Robust Long-Range Perception Against Sensor Misalignment in Autonomous Vehicles

Advances in machine learning algorithms for sensor fusion have significantly improved the detection and prediction of other road users, thereby enhancing safety. However, even a small angular displacement in the sensor's placement can cause significant degradation in output, especially at long range. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple yet generic and efficient multi-task learning approach that not only detects misalignment between different sensor modalities but is also robust against them for long-range perception. Along with the amount of misalignment, our method also predicts calibrated uncertainty, which can be useful for filtering and fusing predicted misalignment values over time. In addition, we show that the predicted misalignment parameters can be used for self-correcting input sensor data, further improving the perception performance under sensor misalignment.

SpeHeatal: A Cluster-Enhanced Segmentation Method for Sperm Morphology Analysis

The accurate assessment of sperm morphology is crucial in andrological diagnostics, where the segmentation of sperm images presents significant challenges. Existing approaches frequently rely on large annotated datasets and often struggle with the segmentation of overlapping sperm and the presence of dye impurities. To address these challenges, this paper first analyzes the issue of overlapping sperm tails from a geometric perspective and introduces a novel clustering algorithm, Con2Dis, which effectively segments overlapping tails by considering three essential factors: CONnectivity, CONformity, and DIStance. Building on this foundation, we propose an unsupervised method, SpeHeatal, designed for the comprehensive segmentation of the SPErm HEAd and TAiL. SpeHeatal employs the Segment Anything Model(SAM) to generate masks for sperm heads while filtering out dye impurities, utilizes Con2Dis to segment tails, and then applies a tailored mask splicing technique to produce complete sperm masks. Experimental results underscore the superior performance of SpeHeatal, particularly in handling images with overlapping sperm.

Be Cautious When Merging Unfamiliar LLMs: A Phishing Model Capable of Stealing Privacy

Model merging is a widespread technology in large language models (LLMs) that integrates multiple task-specific LLMs into a unified one, enabling the merged model to inherit the specialized capabilities of these LLMs. Most task-specific LLMs are sourced from open-source communities and have not undergone rigorous auditing, potentially imposing risks in model merging. This paper highlights an overlooked privacy risk: \textit{an unsafe model could compromise the privacy of other LLMs involved in the model merging.} Specifically, we propose PhiMM, a privacy attack approach that trains a phishing model capable of stealing privacy using a crafted privacy phishing instruction dataset. Furthermore, we introduce a novel model cloaking method that mimics a specialized capability to conceal attack intent, luring users into merging the phishing model. Once victims merge the phishing model, the attacker can extract personally identifiable information (PII) or infer membership information (MI) by querying the merged model with the phishing instruction. Experimental results show that merging a phishing model increases the risk of privacy breaches. Compared to the results before merging, PII leakage increased by 3.9\% and MI leakage increased by 17.4\% on average. We release the code of PhiMM through a link.

Study on the efficiency droop in high-quality GaN material under high photoexcitation intensity

III-V nitride semiconductors, represented by GaN, have attracted significant research attention. Driven by the growing interest in smart micro-displays, there is a strong desire to achieve enhanced light output from even smaller light-emitting diode (LED) chips. However, the most perplexing phenomenon and the most significant challenge in the study of emission properties under high-injection conditions in GaN has always been efficiency droop for decades, where LEDs exhibit a substantial loss in efficiency at high driving currents. In this paper, we present our study on the intrinsic emission properties of high-quality GaN material based on the density of states and the principles of momentum conservation. Our theoretical calculations reveal a momentum distribution mismatch between the non-equilibrium excess electrons and holes, which becomes more significant as the carrier concentration increases. Our excitation-dependent photoluminescence measurements conducted at 6 K exhibited a clear droop for all exciton recombinations, but droop-free for phonon-assisted recombination due to phonons compensating for the momentum mismatch. These findings indicate that the momentum distribution mismatch between the non-equilibrium excess electrons and holes is one of the intrinsic causes of the efficiency droop, which originates from the intrinsic band properties of GaN. These results suggest that proper active region design aimed at reducing this mismatch will contribute to the development of ultra-highly efficient lighting devices in the future.

Enhanced optical performance of GaN Micro-light-emitting diodes with a single porous layer

High-efficiency micro-light-emitting diodes (Micro-LEDs) are key devices for next-generation display technology. However, when the mesa size is reduced to around tens of micrometers or less, the luminous efficiency is constrained by the "efficiency-on-size effect". This work details the fabrication of gallium nitride (GaN) based Micro-LEDs with various mesa shapes and a single porous layer under the active region. A modified green LED epitaxial structure with different doped n-GaN layers combined with electrochemical etching created the porous layer. The strong light confinement achieved by the porous layer and the polygonal mesa greatly enhances spontaneous emission. The luminous intensity of the Micro-LEDs with the porous layer is approximately 22 times greater than those Micro-LEDs without the porous layer. A significant reduction in minimum full width at half maximum (FWHM) was observed in polygonal devices, suggesting a change in the luminescence mechanism. The influence of varying device geometry on emission performance was investigated. Experimental results reveal that, unlike circular porous Micro-LEDs, square and hexagonal porous Micro-LEDs exhibit more pronounced resonant emission, which provides a new technological approach for the further development of high-performance Micro-LEDs and lasers.

Cavity Plasmon: Enhanced Luminescence Effect on InGaN Light Emitting Diodes

We fabricated polygonal nanoholes in the top p-GaN layer of the InGaN/GaN light-emitting diode, followed by the deposition of Au/Al metal thin film within the nanoholes to create metal microcavities, thereby constructing the surface plasmon structure. The findings indicate that with increased current injection, the light output of the LEDs rose by 46%, accompanied by a shift of the gain peak position towards the plasmon resonance energy. The maximum enhancement factor increases to 2.38 as the coupling distance decreases from 60 nm to 30 nm. Interestingly, time-resolved photoluminescence data showed that the spontaneous emission decay time lengthened due to the plasmon coupling, suggesting the presence of a new plasmon coupling mechanism. Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation results show that the electric field is localized at certain locations around the metal microcavity, generating a new type of shape-sensitive plasmon, named Cavity Plasmon here. This intense localization leads to a longer lifetime and enhances the recombination efficiency of excitons. We discuss several unique properties of the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity with several specific angular shapes. The results demonstrate that the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity is a highly promising technique for enhancing the light emission performance of of relevant semiconductor optoelectronic devices.

Unusual topological polar texture in moiré ferroelectrics

Topological polar textures in ferroelectrics have attracted significant interest for their potential for energy-efficient and high-density data storage and processing. Among these, polar merons and antimerons are predicted in strained and twisted bilayers of inversion symmetry broken systems. However, experimental observation of these polar textures within twisted two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials remains challenging. Here, we utilize vector piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to reconstruct the polarization fields in R-type marginally twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We observe alternating out-of-plane (OOP) polarizations at domain regions and in-plane (IP) vortex-like polarization patterns along domain walls (DWs), indicative of a network of polar merons and antimerons. Notably, the OOP polarization exhibits three polarity reversals across a DW. Similar polar textures are identified in marginally twisted MoSe2 and WSe2 homobilayers. Our theoretical simulations attribute these unusual polarization reversals near the DWs to the competition between moiré ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. These results provide experimental evidence of complex polar textures in moiré ferroelectrics, offering new insights into the electronic band topology in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).

Scale-MIA: A Scalable Model Inversion Attack against Secure Federated Learning via Latent Space Reconstruction

Federated learning is known for its capability to safeguard the participants' data privacy. However, recently emerged model inversion attacks (MIAs) have shown that a malicious parameter server can reconstruct individual users' local data samples from model updates. The state-of-the-art attacks either rely on computation-intensive iterative optimization methods to reconstruct each input batch, making scaling difficult, or involve the malicious parameter server adding extra modules before the global model architecture, rendering the attacks too conspicuous and easily detectable. To overcome these limitations, we propose Scale-MIA, a novel MIA capable of efficiently and accurately reconstructing local training samples from the aggregated model updates, even when the system is protected by a robust secure aggregation (SA) protocol. Scale-MIA utilizes the inner architecture of models and identifies the latent space as the critical layer for breaching privacy. Scale-MIA decomposes the complex reconstruction task into an innovative two-step process. The first step is to reconstruct the latent space representations (LSRs) from the aggregated model updates using a closed-form inversion mechanism, leveraging specially crafted linear layers. Then in the second step, the LSRs are fed into a fine-tuned generative decoder to reconstruct the whole input batch. We implemented Scale-MIA on commonly used machine learning models and conducted comprehensive experiments across various settings. The results demonstrate that Scale-MIA achieves excellent performance on different datasets, exhibiting high reconstruction rates, accuracy, and attack efficiency on a larger scale compared to state-of-the-art MIAs. Measures of intermediate pressures for geometric Lorenz attractors

Pressure measures the complexity of a dynamical system concerning a continuous observation function. A dynamical system is called to admit the intermediate pressure property if for any observation function, the measure theoretical pressures of all ergodic measures form an interval. We prove that the intermediate pressure property holds for $C^r (r\geq 2)$ generic geometric Lorenz attractors while it fails for $C^r (r\geq 2)$ dense geometric Lorenz attractors, which gives a sharp contrast. Similar results hold for $C^1$ singular hyperbolic attractors.

A $C^r$-connecting lemma for Lorenz attractors and its application on the space of ergodic measures

For every $r\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq 2}\cup\{\infty\}$, we prove a $C^r$-connecting lemma for Lorenz attractors. To be precise, for a Lorenz attractor of a $3$-dimensional $C^r$ ($r\geq 2$) vector field, a heteroclinic orbit associated to the singularity and a critical element can be created through arbitrarily small $C^r$-perturbations. As an application, we show that for $C^r$-dense geometric Lorenz attractors, the Dirac measure of the singularity is isolated inside the space of ergodic measures and thus the ergodic measure space is not connected; while for $C^r$-generic geometric Lorenz attractors, the space of ergodic measures is path connected with dense periodic measures. In particular, the generic part proves a conjecture proposed by C. Bonatti in $C^r$-topology for Lorenz attractors.

Interactive Character Control with Auto-Regressive Motion Diffusion Models

Real-time character control is an essential component for interactive experiences, with a broad range of applications, including physics simulations, video games, and virtual reality. The success of diffusion models for image synthesis has led to the use of these models for motion synthesis. However, the majority of these motion diffusion models are primarily designed for offline applications, where space-time models are used to synthesize an entire sequence of frames simultaneously with a pre-specified length. To enable real-time motion synthesis with diffusion model that allows time-varying controls, we propose A-MDM (Auto-regressive Motion Diffusion Model). Our conditional diffusion model takes an initial pose as input, and auto-regressively generates successive motion frames conditioned on the previous frame. Despite its streamlined network architecture, which uses simple MLPs, our framework is capable of generating diverse, long-horizon, and high-fidelity motion sequences. Furthermore, we introduce a suite of techniques for incorporating interactive controls into A-MDM, such as task-oriented sampling, in-painting, and hierarchical reinforcement learning. These techniques enable a pre-trained A-MDM to be efficiently adapted for a variety of new downstream tasks. We conduct a comprehensive suite of experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of A-MDM, and compare its performance against state-of-the-art auto-regressive methods.

Polyphone Disambiguation in Mandarin Chinese with Semi-Supervised Learning

The majority of Chinese characters are monophonic, while a special group of characters, called polyphonic characters, have multiple pronunciations. As a prerequisite of performing speech-related generative tasks, the correct pronunciation must be identified among several candidates. This process is called Polyphone Disambiguation. Although the problem has been well explored with both knowledge-based and learning-based approaches, it remains challenging due to the lack of publicly available labeled datasets and the irregular nature of polyphone in Mandarin Chinese. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised learning (SSL) framework for Mandarin Chinese polyphone disambiguation that can potentially leverage unlimited unlabeled text data. We explore the effect of various proxy labeling strategies including entropy-thresholding and lexicon-based labeling. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance. In addition, we publish a novel dataset specifically for the polyphone disambiguation task to promote further research.

CS3: Cascade SAM for Sperm Segmentation

Automated sperm morphology analysis plays a crucial role in the assessment of male fertility, yet its efficacy is often compromised by the challenges in accurately segmenting sperm images. Existing segmentation techniques, including the Segment Anything Model(SAM), are notably inadequate in addressing the complex issue of sperm overlap-a frequent occurrence in clinical samples. Our exploratory studies reveal that modifying image characteristics by removing sperm heads and easily segmentable areas, alongside enhancing the visibility of overlapping regions, markedly enhances SAM's efficiency in segmenting intricate sperm structures. Motivated by these findings, we present the Cascade SAM for Sperm Segmentation (CS3), an unsupervised approach specifically designed to tackle the issue of sperm overlap. This method employs a cascade application of SAM to segment sperm heads, simple tails, and complex tails in stages. Subsequently, these segmented masks are meticulously matched and joined to construct complete sperm masks. In collaboration with leading medical institutions, we have compiled a dataset comprising approximately 2,000 unlabeled sperm images to fine-tune our method, and secured expert annotations for an additional 240 images to facilitate comprehensive model assessment. Experimental results demonstrate superior performance of CS3 compared to existing methods.

Layer-dependent electromechanical response in twisted graphene moiré superlattices

The coupling of mechanical deformation and electrical stimuli at the nanoscale has been a subject of intense investigation in the realm of materials science. Recently, twisted van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a platform to explore exotic quantum states. These states are intimately tied to the formation of moiré superlattices, which can be visualized directly exploiting the electromechanical response. However, the origin of the response, even in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), remains unsettled. Here, employing lateral piezoresponse force microscopy (LPFM), we investigate the electromechanical responses of marginally twisted graphene moiré superlattices with different layer thicknesses. We observe distinct LPFM amplitudes and spatial profiles in tBLG and twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG), exhibiting effective in-plane piezoelectric coefficients of 0.05 pm/V and 0.35 pm/V, respectively. Force tuning experiments further underscore a marked divergence in their responses. The contrasting behaviors suggest different electromechanical couplings in tBLG and tMBG. In tBLG, the response near the domain walls is attributed to the flexoelectric effect, while in tMBG, the behaviors can be comprehended within the context of piezoelectric effect. Our results not only provide insights to electromechanical and corporative effects in twisted vdW materials with different stacking symmetries, but may also show their potential for engineering them at the nanoscale.

SpotNet: An Image Centric, Lidar Anchored Approach To Long Range Perception

In this paper, we propose SpotNet: a fast, single stage, image-centric but LiDAR anchored approach for long range 3D object detection. We demonstrate that our approach to LiDAR/image sensor fusion, combined with the joint learning of 2D and 3D detection tasks, can lead to accurate 3D object detection with very sparse LiDAR support. Unlike more recent bird's-eye-view (BEV) sensor-fusion methods which scale with range $r$ as $O(r^2)$, SpotNet scales as $O(1)$ with range. We argue that such an architecture is ideally suited to leverage each sensor's strength, i.e. semantic understanding from images and accurate range finding from LiDAR data. Finally we show that anchoring detections on LiDAR points removes the need to regress distances, and so the architecture is able to transfer from 2MP to 8MP resolution images without re-training.

Audio Matters Too! Enhancing Markerless Motion Capture with Audio Signals for String Performance Capture

In this paper, we touch on the problem of markerless multi-modal human motion capture especially for string performance capture which involves inherently subtle hand-string contacts and intricate movements. To fulfill this goal, we first collect a dataset, named String Performance Dataset (SPD), featuring cello and violin performances. The dataset includes videos captured from up to 23 different views, audio signals, and detailed 3D motion annotations of the body, hands, instrument, and bow. Moreover, to acquire the detailed motion annotations, we propose an audio-guided multi-modal motion capture framework that explicitly incorporates hand-string contacts detected from the audio signals for solving detailed hand poses. This framework serves as a baseline for string performance capture in a completely markerless manner without imposing any external devices on performers, eliminating the potential of introducing distortion in such delicate movements. We argue that the movements of performers, particularly the sound-producing gestures, contain subtle information often elusive to visual methods but can be inferred and retrieved from audio cues. Consequently, we refine the vision-based motion capture results through our innovative audio-guided approach, simultaneously clarifying the contact relationship between the performer and the instrument, as deduced from the audio. We validate the proposed framework and conduct ablation studies to demonstrate its efficacy. Our results outperform current state-of-the-art vision-based algorithms, underscoring the feasibility of augmenting visual motion capture with audio modality. To the best of our knowledge, SPD is the first dataset for musical instrument performance, covering fine-grained hand motion details in a multi-modal, large-scale collection.

High-speed quantum radio-frequency-over-light communication

Quantum dense coding (QDC) means to transmit two classical bits by only transferring one quantum bit, which has enabled high-capacity information transmission and strengthened system security. Continuousvariable QDC offers a promising solution to increase communication rates while achieving seamless integration with classical communication systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed quantum radio-frequency-over-light (RFoL) communication scheme based on QDC with entangled state, and achieve a practical rate of 20 Mbps through digital modulation and RFoL communication. This scheme bridges the gap between quantum technology and real-world communication systems, which bring QDC closer to practical applications and offer prospects for further enhancement of metropolitan communication networks.

Global rigidity of smooth ${\mathbb Z}\ltimes_λ{\mathbb R}$-actions on ${\mathbb T}^2$

For $λ>1$, we consider the locally free ${\mathbb Z}\ltimes_λ{\mathbb R}$ actions on ${\mathbb T}^2$. We show that, if the action is $C^r$ with $r\geq2$, then it is $C^{r-ε}$-conjugate to an affine action generated by a hyperbolic automorphism and a linear translation flow along expanding eigen-direction of the automorphism. In contrast, there exists a $C^{1+α}$-action which is semi-conjugate, but not topologically conjugate to an affine action.
