Robust Flat Bands with Tunable Energies in Honeycomb Superlattices

Flat bands in lattice models have provided useful platforms for studying strong correlation and topological physics. Recently, honeycomb superlattices have been shown to host flat bands that persist in the presence of local perturbations respecting lattice symmetries. We analytically derive the flat band energies in the presence of longer range hopping and find that the energies of flat bands are tunable by these perturbations. In real space, the wave function is constructed from standing waves on each honeycomb edge, allowing the construction of plaquette and loop eigenstates due to destructive interference in real space that give rise to the flat bands robust against long range hoppings.

Viral Pneumonia Screening on Chest X-ray Images Using Confidence-Aware Anomaly Detection

Cluster of viral pneumonia occurrences during a short period of time may be a harbinger of an outbreak or pandemic, like SARS, MERS, and recent COVID-19. Rapid and accurate detection of viral pneumonia using chest X-ray can be significantly useful in large-scale screening and epidemic prevention, particularly when other chest imaging modalities are less available. Viral pneumonia often have diverse causes and exhibit notably different visual appearances on X-ray images. The evolution of viruses and the emergence of novel mutated viruses further result in substantial dataset shift, which greatly limits the performance of classification approaches. In this paper, we formulate the task of differentiating viral pneumonia from non-viral pneumonia and healthy controls into an one-class classification-based anomaly detection problem, and thus propose the confidence-aware anomaly detection (CAAD) model, which consists of a shared feature extractor, an anomaly detection module, and a confidence prediction module. If the anomaly score produced by the anomaly detection module is large enough or the confidence score estimated by the confidence prediction module is small enough, we accept the input as an anomaly case (i.e., viral pneumonia). The major advantage of our approach over binary classification is that we avoid modeling individual viral pneumonia classes explicitly and treat all known viral pneumonia cases as anomalies to reinforce the one-class model. The proposed model outperforms binary classification models on the clinical X-VIRAL dataset that contains 5,977 viral pneumonia (no COVID-19) cases, 18,619 non-viral pneumonia cases, and 18,774 healthy controls.

Distinguishing limit of Bell states for any $n$-photon $D$-dimensional hyperentanglement

Bell state measurement is crucial to quantum information protocols, but it is impossible to unambiguously distinguish all the Bell states encoded in multi-photon using only linear optics. There is a maximum number of distinguished Bell states, i.e. distinguising limit which is very important for increasing the channel capacity of quantum communications. In this paper, we separate $n$-photon $D$-dimensional hyperentanglement into two groups. For the first group of $U$ ($G_1$), we obtain the limit ${N_1} = nD - (n - 1)$, which can be applied for both bosons' and fermions' cases. We further discuss the limit $N$ for any $nD$ system with the second group of $U$ ($G_2$), inferring that at least ${D^{n - 1}}$ Bell states can be distinguished due to the symmetry of Bell states. Obviously, ${N_1} \le {N_2}$ for those systems with $n>2$. Finally, we theoretically design an optical setup for Bell state measurement of two-photon eight-dimensional hyperentanglement of spin, path and orbital angular momentum (OAM) and distinguish 15 classes of 64 Bell states. Our results provide a theoretical basis and practical reference to increase the channel capacity of the quantum communication.

Broad-Spectral-Range Sustainability and Controllable Excitation of Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons in $α$-MoO3

Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) in orthorhombic-phase molybdenum trioxide ($α$-MoO3) show in-plane hyperbolicity, great wavelength compression and ultra-long lifetime, therefore holding great potential in nanophotonic applications. However, its polaritonic response in the far-infrared (FIR) range has long remained unexplored due to challenges in experimental characterization. Here, using monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), we probe HPhPs in $α$-MoO3 in both mid-infrared (MIR) and FIR frequencies and correlate their behaviors with microstructures and orientations. We find that low-structural symmetry leads to various phonon modes and multiple Reststrahlen bands (RBs) over a broad spectral range (over 70 meV) and in different directions (55-63 meV and 119-125 meV along b axis, 68-106 meV along c axis, 101-121 meV along a axis). These HPhPs can be selectively excited by controlling the direction of swift electrons. These findings provide new opportunities in nanophotonic and optoelectronic applications such as directed light propagation, hyperlenses and heat transfer.

$\mathbb{Z}_2$ Topologically Obstructed Superconducting Order

We propose a class of topological superconductivity in which the pairing order is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically obstructed in a three-dimensional time-reversal invariant system. When two Fermi surfaces are related by time-reversal and mirror symmetries, such as those in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Dirac semimetal, the inter-Fermi-surface pairing in the weak-coupling regime inherits the band topological obstruction. As a result, the pairing order cannot be well-defined over the entire Fermi surface and forms a time-reversal invariant generalization of U($1$) monopole harmonic pairing. A tight-binding model of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topologically obstructed superconductor is constructed based on a doped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Dirac semimetal and exhibits nodal pairings. At an open boundary, the system exhibits a time-reversal pair of topologically protected surface states.

Experimental parameters, combined dynamics, and nonlinearity of a Magnonic-Opto-Electronic Oscillator (MOEO)

We report the construction and characterization of a comprehensive magnonic-opto-electronic oscillator (MOEO) system based on 1550-nm photonics and yttirum iron garnet (YIG) magnonics. The system exhibits a rich and synergistic parameter space because of the ability to control individual photonic, electronic, and magnonic components. Taking advantage of the spin wave dispersion of YIG, the frequency self-generation as well as the related nonlinear processes become sensitive to the external magnetic field. Besides being known as a narrowband filter and a delay element, the YIG delayline possesses spin wave modes that can be controlled to mix with the optoelectronic modes to generate higher-order harmonic beating modes. With the high sensitivity and external tunability, the MOEO system may find usefulness in sensing applications in magnetism and spintronics beyond optoelectronics and photonics.

Semiparametric regression of mean residual life with censoring and covariate dimension reduction

We propose a new class of semiparametric regression models of mean residual life for censored outcome data. The models, which enable us to estimate the expected remaining survival time and generalize commonly used mean residual life models, also conduct covariate dimension reduction. Using the geometric approaches in semiparametrics literature and the martingale properties with survival data, we propose a flexible inference procedure that relaxes the parametric assumptions on the dependence of mean residual life on covariates and how long a patient has lived. We show that the estimators for the covariate effects are root-$n$ consistent, asymptotically normal, and semiparametrically efficient. With the unspecified mean residual life function, we provide a nonparametric estimator for predicting the residual life of a given subject, and establish the root-$n$ consistency and asymptotic normality for this estimator. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed estimators. We apply the method to analyze a national kidney transplantation dataset to further demonstrate the utility of the work.

Lets Play Music: Audio-driven Performance Video Generation

We propose a new task named Audio-driven Per-formance Video Generation (APVG), which aims to synthesizethe video of a person playing a certain instrument guided bya given music audio clip. It is a challenging task to gener-ate the high-dimensional temporal consistent videos from low-dimensional audio modality. In this paper, we propose a multi-staged framework to achieve this new task to generate realisticand synchronized performance video from given music. Firstly,we provide both global appearance and local spatial informationby generating the coarse videos and keypoints of body and handsfrom a given music respectively. Then, we propose to transformthe generated keypoints to heatmap via a differentiable spacetransformer, since the heatmap offers more spatial informationbut is harder to generate directly from audio. Finally, wepropose a Structured Temporal UNet (STU) to extract bothintra-frame structured information and inter-frame temporalconsistency. They are obtained via graph-based structure module, and CNN-GRU based high-level temporal module respectively forfinal video generation. Comprehensive experiments validate theeffectiveness of our proposed framework.

Learning Representations from Audio-Visual Spatial Alignment

We introduce a novel self-supervised pretext task for learning representations from audio-visual content. Prior work on audio-visual representation learning leverages correspondences at the video level. Approaches based on audio-visual correspondence (AVC) predict whether audio and video clips originate from the same or different video instances. Audio-visual temporal synchronization (AVTS) further discriminates negative pairs originated from the same video instance but at different moments in time. While these approaches learn high-quality representations for downstream tasks such as action recognition, their training objectives disregard spatial cues naturally occurring in audio and visual signals. To learn from these spatial cues, we tasked a network to perform contrastive audio-visual spatial alignment of 360° video and spatial audio. The ability to perform spatial alignment is enhanced by reasoning over the full spatial content of the 360° video using a transformer architecture to combine representations from multiple viewpoints. The advantages of the proposed pretext task are demonstrated on a variety of audio and visual downstream tasks, including audio-visual correspondence, spatial alignment, action recognition, and video semantic segmentation.

Exploiting Style and Attention in Real-World Super-Resolution

Real-world image super-resolution (SR) is a challenging image translation problem. Low-resolution (LR) images are often generated by various unknown transformations rather than by applying simple bilinear down-sampling on high-resolution (HR) images. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel pipeline which exploits style and attention mechanism in real-world SR. Our pipeline consists of a style Variational Autoencoder (styleVAE) and a SR network incorporated with attention mechanism. To get real-world-like low-quality images paired with the HR images, we design the styleVAE to transfer the complex nuisance factors in real-world LR images to the generated LR images. We also use mutual information estimation (MI) to get better style information. For our SR network, we firstly propose a global attention residual block to learn long-range dependencies in images. Then another local attention residual block is proposed to enforce the attention of SR network moving to local areas of images in which texture detail will be filled. It is worth noticing that styleVAE can be presented in a plug-and-play manner and thus can help to improve the generalization and robustness of our SR method as well as other SR methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method surpasses the state-of-the-art work, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Informative Sample Mining Network for Multi-Domain Image-to-Image Translation

The performance of multi-domain image-to-image translation has been significantly improved by recent progress in deep generative models. Existing approaches can use a unified model to achieve translations between all the visual domains. However, their outcomes are far from satisfying when there are large domain variations. In this paper, we reveal that improving the sample selection strategy is an effective solution. To select informative samples, we dynamically estimate sample importance during the training of Generative Adversarial Networks, presenting Informative Sample Mining Network. We theoretically analyze the relationship between the sample importance and the prediction of the global optimal discriminator. Then a practical importance estimation function for general conditions is derived. Furthermore, we propose a novel multi-stage sample training scheme to reduce sample hardness while preserving sample informativeness. Extensive experiments on a wide range of specific image-to-image translation tasks are conducted, and the results demonstrate our superiority over current state-of-the-art methods.

An Adversarial Attack Defending System for Securing In-Vehicle Networks

In a modern vehicle, there are over seventy Electronics Control Units (ECUs). For an in-vehicle network, ECUs communicate with each other by following a standard communication protocol, such as Controller Area Network (CAN). However, an attacker can easily access the in-vehicle network to compromise ECUs through a WLAN or Bluetooth. Though there are various deep learning (DL) methods suggested for securing in-vehicle networks, recent studies on adversarial examples have shown that attackers can easily fool DL models. In this research, we further explore adversarial examples in an in-vehicle network. We first discover and implement two adversarial attack models that are harmful to a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM)-based detection model used in the in-vehicle network. Then, we propose an Adversarial Attack Defending System (AADS) for securing an in-vehicle network. Specifically, we focus on brake-related ECUs in an in-vehicle network. Our experimental results demonstrate that adversaries can easily attack the LSTM-based detection model with a success rate of over 98%, and the proposed AADS achieves over 99% accuracy for detecting adversarial attacks.

Direct Imaging of Resonant Phonon-Magnon Coupling

Direct detection of phonons is important for the investigation of information interconversion between the resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. Here we report resonant coupling of magnons and phonons, which can be directly visualized by using micro focused Brillouin light scattering in Ni/LiNbO3 hybrid heterostructures. The patterns of surface acoustic wave phonons, originating from the interference between the original wave ψ0(A_0,k) and reflected wave ψ1(A_1,-k), can be modulated by magnetic field due to the magnon-phonon coupling. By analyzing the information of phonons obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy, the properties of the magnon system (Ni film), e.g., ferromagnetic resonance field and resonance linewidth can be determined. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.

Cutoff $\rm AdS_3$ versus $\rm T\bar{T}$ $\rm CFT_2$ in the large central charge sector: correlators of energy-momentum tensor

In this article we probe the proposed holographic duality between $T\bar{T}$ deformed two dimensional conformal field theory and the gravity theory of $\rm AdS_3$ with a Dirichlet cutoff by computing correlators of energy-momentum tensor. We focus on the large central charge sector of the $T\bar{T}$ CFT in a Euclidean plane and in a sphere, and compute the correlators of energy-momentum tensor using an operator identity promoted from the classical trace relation. The result agrees with a computation of classical pure gravity in $\rm AdS_3$ with the corresponding cutoff surface, given a holographic dictionary which identifies gravity parameters with $T\bar{T}$ CFT parameters.

Boundary Contributions of On-shell Recursion Relations With Multiple-line Deformation

On-shell recursion relation has been recognized as a powerful tool for calculating tree level amplitudes in quantum field theory, but it doesn't work well when the residue of the deformed amplitude $\hat{A}(z)$ doesn't vanish at infinity of $z$. However, in such situation, we still can get the right amplitude by computing the boundary contribution explicitly. In arXiv:0801.2385, background field method was first used to analyze the boundary behaviors of amplitudes with two deformed external lines in different theories. The same method has also been generalized to calculate the explicit boundary operators of some amplitudes with BCFW-like deformation in arXiv:1507.00463. In this paper, we will take a step further to generalize the method into the case of multiple-line deformation, and to show how the boundary behaviors (even the boundary contributions) can be extracted in the method.

Bayesian Survival Analysis Using Gamma Processes with Adaptive Time Partition

In Bayesian semi-parametric analyses of time-to-event data, non-parametric process priors are adopted for the baseline hazard function or the cumulative baseline hazard function for a given finite partition of the time axis. However, it would be controversial to suggest a general guideline to construct an optimal time partition. While a great deal of research has been done to relax the assumption of the fixed split times for other non-parametric processes, to our knowledge, no methods have been developed for a gamma process prior, which is one of the most widely used in Bayesian survival analysis. In this paper, we propose a new Bayesian framework for proportional hazards models where the cumulative baseline hazard function is modeled a priori by a gamma process. A key feature of the proposed framework is that the number and position of interval cutpoints are treated as random and estimated based on their posterior distributions.

Estimation of time-varying reproduction numbers underlying epidemiological processes: a new statistical tool for the COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has rapidly evolved into an unprecedented crisis. The susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) model and its variants have been used for modeling the pandemic. However, time-independent parameters in the classical models may not capture the dynamic transmission and removal processes, governed by virus containment strategies taken at various phases of the epidemic. Moreover, very few models account for possible inaccuracies of the reported cases. We propose a Poisson model with time-dependent transmission and removal rates to account for possible random errors in reporting and estimate a time-dependent disease reproduction number, which may be used to assess the effectiveness of virus control strategies. We apply our method to study the pandemic in several severely impacted countries, and analyze and forecast the evolving spread of the coronavirus. We have developed an interactive web application to facilitate readers' use of our method.

Probing magnon-magnon coupling in exchange coupled Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Permalloy bilayers with magneto-optical effects

We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon-magnon coupling. Our work offers a new route towards studying phase-resolved spin dynamics and hybrid magnonic systems.
