Day-ahead Forecasts of Air Temperature

Air temperature is an essential factor that directly impacts the weather. Temperature can be counted as an important sign of climatic change, that profoundly impacts our health, development, and urban planning. Therefore, it is vital to design a framework that can accurately predict the temperature values for considerable lead times. In this paper, we propose a technique based on exponential smoothing method to accurately predict temperature using historical values. Our proposed method shows good performance in capturing the seasonal variability of temperature. We report a root mean square error of $4.62$ K for a lead time of $3$ days, using daily averages of air temperature data. Our case study is based on weather stations located in the city of Alpena, Michigan, United States.

Monitoring Atmospheric Pollutants From Ground-based Observations

Remote sensing analysts continuously monitor the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere. They are usually performed via satellite images. However, these images suffer from low temporal and low spatial resolution. Therefore, observations recorded from the ground offer us a fantastic alternative. There are low-cost sensors that continuously record the PM$_{2.5}$ and PM$_{10}$ concentration levels in the atmosphere. In this position paper, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques for pollutant forecasting. We establish the interdependence of meteorological parameters on atmospheric pollutants. Our case study in this paper is based on the island of Australia.

Embedding Cyclical Information in Solar Irradiance Forecasting

In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of embedding temporal information for an accurate prediction of solar irradiance. We have used two sets of models for forecasting solar irradiance. The first one uses only time series data of solar irradiance for predicting future values. The second one uses the historical solar irradiance values, together with the corresponding timestamps. We employ data from the weather station located at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore. The solar irradiance values are recorded with a temporal resolution of $1$ minute, for a period of $1$ year. We use Multilayer Perceptron Regression (MLP) technique for forecasting solar irradiance. We obtained significant better prediction accuracy when the time stamp information is embedded in the forecasting framework, as compared to solely using historical solar irradiance values.

Detecting Blurred Ground-based Sky/Cloud Images

Ground-based whole sky imagers (WSIs) are being used by researchers in various fields to study the atmospheric events. These ground-based sky cameras capture visible-light images of the sky at regular intervals of time. Owing to the atmospheric interference and camera sensor noise, the captured images often exhibit noise and blur. This may pose a problem in subsequent image processing stages. Therefore, it is important to accurately identify the blurred images. This is a difficult task, as clouds have varying shapes, textures, and soft edges whereas the sky acts as a homogeneous and uniform background. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework that can identify the blurred sky/cloud images. Using a static external marker, our proposed methodology has a detection accuracy of 94\%. To the best of our knowledge, our approach is the first of its kind in the automatic identification of blurred images for ground-based sky/cloud images.

An Interoperable Open Data Portal for Climate Analysis

This work proposes an open interoperable data portal that offers access to a Web-wide climate domain knowledge graph created for Ireland and England's NOAA climate daily data. There are three main components contributing to this data portal: the first is the upper layer schema of the knowledge graph -- the climate analysis (CA) ontology -- the second is an ad hoc SPARQL server by which to store the graph data and provide public Web access, the last is a dereferencing engine deployed to resolve URIs for entity information. Our knowledge graph form of NOAA climate data facilitates the supply of semantic climate information to researchers and offers a variety of semantic applications that can be built on top of it.

Impact of COVID19-induced Lockdown on Air Quality in Ireland

Air pollution has been a long-existing problem for most of the major metropolitan cities of the world. Several measures including strict climate laws and reduction in the number of vehicles were implemented by several nations. However, in the recent wake of the COVID19 pandemic, there has been a renewed interest in revisiting the problem of low air quality. Several countries implemented strict lockdown measures halting the vehicular traffic and other economic activities, in order to reduce the spread of COVID19. In this paper, we analyze the impact of such COVID19-induced lockdown on the air quality of the atmosphere. Our case study is based in the city of Dublin, Ireland. We analyze the average concentration of common gaseous pollutant majorly responsible for industrial and vehicular pollution, \textit{viz.} nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$). These concentrations are obtained from the tropospheric column of the atmosphere collected by Sentinel-5P, which is an earth observation satellite of European Space Agency. We observe that Dublin had a significant drop in the level of NO$_2$ concentration, owing to the strict lockdown measures implemented across the nation.

The Orientation Estimation of Elongated Underground Objects via Multi-Polarization Aggregation and Selection Neural Network

The horizontal orientation angle and vertical inclination angle of an elongated subsurface object are key parameters for object identification and imaging in ground penetrating radar (GPR) applications. Conventional methods can only extract the horizontal orientation angle or estimate both angles in narrow ranges due to limited polarimetric information and detection capability. To address these issues, this letter, for the first time, explores the possibility of leveraging neural networks with multi-polarimetric GPR data to estimate both angles of an elongated subsurface object in the entire spatial range. Based on the polarization-sensitive characteristic of an elongated object, we propose a multi-polarization aggregation and selection neural network (MASNet), which takes the multi-polarimetric radargrams as inputs, integrates their characteristics in the feature space, and selects discriminative features of reflected signal patterns for accurate orientation estimation. Numerical results show that our proposed MASNet achieves high estimation accuracy with an angle estimation error of less than 5°. The promising results obtained by the proposed method encourages one to think of new solutions for GPR-related tasks by integrating multi-polarization information with deep learning techniques.

Effects of Intermediate Frequency Bandwidth on Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar

A stepped frequency ground penetrating radar (GPR) system is used for detecting objects buried under high permittivity soil. Different intermediate frequency bandwidth (IFBW) of the mixing receiver is used and measurement results are compared. It is shown that the IFBW can affect the system's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Experimental results show that objects of different materials can clearly be detected when the appropriate IFBW is used.

Compact Dual-Polarized Vivaldi Antenna for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Application

In this paper, a compact dual-polarized Vivaldi antenna is presented. Four Vivaldi elements are used as radiators, and are positioned obliquely and connected in a horn shape. By exciting two sets of elements, two orthogonally polarized radiations can be achieved. The dual-polarized antenna features a low operating frequency band with a wide bandwidth, high port isolation, good directional radiation performance, and a very compact size, making it highly suitable for the ground penetrating radar (GPR) application.

Forecasting Precipitable Water Vapor Using LSTMs

Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM) networks have been used extensively for time series forecasting in recent years due to their ability of learning patterns over different periods of time. In this paper, this ability is applied to learning the pattern of Global Positioning System (GPS)-based Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) measurements over a period of 4 hours. The trained model was evaluated on more than 1500 hours of recorded data. It achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.098 mm for a forecasting interval of 5 minutes in the future, and outperforms the naive approach for a lead-time of up to 40 minutes.

A Chaotic Approach on Solar Irradiance Forecasting

We analyse the time series of solar irradiance measurements using chaos theory. The False Nearest Neighbour method (FNN), one of the most common methods of chaotic analysis is used for the analysis. One year data from the weather station located at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore with a temporal resolution of $1$ minute is employed for the study. The data is sampled at $60$ minutes interval and $30$ minutes interval for the analysis using the FNN method. Our experiments revealed that the optimum dimension required for solar irradiance is $4$ for both samplings. This indicates that a minimum of $4$ dimensions is required for embedding the data for the best representation of input. This study on obtaining the embedding dimension of solar irradiance measurement will greatly assist in fixing the number of previous data required for solar irradiance forecasting.

Predicting Solar Irradiance in Singapore

Solar irradiance is the primary input for all solar energy generation systems. The amount of available solar radiation over time under the local weather conditions helps to decide the optimal location, technology and size of a solar energy project. We study the behaviour of incident solar irradiance on the earth's surface using weather sensors. In this paper, we propose a time-series based technique to forecast the solar irradiance values for shorter lead times of upto 15 minutes. Our experiments are conducted in the tropical region viz. Singapore, which receives a large amount of solar irradiance throughout the year. We benchmark our method with two common forecasting techniques, namely persistence model and average model, and we obtain good prediction performance. We report a root mean square of 147 W/m^2 for a lead time of 15 minutes.

Subjective Quality Assessment of Ground-based Camera Images

Image quality assessment is critical to control and maintain the perceived quality of visual content. Both subjective and objective evaluations can be utilised, however, subjective image quality assessment is currently considered the most reliable approach. Databases containing distorted images and mean opinion scores are needed in the field of atmospheric research with a view to improve the current state-of-the-art methodologies. In this paper, we focus on using ground-based sky camera images to understand the atmospheric events. We present a new image quality assessment dataset containing original and distorted nighttime images of sky/cloud from SWINSEG database. Subjective quality assessment was carried out in controlled conditions, as recommended by the ITU. Statistical analyses of the subjective scores showed the impact of noise type and distortion level on the perceived quality.

Estimating Solar Irradiance Using Sky Imagers

Ground-based whole sky cameras are extensively used for localized monitoring of clouds nowadays. They capture hemispherical images of the sky at regular intervals using a fisheye lens. In this paper, we propose a framework for estimating solar irradiance from pictures taken by those imagers. Unlike pyranometers, such sky images contain information about cloud coverage and can be used to derive cloud movement. An accurate estimation of solar irradiance using solely those images is thus a first step towards short-term forecasting of solar energy generation based on cloud movement. We derive and validate our model using pyranometers co-located with our whole sky imagers. We achieve a better performance in estimating solar irradiance and in particular its short-term variations as compared to other related methods using ground-based observations.

A Data-Driven Approach for Accurate Rainfall Prediction

In recent years, there has been growing interest in using Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) signal delays to predict rainfall. However, the occurrence of rainfall is dependent on a myriad of atmospheric parameters. This paper proposes a systematic approach to analyze various parameters that affect precipitation in the atmosphere. Different ground-based weather features like Temperature, Relative Humidity, Dew Point, Solar Radiation, PWV along with Seasonal and Diurnal variables are identified, and a detailed feature correlation study is presented. While all features play a significant role in rainfall classification, only a few of them, such as PWV, Solar Radiation, Seasonal and Diurnal features, stand out for rainfall prediction. Based on these findings, an optimum set of features are used in a data-driven machine learning algorithm for rainfall prediction. The experimental evaluation using a four-year (2012-2015) database shows a true detection rate of 80.4%, a false alarm rate of 20.3%, and an overall accuracy of 79.6%. Compared to the existing literature, our method significantly reduces the false alarm rates.

CloudSegNet: A Deep Network for Nychthemeron Cloud Image Segmentation

We analyze clouds in the earth's atmosphere using ground-based sky cameras. An accurate segmentation of clouds in the captured sky/cloud image is difficult, owing to the fuzzy boundaries of clouds. Several techniques have been proposed that use color as the discriminatory feature for cloud detection. In the existing literature, however, analysis of daytime and nighttime images is considered separately, mainly because of differences in image characteristics and applications. In this paper, we propose a light-weight deep-learning architecture called CloudSegNet. It is the first that integrates daytime and nighttime (also known as nychthemeron) image segmentation in a single framework, and achieves state-of-the-art results on public databases.

Global Positioning System (GPS) derived precipitable water vapor (PWV) is extensively being used in atmospheric remote sensing for applications like rainfall prediction. Many applications require PWV values with good resolution and without any missing values. In this paper, we implement an exponential smoothing method to accurately predict the missing PWV values. The method shows good performance in terms of capturing the seasonal variability of PWV values. We report a root mean square error of 0.1~mm for a lead time of 15 minutes, using past data of 30 hours measured at 5-minute intervals.
