Machine Learning Allows Calibration Models to Predict Trace Element Concentration in Soil with Generalized LIBS Spectra

Calibration models have been developed for determination of trace elements, silver for instance, in soil using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The major concern is the matrix effect. Although it affects the accuracy of LIBS measurements in a general way, the effect appears accentuated for soil because of large variation of chemical and physical properties among different soils. The purpose is to reduce its influence in such way an accurate and soil-independent calibration model can be constructed. At the same time, the developed model should efficiently reduce experimental fluctuations affecting measurement precision. A univariate model first reveals obvious influence of matrix effect and important experimental fluctuation. A multivariate model has been then developed. A key point is the introduction of generalized spectrum where variables representing the soil type are explicitly included. Machine learning has been used to develop the model. After a necessary pretreatment where a feature selection process reduces the dimension of raw spectrum accordingly to the number of available spectra, the data have been fed in to a back-propagation neuronal networks (BPNN) to train and validate the model. The resulted soilindependent calibration model allows average relative error of calibration (REC) and average relative error of prediction (REP) within the range of 5-6%.

Social power evolution in influence networks with stubborn individuals

This paper studies the evolution of social power in influence networks with stubborn individuals. Based on the Friedkin-Johnsen opinion dynamics and the reflected appraisal mechanism, two models are proposed over issue sequences and over a single issue, respectively. These models generalize the original DeGroot-Friedkin (DF) model by including stubbornness. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first attempt to investigate the social power evolution of stubborn individuals basing on the reflected appraisal mechanism. Properties of equilibria and convergence are provided. We show that the models have same equilibrium social power and convergence property, where the equilibrium social power depends only upon interpersonal influence and individuals' stubbornness. Roughly speaking, more stubborn individual has more equilibrium social power. Moreover, unlike the DF model without stubbornness, we prove that for the models with stubbornness, autocracy can never be achieved, while democracy can be achieved under any network topology.

THORS: An Efficient Approach for Making Classifiers Cost-sensitive

In this paper, we propose an effective THresholding method based on ORder Statistic, called THORS, to convert an arbitrary scoring-type classifier, which can induce a continuous cumulative distribution function of the score, into a cost-sensitive one. The procedure, uses order statistic to find an optimal threshold for classification, requiring almost no knowledge of classifiers itself. Unlike common data-driven methods, we analytically show that THORS has theoretical guaranteed performance, theoretical bounds for the costs and lower time complexity. Coupled with empirical results on several real-world data sets, we argue that THORS is the preferred cost-sensitive technique.

ClusterNet: 3D Instance Segmentation in RGB-D Images

We propose a method for instance-level segmentation that uses RGB-D data as input and provides detailed information about the location, geometry and number of individual objects in the scene. This level of understanding is fundamental for autonomous robots. It enables safe and robust decision-making under the large uncertainty of the real-world. In our model, we propose to use the first and second order moments of the object occupancy function to represent an object instance. We train an hourglass Deep Neural Network (DNN) where each pixel in the output votes for the 3D position of the corresponding object center and for the object's size and pose. The final instance segmentation is achieved through clustering in the space of moments. The object-centric training loss is defined on the output of the clustering. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art instance segmentation method on our synthesized dataset. We show that our method generalizes well on real-world data achieving visually better segmentation results.

Horizontal variation of Tate--Shafarevich groups

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and $ι: \overline{\mathbb{Q}}\hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}_p$ an embedding. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $H_{K}$ the corresponding Hilbert class field. For a class group character $χ$ over $K$, let $\mathbb{Q}(χ)$ be the field generated by the image of $χ$ and $\mathfrak{p}_χ$ the prime of $\mathbb{Q}(χ)$ above $p$ determined via $ι_p$. Under mild hypotheses, we show that the number of class group characters $χ$ such that the $χ$-isotypic Tate--Shafarevich group of $E$ over $H_{K}$ is finite with trivial $\mathfrak{p}_χ$-part increases with the absolute value of the discriminant of $K$.

Opinion dynamics in social networks with stubborn agents: an issue-based perspective

Classic models on opinion dynamics usually focus on a group of agents forming their opinions interactively over single issue. Yet generally consensus can not be achieved over single issue when agents are not completely open to interpersonal influence. In this paper, opinion consensus in social networks with stubborn agents is considered over issue sequences. The social network with stubborn agents is described by the Friedkin-Johnsen (F-J) model where agents are stubborn to their initial opinions. Firstly, we propose some sufficient and necessary conditions both in terms of network topology and system matrix for convergence of the F-J model over single issue. Secondly, opinion consensus of the F-J model is investigated over issue sequences. Our analysis establishes connections between the interpersonal influence network and the network describing the relationship of agents' initial opinions for successive issues. Taking advantage of these connections, we derive the sufficient and necessary condition for the F-J model to achieve opinion consensus over issue sequences. Finally, we consider a more general scenario where each agent has bounded confidence in forming its initial opinion for every issue. By analyzing the evolution of agents' ultimate opinions for each issue over issue sequences, we prove that the connectivity of the state-dependent network is preserved in this setting. Then the conditions for agents to achieve opinion consensus over issue sequences are proposed. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

A Statistical Framework for Improved Automatic Flaw Detection in Nondestructive Evaluation Images

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques are widely used to detect flaws in critical components of systems like aircraft engines, nuclear power plants and oil pipelines in order to prevent catastrophic events. Many modern NDE systems generate image data. In some applications an experienced inspector performs the tedious task of visually examining every image to provide accurate conclusions about the existence of flaws. This approach is labor-intensive and can cause misses due to operator ennui. Automated evaluation methods seek to eliminate human-factors variability and improve throughput. Simple methods based on peak amplitude in an image are sometimes employed and a trained-operator-controlled refinement that uses a dynamic threshold based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) has also been implemented. We develop an automated and optimized detection procedure that mimics these operations. The primary goal of our methodology is to reduce the number of images requiring expert visual evaluation by filtering out images that are overwhelmingly definitive on the existence or absence of a flaw. We use an appropriate model for the observed values of the SNR-detection criterion to estimate the probability of detection. Our methodology outperforms current methods in terms of its ability to detect flaws.

PlatEMO: A MATLAB Platform for Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization

Over the last three decades, a large number of evolutionary algorithms have been developed for solving multiobjective optimization problems. However, there lacks an up-to-date and comprehensive software platform for researchers to properly benchmark existing algorithms and for practitioners to apply selected algorithms to solve their real-world problems. The demand of such a common tool becomes even more urgent, when the source code of many proposed algorithms has not been made publicly available. To address these issues, we have developed a MATLAB platform for evolutionary multi-objective optimization in this paper, called PlatEMO, which includes more than 50 multi-objective evolutionary algorithms and more than 100 multi-objective test problems, along with several widely used performance indicators. With a user-friendly graphical user interface, PlatEMO enables users to easily compare several evolutionary algorithms at one time and collect statistical results in Excel or LaTeX files. More importantly, PlatEMO is completely open source, such that users are able to develop new algorithms on the basis of it. This paper introduces the main features of PlatEMO and illustrates how to use it for performing comparative experiments, embedding new algorithms, creating new test problems, and developing performance indicators. Source code of PlatEMO is now available at: http://bimk.ahu.edu.cn/index.php?s=/Index/Software/index.html.

Full reconstruction of a 14-qubit state within four hours

Full quantum state tomography (FQST) plays a unique role in the estimation of the state of a quantum system without \emph{a priori} knowledge or assumptions. Unfortunately, since FQST requires informationally (over)complete measurements, both the number of measurement bases and the computational complexity of data processing suffer an exponential growth with the size of the quantum system. A 14-qubit entangled state has already been experimentally prepared in an ion trap, and the data processing capability for FQST of a 14-qubit state seems to be far away from practical applications. In this paper, the computational capability of FQST is pushed forward to reconstruct a 14-qubit state with a run time of only 3.35 hours using the linear regression estimation (LRE) algorithm, even when informationally overcomplete Pauli measurements are employed. The computational complexity of the LRE algorithm is first reduced from $O(10^{19})$ to $O(10^{15})$ for a 14-qubit state, by dropping all the zero elements, and its computational efficiency is further sped up by fully exploiting the parallelism of the LRE algorithm with parallel Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) programming. Our result can play an important role in quantum information technologies with large quantum systems.

Snowfall induced by corona discharge

We demonstrated for the first time the condensation and precipitation (or snowfall) induced by a corona discharge inside a cloud chamber. Ionic wind was found to have played a more significant role than ions as extra Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN). 2.25 g of net snow enhancement was measured after applying a 30 kV corona discharge for 25 min. In comparison with another newly emerging femtosecond laser filamentation method, the snow precipitation induced by the corona discharge has about 4 orders of magnitude higher wall-plug efficiency under similar conditions.

Setup of a photomultiplier tube test bench for use at LHAASO-KM2A

To fulfill the requirements for testing the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) of the electromagnetic detec- tor at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), a multi-functional PMT test bench with a two dimensional scanning system has been developed. With this 2D scanning system, 16 PMTs can be scanned simultaneously for characteristics tests, including uniformity, cathode transit time difference, single photo-electron spectrum, gain vs. high voltage, linear behavior and dark noise. The programmable hardware and intelligent software of the test bench make it convenient to use and provide reliable results. The test methods are described in detail and primary results are presented.

Coherent population transfer between weakly-coupled states in a ladder-type superconducting qutrit

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) offers significant advantages for coherent population transfer between un- or weakly-coupled states and has the potential of realizing efficient quantum gate, qubit entanglement, and quantum information transfer. Here we report on the realization of STIRAP in a superconducting phase qutrit - a ladder-type system in which the ground state population is coherently transferred to the second-excited state via the dark state subspace. The result agrees well with the numerical simulation of the master equation, which further demonstrates that with the state-of-the-art superconducting qutrits the transfer efficiency readily exceeds $99\%$ while keeping the population in the first-excited state below $1\%$. We show that population transfer via STIRAP is significantly more robust against variations of the experimental parameters compared to that via the conventional resonant $π$ pulse method. Our work opens up a new venue for exploring STIRAP for quantum information processing using the superconducting artificial atoms.

Cube Sum Problem and an Explicit Gross-Zagier Formula

A nonzero rational number is called a cube sum if it is of form $a^3+b^3$ with $a,b\in \mathbb{Q}^\times$. In this paper, we prove that for any odd integer $k\geq 1$, there exist infinitely many cube-free odd integers $n$ with exactly $k$ distinct prime factors such that $2n$ is a cube sum (resp. not a cube sum). We give also a general construction of Heegner point and obtain an explicit Gross-Zagier formula which is used to prove the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for certain elliptic curve related to the cube sum problem.

Genus Periods, Genus Points and Congruent Number Problem

In this paper, based on an ideal of Tian, we establish a new sufficient condition for a positive integer to be a congruent number in terms of Legendre symbols of prime factors of the positive integer. Our criterion generalizes previous criterions of Heegner, and Birch--Stephens, Monsky, and Tian, and conjecturally provides a list of positive density of congruent numbers. Our method of proving our criterion is to give formulae for the analytic Tate--Shafarevich number in terms of the so-called genus periods and genus points. These formulae are derived from the Waldspurger formula and the generalized Gross--Zagier formula of Yuan-Zhang-Zhang.

A Statistical Approach to Identifying Significant Transgenerational Methylation Changes

Epigenetic aberrations have profound effects on phenotypic output. Genome wide methylation alterations are inheritable to pass down the aberrations through multiple generations. We developed a statistical method, Genome-wide Identification of Significant Methylation Alteration, GISAIM, to study the significant transgenerational methylation changes. GISAIM finds the significant methylation aberrations that are inherited through multiple generations. In a concrete biological study, we investigated whether exposing pregnant rats (F0) to a high fat (HF) diet throughout pregnancy or ethinyl estradiol (EE2)-supplemented diet during gestation days 14 20 affects carcinogen-induced mammary cancer risk in daughters (F1), granddaughters (F2) and great-granddaughters (F3). Mammary tumorigenesis was higher in daughters and granddaughters of HF rat dams, and in daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of EE2 rat dams. Outcross experiments showed that increased mammary cancer risk was transmitted to HF granddaughters equally through the female or male germlines, but is only transmitted to EE2 granddaughters through the female germline. Transgenerational effect on mammary cancer risk was associated with increased expression of DNA methyltransferases, and across all three EE2 generations hypo or hyper methylation of the same 375 gene promoter regions in their mammary glands. Our study shows that maternal dietary estrogenic exposures during pregnancy can increase breast cancer risk in multiple generations of offspring, and the increase in risk may be inherited through non-genetic means, possibly involving DNA methylation.
