B20-MnSi films grown on Si(100) substrates with magnetic skyrmion signature

Magnetic skyrmions have been suggested as information carriers for future spintronic devices. As the first material with experimentally confirmed skyrmions, B20-type MnSi was the research focus for decades. Although B20-MnSi films have been successfully grown on Si(111) substrates, there is no report about B20-MnSi films on Si(100) substrates, which would be more preferred for practical applications. In this letter, we present the first preparation of B20-MnSi on Si(100) substrates. It is realized by sub-second solid-state reaction between Mn and Si via flash-lamp annealing at ambient pressure. The regrown layer shows an enhanced Curie temperature of 43 K compared with bulk B20-MnSi. The magnetic skyrmion signature is proved in our films by magnetic and transport measurements. The millisecond-range flash annealing provides a promising avenue for the fabrication of Si-based skyrmionic devices.

Backdoor Attacks on Federated Learning with Lottery Ticket Hypothesis

Edge devices in federated learning usually have much more limited computation and communication resources compared to servers in a data center. Recently, advanced model compression methods, like the Lottery Ticket Hypothesis, have already been implemented on federated learning to reduce the model size and communication cost. However, Backdoor Attack can compromise its implementation in the federated learning scenario. The malicious edge device trains the client model with poisoned private data and uploads parameters to the center, embedding a backdoor to the global shared model after unwitting aggregative optimization. During the inference phase, the model with backdoors classifies samples with a certain trigger as one target category, while shows a slight decrease in inference accuracy to clean samples. In this work, we empirically demonstrate that Lottery Ticket models are equally vulnerable to backdoor attacks as the original dense models, and backdoor attacks can influence the structure of extracted tickets. Based on tickets' similarities between each other, we provide a feasible defense for federated learning against backdoor attacks on various datasets.

POI Alias Discovery in Delivery Addresses using User Locations

People often refer to a place of interest (POI) by an alias. In e-commerce scenarios, the POI alias problem affects the quality of the delivery address of online orders, bringing substantial challenges to intelligent logistics systems and market decision-making. Labeling the aliases of POIs involves heavy human labor, which is inefficient and expensive. Inspired by the observation that the users' GPS locations are highly related to their delivery address, we propose a ubiquitous alias discovery framework. Firstly, for each POI name in delivery addresses, the location data of its associated users, namely Mobility Profile are extracted. Then, we identify the alias relationship by modeling the similarity of mobility profiles. Comprehensive experiments on the large-scale location data and delivery address data from JD logistics validate the effectiveness.

Scalable Graph Neural Networks via Bidirectional Propagation

Graph Neural Networks (GNN) is an emerging field for learning on non-Euclidean data. Recently, there has been increased interest in designing GNN that scales to large graphs. Most existing methods use "graph sampling" or "layer-wise sampling" techniques to reduce training time. However, these methods still suffer from degrading performance and scalability problems when applying to graphs with billions of edges. This paper presents GBP, a scalable GNN that utilizes a localized bidirectional propagation process from both the feature vectors and the training/testing nodes. Theoretical analysis shows that GBP is the first method that achieves sub-linear time complexity for both the precomputation and the training phases. An extensive empirical study demonstrates that GBP achieves state-of-the-art performance with significantly less training/testing time. Most notably, GBP can deliver superior performance on a graph with over 60 million nodes and 1.8 billion edges in less than half an hour on a single machine. The codes of GBP can be found at https://github.com/chennnM/GBP .

Font Completion and Manipulation by Cycling Between Multi-Modality Representations

Generating font glyphs of consistent style from one or a few reference glyphs, i.e., font completion, is an important task in topographical design. As the problem is more well-defined than general image style transfer tasks, thus it has received interest from both vision and machine learning communities. Existing approaches address this problem as a direct image-to-image translation task. In this work, we innovate to explore the generation of font glyphs as 2D graphic objects with the graph as an intermediate representation, so that more intrinsic graphic properties of font styles can be captured. Specifically, we formulate a cross-modality cycled image-to-image model structure with a graph constructor between an image encoder and an image renderer. The novel graph constructor maps a glyph's latent code to its graph representation that matches expert knowledge, which is trained to help the translation task. Our model generates improved results than both image-to-image baseline and previous state-of-the-art methods for glyph completion. Furthermore, the graph representation output by our model also provides an intuitive interface for users to do local editing and manipulation. Our proposed cross-modality cycled representation learning has the potential to be applied to other domains with prior knowledge from different data modalities. Our code is available at https://github.com/VITA-Group/Font_Completion_Graph.

Temporal Knowledge Consistency for Unsupervised Visual Representation Learning

The instance discrimination paradigm has become dominant in unsupervised learning. It always adopts a teacher-student framework, in which the teacher provides embedded knowledge as a supervision signal for the student. The student learns meaningful representations by enforcing instance spatial consistency with the views from the teacher. However, the outputs of the teacher can vary dramatically on the same instance during different training stages, introducing unexpected noise and leading to catastrophic forgetting caused by inconsistent objectives. In this paper, we first integrate instance temporal consistency into current instance discrimination paradigms, and propose a novel and strong algorithm named Temporal Knowledge Consistency (TKC). Specifically, our TKC dynamically ensembles the knowledge of temporal teachers and adaptively selects useful information according to its importance to learning instance temporal consistency. Experimental result shows that TKC can learn better visual representations on both ResNet and AlexNet on linear evaluation protocol while transfer well to downstream tasks. All experiments suggest the good effectiveness and generalization of our method.

Influence of Roughness on Granular Avalanches

Combining X-ray tomography with simultaneous shear force measurement, we investigate shear-induced granular avalanches using spherical particles with different surface roughness. We find that systems consisting of particles with large surface roughness display quasi-periodic avalanches interrupted by crackling-like small ones. In contrast, systems consisting of particles with small roughness display no detectable avalanches. The stress drop of quasi-periodic avalanche shows a linear relation with the correlation length of particle non-affine displacement, suggesting that roughness enhances inter-particle locking and hence particle-level dynamic correlation length. However, the nonaffine displacement is two orders of magnitude smaller than particle size, indicating that stress is mainly released on the length scale of roughness. The correlation length of non-affine displacements abruptly increases when a quasi-periodic avalanche occurs, suggesting that quasi-periodic avalanches can be interpreted as a spinodal nucleation event in a first-order phase transition.

Black-Box Diagnosis and Calibration on GAN Intra-Mode Collapse: A Pilot Study

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) nowadays are capable of producing images of incredible realism. One concern raised is whether the state-of-the-art GAN's learned distribution still suffers from mode collapse, and what to do if so. Existing diversity tests of samples from GANs are usually conducted qualitatively on a small scale, and/or depends on the access to original training data as well as the trained model parameters. This paper explores to diagnose GAN intra-mode collapse and calibrate that, in a novel black-box setting: no access to training data, nor the trained model parameters, is assumed. The new setting is practically demanded, yet rarely explored and significantly more challenging. As a first stab, we devise a set of statistical tools based on sampling, that can visualize, quantify, and rectify intra-mode collapse. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed diagnosis and calibration techniques, via extensive simulations and experiments, on unconditional GAN image generation (e.g., face and vehicle). Our study reveals that the intra-mode collapse is still a prevailing problem in state-of-the-art GANs and the mode collapse is diagnosable and calibratable in black-box settings. Our codes are available at: https://github.com/VITA-Group/BlackBoxGANCollapse.

Efficient Top-k Ego-Betweenness Search

Betweenness centrality, measured by the number of times a vertex occurs on all shortest paths of a graph, has been recognized as a key indicator for the importance of a vertex in the network. However, the betweenness of a vertex is often very hard to compute because it needs to explore all the shortest paths between the other vertices. Recently, a relaxed concept called ego-betweenness was introduced which focuses on computing the betweenness of a vertex in its ego network. In this work, we study a problem of finding the top-k vertices with the highest ego-betweennesses. We first develop two novel search algorithms equipped with a basic upper bound and a dynamic upper bound to efficiently solve this problem. Then, we propose local-update and lazy-update solutions to maintain the ego-betweennesses for all vertices and the top-k results when the graph is updated, respectively. In addition, we also present two efficient parallel algorithms to further improve the efficiency. The results of extensive experiments on five large real-life datasets demonstrate the efficiency, scalability, and effectiveness of our algorithms.

PTP: Parallelized Tracking and Prediction with Graph Neural Networks and Diversity Sampling

Multi-object tracking (MOT) and trajectory prediction are two critical components in modern 3D perception systems that require accurate modeling of multi-agent interaction. We hypothesize that it is beneficial to unify both tasks under one framework in order to learn a shared feature representation of agent interaction. Furthermore, instead of performing tracking and prediction sequentially which can propagate errors from tracking to prediction, we propose a parallelized framework to mitigate the issue. Also, our parallel track-forecast framework incorporates two additional novel computational units. First, we use a feature interaction technique by introducing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to capture the way in which agents interact with one another. The GNN is able to improve discriminative feature learning for MOT association and provide socially-aware contexts for trajectory prediction. Second, we use a diversity sampling function to improve the quality and diversity of our forecasted trajectories. The learned sampling function is trained to efficiently extract a variety of outcomes from a generative trajectory distribution and helps avoid the problem of generating duplicate trajectory samples. We evaluate on KITTI and nuScenes datasets showing that our method with socially-aware feature learning and diversity sampling achieves new state-of-the-art performance on 3D MOT and trajectory prediction. SimPoE: Simulated Character Control for 3D Human Pose Estimation

Accurate estimation of 3D human motion from monocular video requires modeling both kinematics (body motion without physical forces) and dynamics (motion with physical forces). To demonstrate this, we present SimPoE, a Simulation-based approach for 3D human Pose Estimation, which integrates image-based kinematic inference and physics-based dynamics modeling. SimPoE learns a policy that takes as input the current-frame pose estimate and the next image frame to control a physically-simulated character to output the next-frame pose estimate. The policy contains a learnable kinematic pose refinement unit that uses 2D keypoints to iteratively refine its kinematic pose estimate of the next frame. Based on this refined kinematic pose, the policy learns to compute dynamics-based control (e.g., joint torques) of the character to advance the current-frame pose estimate to the pose estimate of the next frame. This design couples the kinematic pose refinement unit with the dynamics-based control generation unit, which are learned jointly with reinforcement learning to achieve accurate and physically-plausible pose estimation. Furthermore, we propose a meta-control mechanism that dynamically adjusts the character's dynamics parameters based on the character state to attain more accurate pose estimates. Experiments on large-scale motion datasets demonstrate that our approach establishes the new state of the art in pose accuracy while ensuring physical plausibility.

Experimental Test on Edwards Volume Ensemble of Tapped Granular Packings

Using X-ray tomography, we experimentally investigate granular packings subject to mechanical tapping for three types of beads with different friction coefficients. We validate Edwards volume ensemble in these three-dimensional granular systems and establish a granular version of thermodynamic zeroth law. Within Edwards framework, we also explicitly clarify how friction influences granular statistical mechanics as modifying the density of states, which allows us to determine the entropy as a function of packing fraction and friction subsequently. Additionally, we obtain a granular jamming phase diagram based on geometric coordination number and packing fraction.

FSCE: Few-Shot Object Detection via Contrastive Proposal Encoding

Emerging interests have been brought to recognize previously unseen objects given very few training examples, known as few-shot object detection (FSOD). Recent researches demonstrate that good feature embedding is the key to reach favorable few-shot learning performance. We observe object proposals with different Intersection-of-Union (IoU) scores are analogous to the intra-image augmentation used in contrastive approaches. And we exploit this analogy and incorporate supervised contrastive learning to achieve more robust objects representations in FSOD. We present Few-Shot object detection via Contrastive proposals Encoding (FSCE), a simple yet effective approach to learning contrastive-aware object proposal encodings that facilitate the classification of detected objects. We notice the degradation of average precision (AP) for rare objects mainly comes from misclassifying novel instances as confusable classes. And we ease the misclassification issues by promoting instance level intra-class compactness and inter-class variance via our contrastive proposal encoding loss (CPE loss). Our design outperforms current state-of-the-art works in any shot and all data splits, with up to +8.8% on standard benchmark PASCAL VOC and +2.7% on challenging COCO benchmark. Multi-attributed Community Search in Road-social Networks

Given a location-based social network, how to find the communities that are highly relevant to query users and have top overall scores in multiple attributes according to user preferences? Typically, in the face of such a problem setting, we can model the network as a multi-attributed road-social network, in which each user is linked with location information and $d$ ($\geq\! 1$) numerical attributes. In practice, user preferences (i.e., weights) are usually inherently uncertain and can only be estimated with bounded accuracy, because a human user is not able to designate exact values with absolute precision. Inspired by this, we introduce a normative community model suitable for multi-criteria decision making, called multi-attributed community (MAC), based on the concepts of $k$-core and a novel dominance relationship specific to preferences. Given uncertain user preferences, namely, an approximate representation of weights, the MAC search reports the exact communities for each of the possible weight settings. We devise an elegant index structure to maintain the dominance relationships, based on which two algorithms are developed to efficiently compute the top-$j$ MACs. The efficiency and scalability of our algorithms and the effectiveness of MAC model are demonstrated by extensive experiments on both real-world and synthetic road-social networks.

AnchorFace: An Anchor-based Facial Landmark Detector Across Large Poses

Facial landmark localization aims to detect the predefined points of human faces, and the topic has been rapidly improved with the recent development of neural network based methods. However, it remains a challenging task when dealing with faces in unconstrained scenarios, especially with large pose variations. In this paper, we target the problem of facial landmark localization across large poses and address this task based on a split-and-aggregate strategy. To split the search space, we propose a set of anchor templates as references for regression, which well addresses the large variations of face poses. Based on the prediction of each anchor template, we propose to aggregate the results, which can reduce the landmark uncertainty due to the large poses. Overall, our proposed approach, named AnchorFace, obtains state-of-the-art results with extremely efficient inference speed on four challenging benchmarks, i.e. AFLW, 300W, Menpo, and WFLW dataset. Code will be available at https://github.com/nothingelse92/AnchorFace.

A Practical Solution for SAR Despeckling With Adversarial Learning Generated Speckled-to-Speckled Images

In this letter, we aim to address a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) despeckling problem with the necessity of neither clean (speckle-free) SAR images nor independent speckled image pairs from the same scene, and a practical solution for SAR despeckling (PSD) is proposed. First, an adversarial learning framework is designed to generate speckled-to-speckled (S2S) image pairs from the same scene in the situation where only single speckled SAR images are available. Then, the S2S SAR image pairs are employed to train a modified despeckling Nested-UNet model using the Noise2Noise (N2N) strategy. Moreover, an iterative version of the PSD method (PSDi) is also presented. Experiments are conducted on both synthetic speckled and real SAR data to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods compared with several state-of-the-art methods. The results show that our methods can reach a good tradeoff between feature preservation and speckle suppression.

Elastomeric Nematic Colloids, Colloidal Crystals and Microstructures with Complex Topology

Control of physical behaviors of nematic colloids and colloidal crystals has been demonstrated by tuning particle shape, topology, chirality and surface charging. However, the capability of altering physical behaviors of such soft matter systems by changing particle shape and the ensuing responses to external stimuli has remained elusive. We fabricated genus-one nematic elastomeric colloidal ring-shaped particles and various microstructures using two-photon photopolymerization. Nematic ordering within both the nano-printed particle and the surrounding medium leads to anisotropic responses and actuation when heated. With the thermal control, elastomeric microstructures are capable of changing from genus-one to genus-zero surface topology. Using these particles as building blocks, we investigated elastomeric colloidal crystals immersed within a liquid crystal fluid, which exhibit crystallographic symmetry transformations. Our findings may lead to colloidal crystals responsive to a large variety of external stimuli, including electric fields and light. Pre-designed response of elastomeric nematic colloids, including changes of colloidal surface topology and lattice symmetry, are of interest for both fundamental research and applications.

Kinematics-Guided Reinforcement Learning for Object-Aware 3D Ego-Pose Estimation

We propose a method for incorporating object interaction and human body dynamics into the task of 3D ego-pose estimation using a head-mounted camera. We use a kinematics model of the human body to represent the entire range of human motion, and a dynamics model of the body to interact with objects inside a physics simulator. By bringing together object modeling, kinematics modeling, and dynamics modeling in a reinforcement learning (RL) framework, we enable object-aware 3D ego-pose estimation. We devise several representational innovations through the design of the state and action space to incorporate 3D scene context and improve pose estimation quality. We also construct a fine-tuning step to correct the drift and refine the estimated human-object interaction. This is the first work to estimate a physically valid 3D full-body interaction sequence with objects (e.g., chairs, boxes, obstacles) from egocentric videos. Experiments with both controlled and in-the-wild settings show that our method can successfully extract an object-conditioned 3D ego-pose sequence that is consistent with the laws of physics.
