Determinantal variety and normal embedding

The space of matrices of positive determinant GL^+_n inherits an extrinsic metric space structure from R^{n^2}. On the other hand, taking the infimum of the lengths of all paths connecting two points in GL^+_n gives an intrinsic metric. We prove bilipschitz equivalence for intrinsic and extrinsic metrics on GL^+_n, exploiting the conical structure of the stratification of the space of n by n matrices by rank.

Optimal sweepouts of a Riemannian 2-sphere

Given a sweepout of a Riemannian 2-sphere which is composed of curves of length less than L, we construct a second sweepout composed of curves of length less than L which are either constant curves or simple curves. This result, and the methods used to prove it, have several consequences; we answer a question of M. Freedman concerning the existence of min-max embedded geodesics, we partially answer a question due to N. Hingston and H.-B. Rademacher, and we also extend the results of [CL] concerning converting homotopies to isotopies in an effective way.

Sweeping out 3-manifold of positive Ricci curvature by short 1-cycles via estimates of min-max surfaces

We prove that given a three manifold with an arbitrary metric $(M^3, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature, there exists a sweepout of $M$ by surfaces of genus $\leq 3$ and areas bounded by $C vol(M^3, g)^{2/3}$. We use this result to construct a sweepout of $M$ by 1-cycles of length at most $C vol(M^3, g)^{1/3}$. The sweepout of surfaces is generated from a min-max minimal surface. If further assuming a positive scalar curvature lower bound, we can get a diameter upper bound for the min-max surface.

Splitting a contraction of a simple curve traversed $m$ times

Suppose that $M$ is a $2$-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold, and let $γ$ be a simple closed curve on $M$. Let $m γ$ denote the curve formed by tracing $γ$ $m$ times. We prove that if $m γ$ is contractible through curves of length less than $L$, then $γ$ is contractible through curves of length less than $L$. In the last section we state several open questions about controlling length and the number of self-intersections in homotopies of curves on Riemannian surfaces.

Width, Ricci curvature and minimal hypersurfaces

Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, for $3 \leq n \leq 7$, and non-negative Ricci curvature. Let $g = ϕ^2 g_0$ be a metric in the conformal class of $g_0$. We show that there exists a smooth closed embedded minimal hypersurface in $(M,g)$ of volume bounded by $C V^{\frac{n-1}{n}}$, where $V$ is the total volume of $(M,g)$ and $C$ is a constant that depends only on $n$. When $Ric(M,g_0) \geq -(n-1)$ we obtain a similar bound with constant $C$ depending only on $n$ and the volume of $(M,g_0)$. Our second result concerns manifolds $(M,g)$ of positive Ricci curvature. We obtain an effective version of a theorem of F. Coda Marques and A. Neves on the existence of infinitely many minimal hypersurfaces on $(M,g)$. We show that for any such manifold there exists $k$ minimal hypersurfaces of volume at most $C_n V \left( sys_{n-1}(M)\right)^{-\frac{1}{n-1}} k ^ {\frac{1}{n-1}}$, where $V$ denotes the volume of $(M,g_0)$ and $sys_{n-1}(M)$ is the smallest volume of a non-trivial minimal hypersurface.

Families of short cycles on Riemannian surfaces

Let $M$ be a closed Riemannian surface of genus $g$. We construct a family of 1-cycles on $M$ that represents a non-trivial element of the k'th homology group of the space of cycles and such that the mass of each cycle is bounded above by $C \max\{\sqrt{k}, \sqrt{g}\} \sqrt{Area(M)}$. This result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant.

Contracting the boundary of a Riemannian 2-disc

Let $D$ be a Riemannian 2-disc of area $A$, diameter $d$ and length of the boundary $L$. We prove that it is possible to contract the boundary of $D$ through curves of length $\leq L + 200d\max\{1,\ln {\sqrt{A}\over d} \}$. This answers a twenty-year old question of S. Frankel and M. Katz, a version of which was asked earlier by M.Gromov. We also prove that a Riemannian $2$-sphere $M$ of diameter $d$ and area $A$ can be swept out by loops based at any prescribed point $p\in M$ of length $\leq 200 d\max\{1,\ln{\sqrt{A}\over d} \}$. This estimate is optimal up to a constant factor. In addition, we provide much better (and nearly optimal) estimates for these problems in the case, when $A<<d^2$. Finally, we describe the applications of our estimates for study of lengths of various geodesics between a fixed pair of points on "thin" Riemannian $2$-spheres.

Lengths of three simple periodic geodesics on a Riemannian $2$-sphere

Let $M$ be a Riemannian $2$-sphere. A classical theorem of Lyusternik and Shnirelman asserts the existence of three distinct simple non-trivial periodic geodesics on $M$. In this paper we prove that there exist three simple periodic geodesics with lengths that do not exceed $20d$, where $d$ is the diameter of $M$. We also present an upper bound that depends only on the area and diameter for the lengths of the three simple periodic geodesics with positive indices that appear as minimax critical values in the classical proofs of the Lyusternik-Shnirelman theorem. Finally, we present better bounds for these three lengths for "thin" spheres, when the area $A$ is much less than $d^2$, where the bounds for the lengths of the first two simple periodic geodesics are asymptotically optimal, when ${A\over d^2}\longrightarrow 0$.

Slicing a 2-sphere

We show that for every complete Riemannian surface $M$ diffeomorphic to a sphere with $k \geq 0$ holes there exists a Morse function $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, which is constant on each connected component of the boundary of $M$ and has fibers of length no more than $52 \sqrt{Area(M)}+length(\partial M)$. We also show that on every 2-sphere there exists a simple closed curve of length $\leq 26 \sqrt{Area(S^2)}$ subdividing the sphere into two discs of area $\geq \frac{1}{3}Area(S^2)$

Converting homotopies to isotopies and dividing homotopies in half in an effective way

We prove two theorems about homotopies of curves on 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We show that, for any epsilon > 0, if two simple closed curves are homotopic through curves of bounded length L, then they are also isotopic through curves of length bounded by L + epsilon. If the manifold is orientable, then for any epsilon > 0 we show that, if we can contract a curve gamma traversed twice through curves of length bounded by L, then we can also contract gamma through curves bounded in length by L + epsilon. Our method involves cutting curves at their self-intersection points and reconnecting them in a prescribed way. We consider the space of all curves obtained in this way from the original homotopy, and use a novel approach to show that this space contains a path which yields the desired homotopy.

Surfaces of small diameter with large width

Given a 2-dimensional surface M and a constant C we construct a Riemannian metric g, so that diameter diam(M,g)=1 and every 1-cycle dividing M into two regions of equal area has length >C. It follows that there exists no universal inequality bounding 1-width of M in terms of its diameter. This answers a question of Stephane Sabourau.

Spheres of small diameter with long sweep-outs

We prove the absence of a universal diameter bound on lengths of curves in a sweep-out of a Riemannian 2-sphere. If such bound existed it would yield a simple proof of existence of short geodesic segments and closed geodesics on a sphere of small diameter.
