3D Multi-system Bayesian Calibration with Energy Conservation to Study Rapidity-dependent Dynamics of Nuclear Collisions

Considerable information about the early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is encoded in the rapidity dependence of measurements. To leverage the large amount of experimental data, we perform a systematic analysis using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of multiple collision systems -- large and small, symmetric and asymmetric. Specifically, we perform fully 3D multi-stage hydrodynamic simulations initialized by a parameterized model for rapidity-dependent energy deposition, which we calibrate on the hadron multiplicity and anisotropic flow coefficients. We utilize Bayesian inference to constrain properties of the early- and late- time dynamics of the system, and highlight the impact of enforcing global energy conservation in our 3D model.

Hybrid Hadronization of Jet Showers from $e^++e^-$ to $A+A$ with JETSCAPE

In this talk we review jet production in a large variety of collision systems using the JETSCAPE event generator and Hybrid Hadronization. Hybrid Hadronization combines quark recombination, applicable when distances between partons in phase space are small, and string fragmentation appropriate for dilute parton systems. It can therefore smoothly describe the transition from very dilute parton systems like $e^++e^-$ to full $A+A$ collisions. We test this picture by using JETSCAPE to generate jets in various systems. Comparison to experimental data in $e^++e^-$ and $p+p$ collisions allows for a precise tuning of vacuum baseline parameters in JETSCAPE and Hybrid Hadronization. Proceeding to systems with jets embedded in a medium, we study in-medium hadronization for jet showers. We quantify the effects of an ambient medium, focusing in particular on the dependence on the collective flow and size of the medium. Our results clarify the effects we expect from in-medium hadronization of jets on observables like fragmentation functions, hadron chemistry and jet shape.

A multistage framework for studying the evolution of jets and high-$p_T$ probes in small collision systems

Understanding the modification of jets and high-$p_T$ probes in small systems requires the integration of soft and hard physics. We present recent developments in extending the JETSCAPE framework to build an event generator, which includes correlations between soft and hard partons, to study jet observables in small systems. The multi-scale physics of the collision is separated into different stages. Hard scatterings are first sampled at binary collision positions provided by the Glauber geometry. They are then propagated backward in space-time following an initial-state shower to obtain the initiating partons' energies and momenta before the collision. These energies and momenta are then subtracted from the incoming colliding nucleons for soft-particle production, modeled by the 3D-Glauber + hydrodynamics + hadronic transport framework. This new hybrid approach (X-SCAPE) includes non-trivial correlations between jet and soft particle productions in small systems. We calibrate this framework with the final state hadrons' $p_T$-spectra from low to high $p_T$ in $p$-$p$, and and then compare with the spectra in $p$-$Pb$ collisions from the LHC. We also present results for additional observables such as the distributions of event activity as a function of the hardest jet $p_T$ in forward and mid-rapidity for both $p$-$p$ and $p$-$Pb$ collisions.

Stacking designs: designing multi-fidelity computer experiments with target predictive accuracy

In an era where scientific experiments can be very costly, multi-fidelity emulators provide a useful tool for cost-efficient predictive scientific computing. For scientific applications, the experimenter is often limited by a tight computational budget, and thus wishes to (i) maximize predictive power of the multi-fidelity emulator via a careful design of experiments, and (ii) ensure this model achieves a desired error tolerance with some notion of confidence. Existing design methods, however, do not jointly tackle objectives (i) and (ii). We propose a novel stacking design approach that addresses both goals. A multi-level reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) interpolator is first introduced to build the emulator, under which our stacking design provides a sequential approach for designing multi-fidelity runs such that a desired prediction error of $ε> 0$ is met under regularity assumptions. We then prove a novel cost complexity theorem that, under this multi-level interpolator, establishes a bound on the computation cost (for training data simulation) needed to achieve a prediction bound of $ε$. This result provides novel insights on conditions under which the proposed multi-fidelity approach improves upon a conventional RKHS interpolator which relies on a single fidelity level. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of stacking designs in a suite of simulation experiments and an application to finite element analysis.

Conglomerate Multi-Fidelity Gaussian Process Modeling, with Application to Heavy-Ion Collisions

In an era where scientific experimentation is often costly, multi-fidelity emulation provides a powerful tool for predictive scientific computing. While there has been notable work on multi-fidelity modeling, existing models do not incorporate an important "conglomerate" property of multi-fidelity simulators, where the accuracies of different simulator components are controlled by different fidelity parameters. Such conglomerate simulators are widely encountered in complex nuclear physics and astrophysics applications. We thus propose a new CONglomerate multi-FIdelity Gaussian process (CONFIG) model, which embeds this conglomerate structure within a novel non-stationary covariance function. We show that the proposed CONFIG model can capture prior knowledge on the numerical convergence of conglomerate simulators, which allows for cost-efficient emulation of multi-fidelity systems. We demonstrate the improved predictive performance of CONFIG over state-of-the-art models in a suite of numerical experiments and two applications, the first for emulation of cantilever beam deflection and the second for emulating the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma, which was theorized to have filled the Universe shortly after the Big Bang.

Observation of nonlinear planar Hall effect in magnetic insulator/topological insulator heterostructures

Interfacing topological insulators (TIs) with magnetic insulators (MIs) has been widely used to study the interaction between topological surface states and magnetism. Previous transport studies typically interpret the suppression of weak antilocalization or appearance of the anomalous Hall effect as signatures of magnetic proximity effect (MPE) imposed to TIs. Here, we report the observation of nonlinear planar Hall effect (NPHE) in Bi2Se3 films grown on MI thulium and yttrium iron garnet (TmIG and YIG) substrates, which is an order of magnitude larger than that in Bi2Se3 grown on nonmagnetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate. The nonlinear Hall resistance in TmIG/Bi2Se3 depends linearly on the external magnetic field, while that in YIG/Bi2Se3 exhibits an extra hysteresis loop around zero field. The magnitude of the NPHE is found to scale inversely with carrier density. We speculate the observed NPHE is related to the MPE-induced exchange gap opening and out-of-plane spin textures in the TI surface states, which may be used as an alternative transport signature of the MPE in MI/TI heterostructures.

Evidence for charge and spin order in single crystals of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$

Charge and spin order is intimately related to superconductivity in copper oxide superconductors. To elucidate the competing orders in various nickel oxide compounds are crucial given the fact that superconductivity has been discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ films. Herein, we report structural, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic characterizations on single crystals of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ is metallic with mixed Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{3+}$ valent states. Resistivity measurements yield two transition-like kinks at $\sim$110 and 153 K, respectively. The kink at 153 K is further revealed from magnetization and specific heat measurements, indicative of the formation of charge and spin order. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ single crystals obtained from topochemical reduction of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are insulating and show an anomaly at $\sim$176 K on magnetic susceptibility. The transition-like behaviors of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ are analogous to the charge and spin order observed in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$, suggesting charge and spin order is a common feature in the ternary La-Ni-O system with mixed-valent states of nickel.

Negative Chemical Pressure Effect on Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave of Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2

This study demonstrates the design and synthesis of Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system by partial substitution of Ir with Zr acting as a negative chemical pressure. With the doping of Zr, the cell parameters significantly expand, signifying an effective negative chemical pressure. The experimental results found evidence that the charge density wave (CDW)-like order is immediately quenched by subtle Zr substitution for Ir and a classical dome-shape Tc(x) that peaked at 2.80 K can be observed. The optimal Cu0.5Ir0.95Zr0.05Te2 compound is a BCS-type superconductor and exhibits type-II SC. However, high Zr concentration can provoke disorder, inducing the reappearance of CDW order. The present study shows that the Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system may provide a new platform for further understanding of multiple electronic orders in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Electron-Electron Interaction and Weak Antilocalization Effect in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Superconductor

In disordered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor, both the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and disorder show remarkable effects on superconductivity. However, the features of SOC and disorder were rarely detected directly. Here we report the quantum transport behaviors arising from the interplay of SOC and disorder in the TMD superconductor 1T-NbSeTe. Before entering the superconducting state, the single crystal at low temperature shows a resistivity upturn, which is T1/2 dependent and insensitive to the applied magnetic fields. The magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures shows a H1/2 dependence at high magnetic fields. The characteristics are in good agreement with the electron-electron interaction (EEI) in a disordered conductor. In addition, the upturn changes and MR at low magnetic fields suggest the contribution of weak antilocalization (WAL) effect arising from the strong SOC in the material. Moreover, the quantitative analyses of the transport features in different samples imply anomalous disorder-enhanced superconductivity that needs to be further understood. The results reveal the disorder enhanced EEI and the strong SOC induced WAL effect in 1T-NbSeTe, which illustrate the resistivity minimum in the widely studied doped superconductors. The work also provides insights into the disorder effect on the superconductivity.

Efficient emulation of relativistic heavy ion collisions with transfer learning

Measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) can be used to study the properties of quark-gluon plasma. Systematic constraints on these properties must combine measurements from different collision systems and methodically account for experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Such studies require a vast number of costly numerical simulations. While computationally inexpensive surrogate models ("emulators") can be used to efficiently approximate the predictions of heavy ion simulations across a broad range of model parameters, training a reliable emulator remains a computationally expensive task. We use transfer learning to map the parameter dependencies of one model emulator onto another, leveraging similarities between different simulations of heavy ion collisions. By limiting the need for large numbers of simulations to only one of the emulators, this technique reduces the numerical cost of comprehensive uncertainty quantification when studying multiple collision systems and exploring different models.

Unusual Scaling of Kondo Spin Relaxation

The relation between the Kondo spin relaxation rate $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and the Kondo momentum relaxation rate $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is explored by using nonlocal spin valves with submicron copper channels that contain dilute iron impurities. A linear relation between $ {τ_{sK}}^{-1} $ and $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ is established under varying temperatures. However, under varying impurity concentrations, ${τ_{sK}}^{-1}$ remains nearly constant despite variation of $ {τ_{eK}}^{-1} $ by a factor of 10. This surprising relation can be understood by considering spin relaxation through overlapping Kondo screening clouds and supports the physical existence of the elusive Kondo clouds.

Nonlocal electrical detection of spin accumulation generated by Anomalous Hall effects in mesoscopic Ni_81Fe_19 films

Spin accumulation generated by the anomalous Hall effects (AHE) in mesoscopic ferromagnetic Ni81Fe19 (permalloy or Py) films is detected electrically by a nonlocal method. The reciprocal phenomenon, inverse spin Hall effects (ISHE), can also be generated and detected all-electrically in the same structure. For accurate quantitative analysis, a series of nonlocal AHE/ISHE structures and supplementary structures are fabricated on each sample substrate to account for statistical variations and to accurately determine all essential physical parameters in-situ. By exploring Py thicknesses of 4 nm, 8 nm, and 12 nm, the Py spin diffusion length λ_Py is found to be much shorter than the film thicknesses. The product of λ_Py and the Py spin Hall angle α_SH is determined to be independent of thickness and resistivity: α_SH*λ_Py= (0.066 +/- 0.009) nm at 5 K and (0.041 +/- 0.010) nm at 295 K. These values are comparable to those obtained from mesoscopic Pt films.

Anisotropic Spin Relaxation Induced by Surface Spin-Orbit Effects

It is a common perception that the transport of a spin current in polycrystalline metal is isotropic and independent of the polarization direction, even though spin current is a tensorlike quantity and its polarization direction is a key variable. We demonstrate surprising anisotropic spin relaxation in mesoscopic polycrystalline Cu channels in nonlocal spin valves. For directions in the substrate plane, the spin-relaxation length is longer for spins parallel to the Cu channel than for spins perpendicular to it, by as much as 9% at 10 K. Spin-orbit effects on the surfaces of Cu channels can account for this anisotropic spin relaxation. The finding suggests novel tunability of spin current, not only by its polarization direction but also by electrostatic gating.

An Investigation into Exoplanet Transits and Uncertainties

A simple transit model is described along with tests of this model against published results for 4 exoplanet systems (Kepler-1, 2, 8, and 77). Data from the Kepler mission are used. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is applied to obtain realistic error estimates. Optimization of limb darkening coefficients is subject to data quality. It is more likely for MCMC to derive an empirical limb darkening coefficient for light curves with S/N (signal to noise) above 15. Finally, the model is applied to Kepler data for 4 Kepler candidate systems (KOI 760.01, 767.01, 802.01, and 824.01) with previously unpublished results. Error estimates for these systems are obtained via the MCMC method.

Style Transfer for Anime Sketches with Enhanced Residual U-net and Auxiliary Classifier GAN

Recently, with the revolutionary neural style transferring methods, creditable paintings can be synthesized automatically from content images and style images. However, when it comes to the task of applying a painting's style to an anime sketch, these methods will just randomly colorize sketch lines as outputs and fail in the main task: specific style tranfer. In this paper, we integrated residual U-net to apply the style to the gray-scale sketch with auxiliary classifier generative adversarial network (AC-GAN). The whole process is automatic and fast, and the results are creditable in the quality of art style as well as colorization.

Spin Hall effects in mesoscopic Pt films with high resistivity

The energy efficiency of the spin Hall effects (SHE) can be enhanced if the electrical conductivity is decreased without sacrificing the spin Hall conductivity. The resistivity of Pt films can be increased to 150-300 μΩ*cm by mesoscopic lateral confinement, thereby decreasing the conductivity. The SHE and inverse spin Hall effects (ISHE) in these mesoscopic Pt films are explored at 10 K by using the nonlocal spin injection/detection method. All relevant physical quantities are determined in-situ on the same substrate, and a quantitative approach is developed to characterize all processes effectively. Extensive measurements with various Pt thickness values reveal an upper limit for the Pt spin diffusion length: λ_pt<0.8 nm. The average product of λ_pt and the Pt spin Hall angle α_H is substantial: α_H*λ_pt=(0.142 +/- 0.040)nm for 4 nm thick Pt, though a gradual decrease is observed at larger Pt thickness. The results suggest enhanced spin Hall effects in resistive mesoscopic Pt films.

An Anonymous Communication Scheme based on Ring Signature in VANETs

Vehicular ad hoc networks allow vehicles to connect themselves as networks so that cars could communicate with each other. This paper introduces an anonymous communication scheme providing integrity protection, multi-level privacy and auditability. The scheme is based on a certificateless ring signature proposed in this paper, which is contributed to reduce the length of the signature and simplify the key management. In our scheme, vehicles can compose the anonymous group without the help of road-side infrastructure or central authority. The computation overhead is close to a normal signature scheme, so it is efficient in most application scenarios. We also present a small-scale implementation to show the availability of the prototype system.

Towards Refactoring the DMF to Support Jini and JMS DMS in GIPSY

In this paper we report on our re-engineering effort to refactor and unify two somewhat disjoint Java distributed middleware technologies -- Jini and JMS -- used in the implementation of the Demand Migration System (DMS). In doing so, we refactor their parent Demand Migration Framework (DMF), within the General Intensional Programming System (GIPSY). The complex Java-based GIPSY project is used to investigate on the intensional and hybrid programming paradigms.
