Counting components of moduli space of HCMU spheres via weighted trees

HCMU surfaces are compact Riemann surfaces equipped with the Calabi extremal Kähler metric and a finite number of singularities. By using both the classical football decomposition introduced by Chen-Chen-Wu and the description of the geometric structure of HCMU surfaces by Lu-Xu, we can use weighted plane trees to characterize HCMU spheres with a single integral conical angle. Moreover, we obtain an explicit counting formula for the components of the moduli space of such HCMU spheres by enumerating some class of weighted plane trees.

Holographic MIMO Multi-Cell Communications

Metamaterial antennas are appealing for next-generation wireless networks due to their simplified hardware and much-reduced size, power, and cost. This paper investigates the holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO)-aided multi-cell systems with practical per-radio frequency (RF) chain power constraints. With multiple antennas at both base stations (BSs) and users, we design the baseband digital precoder and the tuning response of HMIMO metamaterial elements to maximize the weighted sum user rate. Specifically, under the framework of block coordinate descent (BCD) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) techniques, we derive the low-complexity closed-form solution for baseband precoder without requiring bisection search and matrix inversion. Then, for the design of HMIMO metamaterial elements under binary tuning constraints, we first propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm with closed-form solutions by exploiting the hidden convexity (HC) in the quadratic problem and then further propose an accelerated sphere decoding (SD)-based algorithm which yields global optimal solution in the iteration. For HMIMO metamaterial element design under the Lorentzian-constrained phase model, we propose a maximization-minorization (MM) algorithm with closed-form solutions at each iteration step. Furthermore, in a simplified multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, we derive the scaling law of downlink single-to-noise (SNR) for HMIMO with binary and Lorentzian tuning constraints and theoretically compare it with conventional fully digital/hybrid arrays. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms compared to benchmarks and the benefits of HMIMO compared to conventional arrays.

Cooperative Multistatic Target Detection in Cell-Free Communication Networks

In this work, we consider the target detection problem in a multistatic integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenario characterized by the cell-free MIMO communication network deployment, where multiple radio units (RUs) in the network cooperate with each other for the sensing task. By exploiting the angle resolution from multiple arrays deployed in the network and the delay resolution from the communication signals, i.e., orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, we formulate a cooperative sensing problem with coherent data fusion of multiple RUs' observations and propose a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based method, where the global coordinates of target locations are directly detected. Intensive numerical results indicate promising target detection performance of the proposed SBL-based method. Additionally, a theoretical analysis of the considered cooperative multistatic sensing task is provided using the pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis, which can be used to provide design insights, e.g., illumination and beam patterns, for the considered problem.

Iterative Equalization of CPM With Unitary Approximate Message Passing

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) has extensive applications in wireless communications due to its high spectral and power efficiency. However, its nonlinear characteristics pose significant challenges for detection in frequency selective fading channels. This paper proposes an iterative receiver tailored for the detection of CPM signals over frequency selective fading channels. This design leverages the factor graph framework to integrate equalization, demodulation, and decoding functions. The equalizer employs the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) algorithm, while the unitary transformation is implemented using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with the aid of a cyclic prefix (CP), thereby achieving low computational complexity while with high performance. For CPM demodulation and channel decoding, with belief propagation (BP), we design a message passing-based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm, and the message exchange between the demodulator, decoder and equalizer is elaborated. With proper message passing schedules, the receiver can achieve fast convergence. Simulation results show that compared with existing turbo receivers, the proposed receiver delivers significant performance enhancement with low computational complexity.

Compressed Sensing Inspired User Acquisition for Downlink Integrated Sensing and Communication Transmissions

This paper investigates radar-assisted user acquisition for downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Specifically, we formulate a concise mathematical model for the user acquisition problem, where each user is characterized by its delay and beamspace response. Therefore, we propose a two-stage method for user acquisition, where the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm is adopted for delay estimation, and then a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is applied for estimating the user response in the beamspace. Furthermore, we also provide a comprehensive performance analysis of the considered problem based on the pair-wise error probability (PEP). Particularly, we show that the rank and the geometric mean of non-zero eigenvalues of the squared beamspace difference matrix determines the user acquisition performance. More importantly, we reveal that simultaneously probing multiple beams outperforms concentrating power on a specific beam direction in each time slot under the power constraint, when only limited OFDM symbols are transmitted. Our numerical results confirm our conclusions and also demonstrate a promising acquisition performance of the proposed two-stage method.

An Achievable and Analytic Solution to Information Bottleneck for Gaussian Mixtures

In this paper, we study a remote source coding scenario in which binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation sources are corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). An intermediate node, such as a relay, receives these observations and performs additional compression to balance complexity and relevance. This problem can be further formulated as an information bottleneck (IB) problem with Bernoulli sources and Gaussian mixture observations. However, no closed-form solution exists for this IB problem. To address this challenge, we propose a unified achievable scheme that employs three different compression/quantization strategies for intermediate node processing by using two-level quantization, multi-level deterministic quantization, and soft quantization with the hyperbolic tangent ($\tanh$) function, respectively. In addition, we extend our analysis to the vector mixture Gaussian observation problem and explore its application in machine learning for binary classification with information leakage. Numerical evaluations show that the proposed scheme has a near-optimal performance over various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), compared to the Blahut-Arimoto (BA) algorithm, and has better performance than some existing numerical methods such as the information dropout approach. Furthermore, experiments conducted on the realistic MNIST dataset also validate the superior classification accuracy of our method compared to the information dropout approach.

Hybrid Message Passing-Based Detectors for Uplink Grant-Free NOMA Systems

This paper studies improving the detector performance which considers the activity state (AS) temporal correlation of the user equipments (UEs) in the time domain under the uplink grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) system. The Bernoulli Gaussian-Markov chain (BG-MC) probability model is used for exploiting both the sparsity and slow change characteristic of the AS of the UE. The GAMP Bernoulli Gaussian-Markov chain (GAMP-BG-MC) algorithm is proposed to improve the detector performance, which can utilize the bidirectional message passing between the neighboring time slots to fully exploit the temporally-correlated AS of the UE. Furthermore, the parameters of the BG-MC model can be updated adaptively during the estimation procedure with unknown system statistics. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the detection accuracy compared with the existing methods while keeping the same order complexity.

CharacterGLM: Customizing Chinese Conversational AI Characters with Large Language Models

In this paper, we present CharacterGLM, a series of models built upon ChatGLM, with model sizes ranging from 6B to 66B parameters. Our CharacterGLM is designed for generating Character-based Dialogues (CharacterDial), which aims to equip a conversational AI system with character customization for satisfying people's inherent social desires and emotional needs. On top of CharacterGLM, we can customize various AI characters or social agents by configuring their attributes (identities, interests, viewpoints, experiences, achievements, social relationships, etc.) and behaviors (linguistic features, emotional expressions, interaction patterns, etc.). Our model outperforms most mainstream close-source large langauge models, including the GPT series, especially in terms of consistency, human-likeness, and engagement according to manual evaluations. We will release our 6B version of CharacterGLM and a subset of training data to facilitate further research development in the direction of character-based dialogue generation.

SURE: A Visualized Failure Indexing Approach using Program Memory Spectrum

Failure indexing is a longstanding crux in software testing and debugging, the goal of which is to automatically divide failures (e.g., failed test cases) into distinct groups according to the culprit root causes, as such multiple faults in a faulty program can be handled independently and simultaneously. This community has long been plagued by two challenges: 1) The effectiveness of division is still far from promising. Existing techniques only employ a limited source of run-time data (e.g., code coverage) to be failure proximity, which typically delivers unsatisfactory results. 2) The outcome can be hardly comprehensible. A developer who receives the failure indexing result does not know why all failures should be divided the way they are. This leads to difficulties for developers to be convinced by the result, which in turn affects the adoption of the results. To tackle these challenges, in this paper, we propose SURE, a viSUalized failuRe indExing approach using the program memory spectrum. We first collect the run-time memory information at preset breakpoints during the execution of failed test cases, and transform it into human-friendly images (called program memory spectrum, PMS). Then, any pair of PMS images that serve as proxies for two failures is fed to a trained Siamese convolutional neural network, to predict the likelihood of them being triggered by the same fault. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of SURE: It achieves 101.20% and 41.38% improvements in faults number estimation, as well as 105.20% and 35.53% improvements in clustering, compared with the state-of-the-art technique in this field, in simulated and real-world environments, respectively. Moreover, we carry out a human study to quantitatively evaluate the comprehensibility of PMS, revealing that this novel type of representation can help developers better comprehend failure indexing results.

EVA2.0: Investigating Open-Domain Chinese Dialogue Systems with Large-Scale Pre-Training

Large-scale pre-training has shown remarkable performance in building open-domain dialogue systems. However, previous works mainly focus on showing and evaluating the conversational performance of the released dialogue model, ignoring the discussion of some key factors towards a powerful human-like chatbot, especially in Chinese scenarios. In this paper, we conduct extensive experiments to investigate these under-explored factors, including data quality control, model architecture designs, training approaches, and decoding strategies. We propose EVA2.0, a large-scale pre-trained open-domain Chinese dialogue model with 2.8 billion parameters, and will make our models and codes publicly available. Automatic and human evaluations show that EVA2.0 significantly outperforms other open-source counterparts. We also discuss the limitations of this work by presenting some failure cases and pose some future research directions on large-scale Chinese open-domain dialogue systems.

Automated Audio Captioning and Language-Based Audio Retrieval

This project involved participation in the DCASE 2022 Competition (Task 6) which had two subtasks: (1) Automated Audio Captioning and (2) Language-Based Audio Retrieval. The first subtask involved the generation of a textual description for audio samples, while the goal of the second was to find audio samples within a fixed dataset that match a given description. For both subtasks, the Clotho dataset was used. The models were evaluated on BLEU1, BLEU2, BLEU3, ROUGEL, METEOR, CIDEr, SPICE, and SPIDEr scores for audio captioning and R1, R5, R10 and mARP10 scores for audio retrieval. We have conducted a handful of experiments that modify the baseline models for these tasks. Our final architecture for Automated Audio Captioning is close to the baseline performance, while our model for Language-Based Audio Retrieval has surpassed its counterpart.

EMF Exposure Mitigation in RIS-Assisted Multi-Beam Communications

This paper proposes a method for reducing {third-party} exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) by exploiting the capability of a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces' (RIS) to manipulate the electromagnetic environment. We consider users capable of multi-beam communication, such that a user can use a set of different propagation paths enabled by the RIS. The optimization objective is to find propagation alternatives that allow to maintain the target quality of service while minimizing the level of EMF at surrounding non-intended users (NUEs). We provide an evolutionary heuristic solution based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) for power equalization and multi-beam selection of a codebook at the Base Station. Our results show valuable insights into how RIS-assisted multi-beam communications can mitigate EMF exposure with minimal degradation of the spectral efficiency.

Distributed Information Bottleneck for a Primitive Gaussian Diamond MIMO Channel

This paper considers the distributed information bottleneck (D-IB) problem for a primitive Gaussian diamond channel with two relays and MIMO Rayleigh fading. The channel state is an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) process known at the relays but unknown to the destination. The relays are oblivious, i.e., they are unaware of the codebook and treat the transmitted signal as a random process with known statistics. The bottleneck constraints prevent the relays to communicate the channel state information (CSI) perfectly to the destination. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node knows the CSI and the relays can cooperate with each other, and also two achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that the lower bounds obtained by the proposed achievable schemes can come close to the upper bound on a wide range of relevant system parameters.

Hybrid Message Passing Algorithm for Downlink FDD Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

The design of message passing (MP) algorithms on factor graphs is an effective manner to implement channel estimation (CE) in wireless communication systems, which performance can be further improved by exploiting prior probability models that accurately match the channel characteristics. In this work, we study the CE problem in a downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. As the prior probability, we propose the Markov chain two-state Gaussian mixture with large variance differences (TSGM-LVD) model to exploit the structured sparsity in the angle-frequency domain of the channel. Existing single and combined MP rules cannot deal with the message computation of the proposed probability model. To overcome this issue, we present a general method to derive the hybrid message passing (HMP) rule, which allows the calculation of messages described by mixed linear and non-linear functions. Accordingly, we design the HMP-TSGM-LVD algorithm under the structured turbo framework (STF). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm converges faster and obtains better and more stable performance than its counterparts. In particular, the gain of the proposed approach is maximum (3 dB) in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime, while benchmark approaches experience oscillating behavior due to the improper prior model characterization.

Deep-Learning Aided Channel Training and Precoding in FDD Massive MIMO with Channel Statistics Knowledge

We propose a method for channel training and precoding in FDD massive MIMO based on deep neural networks (DNNs), exploiting Downlink (DL) channel covariance knowledge. The DNN is optimized to maximize the DL multi-user sum-rate, by producing a pre-beamforming matrix based on user channel covariances that maps the original channel vectors to effective channels. Measurements of these effective channels are received at the users via common pilot transmission and sent back to the base station (BS) through analog feedback without further processing. The BS estimates the effective channels from received feedback and constructs a linear precoder by concatenating the optimized pre-beamforming matrix with a zero-forcing precoder over the effective channels. We show that the proposed method yields significantly higher sum-rates than the state-of-the-art DNN-based channel training and precoding scheme, especially in scenarios with small pilot and feedback size relative to the channel coherence block length. Unlike many works in the literature, our proposition does not involve deployment of a DNN at the user side, which typically comes at a high computational cost and parameter-transmission overhead on the system, and is therefore considerably more practical.

A novel failure indexing approach with run-time values of program variables

Failures with different root causes can disturb multi-fault localization significantly, therefore, dividing failures into distinct groups according to the responsible faults is highly important. In such a failure indexing task, the crux lies in the failure proximity, which involves two points, i.e., how to effectively represent failures (e.g., extract the signature of failures) and how to properly measure the distance between the proxies for those failures. Existing studies have proposed a variety of failure proximities. The prevalent of them extract signatures of failures from execution coverage or suspiciousness ranking lists, and accordingly employ the Euclid or the Kendall tau distances. However, such strategies may not properly reflect the essential characteristics of failures, thus resulting in unsatisfactory effectiveness. In this paper, we propose a new failure proximity, namely, program variable-based failure proximity, and based on which present a novel failure indexing approach. Specifically, the proposed approach utilizes the run-time values of program variables to represent failures, and designs a set of rules to measure the similarity between them. Experimental results demonstrate the competitiveness of the proposed approach: it can achieve 44.12% and 27.59% improvements in faults number estimation, as well as 47.30% and 26.93% improvements in clustering effectiveness, compared with the state-of-the-art technique in this field, in simulated and real-world environments, respectively.

Power of Sine Hamiltonian Operator for Estimating the Eigenstate Energies on Quantum Computers

Quantum computers have been shown to have tremendous potential in solving difficult problems in quantum chemistry. In this paper, we propose a new classical quantum hybrid method, named as power of sine Hamiltonian operator (PSHO), to evaluate the eigenvalues of a given Hamiltonian (H). In PSHO, for any reference state, the normalized energy of the sine Hamiltonian power state can be determined. With the increase of the power, the initial reference state can converge to the eigenstate with the largest absolute eigenvalue in the coefficients of the expansion of reference state, and the normalized energy of the sine Hamiltonian power state converges to Ei. The ground and excited state energies of a Hamiltonian can be determined by taking different t values. The performance of the PSHO method is demonstrated by numerical calculations of the H4 and LiH molecules. Compared with the current popular variational quantum eigensolver method, PSHO does not need to design the ansatz circuits and avoids the complex nonlinear optimization problems. PSHO has great application potential in near term quantum devices.

FDD Massive MIMO Channel Training Optimal Rate Distortion Bounds and the Efficiency of one-shot Schemes

We study the problem of providing channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter in multi-user massive MIMO systems operating in frequency division duplexing (FDD). The wideband MIMO channel is a vector-valued random process correlated in time, space (antennas), and frequency (subcarriers). The base station (BS) broadcasts periodically beta_tr pilot symbols from its M antenna ports to K single-antenna users (UEs). Correspondingly, the K UEs send feedback messages about their channel state using beta_fb symbols in the uplink (UL). Using results from remote rate-distortion theory, we show that, as snr reaches infty, the optimal feedback strategy achieves a channel state estimation mean squared error (MSE) that behaves as Theta(1) if beta_tr < r and as Theta(snr^(-alpha)) when beta_tr >=r, where alpha = min(beta_fb/r, 1), where r is the rank of the channel covariance matrix. The MSE-optimal rate-distortion strategy implies encoding of long sequences of channel states, which would yield completely stale CSI and therefore poor multiuser precoding performance. Hence, we consider three practical one-shot CSI strategies with minimum one-slot delay and analyze their large-SNR channel estimation MSE behavior. These are: (1) digital feedback via entropy-coded scalar quantization (ECSQ), (2) analog feedback (AF), and (3) local channel estimation at the UEs and digital feedback. These schemes have different requirements in terms of knowledge of the channel statistics at the UE and at the BS. In particular, the latter strategy requires no statistical knowledge and is closely inspired by a CSI feedback scheme currently proposed in 3GPP standardization.
