Fractional AC Josephson effect in a topological insulator proximitized by a self-formed superconductor

A lateral Josephson junction in which the surface of a 3D topological insulator serves as the weak link should support topologically protected excitations related to Majorana fermions. The resulting $4π$-periodic current-phase relationship could be detected under high-frequency excitation by the suppression of odd Shapiro steps. Here, we demonstrate such devices through the self-formation of a Pd-Te superconducting layer from a telluride topological insulator, and observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps. Other devices, including those where the Pd-Te layer is bolstered by an additional Al layer, show no suppression of Shapiro steps, a difference supported by simulations. Though we rule out the known trivial causes of suppressed Shapiro steps in our devices, we nevertheless argue that corroborating measurements and disorder-aware theoretical descriptions of these systems are needed before confidently claiming the observation of Majorana states.

Semiclassical approach to spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic S=1 chain

Motivated by recent experimental progress in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet NiNb$_2$O$_6$, we study the spin dynamics of an S=1 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy by using a semiclassical molecular dynamics approach. This system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state under a transverse magnetic field, and the magnetic responses reflecting this transition is well described by our semiclassical method. We show that at low-temperature the transverse component of the dynamical structure factor depicts clearly the magnon dispersion, and the longitudinal component exhibits two continua associated with single- and two-magnon excitations, respectively. These spin excitation spectra show interesting temperature dependence as effects of magnon interactions. Our findings shed light on experimental detection of spin excitations in a large class of quasi-one-dimensional magnets.

WebApp1K: A Practical Code-Generation Benchmark for Web App Development

We introduce WebApp1K, a practical code-generation benchmark to measure LLM ability to develop web apps. This benchmark aims to calibrate LLM output and aid the models to progressively improve code correctness and functionality. The benchmark is lightweight and easy to run. We present the initial version of WebApp1K, and share our findings of running the benchmark against the latest frontier LLMs. First, open source LLMs deliver impressive performance, closely trailing behind GPT-4o and Claude 3.5. Second, model size has strong correlation with code correctness. Third, no prompting techniques have been found to lift performance either universally to all models, or significantly to a single model.

Region of Interest Detection in Melanocytic Skin Tumor Whole Slide Images -- Nevus & Melanoma

Automated region of interest detection in histopathological image analysis is a challenging and important topic with tremendous potential impact on clinical practice. The deep-learning methods used in computational pathology may help us to reduce costs and increase the speed and accuracy of cancer diagnosis. We started with the UNC Melanocytic Tumor Dataset cohort that contains 160 hematoxylin and eosin whole-slide images of primary melanomas (86) and nevi (74). We randomly assigned 80% (134) as a training set and built an in-house deep-learning method to allow for classification, at the slide level, of nevi and melanomas. The proposed method performed well on the other 20% (26) test dataset; the accuracy of the slide classification task was 92.3% and our model also performed well in terms of predicting the region of interest annotated by the pathologists, showing excellent performance of our model on melanocytic skin tumors. Even though we tested the experiments on the skin tumor dataset, our work could also be extended to other medical image detection problems to benefit the clinical evaluation and diagnosis of different tumors.

Low-energy spin dynamics in a Kitaev material Na3Ni2BiO6 investigated by NMR

We performed 23Na NMR and magnetization measurements on an S = 1, quasi-2D honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na3Ni2BiO6. A large positive Curie-Weiss constant of 22.9 K is observed. The NMR spectra at low fields are consistent with a "zigzag" magnetic order, indicating a large easy-axis anisotropy. With field applied along the c* axis, the NMR spectra confirm the existence of a 1/3-magnetization plateau phase between 5.1 T and 7.1 T. The transition from the zigzag order to the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase is also found to be a first-order type. A monotonic decrease of the spin gap is revealed in the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase, which reaches zero at a quantum critical field Hc = 8.35 T before entering the fully polarized phase. These data suggest the existence of exchange frustration in the system along with strong ferromagnetic interactions, hosting the possibility for Kitaev physics. Besides, well below the ordered phase, the 1/T1 at high fields shows either a level off or an enhancement upon cooling below 3 K, which suggests the existence of low-energy fluctuations.

Superionic Fluoride Gate Dielectrics with Low Diffusion Barrier for Advanced Electronics

Exploration of new dielectrics with large capacitive coupling is an essential topic in modern electronics when conventional dielectrics suffer from the leakage issue near breakdown limit. To address this looming challenge, we demonstrate that rare-earth-metal fluorides with extremely-low ion migration barriers can generally exhibit an excellent capacitive coupling over 20 $μ$F cm$^{-2}$ (with an equivalent oxide thickness of ~0.15 nm and a large effective dielectric constant near 30) and great compatibility with scalable device manufacturing processes. Such static dielectric capability of superionic fluorides is exemplified by MoS$_2$ transistors exhibiting high on/off current ratios over 10$^8$, ultralow subthreshold swing of 65 mV dec$^{-1}$, and ultralow leakage current density of ~10$^{-6}$ A cm$^{-2}$. Therefore, the fluoride-gated logic inverters can achieve significantly higher static voltage gain values, surpassing ~167, compared to conventional dielectric. Furthermore, the application of fluoride gating enables the demonstration of NAND, NOR, AND, and OR logic circuits with low static energy consumption. Notably, the superconductor-to-insulator transition at the clean-limit Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ can also be realized through fluoride gating. Our findings highlight fluoride dielectrics as a pioneering platform for advanced electronics applications and for tailoring emergent electronic states in condensed matters.

Molecular intercalation in the van der Waals antiferromagnets FePS3 and NiPS3

We have performed electrochemical treatment of the van der Waals antiferromagnetic materials FePS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$ with the ionic liquid EMIM-BF$_4$, achieving significant molecular intercalation. Mass analysis of the intercalated compounds, EMIM$_x$-FePS$_3$ and EMIM$_x$-NiPS$_3$, indicated respective intercalation levels, $x$, of approximately 27\% and 37\%, and X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated a massive (over 50\%) enhancement of the $c$-axis lattice parameters. To investigate the consequences of these changes for the magnetic properties, we performed magnetic susceptibility and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of both systems. For EMIM$_x$-FePS$_3$, intercalation reduces the magnetic ordering temperature from $T_N = 120$~K to 78~K, and we find a spin gap in the antiferromagnetic phase that drops from 45~K to 30~K. For EMIM$_x$-NiPS$_3$, the ordering temperature is almost unaffected (changing from 148~K to 145~K), but a change towards nearly isotropic spin fluctuations suggests an alteration of the magnetic Hamiltonian. Such relatively modest changes, given that the huge extension of the $c$ axes is expected to cause a very strong suppression any interlayer interactions, point unequivocally to the conclusion that the magnetic properties of both parent compounds are determined solely by two-dimensional (2D), intralayer physics. The changes in transition temperatures and low-temperature spin dynamics in both compounds therefore indicate that intercalation also results in a significant modulation of the intralayer magnetic interactions, which we propose is due to charge doping and localization on the P sites. Our study offers chemical intercalation with ionic liquids as an effective method to control not only the interlayer but also the intralayer interactions in quasi-2D magnetic materials.

NMR evidence of spinon localization in kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_x$]

We performed nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_{x}$]. No significant NMR spectral broadening is found in the Br center peak from 1 K down to 0.05 K, indicating absence of static antiferromagnetic ordering. In contrast to signatures of dominant 2D kagome antiferromagnetic fluctuations at temperature above 30 K, both the Knight shift $K_{\rm{n}}$ and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ increase when the sample is cooled from 30 K to 8 K, which can be attributed to the scattering of spin excitations by strong non-magnetic impurities. Unusually, a hump is observed in $K_{\rm{n}}$ and $1/T_{2}$ close to 2 K (far below the exchange energy), which indicates the existence of excitations with a large density of states close to zero energy. These phenomena are reproduced by a mean-field simulation of Heisenberg model with bond-dependent exchange interactions, where the sign fluctuations in the spinon kinetic terms caused by impurities result in localization of spinons and an almost flat band close to the Fermi energy.

Field-induced phase transitions and quantum criticality in a honeycomb antiferromagnet Na3Co2SbO6

We performed 23Na NMR measurements on a single-domain crystal of the Kitaev material Na3Co2SbO6, with magnetic field applied along the crystalline a axis. A positive Curie-Weiss constant is obtained from the NMR Knight shift, which suggests the existence of ferromagnetic exchange couplings. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be suppressed at a field of 1.9 T. Inside the ordered phase, our data reveal two additional phase transitions. At 1.9 T, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/23T1 establishes a quantum critical behavior at high temperatures. However, at low temperatures, a gapped behavior is observed at the critical field, which suggests a weakly first-order transition instead and a possible field-induced quantum spin liquid. Our results reveal complex microscopic interactions in the system, which may help to search for possible quantum spin liquids.

Monofluorinated Ether Electrolyte with Acetal Backbone for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

High degree of fluorination for ether electrolytes has resulted in improved cycling stability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to stable SEI formation and good oxidative stability. However, the sluggish ion transport and environmental concerns of high fluorination degree drives the need to develop less fluorinated structures. Here, we introduce bis(2-fluoroethoxy)methane (F2DEM) which features monofluorination of the acetal backbone. High coulombic efficiency (CE) and stable long-term cycling in Li||Cu half cells can be achieved with F2DEM even under fast Li metal plating conditions. The performance of F2DEM is further compared with diethoxymethane (DEM) and 2-[2-(2,2-Difluoroethoxy)ethoxy]-1,1,1-Trifluoroethane (F5DEE). The structural similarity of DEM allows us to better probe the effects of monofluorination, while F5DEE is chosen as the one of the best performing LMB electrolytes for reference. The monofluorine substitution provides improved oxidation stability compared to non-fluorinated DEM, as demonstrated in the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and voltage holding experiments in Li||Pt and Li||Al cells. Higher ionic conductivity compared to F5DEE is also observed due to the decreased degree of fluorination. Furthermore, 1.75 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) / F2DEM displays significantly lower overpotential compared with the two reference electrolytes, which improves energy efficiency and enables its application in high-rate conditions. Comparative studies of F2DEM with DEM and F5DEE in anode-free (LiFePO4) LFP pouch cells and high-loading LFP coin cells with 20 μm excess Li further show improved capacity retention of F2DEM electrolyte.

Correlating Chemical Reaction and Mass Transport in Hydrogen-based Direct Reduction of Iron Oxide

Steelmaking contributes 8% to the total CO2 emissions globally, primarily due to coal-based iron ore reduction. Clean hydrogen-based ironmaking has variable performance because the dominant gas-solid reduction mechanism is set by the defects and pores inside the mm-nm sized oxide particles that change significantly as the reaction progresses. While these governing dynamics are essential to establish continuous flow of iron and its ores through reactors, the direct link between agglomeration and chemistry is still contested due to missing measurements. In this work, we directly measure the connection between chemistry and agglomeration in the smallest iron oxides relevant to magnetite ores. Using synthesized spherical 10-nm magnetite particles reacting in H2, we resolve the formation and consumption of wüstite (FeO) - the step most commonly attributed to agglomeration. Using X-ray scattering and microscopy, we resolve crystallographic anisotropy in the rate of the initial reaction, which becomes isotropic as the material sinters. Complementing with imaging, we demonstrate how the particles self-assemble, subsequently react and sinter into ~100x oblong grains. Our insights into how morphologically uniform iron oxide particles react and agglomerate H2 reduction enable future size-dependent models to effectively describe the multiscale iron ore reduction.

Energy System Digitization in the Era of AI: A Three-Layered Approach towards Carbon Neutrality

The transition towards carbon-neutral electricity is one of the biggest game changers in addressing climate change since it addresses the dual challenges of removing carbon emissions from the two largest sectors of emitters: electricity and transportation. The transition to a carbon-neutral electric grid poses significant challenges to conventional paradigms of modern grid planning and operation. Much of the challenge arises from the scale of the decision making and the uncertainty associated with the energy supply and demand. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could potentially have a transformative impact on accelerating the speed and scale of carbon-neutral transition, as many decision making processes in the power grid can be cast as classic, though challenging, machine learning tasks. We point out that to amplify AI's impact on carbon-neutral transition of the electric energy systems, the AI algorithms originally developed for other applications should be tailored in three layers of technology, markets, and policy.

Region of Interest Detection in Melanocytic Skin Tumor Whole Slide Images

Automated region of interest detection in histopathological image analysis is a challenging and important topic with tremendous potential impact on clinical practice. The deep-learning methods used in computational pathology help us to reduce costs and increase the speed and accuracy of regions of interest detection and cancer diagnosis. In this work, we propose a patch-based region of interest detection method for melanocytic skin tumor whole-slide images. We work with a dataset that contains 165 primary melanomas and nevi Hematoxylin and Eosin whole-slide images and build a deep-learning method. The proposed method performs well on a hold-out test data set including five TCGA-SKCM slides (accuracy of 93.94\% in slide classification task and intersection over union rate of 41.27\% in the region of interest detection task), showing the outstanding performance of our model on melanocytic skin tumor. Even though we test the experiments on the skin tumor dataset, our work could also be extended to other medical image detection problems, such as various tumors' classification and prediction, to help and benefit the clinical evaluation and diagnosis of different tumors.

Proximate deconfined quantum critical point in SrCu2(BO3)2

The deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) represents a paradigm shift in quantum matter studies, presenting a "beyond Landau" scenario for order--order transitions. Its experimental realization, however, has remained elusive. Using high-pressure $^{11}$B NMR measurements on the quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, we here demonstrate a magnetic-field induced plaquette-singlet to antiferromagnetic transition above 1.8 GPa at a remarkably low temperature, $T_{\rm c}\simeq 0.07$ K. First-order signatures of the transition weaken with increasing pressure, and we observe quantum critical scaling at the highest pressure, 2.4 GPa. Supported by model calculations, we suggest that these observations can be explained by a proximate DQCP inducing critical quantum fluctuations and emergent O(3) symmetry of the order parameters. Our findings take the DQCP from a theoretical concept to a concrete experimental platform.

Using EBGAN for Anomaly Intrusion Detection

As an active network security protection scheme, intrusion detection system (IDS) undertakes the important responsibility of detecting network attacks in the form of malicious network traffic. Intrusion detection technology is an important part of IDS. At present, many scholars have carried out extensive research on intrusion detection technology. However, developing an efficient intrusion detection method for massive network traffic data is still difficult. Since Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have powerful modeling capabilities for complex high-dimensional data, they provide new ideas for addressing this problem. In this paper, we put forward an EBGAN-based intrusion detection method, IDS-EBGAN, that classifies network records as normal traffic or malicious traffic. The generator in IDS-EBGAN is responsible for converting the original malicious network traffic in the training set into adversarial malicious examples. This is because we want to use adversarial learning to improve the ability of discriminator to detect malicious traffic. At the same time, the discriminator adopts Autoencoder model. During testing, IDS-EBGAN uses reconstruction error of discriminator to classify traffic records.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in flat-band Kagome compounds Pd$_3$P$_2$(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_8$

We performed high-pressure transport studies on the flat-band Kagome compounds, Pd$_3$P$_2$(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_8$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25), with a diamond anvil cell. For both compounds, the resistivity exhibits an insulating behavior with pressure up to 17 GPa. With pressure above 20 GPa, a metallic behavior is observed at high temperatures in Pd$_3$P$_2$S$_8$, and superconductivity emerges at low temperatures. The onset temperature of superconducting transition $T_{\rm C}$ rises monotonically from 2 K to 4.8 K and does not saturate with pressure up to 43 GPa. For the Se-doped compound Pd$_3$P$_2$(S$_{0.75}$Se$_{0.25}$)$_8$, the $T_{\rm C}$ is about 1.5 K higher than that of the undoped one over the whole pressure range, and reaches 6.4 K at 43 GPa. The upper critical field with field applied along the $c$ axis at typical pressures is about 50$\%$ of the Pauli limit, suggesting a 3D superconductivity. The Hall coefficient in the metallic phase is low and exhibits a peaked behavior at about 30 K, which suggests either a multi-band electronic structure or an electron correlation effect in the system.

Field-induced antiferromagnetism and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior in the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8

We investigate the low-temperature properties of the Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under a longitudinal magnetic field by susceptibility and $^{51}$V NMR measurements. The bulk susceptibility $χ$ shows an onset of long-range Ising-antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and the suppression of the order by field with the Néel temperature dropped from 5.1~K to 2~K when field increases from 0.1~T to 4~T. The suppression of the AFM order by the field is also observed by the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation $1/T_1$. At fields above 4~T, $χ$ shows a low-temperature upturn, which is consistent with the onset of a transverse antiferromagnetic order as supported by the quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A line splitting in the NMR spectra is also observed at high temperatures. We show that the line split characterizes the onset of a short-range transverse antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments orientated along the crystalline [110]/[1$\bar1$0] directions. The $1/T_1$ data at higher temperature show a power-law behavior $1/T_1{\sim}T^α$, which is consistent with the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior. With increasing the field, the power-law exponent $α$ changes from negative to positive, which clearly shows an inversion of the Luttinger exponent $η$, where the dominant low-energy spin fluctuations switch from the longitudinal type to the transverse type at a high field of 7~T.

Layer-by-layer growth of bilayer graphene single-crystals enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity

Direct growth of large-area vertically stacked two-dimensional (2D) van der Waal (vdW) materials is a prerequisite for their high-end applications in integrated electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Currently, centimetre- to even metre-scale monolayers of single-crystal graphene (MLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been achieved by epitaxial growth on various single-crystalline substrates. However, in principle, this success in monolayer epitaxy seems extremely difficult to be replicated to bi- or few-layer growth, as the full coverage of the first layer was believed to terminate the reactivity of those adopting catalytic metal surfaces. Here, we report an exceptional layer-by-layer chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth of large size bi-layer graphene single-crystals, enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity from platinum (Pt) surfaces to the outermost graphene layers. In-situ growth and real-time surveillance experiments, under well-controlled environments, unambiguously verify that the growth does follow the layer-by-layer mode on open surfaces of MLG/Pt(111). First-principles calculations indicate that the transmittal of catalytic activity is allowed by an appreciable electronic hybridisation between graphene overlayers and Pt surfaces, enabling catalytic dissociation of hydrocarbons and subsequently direct graphitisation of their radicals on the outermost sp2 carbon surface. This self-transmitting catalytic activity is also proven to be robust for tube-furnace CVD in fabricating single-crystalline graphene bi-, tri- and tetra-layers, as well as h-BN few-layers. Our findings offer an exceptional strategy for potential controllable, layer-by-layer and wafer-scale growth of vertically stacked few-layered 2D single crystals.
