Surface Chern-Simons theory for third-order topological insulators and superconductors

Three-dimensional 3rd-order topological insulators (TOTIs) and superconductors (TOTSCs), as the highestorder topological phases hosting zero corner modes in physical dimension, has sparked extensive research interest. However, such topological states have not been discovered in reality due to the lack of experimental schemes of realization. Here, we propose a novel surface Chern-Simons (CS) theory for 3rd-order topological phases, and show that the theory enables a feasible and systematic design of TOTIs and TOTSCs. We show that the emergence of zero Dirac (Majorana) corner modes is entirely captured by an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ CS term that can be further characterized by a novel two-particle Wess-Zumino (WZ) term uncovered here in the surfaces of three-dimensional topological materials. Importantly, our proposed CS term characterization and two-particle WZ term mechanism provide a unique perspective to design TOTIs (TOTSCs) in terms of minimal ingredients, feasibly guiding the search for underlying materials, with promising candidates being discussed. This work shall advance both the theoretical and experimental research for highest-order topological matters.

A Schur's type volume comparison theorem

In this paper, inspired by Schur's comparison theorem about curves in Euclidean space, we mainly provide a Schur's type volume comparison theorem, which is about the volumes of the boundaries of open balls in a complete $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with Ricci$\geq (n-1)k$.

Two-particle Berry phase mechanism for Dirac and Majorana Kramers pairs of corner modes

We uncover a novel two-particle Berry phase mechanism to realize exotic corner modes in second-order topological insulators (TIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) with time-reversal symmetry. We show that the nontrivial pseudospin textures of edge states in two different types of two-dimensional TIs give rise to the novel two-particle geometric phases in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels, respectively, for which the edge mass domain walls or intrinsic $π$-junctions emerge across corners when an external magnetic field or $s$-wave superconductivity is considered, hosting Dirac or Majorana corner modes. Remarkably, with this mechanism we predict the Majorana Kramers pair of corner modes by directly coupling the edge of a type-II time-reversal invariant TI to a uniform $s$-wave SC, in sharp contrast to the previous proposals which rely on unconventional SC pairing or complex setting for fine-tuned SC $π$-junction. We find Au/GaAs(111) to be a realistic material candidate for realizing such Majorana Kramers pair of corner modes.

Convergence of one-dimensional stationary mean field games with vanishing potential

We consider the one-dimensional stationary first-order mean-field game (MFG) system with the coupling between the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the transport equation. In both cases that the coupling is strictly increasing and decreasing with respect to the density of the population, we show that when the potential vanishes the regular solution of MFG system converges to the one of the corresponding integrable MFG system. Furthermore, we obtain the convergence rate of such limit.

Observation of Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes during Minor Disruptions in Ohmic Plasmas

Toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) excited in purely ohmically heated plasmas without any auxiliary heating have been identified for the first time in the SUNIST spherical tokamak. The TAE modes are observed during minor disruptions and have a frequency range of 150-500 kHz. The mode structure analysis indicates the existence of both m/n=-3/-1 and -4/-1 harmonics, propagating in the electron diamagnetic direction in the laboratory frame of reference. These TAEs appear simultaneously with the generation of runaway electrons in the current quench phase, accompanying with the density sweeping during the minor disruption. Possible driving mechanisms and potential applications of these TAEs are discussed.
