Transfer of Adversarial Robustness Between Perturbation Types

We study the transfer of adversarial robustness of deep neural networks between different perturbation types. While most work on adversarial examples has focused on $L_\infty$ and $L_2$-bounded perturbations, these do not capture all types of perturbations available to an adversary. The present work evaluates 32 attacks of 5 different types against models adversarially trained on a 100-class subset of ImageNet. Our empirical results suggest that evaluating on a wide range of perturbation sizes is necessary to understand whether adversarial robustness transfers between perturbation types. We further demonstrate that robustness against one perturbation type may not always imply and may sometimes hurt robustness against other perturbation types. In light of these results, we recommend evaluation of adversarial defenses take place on a diverse range of perturbation types and sizes.

An Active-Passive Measurement Study of TCP Performance over LTE on High-speed Rails

High-speed rail (HSR) systems potentially provide a more efficient way of door-to-door transportation than airplane. However, they also pose unprecedented challenges in delivering seamless Internet service for on-board passengers. In this paper, we conduct a large-scale active-passive measurement study of TCP performance over LTE on HSR. Our measurement targets the HSR routes in China operating at above 300 km/h. We performed extensive data collection through both controlled setting and passive monitoring, obtaining 1732.9 GB data collected over 135719 km of trips. Leveraging such a unique dataset, we measure important performance metrics such as TCP goodput, latency, loss rate, as well as key characteristics of TCP flows, application breakdown, and users' behaviors. We further quantitatively study the impact of frequent cellular handover on HSR networking performance, and conduct in-depth examination of the performance of two widely deployed transport-layer protocols: TCP CUBIC and TCP BBR. Our findings reveal the performance of today's commercial HSR networks "in the wild", as well as identify several performance inefficiencies, which motivate us to design a simple yet effective congestion control algorithm based on BBR to further boost the throughput by up to 36.5%. They together highlight the need to develop dedicated protocol mechanisms that are friendly to extreme mobility.

Learning Vine Copula Models For Synthetic Data Generation

A vine copula model is a flexible high-dimensional dependence model which uses only bivariate building blocks. However, the number of possible configurations of a vine copula grows exponentially as the number of variables increases, making model selection a major challenge in development. In this work, we formulate a vine structure learning problem with both vector and reinforcement learning representation. We use neural network to find the embeddings for the best possible vine model and generate a structure. Throughout experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets, we show that our proposed approach fits the data better in terms of log-likelihood. Moreover, we demonstrate that the model is able to generate high-quality samples in a variety of applications, making it a good candidate for synthetic data generation.

Root Mean Square Minimum Distance as a Quality Metric for Localization Nanoscopy Images

A localization algorithm in stochastic optical localization nanoscopy plays an important role in obtaining a high-quality image. A universal and objective metric is crucial and necessary to evaluate qualities of nanoscopy images and performances of localization algorithms. In this paper, we propose root mean square minimum distance (RMSMD) as a quality metric for localization nanoscopy images. RMSMD measures an average, local, and mutual fitness between two sets of points. Its properties common to a distance metric as well as unique to itself are presented. The ambiguity, discontinuity, and inappropriateness of the metrics of accuracy, precision, recall, and Jaccard index, which are currently used in the literature, are analyzed. A numerical example demonstrates the advantages of RMSMD over the four existing metrics that fail to distinguish qualities of different nanoscopy images in certain conditions. The unbiased Gaussian estimator that achieves the Fisher information and Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of a single data frame is proposed to benchmark the quality of localization nanoscopy images and the performance of localization algorithms. The information-achieving estimator is simulated in an example and the result demonstrates the superior sensitivity of RMSMD over the other four metrics. As a universal and objective metric, RMSMD can be broadly employed in various applications to measure the mutual fitness of two sets of points.

Spiked covariances and principal components analysis in high-dimensional random effects models

We study principal components analyses in multivariate random and mixed effects linear models, assuming a spherical-plus-spikes structure for the covariance matrix of each random effect. We characterize the behavior of outlier sample eigenvalues and eigenvectors of MANOVA variance components estimators in such models under a high-dimensional asymptotic regime. Our results show that an aliasing phenomenon may occur in high dimensions, in which eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the MANOVA estimate for one variance component may be influenced by the other components. We propose an alternative procedure for estimating the true principal eigenvalues and eigenvectors that asymptotically corrects for this aliasing problem.

Temperature effect on the coupling between coherent longitudinal phonons and plasmons in n- and p-type GaAs

The coupling between longitudinal optical (LO) phonons and plasmons plays a fundamental role in determining the performance of doped semiconductor devices. In this work, we report a comparative investigation into the dependence of the coupling on temperature and doping in n- and p-type GaAs by using ultrafast optical phonon spectroscopy. A suppression of coherent oscillations has been observed in p-type GaAs at lower temperature, strikingly different from n-type GaAs and other materials in which coherent oscillations are strongly enhanced by cooling. We attribute this unexpected observation to a cooling-induced elongation of the depth of the depletion layer which effectively increases the screening time of surface field due to a slow diffusion of photoexcited carriers in p-type GaAs. Such an increase breaks the requirement for the generation of coherent LO phonons and, in turn, LO phonon-plasmon coupled modes because of their delayed formation in time.

Novel voltage signal at proximity effect induced superconducting transition temperature in gold nanowires

We observed a novel voltage peak in the proximity effect induced superconducting gold (Au) nanowire while cooling the sample through the superconducting transition temperature. The voltage peak turned into dip in the warming process. The voltage peak (or dip) was found to be closely related to the emergence (vanishing) of the proximity induced superconductivity in the Au nanowire. The amplitude of the voltage signal depends on the temperature scanning rate and it cannot be detected when the temperature is changed slower than 0.03 K/min. This transient feature suggests the non-equilibrium property of the effect. The voltage peak could be understood by Ginzburg-Landau model as a combined result of the emergence of Cooper pairs with relatively lower free energy in W contact and the non-equilibrium diffusion of Cooper pairs and quasiparticles.

An automatic taxonomy of galaxy morphology using unsupervised machine learning

We present an unsupervised machine learning technique that automatically segments and labels galaxies in astronomical imaging surveys using only pixel data. Distinct from previous unsupervised machine learning approaches used in astronomy we use no pre-selection or pre-filtering of target galaxy type to identify galaxies that are similar. We demonstrate the technique on the HST Frontier Fields. By training the algorithm using galaxies from one field (Abell 2744) and applying the result to another (MACS0416.1-2403), we show how the algorithm can cleanly separate early and late type galaxies without any form of pre-directed training for what an 'early' or 'late' type galaxy is. We then apply the technique to the HST CANDELS fields, creating a catalogue of approximately 60,000 classifications. We show how the automatic classification groups galaxies of similar morphological (and photometric) type, and make the classifications public via a catalogue, a visual catalogue and galaxy similarity search. We compare the CANDELS machine-based classifications to human-based classifications from the Galaxy Zoo: CANDELS project. Although there is not a direct mapping between Galaxy Zoo and our hierarchical labelling, we demonstrate a good level of concordance between human and machine classifications. Finally, we show how the technique can be used to identify rarer objects and present new lensed galaxy candidates from the CANDELS imaging.

Laguerre and Jacobi analogues of the Warren process

We define Laguerre and Jacobi analogues of the Warren process. That is, we construct local dynamics on a triangular array of particles so that the projections to each level recover the Laguerre and Jacobi eigenvalue processes of König-O'Connell and Doumerc and the fixed time distributions recover the joint distribution of eigenvalues in multilevel Laguerre and Jacobi random matrix ensembles. Our techniques extend and generalize the framework of intertwining diffusions developed by Pal-Shkolnikov. One consequence is the construction of particle systems with local interactions whose fixed time distribution recovers the hard edge of random matrix theory. An appendix by Andrey Sarantsev establishes strong existence and uniqueness for solutions to SDER's satisfied by these processes.

Prediction of Stable Ground-State Lithium Polyhydrides under High Pressures

Hydrogen-rich compounds are important for understanding the dissociation of dense molecular hydrogen, as well as searching for room temperature Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors. A recent high pressure experiment reported the successful synthesis of novel insulating lithium polyhydrides when above 130 GPa. However, the results are in sharp contrast to previous theoretical prediction by PBE functional that around this pressure range all lithium polyhydrides (LiHn (n = 2-8)) should be metallic. In order to address this discrepancy, we perform unbiased structure search with first principles calculation by including the van der Waals interaction that was ignored in previous prediction to predict the high pressure stable structures of LiHn (n = 2-11, 13) up to 200 GPa. We reproduce the previously predicted structures, and further find novel compositions that adopt more stable structures. The van der Waals functional (vdW-DF) significantly alters the relative stability of lithium polyhydrides, and predicts that the stable stoichiometries for the ground-state should be LiH2 and LiH9 at 130-170 GPa, and LiH2, LiH8 and LiH10 at 180-200 GPa. Accurate electronic structure calculation with GW approximation indicates that LiH, LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are insulative up to at least 208 GPa, and all other lithium polyhydrides are metallic. The calculated vibron frequencies of these insulating phases are also in accordance with the experimental infrared (IR) data. This reconciliation with the experimental observation suggests that LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are the possible candidates for lithium polyhydrides synthesized in that experiment. Our results reinstate the credibility of density functional theory in description H-rich compounds, and demonstrate the importance of considering van der Waals interaction in this class of materials.

Affine Macdonald conjectures and special values of Felder-Varchenko functions

We refine the statement of the denominator and evaluation conjectures for affine Macdonald polynomials proposed by Etingof-Kirillov Jr. and prove the first non-trivial cases of these conjectures. Our results provide a q-deformation of the computation of genus 1 conformal blocks via elliptic Selberg integrals by Felder-Stevens-Varchenko. They allow us to give precise formulations for the affine Macdonald conjectures in the general case which are consistent with computer computations. Our method applies recent work of the second named author to relate these conjectures in the case of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ to evaluations of certain theta hypergeometric integrals defined by Felder-Varchenko. We then evaluate the resulting integrals, which may be of independent interest, by well-chosen applications of the elliptic beta integral introduced by Spiridonov.

Spin Fluctuation Induced Linear Magnetoresistance in Ultrathin Superconducting FeSe Films

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe/STO has trigged great research interest to reveal a range of exotic physical phenomena in this novel material. Here we present a temperature dependent magnetotransport measurement for ultrathin FeSe/STO films with different thickness and protection layers. Remarkably, a surprising linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is observed around the superconducting transition temperatures but absent otherwise. The experimental LMR can be reproduced by magnetotransport calculations based on a model of magnetic field dependent disorder induced by spin fluctuation. Thus, the observed LMR in coexistence with superconductivity provides the first magnetotransport signature for spin fluctuation around the superconducting transition region in ultrathin FeSe/STO films.

On the origin of critical temperature enhancement in atomically-thin superconductors

Recent experiments showed that thinning gallium, iron selenide and 2H tantalum disulfide to single/several monoatomic layer(s) enhances their superconducting critical temperatures. Here, we characterize these superconductors by extracting the absolute values of the London penetration depth, the superconducting energy gap, and the relative jump in specific heat at the transition temperature from their self-field critical currents. Our central finding is that the enhancement in transition temperature for these materials arises from the opening of an additional superconducting gap, while retaining a largely unchanged bulk superconducting gap. Literature data reveals that ultrathin niobium films similarly develop a second superconducting gap. Based on the available data, it seems that, for type-II superconductors, a new superconducting band appears when the film thickness becomes smaller than the out-of-plane coherence length. The same mechanism may also be the cause of enhanced interface superconductivity.

Development of a computer-aided design software for dental splint in orthognathic surgery

In the orthognathic surgery, dental splints are important and necessary to help the surgeon reposition the maxilla or mandible. However, the traditional methods of manual design of dental splints are difficult and time-consuming. The research on computer-aided design software for dental splints is rarely reported. Our purpose is to develop a novel special software named EasySplint to design the dental splints conveniently and efficiently. The design can be divided into two steps, which are the generation of initial splint base and the Boolean operation between it and the maxilla-mandibular model. The initial splint base is formed by ruled surfaces reconstructed using the manually picked points. Then, a method to accomplish Boolean operation based on the distance filed of two meshes is proposed. The interference elimination can be conducted on the basis of marching cubes algorithm and Boolean operation. The accuracy of the dental splint can be guaranteed since the original mesh is utilized to form the result surface. Using EasySplint, the dental splints can be designed in about 10 minutes and saved as a stereo lithography (STL) file for 3D printing in clinical applications. Three phantom experiments were conducted and the efficiency of our method was demonstrated.

Measurement of the transfer function for a spoke cavity of C-ADS Injector I

The spoke cavities mounted in the China Accelerator Driven sub-critical System (C-ADS) have high quality factor(Q) and very small bandwidth, making them very sensitive to mechanical perturbations whether external or self-induced. The transfer function is used to characterize the response of the cavity eigen frequency to the perturbations. This paper describes a method to measure the transfer function of a spoke cavity. The measured Lorentz transfer function shows there are 206 Hz and 311 Hz mechanical eigenmodes excited by Lorentz force in the cavity of C-ADS, and the measured piezo fast tuner transfer function shows there are 12 mechanical eigenmodes from 0 to 500 Hz. According to these results, some effective measures have been taken to weaken the influence from helium pressure fluctuation, avoid mechanical resonances and improve the reliability of RF system.

Traces of intertwiners for quantum affine algebras and difference equations (after Etingof-Schiffmann-Varchenko)

We modify and give complete proofs for the results of Etingof-Schiffmann-Varchenko on traces of intertwiners of untwisted quantum affine algebras in the opposite coproduct and the standard grading. More precisely, we show that certain normalized generalized traces for $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})$ solve four commuting systems of q-difference equations: the Macdonald-Ruijsenaars, dual Macdonald-Ruijsenaars, q-KZB, and dual q-KZB equations. In addition, we show a symmetry property for these renormalized trace functions. Our modifications are motivated by their appearance in recent work of the author.

Matrix models for multilevel Heckman-Opdam and multivariate Bessel measures

We study multilevel matrix ensembles at general beta by identifying them with a class of processes defined via the branching rules for multivariate Bessel and Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions. For beta = 1, 2, we express the joint multilevel density of the eigenvalues of a generalized beta-Wishart matrix as a multivariate Bessel ensemble, generalizing a result of Dieker-Warren. In the null case, we prove the conjecture of Borodin-Gorin that the joint multilevel density of the beta-Jacobi ensemble is given by a principally specialized Heckman-Opdam measure.

Tuner control system of spoke012 SRF cavity for C-ADS injector I at IHEP

A new tuner control system of spoke superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity has been developed and applied to cryomodule I (CM1) of C-ADS injector I at IHEP. We have successfully implemented the tuner controllerfor the first time and achieved a cavity tuning phase error of 0.7degrees (about 4 Hz peak to peak) in the presence of electromechanical coupled resonance. This paper will present the preliminary experimental results based on the new tuner controller under proton beam commissioning.
