Modular Software for Real-Time Quantum Control Systems

Real-time control software and hardware is essential for operating quantum computers. In particular, the software plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between quantum programs and the quantum system. Unfortunately, current control software is often optimized for a specific system at the cost of flexibility and portability. We propose a systematic design strategy for modular real-time quantum control software and demonstrate that modular control software can reduce the execution time overhead of kernels by 63.3% on average while not increasing the binary size. Our analysis shows that modular control software for two distinctly different systems can share between 49.8% and 91.0% of covered code statements. To demonstrate the modularity and portability of our software architecture, we run a portable randomized benchmarking experiment on two different ion-trap quantum systems.

A Unified Positive-Unlabeled Learning Framework for Document-Level Relation Extraction with Different Levels of Labeling

Document-level relation extraction (RE) aims to identify relations between entities across multiple sentences. Most previous methods focused on document-level RE under full supervision. However, in real-world scenario, it is expensive and difficult to completely label all relations in a document because the number of entity pairs in document-level RE grows quadratically with the number of entities. To solve the common incomplete labeling problem, we propose a unified positive-unlabeled learning framework - shift and squared ranking loss positive-unlabeled (SSR-PU) learning. We use positive-unlabeled (PU) learning on document-level RE for the first time. Considering that labeled data of a dataset may lead to prior shift of unlabeled data, we introduce a PU learning under prior shift of training data. Also, using none-class score as an adaptive threshold, we propose squared ranking loss and prove its Bayesian consistency with multi-label ranking metrics. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves an improvement of about 14 F1 points relative to the previous baseline with incomplete labeling. In addition, it outperforms previous state-of-the-art results under both fully supervised and extremely unlabeled settings as well.

A Transformer-based Generative Model for De Novo Molecular Design

In the scope of drug discovery, the molecular design aims to identify novel compounds from the chemical space where the potential drug-like molecules are estimated to be in the order of 10^60 - 10^100. Since this search task is computationally intractable due to the unbounded search space, deep learning draws a lot of attention as a new way of generating unseen molecules. As we seek compounds with specific target proteins, we propose a Transformer-based deep model for de novo target-specific molecular design. The proposed method is capable of generating both drug-like compounds (without specified targets) and target-specific compounds. The latter are generated by enforcing different keys and values of the multi-head attention for each target. In this way, we allow the generation of SMILES strings to be conditional on the specified target. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is capable of generating both valid drug-like compounds and target-specific compounds. Moreover, the sampled compounds from conditional model largely occupy the real target-specific molecules' chemical space and also cover a significant fraction of novel compounds.

Transfer Learning of wav2vec 2.0 for Automatic Lyric Transcription

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has progressed significantly in recent years due to the emergence of large-scale datasets and the self-supervised learning (SSL) paradigm. However, as its counterpart problem in the singing domain, the development of automatic lyric transcription (ALT) suffers from limited data and degraded intelligibility of sung lyrics. To fill in the performance gap between ALT and ASR, we attempt to exploit the similarities between speech and singing. In this work, we propose a transfer-learning-based ALT solution that takes advantage of these similarities by adapting wav2vec 2.0, an SSL ASR model, to the singing domain. We maximize the effectiveness of transfer learning by exploring the influence of different transfer starting points. We further enhance the performance by extending the original CTC model to a hybrid CTC/attention model. Our method surpasses previous approaches by a large margin on various ALT benchmark datasets. Further experiments show that, with even a tiny proportion of training data, our method still achieves competitive performance.

System-Level Evaluation of Beam Hopping in NR-Based LEO Satellite Communication System

Satellite communication by leveraging the use of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites is expected to play an essential role in future communication systems through providing ubiquitous and continuous wireless connectivity. This thus has motivated the work in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) to ensure the operation of fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) protocols for non-terrestrial network (NTN). In this paper, we consider a NR-based LEO satellite communication system, where satellites equipped with phased array antennas are employed to serve user equipments (UEs) on the ground. To reduce payload weight and meet the time-varying traffic demands of UEs, an efficient beam hopping scheme considering both the traffic demands and inter-beam interference is proposed to jointly schedule beams and satellite transmit power. Then based on NR protocols, we present the first system-level evaluations of beam hopping scheme in LEO satellite system under different operating frequency bands and traffic models. Simulation results indicate that significant performance gains can be achieved by the proposed beam hopping scheme, especially under the distance limit constraint that avoids scheduling adjacent beams simultaneously, as compared to benchmark schemes.

Safety-based Speed Control of a Wheelchair using Robust Adaptive Model Predictive Control

Electric-powered wheelchair plays an important role in providing accessibility for people with mobility impairment. Ensuring the safety of wheelchair operation in different application scenarios and for diverse users is crucial when the designing controller for tracking tasks. In this work, we propose a safety-based speed tracking control algorithm for wheelchair systems with external disturbances and uncertain parameters at the dynamic level. The set-membership approach is applied to estimate the sets of uncertain parameters online and a designed model predictive control scheme with online model and control parameter adaptation is presented to guarantee safety-related constraints during the tracking process. The proposed controller can drive the wheelchair speed to a desired reference within safety constraints. For the inadmissible reference that violates the constraints, the proposed controller can steer the system to the neighbourhood of the closest admissible reference. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated based on the high-fidelity speed tracking results of two tasks that involve feasible and infeasible references.

quEEGNet: Quantum AI for Biosignal Processing

In this paper, we introduce an emerging quantum machine learning (QML) framework to assist classical deep learning methods for biosignal processing applications. Specifically, we propose a hybrid quantum-classical neural network model that integrates a variational quantum circuit (VQC) into a deep neural network (DNN) for electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyogram (EMG), and electrocorticogram (ECoG) analysis. We demonstrate that the proposed quantum neural network (QNN) achieves state-of-the-art performance while the number of trainable parameters is kept small for VQC.

Beat Transformer: Demixed Beat and Downbeat Tracking with Dilated Self-Attention

We propose Beat Transformer, a novel Transformer encoder architecture for joint beat and downbeat tracking. Different from previous models that track beats solely based on the spectrogram of an audio mixture, our model deals with demixed spectrograms with multiple instrument channels. This is inspired by the fact that humans perceive metrical structures from richer musical contexts, such as chord progression and instrumentation. To this end, we develop a Transformer model with both time-wise attention and instrument-wise attention to capture deep-buried metrical cues. Moreover, our model adopts a novel dilated self-attention mechanism, which achieves powerful hierarchical modelling with only linear complexity. Experiments demonstrate a significant improvement in demixed beat tracking over the non-demixed version. Also, Beat Transformer achieves up to 4% point improvement in downbeat tracking accuracy over the TCN architectures. We further discover an interpretable attention pattern that mirrors our understanding of hierarchical metrical structures.

Domain Adversarial Training on Conditional Variational Auto-Encoder for Controllable Music Generation

The variational auto-encoder has become a leading framework for symbolic music generation, and a popular research direction is to study how to effectively control the generation process. A straightforward way is to control a model using different conditions during inference. However, in music practice, conditions are usually sequential (rather than simple categorical labels), involving rich information that overlaps with the learned representation. Consequently, the decoder gets confused about whether to "listen to" the latent representation or the condition, and sometimes just ignores the condition. To solve this problem, we leverage domain adversarial training to disentangle the representation from condition cues for better control. Specifically, we propose a condition corruption objective that uses the representation to denoise a corrupted condition. Minimized by a discriminator and maximized by the VAE encoder, this objective adversarially induces a condition-invariant representation. In this paper, we focus on the task of melody harmonization to illustrate our idea, while our methodology can be generalized to other controllable generative tasks. Demos and experiments show that our methodology facilitates not only condition-invariant representation learning but also higher-quality controllability compared to baselines.

Improved Pump Setpoint Selection Using a Calibrated Hydraulic Model of a High-Pressure Irrigation System

This paper presents a case study of the operational management of the Robinvale high-pressure piped irrigation water delivery system (RVHPS) in Australia. Based on datasets available, improved pump setpoint selection using a calibrated hydraulic model is investigated. The first step was to implement pre-processing of measured flow and pressure data to identify errors in the data and possible faulty sensors. An EPANET hydraulic simulation model was updated with calibrated pipe roughness height values by using the processed pressure and flow data. Then, new pump setpoints were selected using the calibrated model given the actual measured demands such that the pressures in the network were minimized subject to required customer service standards. Based on a two-day simulation, it was estimated that 4.7% savings in pumping energy cost as well as 4.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved by applying the new pump setpoints.

Biased self-diffusion on Cu surface due to electric field gradients

Under strong electric fields, an arc of strong current flowing through plasma can link two metal surfaces even in ultra high vacuum. Despite decades of research, the chain of events leading to vacuum arc breakdowns is hitherto unknown. Previously we showed that a tall and sharp Cu nanotip exposed to strong electric fields heats up by field emission currents and eventually melts, evaporating neutral atoms that can contribute to plasma buildup. In this work, we investigate by means of molecular dynamics simulations whether surface diffusion biased by the presence of an electric field gradient can provide sufficient mass transport of atoms toward the top of the nanotip to maintain supply of neutrals for feeding plasma. To reach the necessary timescales and to add electric field in MD, we utilized a novel combination of collective variable~-driven hyperdynamics acceleration and coupling to a finite element mesh. In our simulations, we observed biased self-diffusion on Cu surfaces, that can contribute to the continuous replenishment of particle-emitting nanotips. This mechanism implies a need to reduce the rate of surface diffusion in devices that are susceptible to vacuum arcs. Finding suitable alloys or surface treatments that hinder the observed biased diffusion could guide the design of future devices, and greatly improve their efficiency.

A Practical Guide to Counterfactual Estimators for Causal Inference with Time-Series Cross-Sectional Data

This paper introduces a simple framework of counterfactual estimation for causal inference with time-series cross-sectional data, in which we estimate the average treatment effect on the treated by directly imputing counterfactual outcomes for treated observations. We discuss several novel estimators under this framework, including the fixed effects counterfactual estimator, interactive fixed effects counterfactual estimator, and matrix completion estimator. They provide more reliable causal estimates than conventional twoway fixed effects models when treatment effects are heterogeneous or unobserved time-varying confounders exist. Moreover, we propose a new dynamic treatment effects plot, along with several diagnostic tests, to help researchers gauge the validity of the identifying assumptions. We illustrate these methods with two political economy examples and develop an open-source package, fect, in both R and Stata to facilitate implementation.

Advanced Conditional Variational Autoencoders (A-CVAE): Towards interpreting open-domain conversation generation via disentangling latent feature representation

Currently end-to-end deep learning based open-domain dialogue systems remain black box models, making it easy to generate irrelevant contents with data-driven models. Specifically, latent variables are highly entangled with different semantics in the latent space due to the lack of priori knowledge to guide the training. To address this problem, this paper proposes to harness the generative model with a priori knowledge through a cognitive approach involving mesoscopic scale feature disentanglement. Particularly, the model integrates the macro-level guided-category knowledge and micro-level open-domain dialogue data for the training, leveraging the priori knowledge into the latent space, which enables the model to disentangle the latent variables within the mesoscopic scale. Besides, we propose a new metric for open-domain dialogues, which can objectively evaluate the interpretability of the latent space distribution. Finally, we validate our model on different datasets and experimentally demonstrate that our model is able to generate higher quality and more interpretable dialogues than other models.

Enhancing Dual-Encoders with Question and Answer Cross-Embeddings for Answer Retrieval

Dual-Encoders is a promising mechanism for answer retrieval in question answering (QA) systems. Currently most conventional Dual-Encoders learn the semantic representations of questions and answers merely through matching score. Researchers proposed to introduce the QA interaction features in scoring function but at the cost of low efficiency in inference stage. To keep independent encoding of questions and answers during inference stage, variational auto-encoder is further introduced to reconstruct answers (questions) from question (answer) embeddings as an auxiliary task to enhance QA interaction in representation learning in training stage. However, the needs of text generation and answer retrieval are different, which leads to hardness in training. In this work, we propose a framework to enhance the Dual-Encoders model with question answer cross-embeddings and a novel Geometry Alignment Mechanism (GAM) to align the geometry of embeddings from Dual-Encoders with that from Cross-Encoders. Extensive experimental results show that our framework significantly improves Dual-Encoders model and outperforms the state-of-the-art method on multiple answer retrieval datasets.

Non-decreasing Payment Rules for Combinatorial Auctions

Combinatorial auctions are used to allocate resources in domains where bidders have complex preferences over bundles of goods. However, the behavior of bidders under different payment rules is not well understood, and there has been limited success in finding Bayes-Nash equilibria of such auctions due to the computational difficulties involved. In this paper, we introduce non-decreasing payment rules. Under such a rule, the payment of a bidder cannot decrease when he increases his bid, which is a natural and desirable property. VCG-nearest, the payment rule most commonly used in practice, violates this property and can thus be manipulated in surprising ways. In contrast, we show that many other payment rules are non-decreasing. We also show that a non-decreasing payment rule imposes a structure on the auction game that enables us to search for an approximate Bayes-Nash equilibrium much more efficiently than in the general case. Finally, we introduce the utility planes BNE algorithm, which exploits this structure and outperforms a state-of-the-art algorithm by multiple orders of magnitude.

Crosstalk Suppression in Individually Addressed Two-Qubit Gates in a Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer

Crosstalk between target and neighboring spectator qubits due to spillover of control signals represents a major error source limiting the fidelity of two-qubit entangling gates in quantum computers. We show that in our laser-driven trapped-ion system coherent crosstalk error can be modelled as residual $X\hatσ_ϕ$ interaction and can be actively cancelled by single-qubit echoing pulses. We propose and demonstrate a crosstalk suppression scheme that eliminates all first-order crosstalk, yet only requires local control by driving rotations solely on the target qubits. We report a two-qubit Bell state fidelity of $99.52(6) \%$ with the echoing pulses applied after collective gates and $99.37(5) \%$ with the echoing pulses applied to each gate in a 5-ion chain. This scheme is widely applicable to other platforms with analogous interaction Hamiltonians.

Determination of Multi-mode Motional Quantum States in a Trapped Ion System

Trapped atomic ions are a versatile platform for studying interactions between spins and bosons by coupling the internal states of the ions to their motion. Measurement of complex motional states with multiple modes is challenging, because all motional state populations can only be measured indirectly through the spin state of ions. Here we present a general method to determine the Fock state distributions and to reconstruct the density matrix of an arbitrary multi-mode motional state. We experimentally verify the method using different entangled states of multiple radial modes in a 5-ion chain. This method can be extended to any system with Jaynes-Cummings type interactions.

Quantum Transfer Learning for Wi-Fi Sensing

Beyond data communications, commercial-off-the-shelf Wi-Fi devices can be used to monitor human activities, track device locomotion, and sense the ambient environment. In particular, spatial beam attributes that are inherently available in the 60-GHz IEEE 802.11ad/ay standards have shown to be effective in terms of overhead and channel measurement granularity for these indoor sensing tasks. In this paper, we investigate transfer learning to mitigate domain shift in human monitoring tasks when Wi-Fi settings and environments change over time. As a proof-of-concept study, we consider quantum neural networks (QNN) as well as classical deep neural networks (DNN) for the future quantum-ready society. The effectiveness of both DNN and QNN is validated by an in-house experiment for human pose recognition, achieving greater than 90% accuracy with a limited data size.
