Nimbus: Toward Speed Up Function Signature Recovery via Input Resizing and Multi-Task Learning

Function signature recovery is important for many binary analysis tasks such as control-flow integrity enforcement, clone detection, and bug finding. Existing works try to substitute learning-based methods with rule-based methods to reduce human effort. They made considerable efforts to enhance the system's performance, which also bring the side effect of higher resource consumption. However, recovering the function signature is more about providing information for subsequent tasks, and both efficiency and performance are significant. In this paper, we first propose a method called Nimbus for efficient function signature recovery that furthest reduces the whole-process resource consumption without performance loss. Thanks to information bias and task relation (i.e., the relation between parameter count and parameter type recovery), we utilize selective inputs and introduce multi-task learning (MTL) structure for function signature recovery to reduce computational resource consumption, and fully leverage mutual information. Our experimental results show that, with only about the one-eighth processing time of the state-of-the-art method, we even achieve about 1% more prediction accuracy over all function signature recovery tasks.

A New Implementation of Federated Learning for Privacy and Security Enhancement

Motivated by the ever-increasing concerns on personal data privacy and the rapidly growing data volume at local clients, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a new machine learning setting. An FL system is comprised of a central parameter server and multiple local clients. It keeps data at local clients and learns a centralized model by sharing the model parameters learned locally. No local data needs to be shared, and privacy can be well protected. Nevertheless, since it is the model instead of the raw data that is shared, the system can be exposed to the poisoning model attacks launched by malicious clients. Furthermore, it is challenging to identify malicious clients since no local client data is available on the server. Besides, membership inference attacks can still be performed by using the uploaded model to estimate the client's local data, leading to privacy disclosure. In this work, we first propose a model update based federated averaging algorithm to defend against Byzantine attacks such as additive noise attacks and sign-flipping attacks. The individual client model initialization method is presented to provide further privacy protections from the membership inference attacks by hiding the individual local machine learning model. When combining these two schemes, privacy and security can be both effectively enhanced. The proposed schemes are proved to converge experimentally under non-IID data distribution when there are no attacks. Under Byzantine attacks, the proposed schemes perform much better than the classical model based FedAvg algorithm.

Noise and Edge Based Dual Branch Image Manipulation Detection

Unlike ordinary computer vision tasks that focus more on the semantic content of images, the image manipulation detection task pays more attention to the subtle information of image manipulation. In this paper, the noise image extracted by the improved constrained convolution is used as the input of the model instead of the original image to obtain more subtle traces of manipulation. Meanwhile, the dual-branch network, consisting of a high-resolution branch and a context branch, is used to capture the traces of artifacts as much as possible. In general, most manipulation leaves manipulation artifacts on the manipulation edge. A specially designed manipulation edge detection module is constructed based on the dual-branch network to identify these artifacts better. The correlation between pixels in an image is closely related to their distance. The farther the two pixels are, the weaker the correlation. We add a distance factor to the self-attention module to better describe the correlation between pixels. Experimental results on four publicly available image manipulation datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model.

STEC-IoT: A Security Tactic by Virtualizing Edge Computing on IoT

To a large extent, the deployment of edge computing (EC) can reduce the burden of the explosive growth of the Internet of things. As a powerful hub between the Internet of things and cloud servers, edge devices make the transmission of cloud to things no longer complicated. However, edge nodes are faced with a series of problems, such as large number, a wide range of distribution, and complex environment, the security of edge computing should not be underestimated. Based on this, we propose a tactic to improve the safety of edge computing by virtualizing edge nodes. In detail, first of all, we propose a strategy of edge node partition, virtualize the edge nodes dealing with different types of things into various virtual networks, which are deployed between the edge nodes and the cloud server. Second, considering that different information transmission has different security requirement, we propose a security tactic based on security level measurement. Finally, through simulation experiments, we compare with the existing advanced algorithms which are committed to virtual network security, and prove that the model proposed in this paper has definite progressiveness in enhancing the security of edge computing.

Energy Efficient Robust Beamforming and Cooperative Jamming Design for IRS-Assisted MISO Networks

Energy-efficient design and secure communications are of crucial importance in wireless communication networks. However, the energy efficiency achieved by using physical layer security can be limited by the channel conditions. In order to tackle this problem, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple input single output (MISO) network with independent cooperative jamming is studied. The energy efficiency is maximized by jointly designing the transmit and jamming beamforming and IRS phase-shift matrix under both the perfect channel state information (CSI) and the imperfect CSI. In order to tackle the challenging non-convex fractional problems, an algorithm based on semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation is proposed for solving energy efficiency maximization problem under the perfect CSI case while an alternate optimization algorithm based on $\mathcal{S}$-procedure is used for solving the problem under the imperfect CSI case. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design outperforms the benchmark schemes in term of energy efficiency. Moreover, the tradeoff between energy efficiency and the secrecy rate is found in the IRS-assisted MISO network. Furthermore, it is shown that IRS can help improve energy efficiency even with the uncertainty of the CSI.

Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning enabled Computation Resource Allocation in a Vehicular Cloud Network

In this paper, we investigate the computational resource allocation problem in a distributed Ad-Hoc vehicular network with no centralized infrastructure support. To support the ever increasing computational needs in such a vehicular network, the distributed virtual cloud network (VCN) is formed, based on which a computational resource sharing scheme through offloading among nearby vehicles is proposed. In view of the time-varying computational resource in VCN, the statistical distribution characteristics for computational resource are analyzed in detail. Thereby, a resource-aware combinatorial optimization objective mechanism is proposed. To alleviate the non-stationary environment caused by the typically multi-agent environment in VCN, we adopt a centralized training and decentralized execution framework. In addition, for the objective optimization problem, we model it as a Markov game and propose a DRL based multi-agent deep deterministic reinforcement learning (MADDPG) algorithm to solve it. Interestingly, to overcome the dilemma of lacking a real central control unit in VCN, the allocation is actually completed on the vehicles in a distributed manner. The simulation results are presented to demonstrate our scheme's effectiveness.

Joint Frame Design and Resource Allocation for Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Vehicular Networks

The rapid development of the fifth generation mobile communication systems accelerates the implementation of vehicle-to-everything communications. Compared with the other types of vehicular communications, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications mainly focus on the exchange of driving safety information with neighboring vehicles, which requires ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLCs). However, the frame size is significantly shortened in V2V URLLCs because of the rigorous latency requirements, and thus the overhead is no longer negligible compared with the payload information from the perspective of size. In this paper, we investigate the frame design and resource allocation for an urban V2V URLLC system in which the uplink cellular resources are reused at the underlay mode. Specifically, we first analyze the lower bounds of performance for V2V pairs and cellular users based on the regular pilot scheme and superimposed pilot scheme. Then, we propose a frame design algorithm and a semi-persistent scheduling algorithm to achieve the optimal frame design and resource allocation with the reasonable complexity. Finally, our simulation results show that the proposed frame design and resource allocation scheme can greatly satisfy the URLLC requirements of V2V pairs and guarantee the communication quality of cellular users.

Leveraging Linear Quadratic Regulator Cost and Energy Consumption for Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency IoT Control Systems

To efficiently support the real-time control applications, networked control systems operating with ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLCs) become fundamental technology for future Internet of things (IoT). However, the design of control, sensing and communications is generally isolated at present. In this paper, we propose the joint optimization of control cost and energy consumption for a centralized wireless networked control system. Specifically, with the ``sensing-then-control'' protocol, we first develop an optimization framework which jointly takes control, sensing and communications into account. In this framework, we derive the spectral efficiency, linear quadratic regulator cost and energy consumption. Then, a novel performance metric called the \textit{energy-to-control efficiency} is proposed for the IoT control system. In addition, we optimize the energy-to-control efficiency while guaranteeing the requirements of URLLCs, thereupon a general and complex max-min joint optimization problem is formulated for the IoT control system. To optimally solve the formulated problem by reasonable complexity, we propose two radio resource allocation algorithms. Finally, simulation results show that our proposed algorithms can significantly improve the energy-to-control efficiency for the IoT control system with URLLCs.

Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications for Connected Vehicles: Challenges and Solutions

With the rapid development of communications and computing, the concept of connected vehicles emerges to improve driving safety, traffic efficiency and infotainment experience. Due to the limited capabilities of sensors and information processing on a single vehicle, vehicular networks (VNETs) play a vital role for the realization of connected vehicles. To achieve the closer cooperation on the road, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLCs) become the indispensable components of future VNETs. However, traditional wireless networks are designed with the objective of maximizing spectral and energy efficiency regardless of adequate consideration of URLLCs. To this end, this article investigates the challenges and solutions of conceiving URLLC VNETs dedicated for connected vehicles. Specifically, the underlying application scenarios are first presented with various vehicular communication patterns. Then, the URLLC requirements and potential challenges are discussed for VNETs. We also discuss the solutions to establish URLLC VNETs from the aspects of physical and media access control layers, including the optimization frameworks for latency and reliability, as well as the case studies of employing such frameworks. Finally, several open research directions are pointed out.

Computation Rate Maximization in UAV-Enabled Wireless Powered Mobile-Edge Computing Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) and wireless power transfer (WPT) are two promising techniques to enhance the computation capability and to prolong the operational time of low-power wireless devices that are ubiquitous in Internet of Things. However, the computation performance and the harvested energy are significantly impacted by the severe propagation loss. In order to address this issue, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled MEC wireless powered system is studied in this paper. The computation rate maximization problems in a UAV-enabled MEC wireless powered system are investigated under both partial and binary computation offloading modes, subject to the energy harvesting causal constraint and the UAV's speed constraint. These problems are non-convex and challenging to solve. A two-stage algorithm and a three-stage alternative algorithm are respectively proposed for solving the formulated problems. The closed-form expressions for the optimal central processing unit frequencies, user offloading time, and user transmit power are derived. The optimal selection scheme on whether users choose to locally compute or offload computation tasks is proposed for the binary computation offloading mode. Simulation results show that our proposed resource allocation schemes outperforms other benchmark schemes. The results also demonstrate that the proposed schemes converge fast and have low computational complexity.

Wearable Communications in 5G: Challenges and Enabling Technologies

As wearable devices become more ingrained in our daily lives, traditional communication networks primarily designed for human being-oriented applications are facing tremendous challenges. The upcoming 5G wireless system aims to support unprecedented high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity. In this article, we evaluate key challenges in wearable communications. A cloud/edge communication architecture that integrates the cloud radio access network, software defined network, device to device communications, and cloud/edge technologies is presented. Computation offloading enabled by this multi-layer communications architecture can offload computation-excessive and latency-stringent applications to nearby devices through device to device communications or to nearby edge nodes through cellular or other wireless technologies. Critical issues faced by wearable communications such as short battery life, limited computing capability, and stringent latency can be greatly alleviated by this cloud/edge architecture. Together with the presented architecture, current transmission and networking technologies, including non-orthogonal multiple access, mobile edge computing, and energy harvesting, can greatly enhance the performance of wearable communication in terms of spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, latency, and connectivity.

Self-Organization in Disaster Resilient Heterogeneous Small Cell Networks

Heterogeneous small cell networks with overlay femtocells and macrocell is a promising solution for future heterogeneous wireless cellular communications. However, great resilience is needed in heterogeneous small cells in case of accidents, attacks and natural disasters. In this article, we first describe the network architecture of disaster resilient heterogeneous small cell networks (DRHSCNs), where several self-organization inspired approaches are applied. Based on the proposed resilient heterogeneous small cell network architecture, self-configuring (power, physical cell ID and neighbor cell list self-configuration) and self-optimizing (coverage and capacity optimization and mobility robustness optimization) techniques are investigated in the DRHSCN. Simulation results show that self-configuration and self-optimization can effectively improve the performance of the deployment and operation of the small cell networks in disaster scenarios.
