Exact Rayleigh Reduction for Direct Detection of Turning Bifurcations

We introduce an exact Rayleigh reduction for the direct construction and detection of turning bifurcations in nonlinear parameter-dependent equations. A generalized Rayleigh functional ordinarily provides only a scalar necessary constraint on solutions. We show that, along a suitable one-parameter transformation orbit $u=\mathcal G_sϕ$, it can instead become the exact parameter law $λ=\mathcal R(\mathcal G_sϕ)$ of a genuine solution branch. Turning points are then found from nondegenerate critical points of this one-dimensional Rayleigh profile. The branch tangent automatically yields a kernel direction of the state linearization, and under the usual Fredholm, kernel-simplicity, and parameter-transversality assumptions the detected point is a simple fold. For Kirchhoff equations, amplitude scaling on bounded domains and spatial dilation on $\mathbb R^N$ yield explicit exact branches, global parameter thresholds, and countable hierarchies of turning values. For the generalized Kirchhoff law $M_b(A)=a+bA^θ$, the branch geometry is governed by the dimension--homogeneity index $θ(N-2)-2$: an interior turning bifurcation occurs exactly when $θ(N-2)>2$. This gives a universal bifurcation trichotomy that is independent of the particular Berestycki--Lions nonlinearity.

Cone Minimax Principles for Non-Selfadjoint Operator Pencils

We propose a variational approach to principal spectral values of non-selfadjoint operator pencils $\mathcal L u=λ\mathcal G u$, where the weight operator $\mathcal G$ may be singular. The aim is to obtain Rayleigh-type minimax formulas for selected real spectral levels in settings where the standard selfadjoint variational theory is unavailable and positivity-based methods may not apply directly. The construction is based on the extended two-variable Rayleigh quotient \[ \mathcal R(u,v) = \frac{\langle \mathcal L u,v\rangle} {(\mathcal G u,v)_H},\] defined on admissible cone pairs. It leads to dual sup-inf and inf-sup principal levels, cone quasi-eigenvalues, and corresponding trapping and saddle-point principles. The resulting minimax formulas characterize selected real cone levels of non-selfadjoint operator pencils and identify them with principal spectral values whenever positive right-left eigenpairs exist, including cases with non-invertible operators and singular weights. We prove that these formulas are stable under finite-dimensional approximation. Thus the classical idea of approximating spectral data by finite-dimensional variational problems acquires an analogue for non-selfadjoint operator pencils in an ordered cone setting. The method also yields a posteriori spectral certificates, one-sided perturbation bounds, and approximation estimates. Elliptic examples illustrate both the scope of the method and the sharpness of the estimates.

Uniqueness of Ground State Solutions for a Defocusing Hartree Equation via Inverse Optimal Problems

We study a generalized defocusing Hartree equation with nonlocal exchange potential and repulsive Hartree--Fock interaction. Using an inverse optimal problem (IOP) approach, we prove the existence and uniqueness of ground state solutions. Additionally, we establish the existence of principal solutions, their continuous dependence on parameters, and a dual variational formulation. The IOP method provides a systematic framework for addressing inverse problems in nonlocal Schrödinger operators and offers new insights into the structure of solutions for defocusing Hartree-type equations.

A new proof of the Perron-Frobeniuos theorem, a variational approach

We develop the Perron-Frobenius theory using a variational approach and extend it to a set of arbitrary matrices, including those that are neither irreducible nor essentially positive, and non-preserved cones. We introduce a new concept called a quasi-eigenvalue of a matrix, which is invariant under orthogonal transformations of variables, and has various useful properties, such as determining the largest value of the real parts of the eigenvalues of a matrix. We extend Weyl's inequality for the eigenvalues to the set of arbitrary matrices and prove the new stability result to the Perron root of irreducible nonnegative matrices under arbitrary perturbations. As well as this, we obtain new types of estimates for the ranges of the sets of eigenvalues and their real parts.

On finding bifurcations for non-variational elliptic systems by the extended quotients method

We develop a novel method for finding bifurcations for nonlinear systems of equations based on directly finding bifurcations through saddle points of extended quotients. The method is applied to find the saddle-node bifurcation point for elliptic equations with the nonlinearity of the general convex-concave type. The main result justifies the variational formula for the detection of the maximum saddle-node type bifurcation point of stable positive solutions. As a consequence, a precise threshold value separating the interval of the existence of stable positive solutions is established.

Existence and uniqueness of a saddle-node bifurcation point for nonlinear equations in general domains

This paper provides a direct method of establishing the existence and uniqueness of saddle-node bifurcations for nonlinear equations in general domains. The method employs the scaled extended quotient whose saddle points correspond to the saddle-node bifurcations. The uniqueness of the saddle-node bifurcation point directly stems from the uniqueness of the saddle point. The method is applied to solving open problems involving the existence and uniqueness of the maximum saddle-node bifurcation for the positive solutions curve to an elliptic boundary value problem with a convex-concave nonlinearity in general domains.

A finding of the maximal saddle-node bifurcation for systems of differential equations

A variational method is presented for directly finding the bifurcation point of nonlinear equations as the saddle-node point of the extended nonlinear Rayleigh quotient. The method is applied for solving an open problem on the existence of a maximal saddle-node bifurcation point for set of positive solutions of system equations with convex-concave type nonlinearity.

On prescribed energy saddle-point solutions to indefinite problems

A minimax variational principle for saddle-point solutions with prescribed energy levels is introduced. The approach is based on the development of the linking theorem to the energy level nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients. An application to indefinite elliptic Dirichlet problems is presented. Among the consequences, the existence of solutions with zero-energy levels is obtained.

On periodic and compactly supported least energy solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity

We discuss the existence and non-existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity of the form: $-Δu=λu^p - u^q$ in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $ 0< q < p \leq 1$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. The approach is based on the Nehari manifold method supplemented by a one-sided constraint given through the functional of the suitable Pohozaev identity. The limit value of the parameter $λ$, where the approach is applicable, corresponds to the existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions. This value is found through the extrem values of nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients and the so-called curve of the critical exponents of $p,q$. Important properties of the solutions are derived, such as that they are not trivial with respect to the periodic variable and do not coincide with compactly supported solutions on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$.

Existence of S-shaped type bifurcation curve with dual cusp catastrophe via variational methods

We discuss the existence of multiple positive solutions leading to the occurrence of an S-shaped bifurcation curve to the equations of the form $$ -Δ_p u= f(μ,λ, u)~ \mbox{in} ~Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N $$ where $Δ_p$ is a $p$-Laplacian, $p>1$, $N\geq 1$, $μ, λ\in \mathbb{R}$. We deal with relatively unexplored cases when $f(μ,λ, u)$ is non-Lipschitz at $u=0$, $f(μ,λ, 0) = 0 $ and $ f(μ,λ, u) <0$, $u \in (0,r)$, for some $r<+\infty$. We develop the nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients method to find a range of parameters where the equation may have distinct branches of positive solutions. As a consequence, applying the Nehari manifold method and the mountain pass theorem, we prove that the equation for some range of values $μ, λ$, has at least three positive solutions with two linearly unstable solutions and one linearly stable. The results evidence that the bifurcation curve is S-shaped and exhibits the so-called dual cusp catastrophe which is characterized by the fact that the corresponding dynamic equation has stable states only within the cusp-shaped region in the control plane of parameters. Our results are new even in the one-dimensional case and $p=2$.

On orbital stability of the physical ground states of the NLS equations

We prove orbital stability result for physical ground states of a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the sense that the set of these ground states is contained in the set of prescribed mass solutions which is orbital stable by the Cazenave-Lions theorem. We apply the nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients method which allows establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the values of the mass $m$, the frequency $λ$, and the action level $S$ of the physical ground states.

Estimates on the spectral interval of validity of the anti-maximum principle

The anti-maximum principle for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem to $-Δ_p u = λ|u|^{p-2}u + f(x)$ with positive $f \in L^\infty(Ω)$ states the existence of a critical value $λ_f > λ_1$ such that any solution of this problem with $λ\in (λ_1, λ_f)$ is strictly negative. In this paper, we give a variational upper bound for $λ_f$ and study its properties. As an important supplementary result, we investigate the branch of ground state solutions of the considered boundary value problem in $(λ_1,λ_2)$.

On a generalized Collatz-Wielandt formula and finding saddle-node bifurcations

We introduce the nonlinear generalized Collatz-Wielandt formula $$ λ^*= \sup_{x\in Q}\min_{i:h_i(x) \neq 0} \frac{g_i(x)}{ h_i(x)}, ~~Q \subset \mathbb{R}^n,$$ and prove that its solution $(x^*,λ^*)$ yields the maximal saddle-node bifurcation for systems of equations of the form: $g(x)-λh(x)=0, ~~x \in Q$. Using this we introduce a simply verifiable criterion for the detection of saddle-node bifurcations of a given system of equations. We apply this criterion to prove the existence of the maximal saddle-node bifurcations for finite-difference approximations of nonlinear partial differential equations and for the system of power flow equations.

On branches of positive solutions for p-Laplacian problems at the extreme value of Nehari manifold method

This paper is concerned with variational continuation of branches of solutions for nonlinear boundary value problems, which involve the p-Laplacian, the indefinite nonlinearity, and depend on the real parameter $λ$. A special focus is made on the extreme value of Nehari manifold $λ^*$, which determines the threshold of applicability of Nehari manifold method. In the main result the existence of two branches of positive solutions for the cases where parameter $λ$ lies above the threshold $λ^*$ is obtained.

We prove that flat ground state solutions ($i.e.$ minimizing the energy and with gradient vanishing on the boundary of the domain) of the Dirichlet problem associated to some semilinear autonomous elliptic equations with a strong absorption term given by a non-Lipschitz function are unstable for dimensions $N=1,2$ and they can be stable for $N\geq 3$ for suitable values of the involved exponents.

On critical exponents curve for nonlinear elliptic equations in zero mass case

Semilinear elliptic equations of the form $-Δu =λ|u|^{p-2}u- |u|^{q-2}u$ in bounded and unbounded domains are considered. In the plane of exponents $p\times q$, the so-called critical exponents curve is introduced which separates domains with qualitatively distinctive properties of the considered equations and the associated parabolic problems. Necessary conditions for solvability to equations, stable and unstable stationary solutions, an existence of global solutions for parabolic problems in the whole space are obtained.

On extreme values of Nehari manifold method via nonlinear Rayleigh's quotient

We study applicability conditions of the Nehari manifold method for the equation of the form $ D_u T(u)-λD_u F(u)=0 $ in a Banach space $W$, where $λ$ is a real parameter. Our study is based on the development of the theory Rayleigh's quotient for nonlinear problems. It turns out that the extreme values of parameter $λ$ for the Nehari manifold method can be found through the critical values of a corresponding nonlinear generalized Rayleigh's quotient. In the main part of the paper, we provide some general results on this relationship. Applications are given to several types of nonlinear elliptic equations and systems of equations.
