On amenability constants of Fourier algebras: new bounds and new examples

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. If $G$ is finite then the amenability constant of its Fourier algebra, denoted by ${\rm AM}({\rm A}(G))$, admits an explicit formula [Johnson, JLMS 1994]; if $G$ is infinite then no such formula for ${\rm AM}({\rm A}(G))$ is known, although lower and upper bounds were established by Runde [PAMS 2006]. Using non-abelian Fourier analysis, we obtain a sharper upper bound for ${\rm AM}({\rm A}(G))$ when $G$ is discrete. Combining this with previous work of the first author [Choi, IMRN 2023], we exhibit new examples of discrete groups and compact groups where ${\rm AM}({\rm A}(G))$ can be calculated explicitly; previously this was only known for groups that are products of finite groups with ``degenerate'' cases. Our new examples also provide additional evidence to support the conjecture that Runde's lower bound for the amenability constant is in fact an equality.

Small values and forbidden values for the Fourier antidiagonal constant of a finite group

For a finite group $G$, let ${\rm AD}(G)$ denote the Fourier norm of the antidiagonal in $G\times G$. It was shown recently by the author (IMRN, 2023) that ${\rm AD}(G)$ coincides with the amenability constant of the Fourier algebra of $G$, and is equal to the normalized sum of the cubes of character degrees of $G$. Motivated by a gap result for amenability constants due to Johnson (JLMS, 1994), we determine exactly which numbers in the interval $[1,2]$ arise as values of ${\rm AD}(G)$. As a by-product, we show that the set of values of ${\rm AD}(G)$ does not contain all its limit points. Some other calculations or bounds for ${\rm AD}(G)$ are given for familiar classes of finite groups. We also indicate a connection between ${\rm AD}(G)$ and the commuting probability of $G$, and use this to show that every finite group $G$ satisfying ${\rm AD}(G)< \frac{61}{15}$ must be solvable; here the value $\frac{61}{15}$ is best possible.

Constructing non-AMNM weighted convolution algebras for every semilattice of infinite breadth

The AMNM property for commutative Banach algebras is a form of Ulam stability for multiplicative linear functionals. We show that on any semilattice of infinite breadth, one may construct a weight for which the resulting weighted convolution algebra fails to have the AMNM property. Our work is the culmination of a trilogy started in [Semigroup Forum 102 (2021), no. 1, 86-103] and continued in [European J. Combin. 94 (2021), article 103311]. In particular, we obtain a refinement of the main result of the second paper, by establishing a dichotomy for union-closed set systems that has a Ramsey-theoretic flavour.

Approximately multiplicative maps between algebras of bounded operators on Banach spaces

We show that for any separable reflexive Banach space $X$ and a large class of Banach spaces $E$, including those with a subsymmetric shrinking basis but also all spaces $L_p$ for $1\leq p \leq \infty$, every bounded linear map ${\mathcal B}(E)\to {\mathcal B}(X)$ which is approximately multiplicative is necessarily close in the operator norm to some bounded homomorphism ${\mathcal B}(E)\to {\mathcal B}(X)$. That is, the pair $({\mathcal B}(E), {\mathcal B}(X))$ has the AMNM property in the sense of Johnson (\textit{J.~London Math.\ Soc.} 1988). Previously this was only known for $E=X=\ell_p$ with $1<p<\infty$; even for those cases, we improve on the previous methods and obtain better constants in various estimates. A crucial role in our approach is played by a new result, motivated by cohomological techniques, which establishes AMNM properties relative to an amenable subalgebra; this generalizes a theorem of Johnson (\textit{op cit.}).

Dual convolution for the affine group of the real line

The Fourier algebra of the affine group of the real line has a natural identification, as a Banach space, with the space of trace-class operators on $L^2({\mathbb R}^\times, dt/ |t|)$. In this paper we study the "dual convolution product" of trace-class operators that corresponds to pointwise product in the Fourier algebra. Answering a question raised in work of Eymard and Terp, we provide an intrinsic description of this operation which does not rely on the identification with the Fourier algebra, and obtain a similar result for the connected component of this affine group. In both cases we construct explicit derivations on the corresponding Banach algebras, verifying the derivation identity directly without requiring the inverse Fourier transform. We also initiate the study of the analogous Banach algebra structure for trace-class operators on $L^p({\mathbb R}^\times, dt/ |t|)$ for $p\in (1,2)\cup(2,\infty)$.

A short proof that ${\mathcal B}(L_1)$ is not amenable

Non-amenability of ${\mathcal B}(E)$ has been surprisingly difficult to prove for the classical Banach spaces, but is now known for $E= \ell_p$ and $E=L_p$ for all $1\leq p<\infty$. However, the arguments are rather indirect: the proof for $L_1$ goes via non-amenability of $\ell^\infty({\mathcal K}(\ell_1))$ and a transference principle developed by Daws and Runde (Studia Math., 2010). In this note, we provide a short proof that ${\mathcal B}(L_1)$ and some of its subalgebras are non-amenable, which completely bypasses all of this machinery. Our approach is based on classical properties of the ideal of representable operators on $L_1$, and shows that ${\mathcal B}(L_1)$ is not even approximately amenable.

Constructing alternating 2-cocycles on Fourier algebras

Building on recent progress in constructing derivations on Fourier algebras, we provide the first examples of locally compact groups whose Fourier algebras support non-zero, alternating 2-cocycles; this is the first step in a larger project. Although such 2-cocycles can never be completely bounded, the operator space structure on the Fourier algebra plays a crucial role in our construction, as does the opposite operator space structure. Our construction has two main technical ingredients: we observe that certain estimates from [H. H. Lee, J. Ludwig, E. Samei, N. Spronk, Weak amenability of Fourier algebras and local synthesis of the anti-diagonal, Adv. Math., 292 (2016); arXiv 1502.05214] yield derivations that are "co-completely bounded" as maps from various Fourier algebras to their duals; and we establish a twisted inclusion result for certain operator space tensor products, which may be of independent interest.

Rigidity results for $L^p$-operator algebras and applications

For $p\in [1,\infty)$, we show that every unital $L^p$-operator algebra contains a unique maximal $C^*$-subalgebra, which is always abelian if $p\neq 2$. Using this, we canonically associate to every unital $L^p$-operator algebra $A$ an \'etale groupoid $\mathcal{G}_A$, which in many cases of interest is a complete invariant for $A$. By identifying this groupoid for large classes of examples, we obtain a number of rigidity results that display a stark contrast with the case $p=2$; the most striking one being that of crossed products by topologically free actions. Our rigidity results give answers to questions concerning the existence of isomorphisms between different algebras. Among others, we show that for the $L^p$-analog $\mathcal{O}_2^p$ of the Cuntz algebra, there is no isometric isomorphism between $\mathcal{O}_2^p$ and $\mathcal{O}_2^p\otimes^p\mathcal{O}_2^p$, when $p\neq 2$. In particular, we deduce that there is no $L^p$-version of Kirchberg's absorption theorem, and that there is no $K$-theoretic classification of purely infinite simple amenable $L^p$-operator algebras for $p\neq 2$. Our methods also allow us to recover a folklore fact in the case of C*-algebras ($p=2$), namely that no isomorphism $\mathcal{O}_2^p\cong \mathcal{O}_2^p\otimes\mathcal{O}_2^p$ preserves the canonical Cartan subalgebras.

Stability of characters and filters for weighted semilattices

We continue the study of the AMNM property for weighted semilattices that was initiated in [Y. Choi, J. Austral. Math. Soc. 95 (2013), no. 1, 36-67; arXiv 1203.6691]. We reformulate this in terms of stability of filters with respect to a given weight function, and then provide a combinatorial condition which is necessary and sufficient for this "filter stability" property to hold. Examples are given to show that this new condition allows for easier and unified proofs of some results in [Choi, ibid.], and furthermore allows us to verify the AMNM property in situations not covered by the results of that paper. As a final application, we show that for a large class of semilattices, arising naturally as union-closed set systems, one can always construct weights for which the AMNM property fails.

Unavoidable subprojections in union-closed set systems of infinite breadth

We consider union-closed set systems with infinite breadth, focusing on three particular configurations ${\mathcal T}_{\rm max}(E)$, ${\mathcal T}_{\rm min}(E)$ and ${\mathcal T}_{\rm ort}(E)$. We show that these three configurations are not isolated examples; in any given union-closed set system of infinite breadth, at least one of these three configurations will occur as a subprojection. This characterizes those union-closed set systems which have infinite breadth, and is the first general structural result for such set systems.

A twisted inclusion between tensor products of operator spaces

Given operator spaces $V$ and $W$, let $\widetilde{W}$ denote the opposite operator space structure on the same underlying Banach space. Although the identity map $W\to \widetilde{W}$ is in general not completely bounded, we show that the identity map on $V\otimes W$ extends to a contractive linear map $V\widehat{\otimes} W \to V\otimes_{\min} \widetilde{W}$, where $\widehat{\otimes}$ and $\otimes_{\rm min}$ denote the projective and injective tensor products of operator spaces. In future work, this will be applied to construct antisymmetric $2$-cocycles on certain Fourier algebras.

Triviality of the generalized Lau product associated to a Banach algebra homomorphism

Several papers have, as their raison d'etre, the exploration of the \emph{generalized Lau product} associated to a homomorphism $T:B\to A$ of Banach algebras. In this short note, we demonstrate that the generalized Lau product is isomorphic as a Banach algebra to the usual direct product $A\oplus B$. We also correct some misleading claims made about the relationship between this generalized Lau product, and an older construction of Monfared (Studia Mathematica, 2007).

Realization of compact spaces as cb-Helson sets

We show that, given a compact Hausdorff space $Ω$, there is a compact group ${\mathbb G}$ and a homeomorphic embedding of $Ω$ into ${\mathbb G}$, such that the restriction map ${\rm A}({\mathbb G})\to C(Ω)$ is a complete quotient map of operator spaces. In particular, this shows that there exist compact groups which contain infinite cb-Helson subsets, answering a question raised in [Choi--Samei, Proc. AMS 2013; cf. http://arxiv.org/abs/1104.2953]. A negative result from the same paper is also improved.

A gap theorem for the ZL-amenability constant of a finite group

It was shown in [A. Azimifard, E. Samei, N. Spronk, JFA 2009; arxiv 0805.3685] that the ZL-amenability constant of a finite group is always at least 1, with equality if and only if the group is abelian. It was also shown in the same paper that for any finite non-abelian group this invariant is at least 301/300, but the proof relies crucially on a deep result of D. A. Rider on norms of central idempotents in group algebras. Here we show that if G is finite and non-abelian then its ZL-amenability constant is at least 7/4, which is known to be best possible. We avoid use of Rider's result, by analyzing the cases where G is just non-abelian, using calculations from [M. Alaghmandan, Y. Choi, E. Samei, CMB 2014; arxiv 1302.1929], and establishing a new estimate for groups with trivial centre.

Weak amenability for Fourier algebras of 1-connected nilpotent Lie groups

A special case of a conjecture raised by Forrest and Runde (Math. Zeit., 2005) asserts that the Fourier algebra of every non-abelian connected Lie group fails to be weakly amenable; this was aleady known to hold in the non-abelian compact cases, by earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) and Plymen (unpublished note). In recent work (JFA, 2014) the present authors verified this conjecture for the real ax+b group and hence, by structure theory, for any semisimple Lie group. In this paper we verify the conjecture for all 1-connected, non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups, by reducing the problem to the case of the Heisenberg group. As in our previous paper, an explicit non-zero derivation is constructed on a dense subalgebra, and then shown to be bounded using harmonic analysis. En route, we use the known fusion rules for Schrödinger representations to give a concrete realization of the "dual convolution" for this group as a kind of twisted, operator-valued convolution. We also give some partial results for solvable groups which give further evidence to support the general conjecture.

Directly finite algebras of pseudofunctions on locally compact groups

An algebra $A$ is said to be directly finite if each left invertible element in the (conditional) unitization of $A$ is right invertible. We show that the reduced group ${\rm C}^\ast$-algebra of a unimodular group is directly finite, extending known results for the discrete case. We also investigate the corresponding problem for algebras of $p$-pseudofunctions, showing that these algebras are directly finite if $G$ is amenable and unimodular, or unimodular with the Kunze--Stein property. An exposition is also given of how existing results from the literature imply that $L^1(G)$ is not directly finite when $G$ is the affine group of either the real or complex line.

Extension of derivations, and Connes-amenability of the enveloping dual Banach algebra

If $D:A \to X$ is a derivation from a Banach algebra to a contractive, Banach $A$-bimodule, then one can equip $X^{**}$ with an $A^{**}$-bimodule structure, such that the second transpose $D^{**}: A^{**} \to X^{**}$ is again a derivation. We prove an analogous extension result, where $A^{**}$ is replaced by $\F(A)$, the \emph{enveloping dual Banach algebra} of $A$, and $X^{**}$ by an appropriate kind of universal, enveloping, normal dual bimodule of $X$. Using this, we obtain some new characterizations of Connes-amenability of $\F(A)$. In particular we show that $\F(A)$ is Connes-amenable if and only if $A$ admits a so-called WAP-virtual diagonal. We show that when $A=L^1(G)$, existence of a WAP-virtual diagonal is equivalent to the existence of a virtual diagonal in the usual sense. Our approach does not involve invariant means for $G$.

Weak and cyclic amenability for Fourier algebras of connected Lie groups

Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our techniques, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the reduced Heisenberg group, providing the first example of a connected nilpotent group whose Fourier algebra is not weakly amenable.
