Jacobson's thermodynamic approach to classical gravity applied to non-Riemannian geometries: remarks on the simplicity of Nature

Three decades ago, Ted Jacobson surprised us with a very appealing approach to classical gravity. According to him, the gravitational field equations are the consequence of the first law of thermodynamics applied to a Rindler observer. Jacobson's approach being formulated for Riemannian geometries, we have wondered what its consequences would be for non-Riemannian geometries. The results of our quest have been particularly appealing: we have found that the theory that derives from the Einstein-Hilbert action, arguably ``the simplest one'', does not belong to the pool of gravitational theories available for Nature's selection (except in the Riemannian case). In the search of a unique alternative, we have considered the hypotheses employed in the formulation of the Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity. Together, the two approaches point towards the theory that derives from the Einstein-Hilbert action plus a term quadratic in the torsion vector as the one that would be selected by Nature in the non-Riemannian case without non metricity (when the energy-momentum tensor is identified as its metric version). The same strategy cannot be followed in the full non-Riemannian case (and in the previous case when the energy-momentum tensor is identified as its canonical version) as the two approaches are mutually inconsistent.

Dynamical Shortcomings in the Generalized SU(2) Proca Theory: Challenges for Cosmic Acceleration

The Generalized SU(2) Proca (GSU2P) theory has recently garnered attention for its potential to describe key phases of cosmic evolution, including primordial inflation and late-time accelerated expansion. However, its full cosmological implications remain unexplored. In this work, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the dynamical properties of the GSU2P theory in a flat, homogeneous, and isotropic spacetime, through a dynamical-system approach. Our analysis reveals the presence of three pairs of fixed points, one of them corresponding to de-Sitter expansion which may represent either a stable or unstable phase in the evolution of the universe. These points, nonetheless, give rise to an indeterminate or infinite Hubble parameter, which renders them cosmologically unviable. Additionally, we find two key pseudostationary states: the ``attractor lines'', along which the system exhibits constant-roll dynamics, and the ``central zone'', characterized by oscillatory radiation-like behaviour of the field. The dynamics within the central zone could represent a graceful exit from the primordial inflationary phase to a radiation dominated phase, or a state of the dark energy component prior to the late-time cosmic acceleration. However, within the central zone, the dynamics of the vector field leads to recurrent instances of a nonphysical expansion rate. The absence of a limit cycle in the central zone further exacerbates the issue, as the system may follow unbounded phase-space trajectories, and the expansion rate becomes complex once it escapes the region. Collectively, these challenges undermine the viability of the GSU2P theory as a cosmological model for cosmic acceleration.

Neutron stars in the generalized SU(2) Proca theory

The generalized SU(2) Proca theory is a vector-tensor modified gravity theory characterized by an action that remains invariant under both diffeomorphisms and global internal transformations of the SU(2) group. This study aims to further explore the physical properties of the theory within astrophysical contexts. Previous investigations have unveiled intriguing astrophysical solutions, including particle-like configurations and black holes. The purpose of this work is to constrain the theory's free parameters by modeling realistic neutron stars. To that end, we have assumed solutions that are static, spherically symmetric, and have adopted the t'Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole configuration for the vector fields. Employing both analytical techniques, such as asymptotic expansions, and numerical methods involving solving boundary value problems, we have obtained neutron star solutions whose baryonic matter is described by realistic equations of state for nuclear matter. Furthermore, we have constructed mass-radius relations which reveal that neutron stars exhibit greater compactness in comparison with general relativity predictions for most of the solutions we have found and for the employed equations of state. Finally, we have found out solutions where the mass of the star is greater than $\sim$ 2.5 $M_\odot$; this result poses an alternative in the exploration of the mass gap of compact stellar objects.

Particle-like solutions in the generalized SU(2) Proca theory

The generalized SU(2) Proca theory is a vector-tensor modified gravity theory where the action is invariant under both diffeomorphisms and global internal transformations of the SU(2) group. This work constitutes the first approach to investigate the physical properties of the theory at astrophysical scales. We have found solutions that naturally generalize the particle-like solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations, also known as gauge boson stars. Under the requirement that the solutions must be static, asymptotically flat, and globally regular, the t'Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole configuration for the vector field rises as one viable possibility. The solutions have been obtained analytically through asymptotic expansions and numerically by solving the boundary value problem. We have found new features in the solutions such as regions with negative effective energy density and imaginary effective charge. We have also obtained a new kind of globally charged solutions for some region in the parameter space of the theory. Furthermore, we have constructed equilibrium sequences and found turning points in some cases. These results hint towards the existence of stable solutions which are absent in the Einstein-Yang-Mills case.

Towards the extended SU(2) Proca theory

In this work, we explore the construction of the most general vector-tensor theory with an SU(2) global symmetry in the vector sector as a proposal for a modified theory of gravity. We start with a general Lagrangian containing terms involving symmetric and/or antisymmetric combinations of the covariant derivative of the vector field plus an arbitrary function of the vector field times the Ricci scalar. Then, we study the degeneracy of the full theory to determine whether it can be healthy or not. We find relations among some of the free functions in the Lagrangian that are necessary for the healthiness of the theory in correspondence with the several ways in which the kinetic matrix can be turned degenerate. Finally, we take the decoupling limit of the theory and find additional conditions on the free functions that are necessary for the healthiness of the longitudinal modes.

Decoupling-limit consistency of the generalized SU(2) Proca theory

We study the consistency of the decoupling limit of the generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P). Namely, we study the healthiness of those terms whose analysis in the scalar limit was not originally established in the reconstruction of the full theory (see the work by Gallego Cadavid et. al. [Phys. Rev. D 102, 104066 (2020)]). Those terms are the parity-violating $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{4,2}^1$ and the parity-conserving beyond SU(2) Proca terms $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^3$ and $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^4$. Using the 3+1 Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism, we write down the kinetic Lagrangian of these terms in the decoupling limit and show that their corresponding kinetic matrices are degenerate. This degeneracy is a necessary condition for the propagation of the right number of degrees of freedom, as required by the primary constraint-enforcing relation. Interestingly, the $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{4,2}^1$ term, which is purely non-Abelian, does not contribute to the kinetic Lagrangian of the theory, so its contribution is trivially degenerate. Similarly, but not trivially in these cases, the contributions of the $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^3$ and $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^4$ terms to the kinetic Lagrangian turn out to be degenerate as well. The results presented in this paper represent progress in the construction of the fully healthy GSU2P.

Anisotropic Scalar Field Dark Energy with a Disformally Coupled Yang-Mills Field

In the context of scalar-tensor theories, the inclusion of new degrees of freedom coupled non-minimally to the gravitational sector might produce some appealing effects on the cosmic expansion history. We investigate this premise by including a canonical SU(2) Yang- Mills field to the total energy budget of the universe coupled to the standard quintessential field by a disformal transformation. From the dynamical system analysis, we study three cases of cosmological interest that span most of the physical phase space of the model: the uncoupled limit, the isotropic, and the Abelian cases. New scaling solutions with a non-vanishing gauge field are found in all cases which can be interesting for early cosmological scenarios. Some of these scaling solutions even exhibit anisotropic features. Also, the background evolution of the universe is studied by means of numerical analysis. As an interesting result, the disformal coupling changes the equation of state of the gauge field from radiation to matter at some stages of the evolution of the universe, thereby the gauge field can contribute to some fraction of the total dark matter. We have also quantified the redshift-dependent contribution of the gauge field in the form of dark radiation during the radiation era to the effective number of relativistic species. This depends essentially on the initial conditions and, more importantly, on the disformal coupling function.

Constant-roll inflation in the generalized SU(2) Proca theory

The generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P) is a variant of the well known generalized Proca theory where the vector field belongs to the Lie algebra of the SU(2) group of global transformations under which the action is made invariant. New interesting possibilities arise in this framework because of the existence of new interactions of purely non-Abelian character and new configurations of the vector field resulting in spatial spherical symmetry and the cosmological dynamics being driven by the propagating degrees of freedom. We study the two-dimensional phase space of the system that results when the cosmic triad configuration is employed in the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background and find an attractor curve whose attraction basin both covers almost all the allowed region and does not include a Big-Bang singularity. Such an attractor curve corresponds to a primordial inflationary solution that has the following characteristic properties: 1.) it is a de Sitter solution whose Hubble parameter is regulated by a generalized version of the SU(2) group coupling constant, 2.) it is constant-roll including, as a limiting case, the slow-roll variety, 3.) a number of e-folds $N > 60$ is easily reached, 4.) it has a graceful exit into a radiation dominated period powered by the canonical kinetic term of the vector field and the Einstein-Hilbert term. The free parameters of the action are chosen such that the tensor sector of the theory is the same as that of general relativity at least up to second-order perturbations, thereby avoiding the presence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities in the tensor sector as well as making the gravity waves propagate at light speed. This is a proof of concept of the interesting properties we could find in this scenario when the coupling constants be replaced by general coupling functions and more terms be discovered in the GSU2P.

Coupled Multi-Proca Vector Dark Energy

We study a new class of vector dark energy models where multi-Proca fields $A_μ^a$ are coupled to cold dark matter by the term $f(X)\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{m}$ where $f(X)$ is a general function of $X\equiv -\frac{1}{2}A^μ_ a A^a_μ$ and $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{m}$ is the cold dark matter Lagrangian. From here, we derive the general covariant form of the novel interaction term sourcing the field equations. This result is quite general in the sense that encompasses Abelian and non-Abelian vector fields. In particular, we investigate the effects of this type of coupling in a simple dark energy model based on three copies of canonical Maxwell fields to realize isotropic expansion. The cosmological background dynamics of the model is examined by means of a dynamical system analysis to determine the stability of the emergent cosmological solutions. As an interesting result, we find that the coupling function leads to the existence of a novel scaling solution during the dark matter dominance. Furthermore, the critical points show an early contribution of the vector field in the form of dark radiation and a stable de Sitter-type attractor at late times mimicking dark energy. The cosmological evolution of the system as well as the aforementioned features are verified by numerical computations. Observational constraints are also discussed to put the model in a more phenomenological context in the light of future observations.

About the Teaching of Plane Motion of Rigid Bodies

The study of the motion of a rigid body on a plane (RBP motion) is usually one of the most challenging topics that students face in introductory physics courses. In this paper, we discuss a couple of problems which are typically used in basic physics courses, in order to highlight some aspects related to RBP motion which are not usually well understood by physics students. The first problem is a pendulum composed of a rod and disk. The angular frequency of the pendulum is calculated in two situations: disk fixed to the rod and disk free to spin. A detailed explanation of the change in the angular frequency from one case to another is given. The second problem is a ladder which slides touching a frictionless surface. We use this problem to highlight the fact that the contact forces applied by the surface perform translational and rotational work despite that the total mechanical energy of the ladder is conserved.

Anisotropic Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs Dark Energy

In the context of the dark energy scenario, the Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs model in the SO(3) representation was studied for the first time by M. Rinaldi (see JCAP 1510, 023 (2015)) in a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. We revisit this model, finding in particular that the interaction between the Higgs field and the gauge fields generates contributions to the momentum density, anisotropic stress and pressures, thus making the model inconsistent with the assumed background. We instead consider a homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi-I space-time background in this paper and analyze the corresponding dynamical behaviour of the system. We find that the only attractor point corresponds to an isotropic accelerated expansion dominated by the Higgs potential. However, the model predicts non-negligible anisotropic shear contributions nowadays, i.e. the current Universe can have hair although it will loose it in the future. We investigate the evolution of the equation of state for dark energy and highlight some possible consequences of its behaviour related to the process of large-scale structure formation. As a supplement, we propose the "Higgs triad" as a possibility to make the Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs model be consistent with a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime.

Generalized SU(2) Proca theory reconstructed and beyond

As a modified gravity theory that introduces new gravitational degrees of freedom, the generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P for short) is the non-Abelian version of the well-known generalized Proca theory where the action is invariant under global transformations of the SU(2) group. This theory was formulated for the first time in Phys. Rev. D 94 (2016) 084041, having implemented the required primary constraint-enforcing relation to make the Lagrangian degenerate and remove one degree of freedom from the vector field in accordance with the irreducible representations of the Poincar\'e group. It was later shown in Phys. Rev. D 101 (2020) 045008, ibid 045009, that a secondary constraint-enforcing relation, which trivializes for the generalized Proca theory but not for the SU(2) version, was needed to close the constraint algebra. It is the purpose of this paper to implement this secondary constraint-enforcing relation in GSU2P and to make the construction of the theory more transparent. Since several terms in the Lagrangian were dismissed in Phys. Rev. D 94 (2016) 084041 via their equivalence to other terms through total derivatives, not all of the latter satisfying the secondary constraint-enforcing relation, the work was not so simple as directly applying this relation to the resultant Lagrangian pieces of the old theory. Thus, we were motivated to reconstruct the theory from scratch. In the process, we found the beyond GSU2P.

Stability Conditions in the Generalized SU(2) Proca Theory

Under the same spirit of the Galileon-Horndeski theories and their more modern extensions, the generalized SU(2) Proca theory was built by demanding that its action may be free of the Ostrogradski's instability. Nevertheless, the theory must also be free of other instability problems in order to ensure its viability. As a first approach to address this issue, we concentrate on a quite general variant of the theory and investigate the general conditions for the absence of ghost and gradient instabilities in the tensor sector without the need for resolving the dynamical background. The phenomenological interest of this approach as well as of the variant investigated lies on the possibility of building cosmological models driven solely by non-Abelian vector fields that may account for a successful description of both the early inflation and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe.

A systematic procedure to build the beyond generalized Proca field theory

To date, different alternative theories of gravity, although related, involving Proca fields have been proposed. Unfortunately, the procedure to obtain the relevant terms in some formulations has not been systematic enough or exhaustive, thus resulting in some missing terms or ambiguity in the process carried out. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to build the beyond generalized theory for a Proca field in four dimensions containing only the field itself and its first-order derivatives. We examine the validity of our procedure at the fourth level of the generalized Proca theory. In our approach, we employ all the possible Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian pieces made of the Proca field and its first-order derivatives, including those that violate parity, and find the relevant combination that propagates only three degrees of freedom and has healthy dynamics for the longitudinal mode. The key step in our procedure is to retain the flat space-time divergences of the currents in the theory during the covariantization process. In the curved space-time theory, some of the retained terms are no longer current divergences so that they induce the new terms that identify the beyond generalized Proca field theory. The procedure constitutes a systematic method to build general theories for multiple vector fields with or without internal symmetries.

Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs dark energy revisited

Inspired in the Standard Model of Elementary Particles, the Einstein Yang-Mills Higgs action with the Higgs field in the SU(2) representation was proposed in Class. Quantum Grav. 32 (2015) 045002 as the element responsible for the dark energy phenomenon. We revisit this action emphasizing in a very important aspect not sufficiently explored in the original work and that substantially changes its conclusions. This aspect is the role that the Yang-Mills Higgs interaction plays at fixing the gauge for the Higgs field, in order to sustain a homogeneous and isotropic background, and at driving the late accelerated expansion of the Universe by moving the Higgs field away of the minimum of its potential and holding it towards an asymptotic finite value. We analyse the dynamical behaviour of this system and supplement this analysis with a numerical solution whose initial conditions are in agreement with the current observed values for the density parameters. This scenario represents a step towards a successful merging of cosmology and well-tested particle physics phenomenology.

Non-Abelian $S$-term dark energy and inflation

We study the role that a cosmic triad in the generalized $SU(2)$ Proca theory, specifically in one of the pieces of the Lagrangian that involves the symmetric version $S_{μν}$ of the gauge field strength tensor $F_{μν}$, has on dark energy and primordial inflation. Regarding dark energy, the triad behaves asymptotically as a couple of radiation perfect fluids whose energy densities are negative for the $S$ term but positive for the Yang-Mills term. This leads to an interesting dynamical fine-tuning mechanism that gives rise to a combined equation of state parameter $ω\simeq -1$ and, therefore, to an eternal period of accelerated isotropic expansion for an ample spectrum of initial conditions. Regarding primordial inflation, one of the critical points of the associated dynamical system can describe a prolonged period of isotropic slow-roll inflation sustained by the $S$ term. This period ends up when the Yang-Mills term dominates the energy density leading to the radiation dominated epoch. Unfortunately, in contrast to the dark energy case, the primordial inflation scenario is strongly sensitive to the coupling constants and initial conditions. The whole model, including the other pieces of the Lagrangian that involve $S_{μν}$, might evade the recent strong constraints coming from the gravitational wave signal GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A.

Scalar and vector Galileons

An alternative for the construction of fundamental theories is the introduction of Galileons. These are fields whose action leads to non higher than second-order equations of motion. As this is a necessary but not sufficient condition to make the Hamiltonian bounded from below, as long as the action is not degenerate, the Galileon construction is a way to avoid pathologies both at the classical and quantum levels. Galileon actions are, therefore, of great interest in many branches of physics, specially in high energy physics and cosmology. This proceedings contribution presents the generalities of the construction of both scalar and vector Galileons following two different but complimentary routes.

Generalized SU(2) Proca Theory

Following previous works on generalized Abelian Proca theory, also called vector Galileon, we investigate the massive extension of an SU(2) gauge theory, i.e., the generalized SU(2) Proca model, which could be dubbed non-Abelian vector Galileon. This particular symmetry group permits fruitful applications in cosmology such as inflation driven by gauge fields. Our approach consists in building, in an exhaustive way, all the Lagrangians containing up to six contracted Lorentz indices. For this purpose, and after identifying by group theoretical considerations all the independent Lagrangians which can be written at these orders, we consider the only linear combinations propagating three degrees of freedom and having healthy dynamics for their longitudinal mode, i.e., whose pure Stückelberg contribution turns into the SU(2) multi-Galileon dynamics. Finally, and after having considered the curved space-time expansion of these Lagrangians, we discuss the form of the theory at all subsequent orders.
