Large-Charge Limit of AdS Boson Stars with Mixed Boundary Conditions

It was recently shown that charged AdS boson stars can reproduce the universal structure of the lowest scaling dimension in the subsector of a CFT with fixed large global $U(1)$ charge $Q$. Using the model consisting of Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a negative cosmological constant, coupled to a $U(1)$-charged conformally massless scalar with the fourth-order self interaction, we construct a class of charged AdS boson star solutions in the large $Q$ limit, where the scalar field obeys a mixed boundary condition, parameterized by $k$ that interpolates between the Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions corresponding to $k=0$ and $\infty$ respectively. By varying $k$, we numerically read off the $k$ dependence of the leading coefficient $c_{3/2}(k) \equiv \lim_{Q\rightarrow \infty} M/Q^{3/2}$. We find that $c_{3/2}(k)$ is a monotonously increasing function which grows linearly when $k$ is sufficiently small. When $k\rightarrow \infty$, $c_{3/2}(k)$ approaches the maximal value at a decreasing rate given by $k^{-3/2}$ . We also obtain a close form expression that fits the numerical data for the entire range of $k$ within $10^{-4}$ accuracy.

Attractor Mechanism and Non-Renormalization Theorem in 6D (1,0) Supergravity

We compute the macroscopic entropy of the supersymmetric rotating dyonic strings carrying linear momentum in 6D (1,0) supergravity with curvature squared corrections. Our calculation is based on Sen's entropy function formalism applied to the near-horizon geometry of the string solution taking the form of an extremal BTZ$\times S^3$. The final entropy formula states that the two independent supersymmetric completions of Riemann tensor squared contribute equally to the entropy. A further $S^3$ compactification of the 6D theory results in a matter coupled 3D supergravity model in which the quantization condition of the SU(2)$_R$ Chern-Simons level implies the horizon value of the dilaton is not modified by higher derivative interactions beyond supersymmetric curvature squared terms.

Revisiting the AdS Boson Stars: the Mass-Charge Relations

Motivated by the recent progress in solving the large charge sector of conformal field theories, we revisit the mass-charge relation of boson stars asymptotic to global AdS. We construct and classify a large number of electrically charged boson star solutions in a toy model and two supergravity models arising from the $SU(3)$ and $U(1)^4$ truncation of $D=4$ $SO(8)$ gauged maximal supergravity. We find a simple ansatz for the chemical potential that can fit the numerical data in striking accuracy for the full range of charge. Combining with the first law of thermodynamics, we can then evaluate the mass as a function of the charge and obtain the free energy in the fixed charge ensemble. We show that in the toy model, the ground state can be either the extremal RN black hole or the boson stars depending on the parameter region. For the $SU(3)$ truncation, there always exists a boson star that has smaller free energy than the extremal RN black hole, in contrast to the $U(1)^4$ model where the extremal RN black hole is always the ground state. In all models, for boson star solutions with arbitrarily large charge, we show that the large charge expansion of the mass reproduces the same structure exhibited in the CFT side.

Horndeski Gravity as $D\rightarrow4$ Limit of Gauss-Bonnet

We propose a procedure for the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity that leads to a well defined action principle in four dimensions. Our construction is based on compactifying $D$-dimensional EGB gravity on a $(D-4)$-dimensional maximally symmetric space followed by redefining the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α\rightarrow \fracα{D-4}$. The resulting model is a special scalar-tensor theory that belongs to the family of Horndeski gravity. Static black hole solutions in the scalar-tensor theory are investigated. Interestingly, the metric profile is independent of the curvature of the internal space and coincides with the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of the usual EGB black hole with the unusual Gauss-Bonnet coupling $\fracα{D-4}$. The curvature information of the internal space is instead encoded in the profile of the extra scalar field. Our procedure can also be generalized to define further limits of the Gauss-Bonnet combination by compactifying the $D$-dimensional theory on a $(D-p)$-dimensional maximally symmetric space with $p\leq 3$. These lead to different $D\rightarrow 4$ limits of EGB gravity as well as its $D\rightarrow 2,3$ limits.

On the consistency of a class of R-symmetry gauged 6D N=(1,0) supergravities

R-symmetry gauged 6D (1,0) supergravities free from all local anomalies, with gauge groups $G\times G_R$ where $G_R$ is the R-symmetry group and $G$ is semisimple with rank greater than one, and which have no hypermultiplet singlets, are extremely rare. There are three such models known in which the gauge symmetry group is $G_1\times G_2 \times U(1)_R$ where the first two factors are $ \left(E_6/{\mathbb{Z}_3}\right) \times E_7$, $ G_2 \times E_7 $ and $F_4 \times Sp(9)$. These are models with single tensor multiplet, and hyperfermions in the $(1,912)$, $(14,56)$ and $(52,18)$ dimensional representations of $G_1\times G_2$, respectively. So far it is not known if these models follow from string theory. We highlight key properties of these theories, and examine constraints which may arise from the consistency of the quantization of anomaly coefficients formulated in their strongest form by Monnier and Moore. Assuming that the gauged models accommodate dyonic string excitations, we find that these constraints are satisfied only by the model with the $F_4 \times Sp(9)\times U(1)_R$ symmetry. We also discuss aspects of dyonic strings and potential caveats they may pose in applying the stated consistency conditions to the $R$-symmetry gauged models.

Evidence for the Holographic dual of ${\cal N}=3$ Solution in Massive Type IIA

We calculate the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of spin-2 fluctuations around the ${\cal N}=3$ warped ${\rm AdS}_4\times M_6$ solution in massive IIA supergravity. This solution was conjectured to be dual to the $D=3$ ${\cal N}=3$ superconformal ${\rm SU}(N)$ Chern-Simons matter theory with level $k$ and 2 adjoint chiral multiplets. The ${\rm SO}(3)_R\times{\rm SO}(3)_D$ isometry of the ${\cal N}=3$ solution is identified with the ${\rm SU}(2)_F\times {\rm SU}(2)_{\cal R}$ global symmetry of the dual ${\cal N}=3$ SCFT. We show that the ${\rm SO}(3)_R\times{\rm SO}(3)_D$ quantum numbers and the ${\rm AdS}$ energies carried by the BPS spin-2 modes match precisely with those of the spin-2 gauge invariant operators in the short multiplets of operators in the ${\cal N}=3$ SCFT. We also compute the Euclidean action of the ${\cal N}=3$ solution and the free energy of the ${\cal N}=3$ SCFT on $S^3$, in the limit $N\gg k$. Remarkably, the results show a complete agreement.

Rotating Strings in Six-Dimensional Higher-Derivative Supergravity

We construct the first rotating string solution in 6-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet supergravity, carrying both electric and magnetic charges. By embedding the known rotating string solution of the 2-derivative theory into 6-dimensional off-shell supergravity, the Killing spinors associated with the underlying supersymmetry can be made off-shell and are universal to all off-shell supergravity models based on the same field content. The near-horizon geometry is S^3 fibred over the extremal BTZ black hole, locally isomorphic to AdS_3*S^3. We compute the higher-derivative corrections to the Brown-Henneaux central charges in a particular R+R^2 model resulting from K3 compactification of type IIA string theory.

Unitary Extension of Exotic Massive 3D Gravity from Bi-gravity

We obtain a new 3D gravity model from two copies of parity-odd Einstein-Cartan theories. Using Hamiltonian analysis, we demonstrate that the only local degrees of freedom are two massive spin-2 modes. Unitarity of the model in anti-de Sitter and Minkowski backgrounds can be satisfied for vast choices of the parameters without fine-tuning. The recent "exotic massive 3D gravity" model arises as a limiting case of the new model. We also show that there exist trajectories on the parameter space of the new model which cross the boundary between unitary and non-unitary regions. At the crossing point, one massive graviton decouples resulting in a unitary model with just one bulk degree of freedom but two positive central charges at odds with the usual expectation that the critical model has at least one vanishing central charge. Given the fact that a suitable non-relativistic version of bi-gravity has been used as an effective theory for gapped spin-2 fractional quantum Hall states, our model may have interesting applications in condensed matter physics.

Curvature squared invariants in six-dimensional ${\cal N} = (1,0)$ supergravity

We describe the supersymmetric completion of several curvature-squared invariants for ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions. The construction of the invariants is based on a close interplay between superconformal tensor calculus and recently developed superspace techniques to study general off-shell supergravity-matter couplings. In the case of minimal off-shell Poincaré supergravity based on the dilaton-Weyl multiplet coupled to a linear multiplet as a conformal compensator, we describe off-shell supersymmetric completions for all the three possible purely gravitational curvature-squared terms in six dimensions: Riemann, Ricci, and scalar curvature squared. A linear combination of these invariants describes the off-shell completion of the Gauss-Bonnet term, recently presented in arXiv:1706.09330. We study properties of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet supergravity, which plays a central role in the effective low-energy description of $α^\prime$-corrected string theory compactified to six dimensions, including a detailed analysis of the spectrum about the ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3$ solution. We also present a novel locally superconformal invariant based on a higher-derivative action for the linear multiplet. This invariant, which includes gravitational curvature-squared terms, can be defined both coupled to the standard-Weyl or dilaton-Weyl multiplet for conformal supergravity. In the first case, we show how the addition of this invariant to the supersymmetric Einstein-Hilbert term leads to a dynamically generated cosmological constant and non-supersymmetric (A)dS$_6$ solutions. In the dilaton-Weyl multiplet, the new off-shell invariant includes Ricci and scalar curvature-squared terms and possesses a nontrivial dependence on the dilaton field.

Exotic Massive 3D Gravity

The linearized equations of `New Massive Gravity' propagate a parity doublet of massive spin-2 modes in 3D Minkowski spacetime, but a different non-linear extension is made possible by `third-way' consistency. There is a `Chern-Simons-like' action, as for other 3D massive gravity models, but the new theory is `exotic': its action is parity odd. This `Exotic Massive Gravity' is the next-to-simplest case in an infinite sequence of third-way consistent 3D gravity theories, the simplest being the `Minimal Massive Gravity' alternative to `Topologically Massive Gravity'.

Spectrum universality properties of holographic Chern-Simons theories

We give a master formula for the spin-2 spectrum of a class of three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories at large $N$, with flavour group containing SU(3), that arise as infrared fixed points of the D2-brane worldvolume field theory and have AdS$_4$ duals in massive type IIA supergravity. We use this formula to compute the spin-2 spectrum of the individual theories, discuss its supermultiplet structure and, for an ${\cal N}=2$ theory in this class, the spectrum of protected operators with spin 2. We also show that the trace of the Kaluza-Klein graviton mass matrix on the dual AdS$_4$ solutions enjoys certain universality properties. These are shown to relate the class of AdS$_4$ massive IIA solutions under consideration to a similar class of AdS$_4$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity with the same symmetries. Finally, for the ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ solution in this class, we study the entire spectrum at lowest Kaluza-Klein level and relate it to an analogue solution in $D=11$ supergravity.

ABJ Quadrality

We study physical consequences of adding orientifolds to the ABJ triality, which is among 3d N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory known as ABJ theory, type IIA string in AdS_4 x CP^3 and N=6 supersymmetric (SUSY) Vasiliev higher spin theory in AdS_4. After adding the orientifolds, it is known that the gauge group of the ABJ theory becomes O(N_1)xUSp(2N_2) while the background of the string theory is replaced by AdS_4 x CP^3/Z_2, and the supersymmetries in the both theories reduce to N=5. We propose that adding the orientifolds to the N=6 Vasiliev theory leads to N=5 SUSY Vasiliev theory. It turns out that the N=5 case is more involved because there are two formulations of the N=5 Vasiliev theory with either O or USp internal symmetry. We show that the two N=5 Vasiliev theories can be understood as certain projections of the N=6 Vasiliev theory, which we identify with the orientifold projections in the Vasiliev theory. We conjecture that the O(N_1)xUSp(2N_2) ABJ theory has the two vector model like limits: N_2 >> N_1 and N_1 >> N_2 which correspond to the semi-classical N=5 Vasiliev theories with O(N_1) and USp(2N_2) internal symmetries respectively. These correspondences together with the standard AdS/CFT correspondence comprise the ABJ quadrality among the N=5 ABJ theory, string/M-theory and two N=5 Vasliev theories. We provide a precise holographic dictionary for the correspondences by comparing correlation functions of stress tensor and flavor currents. Our conjecture is supported by various evidence such as agreements of the spectra, one-loop free energies and SUSY enhancement on the both sides. We also predict the leading free energy of the N=5 Vasiliev theory from the CFT side. As a byproduct, we give a derivation of the relation between the parity violating phase in the N=6 Vasiliev theory and the parameters in the N=6 ABJ theory, which was conjectured in arXiv:1207.4485.

Gauss-Bonnet supergravity in six dimensions

The supersymmetrization of curvature squared terms is important in the study of the low-energy limit of compactified superstrings where a distinguished role is played by the Gauss-Bonnet combination, which is ghost-free. In this letter, we construct its off-shell ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ supersymmetrization in six dimensions for the first time. By studying this invariant together with the supersymmetric Einstein-Hilbert term we confirm and extend known results of the $α'$-corrected string theory compactified to six dimensions. Finally, we analyze the spectrum about the ${\rm AdS}_3\times{\rm S}^3$ solution.

$ϕ^3$ theory with $F_4$ flavor symmetry in $6-2ε$ dimensions: 3-loop renormalization and conformal bootstrap

We consider $ϕ^3$ theory in $6-2ε$ with $F_4$ global symmetry. The beta function is calculated up to 3 loops, and a stable unitary IR fixed point is observed. The anomalous dimensions of operators quadratic or cubic in $ϕ$ are also computed. We then employ conformal bootstrap technique to study the fixed point predicted from the perturbative approach. For each putative scaling dimension of $ϕ$ ($Δ_ϕ)$, we obtain the corresponding upper bound on the scaling dimension of the second lowest scalar primary in the ${\mathbf 26}$ representation $(Δ^{\rm 2nd}_{\mathbf 26})$ which appears in the OPE of $ϕ\timesϕ$. In $D=5.95$, we observe a sharp peak on the upper bound curve located at $Δ_ϕ$ equal to the value predicted by the 3-loop computation. In $D=5$, we observe a weak kink on the upper bound curve at $(Δ_ϕ,Δ^{\rm 2nd}_{\mathbf 26})$=$(1.6,4)$.

One Loop Tests of Supersymmetric Higher Spin $AdS_4/CFT_3$

We compute one loop free energy for D=4 Vasiliev higher spin gravities based on Konstein-Vasiliev algebras hu(m;n|4), ho(m;n|4) or husp(m;n|4) and subject to higher spin preserving boundary conditions, which are conjectured to be dual to the U(N), O(N) or USp(N) singlet sectors, respectively, of free CFTs on the boundary of $AdS_4$. Ordinary supersymmetric higher spin theories appear as special cases of Konstein-Vasiliev theories, when the corresponding higher spin algebra contains $OSp({\cal N}|4)$ as subalgebra. In $AdS_4$ with $S^3$ boundary, we use a modified spectral zeta function method, which avoids the ambiguity arising from summing over infinite number of spins. We find that the contribution of the infinite tower of bulk fermions vanishes. As a result, the free energy is the sum of those which arise in type A and type B models with internal symmetries, the known mismatch between the bulk and boundary free energies for type B model persists, and ordinary supersymmetric higher spin theories exhibit the mismatch as well. The only models that have a match are type A models with internal symmetries, corresponding to $n=0$. The matching requires identification of the inverse Newton's constant $G_N^{-1}$ with $N$ plus a proper integer as was found previously for special cases. In $AdS_4$ with $S^1\times S^2$ boundary, the bulk one loop free energies match those of the dual free CFTs for arbitrary $m$ and $n$. We also show that a supersymmetric double-trace deformation of free CFT based on OSp(1|4) does not contribute to the ${\cal O}(N^0)$ free energy, as expected from the bulk.

Holographic RG Flow in a New $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ Sector of $ω$-Deformed $SO(8)$ Gauged ${\cal N}=8$ Supergravity

We consider a certain ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric, $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ invariant, subsector of the $ω$-deformed family of $SO(8)$-gauged ${\cal N}=8$ four-dimensional supergravities. The theory contains two scalar fields and two pseudoscalar fields. We look for stationary points of the scalar potential, corresponding to AdS vacua in the theory. One of these, which breaks all supersymmetries but is nonetheless stable, is new. It exists only when $ω\ne 0$. We construct supersymmetric domain wall solutions in the truncated theory, and we give a detailed analysis of their holographic dual interpretations using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Domain walls where the pseudoscalars vanish were studied previously, but those with non-vanishing pseudoscalars, which we analyse numerically, are new. The pseudoscalars are associated with supersymmetric mass deformations in the CFT duals. When $ω$ is zero, the solutions can be lifted to M-theory, where they approach the Coulomb-branch flows of dielectric M5-branes wrapped on $S^3$ in the deep IR.

An ${\cal N}=3$ Solution in Dyonic ISO(7) Gauged Maximal Supergravity and Its Uplift to Massive Type IIA

We consider a certain ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric, SO(3)$\times$SO(3) invariant, subsector of the dyonic ISO(7)-gauged maximal supergravity in four-dimensions. The theory contains two scalar fields and two pseudoscalar fields. We look for stationary points of the scalar potential, especially the one preserving ${\cal N}=3$ supersymmetry of the original ISO(7) gauged theory. The ${\cal N}=3$ stationary point corresponding to the $AdS$ vacuum in the $D=4$ theory is lifted to a warped $AdS_4\times X_6$ type solution in massive type IIA supergravity. This $D=10$ background should be the dual of a certain ${\cal N}=3$ Chern-Simons matter theory in three dimensions.

Planck constraints on inflation in auxiliary vector modified $f(R)$ theories

We show that the universal $α$-attractor models of inflation can be realized by including an auxiliary vector field $A_μ$ for the Starobinsky model with the Lagrangian $f(R)=R+R^2/(6M^2)$. If the same procedure is applied to general modified $f(R)$ theories in which the Ricci scalar $R$ is replaced by $R+A_μ A^μ+β\nabla_μA^μ$ with constant $β$, we obtain the Brans-Dicke theory with a scalar potential and the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_{\rm BD}=β^2/4$. We also place observational constraints on inflationary models based on auxiliary vector modified $f(R)$ theories from the latest Planck measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies in both temperature and polarization. In the modified Starobinsky model, we find that the parameter $β$ is constrained to be $β<25$ (68\,\%\,confidence level) from the bounds of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio.
