itself depends on the complex-valued frequency. The latter analysis will rely on Phragmén-Lindelöf principle and Grönwall inequality.

Inverse Coefficient Problem for One-Dimensional Subdiffusion with Data on Disjoint Sets in Time

In this work we investigate an inverse coefficient problem for the one-dimensional subdiffusion model, which involves a Caputo fractional derivative in time. The inverse problem is to determine two coefficients and multiple parameters (the order, and length of the interval) from one pair of lateral Cauchy data. The lateral Cauchy data are given on disjoint sets in time with a single excitation and the measurement is made on a time sequence located outside the support of the excitation. We prove two uniqueness results for different lateral Cauchy data. The analysis is based on the solution representation, analyticity of the observation and a refined version of inverse Sturm-Liouville theory due to Sini [35]. Our results heavily exploit the memory effect of fractional diffusion for the unique recovery of the coefficients in the model. Several numerical experiments are also presented to complement the analysis.

On time-fractional partial differential equations of time-dependent piecewise constant order

This contribution considers the time-fractional subdiffusion with a time-dependent variable-order fractional operator of order $β(t)$. It is assumed that $β(t)$ is a piecewise constant function with a finite number of jumps. A proof technique based on the Fourier method and results from constant-order fractional subdiffusion equations has been designed. This novel approach results in the well-posedness of the problem.

Determination of quasilinear terms from restricted data and point measurements

We study the inverse problem of determining uniquely and stably quasilinear terms appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary excitations and measurements associated with the solutions of the corresponding equation. More precisely, we consider the determination of quasilinear terms depending simultaneously on the solution and the gradient of the solution of the elliptic equation from measurements of the flux restricted to some fixed and finite number of points located at the boundary of the domain generated by Dirichlet data lying on a finite dimensional space. Our Dirichlet data will be explicitly given by affine functions taking values in $\mathbb R$. We prove our results by considering a new approach based on explicit asymptotic properties of solutions of these class of nonlinear elliptic equations with respect to a small parameter imposed at the boundary of the domain.

Rigidity of inverse problems for nonlinear elliptic equations on manifolds

We consider the inverse problem of determining coefficients appearing in semilinear elliptic equations stated on Riemannian manifolds with boundary given the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We begin with a negative answer to this problem. Owing to this obstruction, we consider a new formulation of our inverse problem in terms of a rigidity problem. Precisely, we consider cases where the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of a semilinear equation coincides with the one of a linear equation and ask whether this implies that the equation must indeed be linear. We give a positive answer to this rigidity problem under some assumptions imposed to the Riemannian manifold and to the semilinear term under consideration.

On determining and breaking the gauge class in inverse problems for reaction-diffusion equations

We investigate an inverse boundary value problem of determination of a nonlinear law for reaction-diffusion processes, which are modeled by general form semilinear parabolic equations. We do not assume that any solutions to these equations are known a priori, in which case the problem has a well known gauge symmetry. We determine, under additional assumptions, the semilinear term up to this symmetry in a time-dependent anisotropic case modeled on Riemannian manifolds, and for partial data measurements on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Moreover, we present cases where it is possible to exploit the nonlinear interaction to break the gauge symmetry. This leads to full determination results of the nonlinear term. As an application, we show that it is possible to give a full resolution to classes of inverse source problems of determining a source term and nonlinear terms simultaneously. This is in strict contrast to inverse source problems for corresponding linear equations, which always have the gauge symmetry. We also consider a Carleman estimate with boundary terms based on intrinsic properties of parabolic equations.

Determination of the sound speed and an initial source in photoacoustic tomography

In thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography an electromagnetic wave is sent through a medium, heating it and therefore generating an elastic expansion that in turns generates an acoustic wave that is measured outside the medium. The general problem is to recover both the inhomogeneous sound speed and the initial pressure from the boundary measurements of the solution of the acoustic wave equation with a single measurement of the pressure. We show that one can recover both the sound speed and the initial pressure assuming a monocitiy condition on the sound speed that includes the physically interesting case of piecewise constant sound speeds. We also establish a link between this problem and the corresponding transmission eigenvalue problem.

Recovery of a Distributed Order Fractional Derivative in an Unknown Medium

In this work, we study an inverse problem of recovering information about the weight in distributed-order time-fractional diffusion from the observation at one single point on the domain boundary. In the absence of an explicit knowledge of the medium, we prove that the one-point observation can uniquely determine the support bound of the weight. The proof is based on asymptotics of the data, analytic continuation and Titchmarch convolution theorem. When the medium is known, we give an alternative proof of an existing result, i.e., the one-point boundary observation uniquely determines the weight. Several numerical experiments are also presented to complement the analysis.

Inverse Problems for Subdiffusion from Observation at an Unknown Terminal Time

Inverse problems of recovering space-dependent parameters, e.g., initial condition, space-dependent source or potential coefficient, in a subdiffusion model from the terminal observation have been extensively studied in recent years. However, all existing studies have assumed that the terminal time at which one takes the observation is exactly known. In this work, we present uniqueness and stability results for three canonical inverse problems, e.g., backward problem, inverse source and inverse potential problems, from the terminal observation at an unknown time. The subdiffusive nature of the problem indicates that one can simultaneously determine the terminal time and space-dependent parameter. The analysis is based on explicit solution representations, asymptotic behavior of the Mittag-Leffler function, and mild regularity conditions on the problem data. Further, we present several one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments to illustrate the feasibility of the approach.

Solving time-fractional diffusion equations with singular source term

This article deals with time-fractional diffusion equations with time-dependent singular source term. Whenever the order of the time-fractional derivative is either multi-term, distributed or space-dependent, we prove that the system admits a unique weak solution enjoying a Duhamel representation, provided that the time-dependence of the source term is a distribution.

Inverse source problem with a posteriori boundary measurement for fractional diffusion equations

In this article we study inverse source problems for time-fractional diffusion equations from \textit{a posteriori} boundary measurement. Using the memory effect of these class of equations, we solve these inverse problems for several class of space or time dependent source terms. We prove also the unique determination of a general class of space-time dependent separated variables source terms from such measurement. Our approach is based on the study of singularities of the Laplace transform in time of boundary traces of solutions of time-fractional diffusion equations.

Stable determination of unbounded potential by asymptotic boundary spectral data

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian $A_q=-Δ+q$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 3$, with real-valued perturbation $q \in L^{\max(2 , 3 d / 5)}(Ω)$. We examine the stability issue in the inverse problem of determining the electric potential $q$ from the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of $A_q$. Assuming that the boundary measurement of the normal derivative of the eigenfunctions is a square summable sequence in $L^2(\partial Ω)$, we prove that $q$ can be Hölder stably retrieved through knowledge of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues

Lipschitz and Hölder stable determination of nonlinear terms for elliptic equations

We consider the inverse problem of determining some class of nonlinear terms appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary measurements. More precisely, we study the stability issue for this class of inverse problems. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a Lipschitz and a Hölder stability estimate associated with the determination of quasilinear and semilinear terms appearing in this class of elliptic equations from measurements restricted to an arbitrary parts of the boundary of the domain. Besides their mathematical interest, our stability estimates can be useful for improving numerical reconstruction of this class of nonlinear terms. Our approach combines the linearization technique with applications of suitable class of singular solutions.

The enclosure method for the detection of variable order in fractional diffusion equations

This paper is concerned with a new type of inverse obstacle problem governed by a variable-order time-fraction diffusion equation in a bounded domain. The unknown obstacle is a region where the space dependent variable-order of fractional time derivative of the governing equation deviates from a known homogeneous background one. The observation data is given by the Neumann data of the solution of the governing equation for a specially designed Dirichlet data. Under a suitable jump condition on the deviation, it is shown that the most recent version of the time domain enclosure method enables one to extract information about the geometry of the obstacle and a qualitative nature of the jump, from the observation data.
