Toric Degenerations of GIT Quotients, Chow Quotients, and $\bar{M_{0,n}$

We show that the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves can be flatly degenerated to a projective toric variety. We arrive at this by showing that the Chow quotients of the Grassmannians admit toric degenerations, which in turn, follows from a theorem that we prove for toric degenerations of more general Chow quotients. Along the way, we also argued that GIT quotient of a flat family is again flat. In particular, all GIT quotients of flag varieties by maximal tori can be flatly degenerated to projective toric varieties ([9] and [12]).

Quotients by Reductive Group, Borel Subgroup, Unipotent Group and Maximal Torus

Consider an algebraic action of a connected complex reductive algebraic group on a complex polarized projective variety. In this paper, we first introduce the nilpotent quotient, the quotient of the polarized projective variety by a maximal unipotent subgroup. Then, we introduce and investigate three induced actions: one by the reductive group, one by a Borel subgroup, and one by a maximal torus, respectively. Our main result is that there are natural correspondences among quotients of these three actions. In the end, we mention a possible application to the moduli spaces of parabolic bundles over algebraic curves for further research.

Geometric Invariant Theory and Birational Geometry

In this paper we will survey some recent developments in the last decade or so on variation of Geometric Invariant Theory and its applications to Birational Geometry such as the weak Factorization Theorems of nonsingular projective varieties and more generally projective varieties with finite quotient singularities. Along the way, we will also mention some progresses on birational geometry of hyperKähler manifolds as well as certain open problems and conjectures.

Factorization Theorem for Projective Varieties with Finite Quotient Singularities

In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.

Topological Aspects of Chow Quotients

This paper studies the canonical Chow quotient of a smooth projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. The main purpose is to give some topological interpretations and characterization of Chow quotient which have the advantage to be more intuitive and geometric. This is to be done over the field of complex numbers and in the languages that are familiar to topologists and differential geometers. More precisely, the main observation of this paper is that, over the field of complex numbers, the Chow quotient admits symplectic and other topological interpretations, namely, symplectically, the moduli spaces of stable orbits with prescribed momentum charges; and topologically, the moduli space of stable action-manifolds. In addition, we give a computable characterization of the Chow cycles of the Chow quotient, using the so-called perturbing-translating-specializing relation.

Toric degenerations of weight varieties and applications

We show that a weight variety, which is a quotient of a flag variety by the maximal torus, admits a flat degeneration to a toric variety. In particular, we show that the moduli spaces of spatial polygons degenerate to polarized toric varieties with the moment polytopes defined by the lengths of their diagonals. We extend these results to more general Flaschka-Millson hamiltonians on the quotients of products of projective spaces. We also study boundary toric divisors and certain real loci.

Stable Configurations of Linear Subspaces and Quotient Coherent Sheaves

In this paper we provide some stability criteria for systems of linear subspaces of $V \otimes W$ and for systems of quotient coherent sheaves, using, respectively, the Hilbert-Mumford numerical criterion and moment map. Along the way, we generalize the Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence [11] from point sets to sets of linear subspaces (of various dimensions). And, as an application, we provide some examples of $G$-ample cones without any top chambers. The results of this paper are based upon and/or generalize some earlier works of Klyachko [18], Totaro [28], Gelfand-MacPherson [11], Kapranov [17], Foth-Lozano [8], Simpson [24], Wang [30], Phong-Sturm [22], Zhang [32] and Luo [20], among others.

Toric morphisms and fibrations of toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces

Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be understood by the various restrictions of a line bundle with a section that defines the hypersurface. These general toric geometry discussions give rise to a computational scheme for the details of a toric morphism and the induced fibration of toric hypersurfaces therein. We apply this scheme to study the family of 4-dimensional elliptic Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces that appear in a recent work of Braun-Candelas-dlOssa-Grassi. The Maple codes that are employed for the computation are provided. Some directions for future work are listed in the end.

A Compactification of Open Varieties

In this paper we show a general method to compactify certain open varieties by adding normal crossing divisors. This is done by proving that {\it blowing up along an arrangement of subvarieties} can be carried out. Important examples such as Ulyanov's configuration spaces, spaces of holomorphic maps, etc., are covered. Intersection ring and (non-recursive) Hodge polynomails are computed. Further general structures arising from the blowup process are described and studied.

Combinatorics and Quotients of Toric Varieties

This paper studies two related subjects. One is some combinatorics arising from linear projections of polytopes and fans of cones. The other is quotient varieties of toric varieties. The relation is that projections of polytopes are related to quotients of projective toric varieties and projection of fans are related to quotients of general toric varieties. Despite its relation to geometry the first part is purely combinatorial and should be of interest in its own right.

HyperKähler Manifolds and Birational Transformations in dimension 4

We show that any birational map between projective hyperKähler manifolds of dimension 4 is composed of a sequence of simple flops or elementary Mukai transformations under the assumption that each irreducible component of the indeterminacy of the birational map is normal.

Mori Dream Spaces and GIT

The main goal of this paper is to study varieties with the best possible Mori theoretic properties (measured by the existence of a certain decomposition of the cone of effective divisors). We call such a variety a Mori Dream Space. There turn out to be many examples, including quasi-smooth projective toric (or more generally, spherical) varieties, many GIT quotients, and log Fano 3-folds. We characterize Mori dream spaces as GIT quotients of affine varieties by a torus in a manner generalizing Cox's construction of toric varieties as quotients of affine space. Via the quotient description, the chamber decomposition of the cone of divisors in Mori theory is naturally identified with the decomposition of the G-ample cone from geometric invariant theory. In particular every rational contraction of a Mori dream space comes from GIT, and all possible factorizations of a rational contraction can be read off from the chamber decomposition.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ may be considered as symplectic counterparts of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ and Kapranov's Chow quotient construction of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$. All these together brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$.

Birational Models of the Moduli Spaces of Stable Vector Bundles over Curves

We give a method to construct stable vector bundles whose rank divides the degree over curves of genus bigger than one. The method complements the one given by Newstead. Finally, we make some systematic remarks and observations in connection with rationality of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles.

Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients

Geometric Invariant Theory gives a method for constructing quotients for group actions on algebraic varieties which in many cases appear as moduli spaces parametrizing isomorphism classes of geometric objects (vector bundles, polarized varieties, etc.). The quotient depends on a choice of an ample linearized line bundle. Two choices are equivalent if they give rise to identical quotients. A priori, there are infinitely many choices since there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of linearized ample line bundles. Hence several fundamental questions naturally arise. Is the set of equivalence classes, and hence the set of non-isomorphic quotients, finite? How does the quotient vary under change of the equivalence class? In this paper we give partial answers to these questions in the case of actions of reductive algebraic groups on nonsingular projective algebraic varieties. We shall show that among ample line bundles which give projective geometric quotients there are only finitely many equivalence classes. These classes span certain convex subsets (chambers) in a certain convex cone in Euclidean space; and when we cross a wall separating one chamber from another, the corresponding quotient undergoes a birational transformation which is similar to a Mori flip.

Relative Geometric Invariant Theory and Universal Moduli Spaces

We expose in detail the principle that the relative geometric invariant theory of equivariant morphisms is related to the GIT for linearizations near the boundary of the $G$-effective ample cone. We then apply this principle to construct and reconstruct various universal moduli spaces. In particular, we constructed the universal moduli space over $\overline{M_g}$ of Simpson's $p$-semistable coherent sheaves and a canonical dominating morphism from the universal Hilbert scheme over $\overline{M_g}$ to a compactified universal Picard.
