Exceptional poles of archimedean Rankin-Selberg L-functions for irreducible generic representations of GL(n,R)

For irreducible generic representations $π_1$ and $π_2$ of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb R)$, we prove that the notions of exceptional pole of type $1$ and type $2$ coincide at every level. When both representations are in general position, we use this identification to express the Rankin--Selberg $L$-function $L(s,π_1\timesπ_2)$ in terms of the exceptional $L$-factors attached to the irreducible constituents of their derivatives.

Finite-Sum Realization of Archimedean Asai and Exterior-Square $L$-Factors

We prove that the archimedean Asai $L$-factor attached to an irreducible generic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ can be expressed as a finite sum of Flicker local zeta integrals. For an archimedean local field $F$, we also prove that the exterior-square $L$-factor attached to an irreducible generic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_m(F)$ can be expressed as a finite sum of Jacquet--Shalika local zeta integrals.

The local converse theorem for odd special orthogonal and symplectic groups in positive characteristic

Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from $2$ and $G$ be either an odd special orthogonal group ${\rm SO}_{2r+1}(F)$ or a symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2r}(F)$. In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem for $G$. Namely, for given two irreducible admissible generic representations of $G$ with the same central character, if they have the same local gamma factors twisted by irreducible supercuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ for all $1 \leq n \leq r$ with the same additive character, these representations are isomorphic. Using the theory of Cogdell, Shahidi, and Tsai on partial Bessel functions and the classification of irreducible generic representations, we break the barrier on the rank of twists $1 \leq n \leq 2r-1$ in the work of Jiang and Soudry, and extend the result of Q. Zhang, which was achieved for all supercuspidal representations in characteristic $0$.

Petersson Inner Products and Whittaker--Fourier Periods on Even Special Orthogonal and Symplectic Groups

In this article, we would like to formulate a relation between the square norm of Whittaker--Fourier coefficients on even special orthogonal and symplectic groups and Petersson inner products along with the critical value of $L$-functions up to constants. We follow the path of Lapid and Mao to reduce it to the conjectural local identity. Our strategy is based on the work of Ginzburg--Rallis--Soudry on automorphic descent. We present the analogue result for odd special orthogonal groups, which is conditional on unfolding Whittaker functions of descents.

Local coefficients and Gelfand-Graev representations for non-split covers on SL(2)

A purely local approach has been developed by Krishnamurthy and Kutzko to compute Langlands-Shahidi local coefficient for ${\rm SL}(2)$ via types and covers à la Bushnell-Kutzko. In this paper, we extend their method to the non-split case and complete their project. We also study the algebraic structure of Gelfand-Graev representations, which generalizes the results of Chan-Savin and Mishra-Pattanayak to ${\rm SL}(2)$ over non-archimidean local fields without any restriction on the characteristic.

Finite period vectors and Gauss sums

We study four sums including the Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker, Bump--Friedberg, and Jacquet--Shalika sums associated to irreducible cuspidal representations of general linear groups over finite fields. By computing explicitly, we relate Asai and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors over finite fields to those over nonarchimedean local fields through level zero supercuspidal representation. Via Deligne--Kazhdan close field theory, we prove that exterior square and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors agree with corresponding Artin gamma factors of their associated tamely ramified representations through local Langlands correspondence. We also deduce product formulae for Asai, Bump--Friedberg, and exterior square gamma factors in terms of Gauss sums. By combining these results, we examine Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker--Rallis, Jacquet--Shalika, and Friedberg--Jacquet periods and vectors and their connections to Rankin-Selberg, Asai, exterior square, and Bump-Friedberg gamma factors, respectively.

The local exterior square and Asai $L$-functions for $GL(n)$ in odd characteristic

Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of odd characteristic $p > 0$. In this paper, we consider local exterior square $L$-functions $L(s,π,\wedge^2)$, Bump-Friedberg $L$-functions $L(s,π,BF)$, and Asai $L$-functions $L(s,π,As)$ of an irreducible admissible representation $π$ of $GL_m(F)$. In particular, we establish that those $L$-functions, via the theory of integral representations, are equal to their corresponding Artin $L$-functions $L(s,\wedge^2(ϕ(π)))$, $L(s+1/2,ϕ(π))L(s,\wedge^2(ϕ(π)))$, and $L(s,As(ϕ(π)))$ of the associated Langlands parameter $ϕ(π)$ under the local Langlands correspondence. These are achieved by proving the identity for irreducible supercuspidal representations, exploiting the local to global argument due to Henniart and Lomeli.

The Langlands-Shahidi method for pairs via types and covers

We compute the local coefficient attached to a pair $(π_1,π_2)$ of supercuspidal (complex) representations of the general linear group using the theory of types and covers à la Bushnell-Kutzko. In the process, we obtain another proof of a well-known formula of Shahidi for the corresponding Plancherel constant. The approach taken here can be adapted to other situations of arithmetic interest within the context of the Langlands-Shahidi method, particularly, to that of a Siegel Levi subgroup inside a classical group.

The local period integrals and essential vectors

By applying the formula for essential Whittaker functions established by Matringe and Miyauchi, we study five integral representations for irreducible admissible generic representations of ${\rm GL}_n$ over $p$-adic fields. In each case, we show that the integrals achieve local formal $L$-functions defined by Langlands parameters, when the test vector is associated to the newform. We give the relation between local periods involving essential Whittaker functions and special values of formal $L$-factors at $s=1$ for certain distinguished or unitary representations. The period integrals are also served as standard non-zero distinguished forms.

Test Vectors for Archimedean Period Integrals

We study period integrals involving Whittaker functions associated to generic irreducible Casselman-Wallach representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$, where $F$ is an archimedean local field. Via the archimedean theory of newforms for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ developed by the first author, we prove that newforms are weak test vectors for several period integrals, including the $\mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n$ Rankin-Selberg integral, the Flicker integral, and the Bump-Friedberg integral. By taking special values of these period integrals, we deduce that newforms are weak test vectors for Rankin-Selberg periods, Flicker-Rallis periods, and Friedberg-Jacquet periods. These results parallel analogous results in the nonarchimedean setting proven by the second author, which use the nonarchimedean theory of newforms for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ developed by Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika. By combining these archimedean and nonarchimedean results, we prove the existence of weak test vectors for certain global period integrals of automorphic forms.

Rankin-Selberg integrals for local symmetric square factors on $GL\mathrm{(2)}$

Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible (complex) representation of $GL(2)$ over a non-archimedean characteristic zero local field with odd residual characteristic. In this paper we prove the equality between the local symmetric square $L$-function associated to $π$ arising from integral representations and the corresponding Artin $L$-function for its Langlands parameter through the local Langlands correspondence. With this in hand, we show the stability of local symmetric $γ$-factors attached to $π$ under highly ramified twists.

Stability of Asai local factors for $GL(2)$

Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic not equal to $2$ and let $E/F$ be a quadratic algebra. We prove the stability of local factors attached to (complex) irreducible admissible representations of $GL(2,E)$ via the Rankin-Selberg method under highly ramified twists. This includes both the Asai as well as the Rankin-Selberg local factors attached to pairs. Our method relies on expressing the gamma factor as a Mellin transform using Bessel functions.

Derivatives and Exceptional Poles of the Local Exterior Square $L$-Function for $GL_m$

Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible representation of $GL_m(F)$, where $F$ is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We follow the method developed by Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro to complete the computation of the local exterior square $L$-function $L(s,π,\wedge^2)$ in terms of $L$-functions of supercuspidal representations via an integral representation established by Jacquet and Shalika in $1990$. We analyze the local exterior square $L$-functions via exceptional poles and Bernstein and Zelevinsky derivatives. With this result, we show the equality of the local analytic $L$-functions $L(s,π,\wedge^2)$ via integral integral representations for the irreducible admissible representation $π$ for $GL_m(F)$ and the local arithmetic $L$-functions $L(s, \wedge^2(ϕ(π)))$ of its Langlands parameter $ϕ(π)$ via local Langlands correspondence.

Hybrid Level Aspect Subconvexity for $GL(2)\times GL(1)$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-Functions

Let $M$ be a squarefree positive integer and $P$ a prime number coprime to $M$ such that $P\sim M^η$ with $0 < η< 2/5$. We simplify the proof of subconvexity bounds for $L(\frac{1}{2},f\otimesχ)$ when $f$ is a primitive holomorphic cusp form of level $P$ and $χ$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M$. These bounds are attained through an unamplified second moment method using a modified version of the delta method due to R. Munshi. The technique is similar to that used by Duke-Friedlander-Iwaniec save for the modification of the delta method.
