Charge Loss (or the Lack Thereof) for AdS Black Holes

The evolution of evaporating charged black holes is complicated to model in general, but is nevertheless important since the hints to the Information Loss Paradox and its recent firewall incarnation may lie in understanding more generic geometries than that of Schwarzschild spacetime. Fortunately, for sufficiently large asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, the evaporation process can be modeled via a system of coupled linear ordinary differential equations, with charge loss rate governed by Schwinger pair-production process. The same model can be generalized to study the evaporation of AdS Reissner-Nordstrom black holes with flat horizon. It was recently found that such black holes always evolve towards extremality since charge loss is inefficient. This property is completely opposite to the asymptotically flat case in which the black hole eventually loses its charges and tends towards Schwarzschild limit. We clarify the underlying reason for this different behavior.

Acausality and Nonunique Evolution in Generalized Teleparallel Gravity

We show the existence of physical superluminal modes and acausality in the Brans-Dicke type of extension of teleparallel gravity that includes F(T) gravity and teleparallel dark energy as special cases. We derive the characteristic hypersurface for the extra degrees of freedom in the theory, thereby showing that the time evolution is not unique and closed causal curves can appear. Furthermore, we present a concrete disastrous solution in Bianchi type I spacetime, in which the anisotropy in expansion can be any function of time, and thus anisotropy can emerge suddenly, a simple demonstration that the theory is physically problematic.

An Analysis of Characteristics in Non-Linear Massive Gravity

We study the Cauchy problem in a special case of non-linear massive gravity: the two-tensor "f-g" theory. Despite being ghost-free, it has recently been argued that the theory is inherently problematic due to the existence of superluminal shock waves. Furthermore it is claimed that acausal characteristic can arise for any choice of background. In order to further understand the causal structure of the theory, we carefully perform a detailed analysis of the characteristic equations and show that the theory does admit a well-posed Cauchy problem, i.e., there exist hypersurfaces that are not characteristic hypersurface. Puzzles remain regarding the existence of a superluminal propagating mode in both the f-g theory, as well as in the full non-linear massive gravity. That is, our result should not be taken as any indication of the healthiness of the theory. We also give a detailed review of Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem and its application in the Appendix, which should be useful for investigating causal structures of other theories of gravity.

The Fate of Monsters in Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

Black hole entropy remains a deep puzzle: where does such enormous amount of entropy come from? Curiously, there exist gravitational configurations that possess even larger entropy than a black hole of the same mass, in fact, arbitrarily high entropy. These are the so-called monsters, which are problematic to the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence paradigm since there is far insufficient degrees of freedom on the field theory side to account for the enormous entropy of monsters in AdS bulk. The physics of the bulk however may be considerably modified at semi-classical level due to the presence of branes. We show that this is especially so since monster spacetimes are unstable due to brane nucleation. As a consequence, it is not clear what the final fate of monsters is. We argue that in some cases there is no real threat from monsters since although they are solutions to Einstein's Field Equations, they are very likely to be completely unstable when embedded in string theory, and thus probably are not solutions to the full quantum theory of gravity. Our analysis, while suggestive and supportive of the claim that such pathological objects are not allowed in the final theory, by itself does not rule out all monsters. We comment on various kin of monsters such as the bag-of-gold spacetime, and also discuss briefly the implications of our work to some puzzles related to black hole entropy.

Problems with Propagation and Time Evolution in f(T) Gravity

Teleparallel theories of gravity have a long history. They include a special case referred to as the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR, aka GR$_{\|}$). Recently this theory has been generalized to f(T) gravity. Tight constraints from observations suggest that f(T) gravity is not as robust as initially hoped. This might hint at hitherto undiscovered problems at the theoretical level. In this work, we point out that a generic f(T) theory can be expected to have certain problems including superluminal propagating modes, the presence of which can be revealed by using the characteristic equations that govern the dynamics in f(T) gravity and/or the Hamiltonian structure of the theory via Dirac constraint analysis. We use several examples from simpler gauge field theories to explain how such superluminal modes could arise. We also point out problems with the Cauchy development of a constant time hypersurface in FLRW spacetime in f(T) gravity. The time evolution from a FLRW (and as a special case, Minkowski spacetime) initial condition is not unique.

Cosmological Perturbation in f(T) Gravity Revisited

We perform detailed investigation of cosmological perturbations in f(T) theory of gravity coupled with scalar field. Our work emphasizes on the way to gauge fix the theory and we examine all possible modes of perturbations up to second order. The analysis includes pseudoscalar and pseudovector modes in addition to the usual scalar, vector, and tensor modes. We find no gravitational propagating degree of freedom in the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, as well as pseudovector modes. In addition, we find that the scalar and tensor perturbations have exactly the same form as their counterparts in usual general relativity with scalar field, except that the factor of reduced Planck mass squared $M_{\text{pl}}^2 \equiv 1/(8πG)$ that occurs in the latter has now been replaced by an effective time-dependentgravitational coupling $-2 (df/dT)|_{T=T_0}$, with $T_0$ being the background torsion scalar. The absence of extra degrees of freedom of f(T) gravity at second order linear perturbation indicates that f(T) gravity is highly nonlinear. Consequently one cannot conclusively analyze stability of the theory without performing nonlinear analysis that can reveal the propagation of the extra degrees of freedom.

Seiberg-Witten Instability of Various Topological Black Holes

We review the Seiberg-Witten instability of topological black holes in Anti-de Sitter space due to nucleation of brane-anti-brane pairs. We start with black holes in general relativity, and then proceed to discuss the peculiar property of topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity -- they have instabilities that occur at only finite range of distance away from the horizon. This behavior is not unique to black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz theory, as it is also found in the relatively simple systems of charged black hole with dilaton hair that arise in low energy limit of string theory.

Stability of Horava-Lifshitz Black Holes in the Context of AdS/CFT

The anti--de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence is a powerful tool that promises to provide new insights toward a full understanding of field theories under extreme conditions, including but not limited to quark-gluon plasma, Fermi liquid and superconductor. In many such applications, one typically models the field theory with asymptotically AdS black holes. These black holes are subjected to stringy effects that might render them unstable. Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, in which space and time undergo different transformations, has attracted attentions due to its power-counting renormalizability. In terms of AdS/CFT correspondence, Hořava-Lifshitz black holes might be useful to model holographic superconductors with Lifshitz scaling symmetry. It is thus interesting to study the stringy stability of Hořava-Lifshitz black holes in the context of AdS/CFT. We find that uncharged topological black holes in $λ=1$ Hořava-Lifshitz theory are nonperturbatively stable, unlike their counterparts in Einstein gravity, with the possible exceptions of negatively curved black holes with detailed balance parameter $ε$ close to unity. Sufficiently charged flat black holes for $ε$ close to unity, and sufficiently charged positively curved black holes with $ε$ close to zero, are also unstable. The implication to the Hořava-Lifshitz holographic superconductor is discussed.

Stringy Stability of Dilaton Black Holes in 5-Dimensional Anti-de Sitter Space

Flat electrical charged black holes in 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space have been applied to the study of the phase diagram of quark matter via AdS/CFT correspondence. In such application it is argued that since the temperature of the quark gluon plasma is bounded away from zero, the dual black hole cannot be arbitrarily cold, but becomes unstable due to stringy instability once it reaches sufficiently low temperature. We study the stringy stability of flat dilaton black holes with dilaton coupling $α=1$ in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space and show that unlike the purely electrically charged black hole, these dilaton black holes do not suffer from stringy instability.
