Centimeter-scale fully suspended metal and metal oxide thin films by one-step transfer-free liquid metal capillary forming

Fully suspended thin films can decouple substrate effects and provide additional tuning degrees of freedom compared with their substrate-supported counterparts, making them unique platforms for next-generation thin film devices. Here we report one-step, transfer-free and substrate-free fabrication of centimeter-scale ultrathin fully suspended metal and metal oxide film structures via liquid metal capillary forming. We show that, analogous to soap film formation, the instantaneously developed few-nanometer-thick native surface oxide can laminate various liquid metals into micrometer-thick metallic films. Surprisingly, the surfactant-like metal oxide bilayer can survive dewetting-induced liquid metal drainage, forming suspended two-dimensional films featuring an enormous lateral size-to-thickness ratio on the order of 10^7. We further demonstrate rapid prototyping of metallic minimal-surface thin-walled structures and ultra-sensitive acoustic wave detection with these suspended thin film platforms.

Data Correction and Evolution Analysis of the ProgrammableWeb Service Ecosystem

The evolution analysis on Web service ecosystems has become a critical problem as the frequency of service changes on the Internet increases rapidly. Developers need to understand these evolution patterns to assist in their decision-making on service selection. ProgrammableWeb is a popular Web service ecosystem on which several evolution analyses have been conducted in the literature. However, the existing studies have ignored the quality issues of the ProgrammableWeb dataset and the issue of service obsolescence. In this study, we first report the quality issues identified in the ProgrammableWeb dataset from our empirical study. Then, we propose a novel method to correct the relevant evolution analysis data by estimating the life cycle of application programming interfaces (APIs) and mashups. We also reveal how to use three different dynamic network models in the service ecosystem evolution analysis based on the corrected ProgrammableWeb dataset. Our experimental experience iterates the quality issues of the original ProgrammableWeb and highlights several research opportunities.

A multi-asset investment and consumption problem with transaction costs

In this article we study a multi-asset version of the Merton investment and consumption problem with proportional transaction costs. In general it is difficult to make analytical progress towards a solution in such problems, but we specialise to a case where transaction costs are zero except for sales and purchases of a single asset which we call the illiquid asset. Assuming agents have CRRA utilities and asset prices follow exponential Brownian motions we show that the underlying HJB equation can be transformed into a boundary value problem for a first order differential equation. The optimal strategy is to trade the illiquid asset only when the fraction of the total portfolio value invested in this asset falls outside a fixed interval. Important properties of the multi-asset problem (including when the problem is well-posed, ill-posed, or well-posed only for large transaction costs) can be inferred from the behaviours of a quadratic function of a single variable and another algebraic function.

Optimal consumption and investment under transaction costs

In this article we consider the Merton problem in a market with a single risky asset and transaction costs. We give a complete solution of the problem up to the solution of a free-boundary problem for a first-order differential equation, and find that the form of the solution (whether the problem is well-posed, whether the problem is well-posed only for large transaction costs, whether the no-transaction wedge lies in the first, second or fourth quadrants) depends only on a quadratic whose co-efficients are functions of the parameters of the problem, and then only through the value and slope of this quadratic at zero, one and the turning point. We find that for some parameter values and for large transaction costs the location of the boundary at which sales of the risky asset occur is independent of the transaction cost on purchases. We give both a mathematical and financial reason for this phenomena.

Multi-asset consumption-investment problems with infinite transaction costs

The subject of this paper is an optimal consumption/optimal portfolio problem with transaction costs and with multiple risky assets. In our model the transaction costs take a special form in that transaction costs on purchases of one of the risky assets (the endowed asset) are infinite, and transaction costs involving the other risky assets are zero. Effectively, the endowed asset can only be sold. In general, multi-asset optional consumption/optimal portfolio problems are very challenging, but the extra structure we introduce allows us to make significant progress towards an analytical solution. For an agent with CRRA utility we completely characterise the different types of optimal behaviours. These include always selling the entire holdings of the endowed asset immediately, selling the endowed asset whenever the ratio of the value of the holdings of the endowed asset to other wealth gets above a critical ratio, and selling the endowed asset only when other wealth is zero. This characterisation is in terms of solutions of a boundary crossing problem for a first order ODE. The technical contribution is to show that the problem of solving the HJB equation, which is a second order, non-linear PDE subject to smooth fit at an unknown free boundary, can be reduced to this much simpler problem involving an explicit first order ODE. This technical contribution is at the heart of our analytical and numerical results, and allows us to prove monotonicity of the critical exercise threshold and the certainty equivalent value in the model parameters.

Optimal consumption and sale strategies for a risk averse agent

In this article we consider a special case of an optimal consumption/optimal portfolio problem first studied by Constantinides and Magill and by Davis and Norman, in which an agent with constant relative risk aversion seeks to maximise expected discounted utility of consumption over the infinite horizon, in a model comprising a risk-free asset and a risky asset with proportional transaction costs. The special case that we consider is that the cost of purchases of the risky asset is infinite, or equivalently the risky asset can only be sold and not bought. In this special setting new solution techniques are available, and we can make considerable progress towards an analytical solution. This means we are able to consider the comparative statics of the problem. There are some surprising conclusions, such as consumption rates are not monotone increasing in the return of the asset, nor are the certainty equivalent values of the risky positions monotone in the risk aversion.
