Intra-Frame Error Concealment Scheme using 3D Reversible Data Hiding in Mobile Cloud Environment

Data in mobile cloud environment are mainly transmitted via wireless noisy channels, which may result in transmission errors with a high probability due to its unreliable connectivity. For video transmission, unreliable connectivity may cause significant degradation of the content. Improving or keeping video quality over lossy channel is therefore a very important research topic. Error concealment with data hiding (ECDH) is an effective way to conceal the errors introduced by channels. It can reduce error propagation between neighbor blocks/frames comparing with the methods exploiting temporal/spatial correlations. The existing video ECDH methods often embed the motion vectors (MVs) into the specific locations. Nevertheless, specific embedding locations cannot resist against random errors. To compensate the unreliable connectivity in mobile cloud environment, in this paper, we present a video ECDH scheme using 3D reversible data hiding (RDH), in which each MV is repeated multiple times, and the repeated MVs are embedded into different macroblocks (MBs) randomly. Though the multiple embedding requires more embedding space, satisfactory trade-off between the introduced distortion and the reconstructed video quality can be achieved by tuning the repeating times of the MVs. For random embedding, the lost probability of the MVs decreases rapidly, resulting in better error concealment performance. Experimental results show that the PSNR values gain about 5dB at least comparing with the existing ECDH methods. Meanwhile, the proposed method improves the video quality significantly.

Design of an underwater acoustic bend by pentamode metafluid

We design an impedance matching underwater acoustic bend with pentamode microstructure. The proposed bend is assembled by pentamode lattice. The effective density and compressive mod- ulus of each unit cell can be tuned simultaneously, which are modulated to guarantee both the bending effect and high transmission. The standard deviations of transmitted phase are calculated to quantitatively evaluate the degree of the distortion of the transmitted wavefront, while the trans- mission is calculated to appraise the degree of acoustic impedance matching. The low standard deviations and high transmission indicate that the designed bend has a nice broadband bending effect and is impedance-matched to water. This design has potential applications in underwater communication and underwater detection.

Longitudinal elastic wave control by pre-deforming semi-linear materials

An incremental wave superimposed on a pre-deformed hyper-elastic material perceives an elastic media with the instantaneous modulus of the current material. This offers a new route with a broadband feature to control elastic waves by purposely creating finite deformation field. This study proves that the governing equation of a semi-linear material under a symmetric pre-deformation condition maintains the form invariance for longitudinal wave, so the longitudinal wave control can be made by transformation method without the constraint condition on principle stretches, but this is not the case for shear waves. Therefore pre-deforming a semi-linear material provides a potential method for treating longitudinal and shear waves differently. Examples with elastic wave control and band structure shift through pre-deforming a semi-linear material are provided to illustrate this finding. Finally, a one-dimensional spring lattice is proposed to mimic a semi-linear material, and the dispersion relation for longitudinal waves in a sandwich structure with such spring lattice is shown to be invariant during elongation, confirming the result found based on a homogeneous semi-linear material. These results may stimulate researches on designing new hyper-elastic microstructures as well as designing new devices based on pre-deformed hyper-elastic materials.

Broadband solid cloak for underwater acoustics

Application of transformation theory to underwater acoustics has been a challenging task because highly anisotropic density is unachievable in water. A possible strategy is to exploit anisotropic modulus rather than density, while has not been experimentally demonstrated. We present an annular underwater acoustic cloak designed from particular graded solid microstructures. The geometry tailored microstructures mimics meta-fluid with highly anisotropic modulus through substantially suppressed shear wave. Transient wave experiments are conducted with the cloak in a designed 2D underwater waveguide system and proved excellent cloaking performance for enclosed target over broadband frequency 9-15 kHz. This finding paves the way for controlling underwater acoustics using the structured anisotropic modulus meta-fluid.

Golden Probe of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

The ratio of the Higgs couplings to $WW$ and $ZZ$ pairs, $λ_{WZ}$, is a fundamental parameter in electroweak symmetry breaking as well as a measure of the (approximate) custodial symmetry possessed by the gauge boson mass matrix. We show that Higgs decays to four leptons are sensitive, via tree level/1-loop interference effects, to both the magnitude and, in particular, overall sign of $λ_{WZ}$. Determining this sign requires interference effects, as it is nearly impossible to measure with rate information. Furthermore, simply determining the sign effectively establishes the custodial representation of the Higgs boson. We find that $h\to4\ell$ ($4\ell \equiv 2e2μ, 4e, 4μ$) decays have excellent prospects of directly establishing the overall sign at a high luminosity 13 TeV LHC. We also examine the ultimate LHC sensitivity in $h\to4\ell$ to the magnitude of $λ_{WZ}$. Our results are independent of other measurements of the Higgs boson couplings and, in particular, largely free of assumptions about the top quark Yukawa couplings which also enter at 1-loop. This makes $h\to4\ell$ a unique and independent probe of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism and custodial symmetry.

Alternative Technique to Asymmetry Analysis-Based Overlapping for Foot Ulcer Examination: Scalable Scanning

Asymmetry analysis based on the overlapping of thermal images proved able to detect inflammation and, predict foot ulceration. This technique involves three main steps: segmentation, geometric transformation, and overlapping. However, the overlapping technique, which consists of subtracting the intensity levels of the right foot from those of the left foot, can also detect false abnormal areas if the projections of the left and right feet are not the same. In this paper, we present an alternative technique to asymmetry analysis-based overlapping. The proposed technique, scalable scanning, allows for an effective comparison even if the shapes and sizes of the feet projections appear differently in the image. The tested results show that asymmetry analysis- based scalable scanning provides fewer false abnormal areas than does asymmetry analysis -based overlapping.

Interactive Modeling of Concept Drift and Errors in Relevance Feedback

Users giving relevance feedback in exploratory search are often uncertain about the correctness of their feedback, which may result in noisy or even erroneous feedback. Additionally, the search intent of the user may be volatile as the user is constantly learning and reformulating her search hypotheses during the search. This may lead to a noticeable concept drift in the feedback. We formulate a Bayesian regression model for predicting the accuracy of each individual user feedback and thus find outliers in the feedback data set. Additionally, we introduce a timeline interface that visualizes the feedback history to the user and gives her suggestions on which past feedback is likely in need of adjustment. This interface also allows the user to adjust the feedback accuracy inferences made by the model. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the performance of the new user model outperforms a simpler baseline and that the performance approaches that of an oracle, given a small amount of additional user interaction. A user study shows that the proposed modelling technique, combined with the timeline interface, makes it easier for the users to notice and correct mistakes in their feedback, and to discover new items.

Characterization of collective ground states in single-layer NbSe2

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are ideal systems for exploring the effects of dimensionality on correlated electronic phases such as charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. In bulk NbSe2 a CDW sets in at TCDW = 33 K and superconductivity sets in at Tc = 7.2 K. Below Tc these electronic states coexist but their microscopic formation mechanisms remain controversial. Here we present an electronic characterization study of a single 2D layer of NbSe2 by means of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and electrical transport measurements. We demonstrate that 3x3 CDW order in NbSe2 remains intact in 2D. Superconductivity also still remains in the 2D limit, but its onset temperature is depressed to 1.9 K. Our STS measurements at 5 K reveal a CDW gap of Δ = 4 meV at the Fermi energy, which is accessible via STS due to the removal of bands crossing the Fermi level for a single layer. Our observations are consistent with the simplified (compared to bulk) electronic structure of single-layer NbSe2, thus providing new insight into CDW formation and superconductivity in this model strongly-correlated system.

A 128 channel Extreme Learning Machine based Neural Decoder for Brain Machine Interfaces

Currently, state-of-the-art motor intention decoding algorithms in brain-machine interfaces are mostly implemented on a PC and consume significant amount of power. A machine learning co-processor in 0.35um CMOS for motor intention decoding in brain-machine interfaces is presented in this paper. Using Extreme Learning Machine algorithm and low-power analog processing, it achieves an energy efficiency of 290 GMACs/W at a classification rate of 50 Hz. The learning in second stage and corresponding digitally stored coefficients are used to increase robustness of the core analog processor. The chip is verified with neural data recorded in monkey finger movements experiment, achieving a decoding accuracy of 99.3% for movement type. The same co-processor is also used to decode time of movement from asynchronous neural spikes. With time-delayed feature dimension enhancement, the classification accuracy can be increased by 5% with limited number of input channels. Further, a sparsity promoting training scheme enables reduction of number of programmable weights by ~2X.

BayesWipe: A Scalable Probabilistic Framework for Cleaning BigData

Recent efforts in data cleaning of structured data have focused exclusively on problems like data deduplication, record matching, and data standardization; none of the approaches addressing these problems focus on fixing incorrect attribute values in tuples. Correcting values in tuples is typically performed by a minimum cost repair of tuples that violate static constraints like CFDs (which have to be provided by domain experts, or learned from a clean sample of the database). In this paper, we provide a method for correcting individual attribute values in a structured database using a Bayesian generative model and a statistical error model learned from the noisy database directly. We thus avoid the necessity for a domain expert or clean master data. We also show how to efficiently perform consistent query answering using this model over a dirty database, in case write permissions to the database are unavailable. We evaluate our methods over both synthetic and real data.

Characterization of SINR Region for Multiple Interfering Multicast in Power-Controlled Systems

This paper considers a wireless communication network consisting of multiple interfering multicast sessions. Different from a unicast system where each transmitter has only one receiver, in a multicast system, each transmitter has multiple receivers. It is a well known result for wireless unicast systems that the feasibility of an signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR) without power constraint is decided by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of a nonnegative matrix. We generalize this result and propose necessary and sufficient conditions for the feasibility of an SINR in a wireless multicast system with and without power constraint. The feasible SINR region as well as its geometric properties are studied. Besides, an iterative algorithm is proposed which can efficiently check the feasibility condition and compute the boundary points of the feasible SINR region.

Automatic exploration of structural regularities in networks

Complex networks provide a powerful mathematical representation of complex systems in nature and society. To understand complex networks, it is crucial to explore their internal structures, also called structural regularities. The task of network structure exploration is to determine how many groups in a complex network and how to group the nodes of the network. Most existing structure exploration methods need to specify either a group number or a certain type of structure when they are applied to a network. In the real world, however, not only the group number but also the certain type of structure that a network has are usually unknown in advance. To automatically explore structural regularities in complex networks, without any prior knowledge about the group number or the certain type of structure, we extend a probabilistic mixture model that can handle networks with any type of structure but needs to specify a group number using Bayesian nonparametric theory and propose a novel Bayesian nonparametric model, called the Bayesian nonparametric mixture (BNPM) model. Experiments conducted on a large number of networks with different structures show that the BNPM model is able to automatically explore structural regularities in networks with a stable and state-of-the-art performance.

New Opportunities in $h\to 4\ell$

The Higgs decay $h\to 4\ell$ has played an important role in discovering the Higgs and measuring its mass thanks to low background and excellent resolution. Current cuts in this channel have been optimized for Higgs discovery via the dominant tree level $ZZ$ contribution arising from electroweak symmetry breaking. Going forward, one of the primary objectives of this sensitive channel will be to probe other Higgs couplings and search for new physics on top of the tree level $ZZ$ `background'. Thanks to interference between these small couplings and the large tree level contribution to $ZZ$, the $h\to 4\ell$ decay is uniquely capable of probing the magnitude \emph{and} CP phases of the Higgs couplings to $γγ$ and $Zγ$ as well as, to a lesser extent, $ZZ$ couplings arising from higher dimensional operators. With this in mind we examine how much relaxing current cuts can enhance the sensitivity while also accounting for the dominant non-Higgs continuum $q\bar{q}\to4\ell$ background. We find the largest enhancement in sensitivity for the $hZγ$ couplings ($\gtrsim 100\%$) followed by $hγγ$ ($\gtrsim 40\%$) and less so for the higher dimensional $hZZ$ couplings (a few percent). With these enhancements, we show that couplings of order Standard Model values for $hγγ$ may optimistically be probed by end of Run-II at the LHC while for $hZγ$ perhaps towards the end of a high luminosity LHC. Thus an appropriately optimized $h\to4\ell$ analysis can complement direct decays of the Higgs to on-shell $γγ$ and $Zγ$ pairs giving a unique opportunity to directly access the CP properties of these couplings.

Coding for Network-Coded Slotted ALOHA

Slotted ALOHA can benefit from physical-layer network coding (PNC) by decoding one or multiple linear combinations of the packets simultaneously transmitted in a timeslot, forming a system of linear equations. Different systems of linear equations are recovered in different timeslots. A message decoder then recovers the original packets of all the users by jointly solving multiple systems of linear equations obtained over different timeslots. We propose the batched BP decoding algorithm that combines belief propagation (BP) and local Gaussian elimination. Compared with pure Gaussian elimination decoding, our algorithm reduces the decoding complexity from cubic to linear function of the number of users. Compared with the ordinary BP decoding algorithm for low-density generator-matrix codes, our algorithm has better performance and the same order of computational complexity. We analyze the performance of the batched BP decoding algorithm by generalizing the tree-based approach and provide an approach to optimize the system performance.

8D Likelihood Effective Higgs Couplings Extraction Framework in the Golden Channel

In this paper we build a comprehensive analysis framework to perform direct extraction of all possible effective Higgs couplings to neutral electroweak gauge bosons in the decay to electrons and muons, the so called `golden channel'. Our framework is based on a maximum likelihood method constructed from analytic expressions of the fully differential cross sections for $h \rightarrow 4\ell$ and for the dominant irreducible $q\bar{q} \rightarrow 4\ell$ background, where $4\ell = 2e2μ, 4e, 4μ$. Detector effects are included by an explicit convolution of these analytic expressions with the appropriate transfer function over all center of mass variables. Using the full set of decay observables, we construct an unbinned 8-dimensional detector-level likelihood function which is continuous in the effective couplings and includes systematic uncertainties. We consider all possible $ZZ$, $Zγ$ and $γγ$ couplings, allowing for general CP odd/even admixtures and any possible phases. We describe how the convolution is performed and demonstrate the validity and power of the framework with a number of supporting checks and example fits. The framework can be used to perform a variety of multi-parameter extractions, including their correlations, to determine the Higgs couplings to neutral electroweak gauge bosons using data obtained at the LHC and other future colliders.

Probing the Higgs Couplings to Photons in $h\rightarrow 4\ell$ at the LHC

We explore the sensitivity of the Higgs decay to four leptons, the so-called golden channel, to higher dimensional loop-induced couplings of the Higgs boson to $ZZ$, $Zγ$, and $γγ$, allowing for general CP mixtures. The larger standard model tree level coupling $hZ^μZ_μ$ is the dominant "background" for the loop induced couplings. However this large background interferes with the smaller loop induced couplings, enhancing the sensitivity. We perform a maximum likelihood analysis based on analytic expressions of the fully differential decay width for $h\to 4\ell$ ($4\ell \equiv 2e2μ, 4e, 4μ$) including all interference effects. We find that the spectral shapes induced by Higgs couplings to photons are particularly different than the $hZ^μZ_μ$ background leading to enhanced sensitivity to these couplings. We show that even if the $h\toγγ$ and $h\to 4\ell$ rates agree with that predicted by the Standard Model, the golden channel has the potential to probe both the CP nature as well as the overall sign of the Higgs coupling to photons well before the end of high-luminosity LHC running ($\sim$3 ab$^{-1}$).

Technical Note for 8D Likelihood Effective Higgs Couplings Extraction Framework in the Golden Channel

In this technical note we present technical details on various aspects of the framework introduced in arXiv:1401.2077 aimed at extracting effective Higgs couplings in the $h\to 4\ell$ `golden channel'. Since it is the primary feature of the framework, we focus in particular on the convolution integral which takes us from `truth' level to `detector' level and the numerical and analytic techniques used to obtain it. We also briefly discuss other aspects of the framework.
