We consider the so called Calderón problem which corresponds to the determination of a conductivity appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary measurements. Using several known results we propose a simplified and self contained proof of this result.

Unique determination of several coefficients in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equation by a single measurement

We consider the inverse problem of determining different type of information about a diffusion process, described by ordinary or fractional diffusion equations stated on a bounded domain, like the density of the medium or the velocity field associated with the moving quantities from a single boundary measurement. This properties will be associated with some general class of time independent coefficients that we recover from a single Neumann boundary measurement, on some parts of the boundary, of the solution of our diffusion equation with a suitable boundary input, located on some parts of the boundary.

Uniqueness to some inverse source problems for the wave equation in unbounded domains

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are proven sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

Uniqueness and stability for the recovery of a time-dependent source in elastodynamics

This paper is concerned with inverse source problems for the time-dependent Lamé system in an unbounded domain corresponding to the exterior of a bounded cavity or the full space $\R^3$. If the time and spatial variables of the source term can be separated with compact support, we prove that the vector valued spatial source term can be uniquely determined by boundary Dirichlet data in the exterior of a given cavity. Uniqueness and stability for recovering some class of time-dependent source terms are also obtained using partial boundary data.

On the determination of nonlinear terms appearing in semilinear hyperbolic equations

We consider the inverse problem of determining a general nonlinear term appearing in a semilinear hyperbolic equation on a Riemannian manifold with boundary $(M,g)$ of dimension $n=2,3$. We prove results of unique recovery of the nonlinear term $F(t,x,u)$, appearing in the equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_gu+F(t,x,u)=0$ on $(0,T)\times M$ with $T>0$, from some partial knowledge of the solutions $u$ on the boundary of the time-space cylindrical manifold $(0,T)\times M$ or on the lateral boundary $(0,T)\times\partial M$. We determine the expression $F(t,x,u)$ both on the boundary $x\in\partial M$ and inside the manifold $x\in M$.

Reconstruction and stable recovery of source terms and coefficients appearing in diffusion equations

We consider the inverse source problem of determining a source term depending on both time and space variable for fractional and classical diffusion equations in a cylindrical domain from boundary measurements. With suitable boundary conditions we prove that some class of source terms which are independent of one space direction, can be reconstructed from boundary measurements. Actually, we prove that this inverse problem is well-posed. We establish also some results of Lipschitz stability for the recovery of source terms which we apply to the stable recostruction of time-dependent coefficients.

Recovery of non-smooth coefficients appearing in anisotropic wave equations

We study the problem of unique recovery of a non-smooth one-form $\mathcal A$ and a scalar function $q$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map, $Λ_{\mathcal A,q}$, of a hyperbolic equation on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. We prove uniqueness of the one-form $\mathcal A$ up to the natural gauge, under weak regularity conditions on $\mathcal A,q$ and under the assumption that $(M,g)$ is simple. Under an additional regularity assumption, we also derive uniqueness of the scalar function $q$. The proof is based on the geometric optic construction and inversion of the light ray transform extended as a Fourier Integral Operator to non-smooth parameters and functions.

Determination of convection terms and quasi-linearities appearing in diffusion equations

We consider the highly nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem of determining some general expression $F(x,t,u,\nabla_xu)$ appearing in the diffusion equation $\partial_tu-Δ_x u+F(x,t,u,\nabla_xu)=0$ on $Ω\times(0,T)$, with $T>0$ and $Ω$ a bounded open subset of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq2$, from measurements of solutions on the lateral boundary $\partialΩ\times(0,T)$. We consider both linear and nonlinear expression of $F(x,t,u,\nabla_xu)$. In the linear case, the equation can be seen as a convection-diffusion equation and our inverse problem corresponds to the unique recovery, in some suitable sense, of a time evolving velocity field associated with the moving quantity as well as the density of the medium in some rough setting described by non-smooth coefficients on a Lipschitz domain. In the nonlinear case, we prove the recovery of more general quasi-linear expression appearing in a nonlinear parabolic equation associated with more complex model. Here the goal is to determine the underlying physical low of the system associated with our equation. In this paper, we consider for what seems to be the first time the unique recovery of a general vector valued first order coefficient, depending on both time and space variable. Moreover, we provide results of full recovery of some general class of quasi-linear terms admitting evolution inside the system independently of the solution from measurements at the boundary. These last results improve earlier works of Isakov in terms of generality and precision. In addition, our results give a partial positive answer, in terms of measurements restricted to the lateral boundary, to an open problem posed by Isakov in his classic book (\textit{Inverse Problems for Partial Differential Equations}) extended to the recovery of quasi-linear terms.

Determination of non-compactly supported electromagnetic potentials in unbounded closed waveguide

We study the inverse problem of determining a magnetic Schrödinger operator in an unbounded closed waveguide from boundary measurements. We consider this problem with a general closed waveguide in the sense that we only require our unbounded domain to be contained into an infinite cylinder. In this context we prove the unique recovery of the magnetic field and the electric potential associated with general bounded and non-compactly supported electromagnetic potentials. By assuming that the electromagnetic potentials are known on the neighborhood of the boundary outside a compact set, we even prove the unique determination of the magnetic field and the electric potential from measurements restricted to a bounded subset of the infinite boundary. Finally, in the case of a waveguide taking the form of an infinite cylindrical domain, we prove the recovery of the magnetic field and the electric potential from partial data corresponding to restriction of Neumann boundary measurements to slightly more than half of the boundary. We establish all these results by mean of suitable complex geometric optics solutions and Carleman estimates suitably designed for our problem stated in an unbounded domain and with bounded electromagnetic potentials.

Hölder Stable Recovery of Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Potentials Appearing in a Dynamical Anisotropic Schrödinger Equation

We consider the inverse problem of Höldder-stably determining the time- and space-dependent coefficients of the Schrödinger equation on a simple Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension $n\geq2$ from knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Assuming the divergence of the magnetic potential is known, we show that the electric and magnetic potentials can be Hölder-stably recovered from these data. Here we also remove the smallness assumption for the solenoidal part of the magnetic potential present in previous results.

Recovery of time dependent coefficients from boundary data for hyperbolic equations

We study uniqueness of the recovery of a time-dependent magnetic vector-valued potential and an electric scalar-valued potential on a Riemannian manifold from the knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map of a hyperbolic equation. The Cauchy data is observed on time-like parts of the space-time boundary and uniqueness is proved up to the natural gauge for the problem. The proof is based on Gaussian beams and inversion of the light ray transform on Lorentzian manifolds under the assumptions that the Lorentzian manifold is a product of a Riemannian manifold with a time interval and that the geodesic ray transform is invertible on the Riemannian manifold.

Inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness on two inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics with partial boundary data. We show that (1) if the temporal source function is compactly supported, then the spatial source profile function or the orbit function can be uniquely determined by the tangential trace of the electric field measured on part of a sphere, (2) if the temporal function is given by a Dirac distribution, then the impulsive time point and the source location can be uniquely determined at four receivers on a sphere.

A Borg-Levinson theorem for magnetic Schrödinger operators on a Riemannian manifold

This article is concerned with uniqueness and stability issues for the inverse spectral problem of recovering the magnetic field and the electric potential in a Riemannian manifold from some asymptotic knowledge of the boundary spectral data of the corresponding Schrödinger operator under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The spectral data consist of some asymptotic knowledge of a subset of eigenvalues and Neumann traces of the associated eigenfunctions of the magnetic Laplacian. We also address the same question for Schrödinger operators under Neumann boundary conditions, in which case we measure the Dirichlet traces of eigenfunctions. In our results we characterize the uniqueness of the magnetic field from a rate of growth of the eigenvalues, combined with suitable asymptotic properties of boundary observation of eigenfunctions, of the associated magnetic Schrödinger operator. To our best knowledge this is the first result proving uniqueness from such general asymptotic behavior of boundary spectral data.

Hyperbolic inverse problem with data on disjoint sets

We consider a restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to a wave type operator on a Riemannian manifold with boundary. The restriction corresponds to the case where the Dirichlet traces are supported on one subset of the boundary and the Neumann traces are restricted on another subset. We show that the restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines the lower order terms in the wave equation, up the natural gauge invariances, along a convex foliation of the manifold. We allow the lower order terms to be non-self-adjoint, and in particular, the corresponding physical system may have dissipation of energy.

Carleman estimate for the Schrödinger equation and application to magnetic inverse problems

We prove that the stationary magnetic potential vector and the electrostatic potential entering the dynamic magnetic Schrödinger equation can be Lipschitz stably retrieved through finitely many local boundary measurements of the solution. The proof is by means of a specific global Carleman estimate for the Schrödinger equation, established in the first part of the paper.

Initial-boundary value problem for distributed order time-fractional diffusion equations

We examine initial-boundary value problems for diffusion equations with distributed order time-fractional derivatives. We prove existence and uniqueness results for the weak solution to these systems, together with its continuous dependency on initial value and source term. Moreover, under suitable assumption on the source term, we establish that the solution is analytic in time.

Recovery of non compactly supported coefficients of elliptic equations on an infinite waveguide

We consider the unique recovery of a non compactly supported and non periodic perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in an unbounded cylindrical domain, also called waveguide, from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove recovery of general class of electric potentials from the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Dirichlet data is supported on slightly more than half of the boundary and the Neumann data is taken on the other half of the boundary. We apply this result in different context including recovery of some general class of coefficients from measurements on a bounded subset and recovery of an electric potential, supported on an unbounded cylinder, of a Schrödinger operator in a slab.
