Time-Frequency Grid States for Reconstruction and Correction of Channel-Induced Distortion in Entangled Photons

Characterization of time-frequency (TF) quantum states requires reliable reconstruction of their TF distributions. However, imperfect transmission or measurement channels can distort reconstructed joint spectral intensities (JSIs), especially when the underlying perturbation mechanism is unknown. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a reconstruction and correction framework that uses a TF grid state as an intrinsic frequency-domain reference. By analyzing the displacement of the grid points, a Gaussian process regression model is employed to reconstruct a correction mapping for the nonlinear coordinate deformation without assuming a prior physical model of the distortion. The learned mapping reduces the residual coordinate deviation of the TF grid state by approximately a factor of 11 and, when applied to an independent frequency-entangled test state, improves the Gaussian-shape fidelity from 76.2\% to 90.0\%. These results establish TF grid states as practical metrological resources for diagnosing and correcting distortions in TF quantum systems, providing a pathway toward distortion-resilient quantum communication and high-dimensional quantum information processing.

Observation and Manipulation of Optical Parametric Down-Conversion in the Langevin Regime

Quantum fluctuation plays a key role in the parametric down-conversion in the Langevin regime. In this paper, we report the experimental realization of optical parametric down-conversion in the Langevin regime on a chip. By precisely controlling the loss inherently tied to fluctuation, we observe the asymmetric Hong-Ou-Mandel dip - a hallmark of quantum fluctuation in the fluctuation-driven PDC, and the fluctuation-induced compression of single photons by nearly one order of magnitude. These findings pave the way for the manipulation of quantum fluctuation, quantum states, and system-reservoir interaction.

Harnessing Hybrid Frequency-Entangled Qudits through Quantum Interference

High-dimensional (HD) quantum entanglement expands the Hilbert space, offering a robust framework for quantum information processing with enhanced capacity and error resilience. In this work, we present a novel HD frequency-domain entangled state, the hybrid frequency-entangled qudit (HFEQ), generated via Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference, exhibiting both discrete-variable (DV) and continuous-variable (CV) characteristics in the frequency domain. By tuning HOM interference, we generate and control HFEQs with dimensions $D=5,7,9,11, confirming their DV nature. Franson interferometry confirms the global frequency correlations with visibility exceeding 98% and verifies the CV entanglement within individual frequency modes with visibility greater than 95%. Our findings provide deeper insight into the physical nature of frequency-entangled qudits generated by quantum interference and introduce a novel resource for HD time-frequency quantum information processing.

Spectral mapping of polarization-correlated photon-pair sources using quantum-classical correspondence

Direct spectral characterization of a quantum photon-pair source usually involves cumbersome, costly, and time-consuming detection issues. In this study, we experimentally characterize the spectral properties of a type-II phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source based on a titanium-diffused periodically poled lithium niobate (Ti:PPLN) waveguide. The characterization of the spectral information of the generated cross-polarized photon pairs is of importance for the use of such sources in applications including quantum information and communication. We demonstrate that the joint spectral intensity of the cross-polarized photon-pair source can be fully reconstructed using the quantum-classical correspondence through classical sum-frequency generation (SFG) measurements. This technique, which uses a much less complex detection system for visible light, opens the possibility of fast monitoring and control of the quantum state of (polarization-correlated) photon-pair sources to facilitate the realization of a stable and high-usability quantum source.

Quantum metasurface for multi-photon interference and state reconstruction

Metasurfaces based on resonant nanophotonic structures have enabled novel types of flat-optics devices often outperforming the capabilities of bulk components, yet these advances remain largely unexplored for quantum applications. We show that non-classical multi-photon interferences can be achieved at the subwavelength scale in all-dielectric metasurfaces. We simultaneously image multiple projections of quantum states with a single metasurface, enabling a robust reconstruction of amplitude, phase, coherence, and entanglement of multi-photon polarization-encoded states. One- and two-photon states are reconstructed through nonlocal photon correlation measurements with polarization-insensitive click-detectors positioned after the metasurface, and the scalability to higher photon numbers is established theoretically. Our work illustrates the feasibility of ultra-thin quantum metadevices for the manipulation and measurement of multi-photon quantum states with applications in free-space quantum imaging and communications.

Efficient supercontinuum generation in quadratic nonlinear waveguides without quasi-phase matching

Efficient supercontinuum generation (SCG) requires excitation of solitons at the pump laser wavelength. Quadratic nonlinear waveguides may support an effective self-defocusing nonlinearity so solitons can directly be generated at common ultrafast laser wavelengths without any waveguide dispersion engineering. We here experimentally demonstrate efficient SCG in a standard lithium niobate (LN) waveguide without using quasi-phase matching (QPM). By using femtosecond pumps with wavelengths in the $1.25-1.5 μ\rm m$ range, where LN has normal dispersion and thus supports self-defocusing solitons, octave-spanning SCG is observed. An optimized mid-IR waveguide design is expected to support even broader spectra. The QPM-free design reduces production complexity, allows longer waveguides, limits undesired spectral resonances and effectively allows using nonlinear crystals where QPM is inefficient or impossible. This result is important for mid-IR SCG, where QPM-free self-defocusing waveguides in common mid-IR nonlinear crystals can support solitons directly at mid-IR ultrafast laser wavelengths, where these waveguides have normal dispersion.
