DESI and Dynamical Dark Energy from Extended Pre-geometric Gravity

We consider the simplest quadratic extension of MacDowell--Mansouri pre-geometric gravity that preserves the topological pre-volume-form symmetry. Upon symmetry breaking, the theory reduces to $(\mathrm{Lovelock})^2$ gravity and admits a Galileon-like Horndeski scalar-tensor representation. The gravitational Higgs mechanism relates the Gauss--Bonnet coupling to the bare cosmological constant, while the quadratic correction elevates the gravitational $θ$-angle to a dynamical gravi-axion whose ultra-light mass scale can drive late-time acceleration. We confront the Jordan-frame background with DESI DR2 baryon-acoustic-oscillation measurements and an auxiliary six-point compressed growth diagnostic. A transient dark-energy response localized near $H\simeq m_b$ ($m_b$ the effective gravi-axion mass) reproduces the fitted expansion and its BAO-distance predictions and becomes negligible at high redshift. For the full linear calculation, we combine a smooth positive-density representative of this response class with explicitly imposed GR-like tensor and local sectors, together with the parameterized post-Friedmann prescription. The resulting gravi-axion benchmark exhibits a transient effective phantom crossing and admits a regular full linear CAMB evolution. Its separate likelihood contributions are promising relative to those obtained from the flat-$Λ$CDM baseline for the same data set. These results establish the dynamical gravi-axion framework, dual to MacDowell--Mansouri pre-geometric gravity, as a viable effective quantum-gravity inspired description of late-time cosmology, motivating further investigation into its fundamental origin and perturbative consistency.

Bouncing cosmologies from Born-Infeld-type gravity

We construct a Born-Infeld-type $f(R,{\cal G})$ modification of gravity, where ${\cal G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, by embedding Born-Infeld electrodynamics in a five-dimensional pure modified gravity. This method leads to the correspondence between curvature scalars and electromagnetic field strength scalars -- $R\leftrightarrow F_{μν}F^{μν}$ and ${\cal G}\leftrightarrow (ε_{μνρσ}F^{μν}F^{ρσ})^2$ -- allowing us to replicate the structure of Born-Infeld electrodynamics in the gravitational sector. The resulting Born-Infeld-type gravity is a ghost-free $f(R,{\cal G})$ theory which reduces to Einstein gravity in the low energy limit. In this work we focus on bouncing cosmological solutions of such a theory, which require positive spatial curvature. By using both the Jordan and Einstein frame analyses, we find a vast space of bouncing solutions with different asymptotic behaviors, including solutions with multiple bounces grouped together. Observational consequences of such solutions will be investigated in the future.

(Lovelock)$^2$ inflation: explaining the ACT data and equivalence to Higgs-Gauss-Bonnet inflation

We revisit the Starobinsky model of inflation in light of recent data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), which indicates a potential preference for a slightly larger scalar spectral index $n_s$ than predicted by the standard $R^2$ scenario. We demonstrate that a natural one-parameter generalization to a quadratic model $\sim L+L^2$ in the Lovelock invariant $L=R+\fracα{4}{\cal G}$ ($\cal G$ is the Gauss--Bonnet term), can effectively resolve this minor tension. Scalar-tensor formulation of this theory yields an Einstein-frame Starobinsky-type scalar potential augmented by Gauss--Bonnet and derivative couplings, which modify the inflationary slow-roll dynamics. We show that a non-zero coupling $α$ for the Gauss-Bonnet term can shift $(n_s, r)$ along a trajectory that brings the predictions into better agreement with the ACT likelihood. We also find that $L+L^2$ gravity, in its scalar-tensor formulation, is equivalent to Higgs inflation coupled to the Gauss--Bonnet term, and belongs to the Horndeski/galileon class of modified gravities. This work establishes the quadratic $f(L)$ gravity as a compelling and physically motivated extension that preserves the successes of Starobinsky inflation while improving its fit to modern precision cosmological data.

Domain Wall formation from $Z_2$ spontaneous symmetry breaking/restoration in Scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

This study offers a detailed analysis of domain wall formation and its cosmological consequences in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to a scalar field. A central aspect of the model is the scalar field Lagrangian's ability to spontaneously break and restore its $Z_2$ discrete symmetry. This spontaneous symmetry breaking is a fundamental prerequisite for topological defect formation. In this context, domain walls arise as kink-like, solitonic solutions that interpolate between the distinct vacuum states of the theory. We perform a detailed numerical analysis of the dynamics of a neutral scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, exploring its behavior across different cosmological backgrounds. Our results show that coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term enables the formation of static domain walls with a fixed proper distance within a de Sitter (inflationary) background. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to a radiation-dominated epoch, where we identify that the cosmic expansion causes the "melting" of these domain walls. To assess the potential observational signatures of this scenario, we calculate the predicted spectrum of stochastic gravitational waves generated by the network dynamics using {\it CosmoLattice} package. We also examine the possible generation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) associated with collapsing domain walls. Regrettably, our calculations indicate that the direct observational detection of such domain walls from this model lies beyond the reach of foreseeable experiments. Our results constitute a No-Go argument against the generation of PBHs as well as of large amplitude GW signals from domain walls in a Scalar-EGB spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism.

Towards Stochastic Inflation in Higher-Curvature Gravity

We study stochastic inflation in the presence of higher-curvature terms non-minimally coupled to the inflaton. Focusing on quadratic curvature invariants, we single out the Gauss-Bonnet term which is known to avoid ghosts, while having non-trivial effects on the background and scalar mode evolution when coupled to the scalar field. Stochastic Klein-Gordon and Langevin equations are derived in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, and their slow-roll and ultra-slow-roll limits are studied. By using first-passage time method, scalar power spectrum and PBH mass fraction are estimated in these limits. Stochastic evolution of a Gauss-Bonnet-coupled spectator field in de Sitter vacuum is also discussed.

Single-field D-type inflation in the minimal supergravity in light of Planck-ACT-SPT data

The minimal supergravity framework is applied to a construction of new D-type single-field models of inflation in agreement with precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation by Planck Collaboration, BICEP/Keck Collaboration, Atacama Cosmology Telescope and South Pole Telescope. The inflaton potential, the power spectrum of scalar perturbations, the cosmological observables and the reconstruction procedure can be very simple when using the e-folds as the running variable.

Curvature corrections to Starobinsky inflation can explain the ACT results

We investigate the impact of curvature corrections to Starobinsky inflation in light of the latest observational results from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). While the pure Starobinsky model remains a compelling candidate for cosmic inflation, we explore how the higher-order curvature terms $R^3$, $R^{4}$ and $R^{3/2}$ modify the inflationary predictions. Using the scalar-tensor formulation of $f(R)$ gravity, we derive the effective scalar potentials and compute the resulting scalar tilt $n_s$, its running index $α_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We show that those curvature corrections can shift the predictions to align better with the ACT data, thus providing a possible resolution to a minor discrepancy between the standard Starobinsky model and ACT observations. Our findings suggest that the modified Starobinsky models with the higher-order curvature terms offer a viable pathway to reconciling inflationary predictions with precision cosmological measurements. At the same time, measuring or constraining primordial tensor modes can help to discriminate between these corrections.

Gauss-Bonnet-induced symmetry breaking/restoration during inflation

We propose a mechanism of symmetry breaking or restoration that can occur in the middle of inflation due to the coupling of the Gauss-Bonnet term to a charged scalar. The Gauss-Bonnet coupling results in an inflaton-dependent effective squared mass of the charged scalar, which can change its sign (around the symmetric point) during inflation. This can lead to spontaneous breaking of the symmetry, or to its restoration, if it is initially broken. We show the conditions under which the backreaction of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the inflationary background is negligible, such that the predictions of a given inflationary model are unaffected by the symmetry breaking/restoration process.

Sound Speed Resonance of Gravitational Waves in Gauss-Bonnet-coupled inflation

We demonstrate the occurrence of Sound Speed Resonances (SSR) in Gauss-Bonnet-coupled inflation across a wide range of coupling functions and parameters. After inflation, the damped oscillations of the inflaton around its potential minimum induces damped oscillations of the sound speed of tensor modes, leading to resonant amplification of the latter. Once the inflaton stabilizes around the minimum, the tensor sound speed reduces to unity (speed of light). In the context of multi-field inflation, the sound speed oscillations can be followed by a second phase of inflation, resulting in a distinctive stochastic background of Gravitational Waves (GWs). We show that these GW signals can be probed by upcoming experiments such as $\textbf{SKA}$, $\textbf{DECIGO}$, and $\textbf{BBO}$ depending on the duration of the second inflationary phase.

Meso-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking with non-minimal coupling

We study a realization of the inflationary scenario where the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is spontaneously broken during inflation, facilitated by its non-minimal coupling to gravity. This results in effectively two-field inflation: the early stage is driven by an inflaton field with the PQ symmetry intact, and the later stage is driven by the PQ scalar after its effective mass becomes tachyonic, causing destabilization from the origin. The non-minimal coupling serves the dual purpose of restoring the PQ symmetry during early inflation and flattening the PQ potential post-tachyonic shift, allowing for continued slow roll. We analyze the inflationary background solutions and scalar perturbations, which are amplified at small scales via significant isocurvature perturbations generated near the symmetry-breaking epoch. These perturbations lead to second-order gravitational waves, detectable by next-generation space-based experiments.

Hybrid inflation from supersymmetry breaking

We extend a recently proposed framework, dubbed inflation by supersymmetry breaking, to hybrid inflation by introducing a waterfall field that allows to decouple the supersymmetry breaking scale in the observable sector from the inflation scale, while keeping intact the inflation sector and its successful predictions: naturally small slow-roll parameters, small field initial conditions and absence of the pseudo-scalar companion of the inflaton, in terms of one free parameter which is the first order correction to the inflaton Kähler potential. During inflation, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with the inflaton being the superpartner of the goldstino, together with a massive vector that gauges the R-symmetry. Inflation arises around the maximum of the scalar potential at the origin where R-symmetry is unbroken. Moreover, a nearby minimum with tuneable vacuum energy can be accommodated by introducing a second order correction to the Kähler potential. The inflaton sector can also play the role of the supersymmetry breaking 'hidden' sector when coupled to the (supersymmetric) Standard Model, predicting a superheavy superparticle spectrum near the inflation scale. Here we show that the introduction of a waterfall field provides a natural way to end inflation and allows for a scale separation between supersymmetry breaking and inflation. Moreover, the study of the global vacuum describing low energy Standard Model physics can be done in a perturbative way within a region of the parameter space of the model.

Aspects of cubic nilpotent superfields

We study in more detail the cubic constraints for N=1 chiral superfields proposed in the earlier work Eur. Phys. J. C 81, 523 (2021), which describe low-energy goldstino-axion dynamics in global non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We generalize the constraint (i) by gauging the abelian symmetry that shifts the axion, and (ii) to supergravity. In the former case we show that after adding the abelian gauge multiplet, the construction can be formulated as a cubic nilpotent massive vector superfield. In the latter case we find explicit solution to the constraint including contributions from the supergravity multiplet. We also propose microscopic supergravity models (with linear supersymmetry), including a toy model for the string dilaton, which give rise to the cubic constraints at low energies.

Primordial black holes from Volkov-Akulov-Starobinsky supergravity

We study the formation of primordial black holes (PBH) in the Starobinsky supergravity coupled to the nilpotent superfield describing Volkov-Akulov goldstino. By using the no-scale Kähler potential and a polynomial superpotential, we find that under certain conditions our model can describe effectively single-field inflation with the ultra-slow-roll phase that appears near a critical (nearly-inflection) point of the scalar potential. This can lead to the formation of PBH as part of (or whole) dark matter, while keeping the inflationary spectral tilt and the tensor-to-scalar ratio in good agreement with the current cosmic microwave background (CMB) bounds. After inflation, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at the inflationary scale with the vanishing cosmological constant.

More on gravitational waves from double monodromy inflation

We further analyze phenomenological implications of double axion monodromy inflation proposed in Ref. Phys. Rev. D 104, L081302 (2021), in gravitational wave physics. We show that in addition to chiral gravitational waves (GW) originating from gauge field instability, the model also predicts significant amount of non-chiral, scalar-induced gravitational waves, both peaking at around the same frequencies. We find that although chiral GW density has much larger peak, non-chiral GWs can dominate away from the peak as they decay at a slower rate. This provides an interesting GW signature to be probed by future space-based interferometers such as LISA and DECIGO.

Inflation, SUSY breaking, and primordial black holes in modified supergravity coupled to chiral matter

We propose a novel model of the modified (Starobinsky-like) old-minimal-type supergravity coupled to a chiral matter superfield, that can {\it simultaneously} describe multi-field inflation, primordial black hole (PBH) formation, dark matter (DM), and spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking after inflation in a Minkowski vacuum. The PBH masses in our supergravity model of double slow-roll inflation, with a short phase of "ultra-slow-roll" between two slow-roll phases, are close to $10^{18}$ g. We find that a significant PBH fraction in the allowed mass window can be supplemented by spontaneous SUSY breaking in the vacuum with the gravitino mass close to the scalaron (inflaton) mass M of the order $10^{13}$ GeV. Our supergravity model favors the {\it composite} nature of DM as a mixture of PBH and heavy gravitinos as the lightest SUSY particles. The composite DM significantly relaxes fine-tuning needed for the whole PBH-DM. The PBH-DM fraction is derived, and the second-order gravitational wave background induced by the enhanced scalar perturbations is calculated. Those gravitational waves may be accessible by the future space-based gravitational interferometers.

Gauging the R-symmetry of old-minimal $R+R^2$ supergravity

Old-minimal $R+R^2$ supergravity has a $U(1)$ R-symmetry which rotates the chiral curvature superfield. We gauge this R-symmetry and study new interactions involving the gauge multiplet in the context of inflation and supersymmetry breaking. We construct models where supersymmetry and the R-symmetry are spontaneously broken during and after Starobinsky inflation, and one-loop gauge anomalies are cancelled by the Green--Schwarz mechanism which can also generate Standard Model gaugino masses. The hierarchy between the auxiliary fields, $\langle F\rangle\gtrsim\langle D\rangle$, leads to split mass spectrum where the chiral multiplet masses are around the inflationary scale ($10^{13}$ GeV), while the gauge multiplet masses can be arbitrarily small.

Quintic constraints for ${\cal N}=2$ multiplets and complete SUSY breaking

We study real fifth-order superfield constraint for ${\cal N}=2$ vector (and tensor) multiplet and derive most general solution describing complete supersymmetry breaking, and preserving a real scalar, two goldstini, and an abelian gauge field as low-energy degrees of freedom on which both supersymmetries are realized non-linearly. The surviving scalar is identified as an axion of a broken global abelian symmetry, while its scalar partner (saxion) is eliminated in terms of the goldstini. We provide an example of a UV model giving rise to the quintic constraint, and discuss the connection of this constraint and its solution to other known superfield constraints in ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=1$ cases.

Reheating after inflation by supersymmetry breaking

We study reheating after the end of inflation in models where the inflaton is the superpartner of goldstino and is charged under a gauged $U(1)$ R-symmetry. We consider two classes of models -- one is small field characterized by an almost flat Kähler space, and the other large field characterized by a hyperbolic Kähler space $SU(1,1)/U(1)$, while in both cases the inflaton superpotential is linear due to the R-symmetry. The inflationary observables of our models fit within 2$σ$ CMB values. Upon coupling the inflaton sector to the (supersymmetric) Standard Model, we compute the MSSM parameters, mass spectrum, and decay modes of the inflaton, with the resulting reheating temperature around $10^8$ GeV. We also find that both models can accommodate superheavy LSP dark matter, depending on the parameter choice.
