Interference Mitigation Using Dynamic Frequency Re-use for Dense Femtocell Network Architectures

The next generation network aims to efficiently deploy low cost and low power cellular base station in the subscriber's home environment. For the femtocell deployment, frequency allocation among femtocells and macrocell is big concern to mitigate the interference, and to ensure the best use of the expensive spectrum. There are many sources of interference in integrated femtocell/macrocell networks. Lagging in proper management of interference reduces the system capacity, increases the outage probability, and finally users feel bad quality of experience (QoE). The cost effective interference management technique depends on the size of femtocells deployment. In this paper, firstly we present deployable various possible femtocell network scenarios. We propose the dynamic frequency re-use scheme to mitigate interference for femtocell deployment. For highly dense femtocells, we propose the functionalities of self organizing network (SON) based femtocell network architecture. The outage probability of a femtocell user is analyzed in details. The performances of the proposed schemes for various femtocell deployments are performed using numerical analysis.

Group Handover Management in Mobile Femtocellular Network Deployment

The mobile femtocell is the new paradigm for the femtocellular network deployment. It can enhance the service quality for the users inside the vehicles. The deployment of mobile femtocells generates lot of handover calls. Also, number of group handover scenarios are found in mobile femtocellular network deployment. In this paper, we focus on the resource management for the group handover in mobile femtocellular network deployment. We discuss a number of group handover scenarios. We propose a resource management scheme that contains bandwidth adaptation policy and dynamic bandwidth reservation policy. The simulation results show that the proposed bandwidth management scheme significantly reduces the handover call dropping probability without reducing the bandwidth utilization.

Bandwidth Adaptation for Scalable Videos over Wireless Networks

Multicast/broadcast services (MBS) are able to provide video services for many users simultaneously. Fixed amount of bandwidth allocation for all of the MBS videos is not effective in terms of bandwidth utilization, overall forced call termination probability, and handover call dropping probability. Therefore, variable bandwidth allocation for the MBS videos can efficiently improve the system performance. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth allocation scheme that efficiently allocates bandwidth among the MBS sessions and the non-MBS traffic calls (e.g., voice, unicast, internet, and other background traffic). The proposed scheme reduces the bandwidth allocation for the MBS sessions during the congested traffic condition only to accommodate more number of calls in the system. Our scheme allocates variable amount of bandwidths for the BMS sessions and the non-MBS traffic calls. The performance analyses show that the proposed bandwidth adaptation scheme maximizes the bandwidth utilization and significantly reduces the handover call dropping probability and overall forced call termination probability.

A New Vehicle Localization Scheme Based on Combined Optical Camera Communication and Photogrammetry

The demand for autonomous vehicles is increasing gradually owing to their enormous potential benefits. However, several challenges, such as vehicle localization, are involved in the development of autonomous vehicles. A simple and secure algorithm for vehicle positioning is proposed herein without massively modifying the existing transportation infrastructure. For vehicle localization, vehicles on the road are classified into two categories: host vehicles (HVs) are the ones used to estimate other vehicles' positions and forwarding vehicles (FVs) are the ones that move in front of the HVs. The FV transmits modulated data from the tail (or back) light, and the camera of the HV receives that signal using optical camera communication (OCC). In addition, the streetlight (SL) data are considered to ensure the position accuracy of the HV. Determining the HV position minimizes the relative position variation between the HV and FV. Using photogrammetry, the distance between FV or SL and the camera of the HV is calculated by measuring the occupied image area on the image sensor. Comparing the change in distance between HV and SLs with the change in distance between HV and FV, the positions of FVs are determined. The performance of the proposed technique is analyzed, and the results indicate a significant improvement in performance. The experimental distance measurement validated the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

A Novel Indoor Mobile Localization System Based on Optical Camera Communication

Localizing smartphones in indoor environments offers excellent opportunities for e-commerce. In this paper, we propose a localization technique for smartphones in indoor environments. This technique can calculate the coordinates of a smartphone using existing illumination infrastructure with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The system can locate smartphones without further modification of the existing LED light infrastructure. Smartphones do not have fixed position and they may move frequently anywhere in an environment. Our algorithm uses multiple (i.e., more than two) LED lights simultaneously. The smartphone gets the LED-IDs from the LED lights that are within the field of view (FOV) of the smartphone's camera. These LED-IDs contain the coordinate information of the LED lights. Concurrently, the pixel area on the image sensor (IS) of projected image changes with the relative motion between the smartphone and each LED light which allows the algorithm to calculate the distance from the smartphone to that LED.

Survey of Promising Technologies for 5G Networks

As an enhancement of cellular networks, the future-generation 5G network can be considered an ultra-high-speed technology. The proposed 5G network might include all types of advanced dominant technologies to provide remarkable services. Consequently, new architectures and service management schemes for different applications of the emerging technologies need to be recommended to solve issues related to data traffic capacity, high data rate, and reliability for ensuring QoS. Cloud computing, Internet of things (IoT), and software-defined networking (SDN) have become some of the core technologies for the 5G network. Cloud-based services provide flexible and efficient solutions for information and communications technology by reducing the cost of investing in and managing information technology infrastructure. In terms of functionality, SDN is a promising architecture that decouples control planes and data planes to support programmability, adaptability, and flexibility in ever-changing network architectures. Performance analysis of smart digital signage system based on software-defined IoT and invisible image sensor communication

Everything in the world is being connected, and things are becoming interactive. The future of the interactive world depends on the future Internet of Things (IoT). Software-defined networking (SDN) technology, a new paradigm in the networking area, can be useful in creating an IoT because it can handle interactivity by controlling physical devices, transmission of data among them, and data acquisition. However, digital signage can be one of the promising technologies in this era of technology that is progressing toward the interactive world, connecting users to the IoT network through device-to-device communication technology. This article illustrates a novel prototype that is mainly focused on a smart digital signage system comprised of software-defined IoT (SD-IoT) and invisible image sensor communication technology. We have proposed an SDN scheme with a view to initiating its flexibility and compatibility for an IoT network-based smart digital signage system. The idea of invisible communication can make the users of the technology trendier to it, and the usage of unused resources such as images and videos can be ensured. In addition, this communication has paved the way for interactivity between the user and digital signage, where the digital signage and the camera of a smartphone can be operated as a transmitter and a receiver, respectively. The proposed scheme might be applicable to real-world applications because SDN has the flexibility to adapt with the alteration of network status without any hardware modifications while displays and smartphones are available everywhere. A performance analysis of this system showed the advantages of an SD-IoT network over an Internet protocol-based IoT network considering a queuing analysis for a dynamic link allocation process in the case of user access to the IoT network.

Design and Implementation of a Novel Compatible Encoding Scheme in the Time Domain for Image Sensor Communication

This paper presents a modulation scheme in the time domain based on On-Off-Keying and proposes various compatible supports for different types of image sensors. The content of this article is a sub-proposal to the IEEE 802.15.7r1 Task Group (TG7r1) aimed at Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) using an image sensor as the receiver. The compatibility support is indispensable for Image Sensor Communications (ISC) because the rolling shutter image sensors currently available have different frame rates, shutter speeds, sampling rates, and resolutions. However, focusing on unidirectional communications (i.e., data broadcasting, beacons), an asynchronous communication prototype is also discussed in the paper. Due to the physical limitations associated with typical image sensors (including low and varying frame rates, long exposures, and low shutter speeds), the link speed performance is critically considered. Based on the practical measurement of camera response to modulated light, an operating frequency range is suggested along with the similar system architecture, decoding procedure, and algorithms. A significant feature of our novel data frame structure is that it can support both typical frame rate cameras (in the oversampling mode) as well as very low frame rate cameras (in the error detection mode for a camera whose frame rate is lower than the transmission packet rate). A high frame rate camera, i.e., no less than 20 fps, is supported in an oversampling mode in which a majority voting scheme for decoding data is applied. A low frame rate camera, i.e., when the frame rate drops to less than 20 fps at some certain time, is supported by an error detection mode in which any missing data sub-packet is detected in decoding and later corrected by external code. Numerical results and valuable analysis are also included to indicate the capability of the proposed schemes.

Quality-Aware Popularity Based Bandwidth Allocation for Scalable Video Broadcast over Wireless Access Networks

Video broadcast/multicast over wireless access networks is an attractive research issue in the field of wireless communication. With the rapid improvement of various wireless network technologies, it is now possible to provide high quality video transmission over wireless networks. The high quality video streams need higher bandwidth. Hence, during the video transmission through wireless networks, it is very important to make the best utilization of the limited bandwidth. Therefore, when many broadcasting video sessions are active, the bandwidth per video session can be allocated based on popularity of the video sessions (programs). Instead of allocating equal bandwidth to each of them, our proposed scheme allocates bandwidth per broadcasting video session based on popularity of the video program. When the system bandwidth is not sufficient to allocate the demanded bandwidth for all the active video sessions, our proposed scheme efficiently allocates the total system bandwidth among all the scalable active video sessions in such a way that higher bandwidth is allocated to higher popularity one. Using the mathematical and simulation analyses, we show that the proposed scheme maximizes the average user satisfaction level and achieves the best utilization of bandwidth. The simulation results indicate that a large number of subscribers can receive a significantly improved quality of video. To improve the video quality for large number of subscribers, the only tradeoff is that a very few subscribers receive slightly degraded video quality.

Radio Resource Management Based on Reused Frequency Allocation for Dynamic Channel Borrowing Scheme in Wireless Networks

In the modern era, cellular communication consumers are exponentially increasing as they find the system more user-friendly. Due to enormous users and their numerous demands, it has become a mandate to make the best use of the limited radio resources that assures the highest standard of Quality of Service (QoS). To reach the guaranteed level of QoS for the maximum number of users, maximum utilization of bandwidth is not only the key issue to be considered, rather some other factors like interference, call blocking probability etc. are also needed to keep under deliberation. The lower performances of these factors may retrograde the overall cellular networks performances. Keeping these difficulties under consideration, we propose an effective dynamic channel borrowing model that safeguards better QoS, other factors as well. The proposed scheme reduces the excessive overall call blocking probability and does interference mitigation without sacrificing bandwidth utilization. The proposed scheme is modeled in such a way that the cells are bifurcated after the channel borrowing process if the borrowed channels have the same type of frequency band (i.e. reused frequency). We also propose that the unoccupied interfering channels of adjacent cells can also be inactivated, instead of cell bifurcation for interference mitigation. The simulation endings show satisfactory performances in terms of overall call blocking probability and bandwidth utilization that are compared to the conventional scheme without channel borrowing. Furthermore, signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) level, capacity, and outage probability are compared to the conventional scheme without interference mitigation after channel borrowing that may attract the considerable concentration to the operators.

Neighbor Cell List Optimization for Femtocell-to-Femtocell Handover in Dense Femtocellular Networks

Dense femtocells are the ultimate goal of the femtocellular network deployment. Among three types of handovers: femtocell-to-macrocell, macrocell-to-femtocell, and femtocell-to-femtocell, the latter two are the main concern for the dense femtocellular network deployment. For these handover cases, minimum as well appropriate neighbor cell list is the key element for the successful handover. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to make minimum but appropriate number of neighbor femtocell list for the femtocell-to-femtocell handover. Our algorithm considers received signal level from femto APs (FAPs); open and close access cases; and detected frequencyfrom the neighbor femtocells. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to attain minimum but optimal number of neighbor femtocell list for the possible femtocell-to-femtocell handover.

Call Admission Control based on Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation for Multi-Class Services in Wireless Networks

Due to the fact that Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are not as stringent for non-real-time traffic types, as opposed to real-time traffic, more calls can be accommodated by releasing some bandwidth from the existing non-real-time traffic calls. If the released bandwidth to accept a handover call is larger than to accept a new call, then the probability of dropping a call is smaller than the probability of blocking a call. In this paper we propose an efficient Call Admission Control (CAC) that relies on adaptive multi-level bandwidth-allocation scheme for non-real-time calls. The features of the scheme allow reduction of the call dropping probability along with the increase of the bandwidth utilization. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme is able to attain negligible handover call dropping probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization.

Dynamic SLA Negotiation using Bandwidth Broker for Femtocell Networks

Satisfaction level of femtocell users' depends on the availability of requested bandwidth. But the xDSL line that can be used for the backhauling of femtocell traffic cannot always provide sufficient bandwidth due to the inequality between the xDSL capacity and demanded bandwidth of home applications like, IPTV, PC, WiFi, and others. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) between xDSL and femtocell operator (mobile operator) to reserve some bandwidth for the upcoming femtocell calls can increase the satisfaction level for femtocell users. In this paper we propose a SLA negotiation procedure for femtocell networks. The Bandwidth Broker controls the allocated bandwidth for femtocell users. Then we propose the dynamically reserve bandwidth scheme to increase the femtocell user's satisfaction level. Finally, we present our simulation results to validate the proposed scheme.

Priority based Bandwidth Adaptation for Multi-class Traffic in Wireless Networks

The bandwidth adaptation is the technique that allows the flexibility in bandwidth allocation for a call. Using the bandwidth adaptation technique, the number of call admission in the system can be increased significantly. In this paper we propose a priority based bandwidth adaptation scheme that can release multi-level of bandwidth from the existing calls to accept call requests. The amount of released bandwidth is based on the number of existing bandwidth adaptive calls and the priority of requesting traffic call. This priority scheme does not reduce the bandwidth utilization. Moreover, the proposed bandwidth adaptation strategy provides significantly reduced call blocking probability for the higher priority traffic calls. The performance analyses show the improvement of the proposed scheme.

Handover Call Admission Control for Mobile Femtocells with Free-Space Optical and Macrocellular Backbone Networks

The deployment of mobile femtocellular networks can enhance the service quality for the users inside the vehicles. The deployment of mobile femtocells generates a lot of handover calls. Also, numbers of group handover scenarios are found in mobile femtocellular network deployment. The ability to seamlessly switch between the femtocells and the macrocell networks is a key concern for femtocell network deployment. However, until now there is no effective and complete handover scheme for the mobile femtocell network deployment. Also handover between the backhaul networks is a major concern for the mobile femtocellular network deployment. In this paper, we propose handover control between the access networks for the individual handover cases. Call flows for the handover between the backhaul networks of the macrocell-to-macrocell case are proposed in this paper. We also propose the link switching for the FSO based backhaul networks. The proposed resource allocation scheme ensures the negligible handover call dropping probability as well as higher bandwidth utilization.

Cost-Effective Frequency Planning for Capacity Enhancement of Femtocellular Networks

Femtocellular networks will co-exist with macrocellular networks, mitigation of the interference between these two network types is a key challenge for successful integration of these two technologies. In particular, there are several interference mechanisms between the femtocellular and the macrocellular networks, and the effects of the resulting interference depend on the density of femtocells and the overlaid macrocells in a particular coverage area. While improper interference management can cause a significant reduction in the system capacity and can increase the outage probability, effective and efficient frequency allocation among femtocells and macrocells can result in a successful co-existence of these two technologies. Furthermore, highly dense femtocellular deployments the ultimate goal of the femtocellular technology will require significant degree of self-organization in lieu of manual configuration. In this paper, we present various femtocellular network deployment scenarios, and we propose a number of frequency-allocation schemes to mitigate the interference and to increases the spectral efficiency of the integrated network. These schemes include: shared frequency band, dedicated frequency band, sub-frequency band, static frequency-reuse, and dynamic frequency-reuse.

Radio Resource Allocation for Scalable Video Services over Wireless Cellular Networks

Good quality video services always require higher bandwidth. Hence, to provide the video services e.g., multicast/broadcast services (MBS) and unicast services along with the existing voice, internet, and other background traffic services over the wireless cellular networks, it is required to efficiently manage the wireless resources in order to reduce the overall forced call termination probability, to maximize the overall service quality, and to maximize the revenue. Fixed bandwidth allocation for the MBS sessions either reduces the quality of the MBS videos and bandwidth utilization or increases the overall forced call termination probability and of course the handover call dropping probability as well. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) technique allows the variable bit rate allocation for the video services. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth allocation scheme that efficiently allocates bandwidth among the MBS sessions and the non-MBS traffic calls (e.g., voice, unicast, internet, and other background traffic). The proposed scheme reduces the bandwidth allocation for the MBS sessions during the congested traffic condition only to accommodate more calls in the system. Instead of allocating fixed bandwidths for the BMS sessions and the non-MBS traffic, our scheme allocates variable bandwidths for them. However, the minimum quality of the videos is guaranteed by allocating minimum bandwidth for them. Using the mathematical and numerical analyses, we show that the proposed scheme maximizes the bandwidth utilization and significantly reduces the overall forced call termination probability as well as the handover call dropping probability.
