AI Research Agents Narrow Scientific Exploration

AI research agents now support large-scale AI-assisted scientific discovery. We examine whether AI-generated ideas broaden scientific exploration or primarily reinforce existing work. Using five agent frameworks and five large language models, we generate 219,655 ideas for different scientific fields. Across experiments, four consistent patterns emerge. First, AI-generated ideas are more concentrated than human-authored papers within the same research area. Second, they remain much closer to starting literature than later human follow-on work does. Third, AI-generated ideas align less with future human research. Last, AI-generated ideas are located in lower-impact regions of the historical scientific landscape. Overall, current AI research agents appear better suited to local elaboration than to broadening scientific exploration.

Multiwavelength Analysis of Six Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients

We present multiwavelength observations and analysis of six luminous fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) discovered in Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey data. We identified these LFBOTs from their fast light-curve evolution ($t_{1/2}\leq 12 $d), blue colors at peak brightness ($g-r\leq-0.5 $mag), a visible host galaxy, high optical luminosity ($M_g<-20$), and an X-ray or radio detection. With the exception of AT2024aehp (ZTF24abygbss), these transients exhibit peaks in their $10\,$GHz radio light curves at $t_{\text{rest}} \approx 50-100$ d, with peak radio luminosities ranging from $10^{38}-10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Modeling the radio emission as synchrotron radiation indicates a fast ($v=0.1-0.3c$) shock in a dense ($n_e\approx10^{3}-10^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$) medium. The X-ray emission varies by $\approx2$ orders of magnitude in luminosity ($10^{42}-10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) at $t_{\text{rest}}\sim20 $d. Analysis of the host-galaxy photometry and spectroscopy for each transient shows that they are predominantly nonnuclear (a few kpc offset) with star-forming host galaxies of stellar masses $10^{9}-10^{11} ,M_\odot$. Unlike all other LFBOTs to date, AT2024aehp exhibited a luminous ($M<-19 $mag) plateau in the optical light curve; spectra during this plateau phase showed a featureless blue continuum. The $6-15$ GHz radio emission of AT2024aehp brightened by over an order of magnitude from $t_{\text{rest}} \approx70 $d to $t_{\mathrm{rest}} \approx130 $d. The mostly consistent radio behavior between optically selected LFBOTs implies a similar circumburst medium, leading us to prefer a progenitor scenario in which mass is lost in a consistent way shortly prior to the terminal event, such as a massive star merging with a compact object.

Clinical Translation of Brain-Computer Interface in China: A Landscape Analysis of Investigator-Initiated Trials, Registered Clinical Trials, and Regulatory Approval

Neurological injury affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, yet the loss of motor or communication functions resulting from stroke, spinal cord injury, and neurodegenerative disease remains largely irreversible with existing therapies. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a promising pathway for restoring these functions by decoding neural activity into commands that control an external device. Here, we present the first quantitative analysis of China's BCI translational ecosystem, integrating evidence from three pillars: investigator-initiated trials (IITs), registered clinical trials, and regulatory-approved products. We analyzed 134 clinical trials from the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR), 26 IITs, and five BCI-related products approved by the National Medical Products Administration as of June 2026. Results demonstrate that clinical trial registration has increased rapidly since 2020, with research centers concentrated primarily in Guangdong, Shanghai, and Jiangsu. Non-invasive systems predominated, accounting for 79.1% of registered studies, with stroke rehabilitation as the leading indication (65.0%). As of June 2026, five BCI-related products received regulatory approvals, including the world's first approved semi-invasive implantable BCI, an invasive closed-loop deep brain stimulation system with real-time local field potential recording, and three non-invasive EEG-based rehabilitation systems. Collectively, these findings characterize a rapidly expanding BCI translational pipeline in China, spanning from early clinical research to regulatory approval. However, long-term implant stability, standardization of clinical infrastructure and workflows, and generalizability of decoding algorithms remain critical barriers to widespread clinical adoption. Addressing these challenges will be essential for integrating BCI technologies into routine clinical practice.

X-rays breaking out of pre-explosion ejecta mark a supernova's first light

Massive stars die as core-collapse supernovae, whose optical light emerges days after the implosion. Theory predicts that the initial collapse-driven shock, upon breaking through the star and dense circumstellar medium, emits a brief thermal flash of soft X-rays and ultraviolet. Yet these elusive first signals have remained largely undetected, owing to limited wide-field soft X-ray monitoring. Here we report the discovery of a soft X-ray flash, EP260321a, followed days later by a broad-lined supernova from an envelope-stripped progenitor. Its X-ray spectrum, best modeled with blackbody, establishes it as the long-sought archetypal shock breakout. The burst's duration and energetics place the breakout at a radius of 300 solar radii, tracing a dense surrounding shell and revealing abrupt mass ejection within the final month before collapse.

Learning social norms enhances compatibility in dynamic human-AI coordination

Humans continuously coordinate with others in dynamic interactions, often through implicit, hard-to-quantify social norms that act as shared tacit expectations among interacting agents. As AI agents, including large language models (LLMs), become embedded in daily life, they increasingly participate in such interactions and reshape social interaction structures. Yet they often fail to coordinate with humans in an effective, considerate, and natural manner. We hypothesize that this gap arises because existing approaches align model behavior with human demonstrations without explicitly quantifying the underlying norms that generate such behavior. We selected pedestrian-vehicle interaction as a representative dynamic interaction and developed a simplified experimental platform that captures its key interactive features. From 3,456 dynamic human interactions collected via this platform, we identified three principles underlying human social norms: outcome predictability, value alignment, and advantage awareness. Incorporating these principles into AI agents significantly improves human-AI coordination. In the closed-loop interaction task with humans, the social-norm-informed LLM achieved a nearly fourfold higher total score than the baseline strategy and outperformed human-human interactions by 43%. These findings indicate that formalizing tacit social norms into explicit, quantifiable principles can enable AI agents to achieve mutually beneficial coordination in dynamic interactions, supporting their more natural integration into human society.

PUF: Plug-and-Play Uncertainty-Aware Fusion for Online 3D Scene Graph Generation

Online 3D scene graph generation builds a persistent, structured representation of a scene by incrementally fusing 2D observations into a global 3D graph. Existing online methods treat this fusion as a fully deterministic pipeline, where we identify three sources of uncertainty that are overlooked: observation, 2D model, and 3D representation. We propose PUF: a Plug-and-play, Uncertainty-aware, and training-free Fusion framework. Scene graph node association is reformulated as a probabilistic likelihood over semantic and spatial factors, replacing binary accept/reject gates. Dirichlet evidence accumulation distributes class and relationship evidence across plausible candidates proportional to association likelihood. An optional class-conditional prior completes edges for sparsely or never co-observed object pairs. We instantiate PUF with both a 3D Gaussian and a 3D voxel backend and observe consistent improvements, demonstrating its ability to generalize across different representations. Experiments on the 3DSSG and ReplicaSSG benchmarks show that our method substantially outperforms existing approaches while maintaining real-time latency. These results establish uncertainty-aware fusion as a principled and effective paradigm for online 3D scene understanding. The source code is publicly available at https://github.com/yyyyangyi/PUF.

Ringdown of a black hole sourced by a Burkert-density effective anisotropic source

We construct a static, spherically symmetric black hole spacetime sourced by an effective anisotropic matter distribution whose energy density follows the cored Burkert profile. The source should be understood as a Burkert-density effective fluid, rather than as a microscopic model of pressureless collisionless dark matter. Solving the Einstein equations under this closure condition, we obtain an analytic Schwarzschild-like metric that reduces smoothly to the vacuum Schwarzschild solution when the halo contribution vanishes. We then study axial gravitational perturbations of this geometry and determine the associated quasinormal spectrum using complementary frequency-domain and time-domain methods. We find that increasing either the core radius \(r_0\) or the central density \(ρ_0\) shifts the ringdown toward lower frequency and weaker damping, with the effect of \(r_0\) being more pronounced. The close agreement among the numerical extractions supports the reliability of the results. Our analysis provides a useful benchmark for assessing how a cored Burkert-type effective environment can modify black hole ringdown.

Replication in Visual Diffusion Models: A Survey and Outlook

Visual diffusion models have revolutionized the field of creative AI, producing high-quality and diverse content. However, they inevitably memorize training images or videos, subsequently replicating their concepts, content, or styles during inference. This phenomenon raises significant concerns about privacy, security, and copyright within generated outputs. In this survey, we provide the first comprehensive review of replication in visual diffusion models, marking a novel contribution to the field by systematically categorizing the existing studies into unveiling, understanding, and mitigating this phenomenon. Specifically, unveiling mainly refers to the methods used to detect replication instances. Understanding involves analyzing the underlying mechanisms and factors that contribute to this phenomenon. Mitigation focuses on developing strategies to reduce or eliminate replication. Beyond these aspects, we also review papers focusing on its real-world influence. For instance, in the context of healthcare, replication is critically worrying due to privacy concerns related to patient data. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of the ongoing challenges, such as the difficulty in detecting and benchmarking replication, and outlines future directions including the development of more robust mitigation techniques. By synthesizing insights from diverse studies, this paper aims to equip researchers and practitioners with a deeper understanding at the intersection between AI technology and social good. Uni-OPD: Unifying On-Policy Distillation with a Dual-Perspective Recipe

On-policy distillation (OPD) has recently emerged as an effective post-training paradigm for consolidating the capabilities of specialized expert models into a single student model. Despite its empirical success, the conditions under which OPD yields reliable improvement remain poorly understood. In this work, we identify two fundamental bottlenecks that limit effective OPD: insufficient exploration of informative states and unreliable teacher supervision for student rollouts. Building on this insight, we propose Uni-OPD, a unified OPD framework that generalizes across Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), centered on a dual-perspective optimization strategy. Specifically, from the student's perspective, we adopt two data balancing strategies to promote exploration of informative student-generated states during training. From the teacher's perspective, we show that reliable supervision hinges on whether aggregated token-level guidance remains order-consistent with the outcome reward. To this end, we develop an outcome-guided margin calibration mechanism to restore order consistency between correct and incorrect trajectories. We conduct extensive experiments on 5 domains and 16 benchmarks covering diverse settings, including single-teacher and multi-teacher distillation across LLMs and MLLMs, strong-to-weak distillation, and cross-modal distillation. Our results verify the effectiveness and versatility of Uni-OPD and provide practical insights into reliable OPD.

FUSE: FK-Steered Multi-Modal Flow Matching for Efficient Simulation-Based Posterior Estimation

Simulation-Based Inference (SBI) is critical for scientific discovery, with generative models offering a promising path toward efficient inference. However, existing methods struggle with effective multimodal modeling. They often rely on brute-force fusion strategies that ignore the structural disparities between parameters and observations, thus limiting estimation fidelity. In this work, we introduce FUSE (Feynman-Kac steered mUlti-modal flow matching for efficient Simulation-based posterior Estimation). Unlike prior work, FUSE employs a dual-track architecture that preserves the distinct features of multimodal inputs while facilitating dynamic interaction. Additionally, we propose an FK-steered sampling strategy that leverages intermediate observation likelihoods to guide the generative trajectories, effectively improving the sample quality during inference. Our approach outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on standard SBI benchmarks, producing posteriors that closely match ground-truth MCMC. Furthermore, in a real-world exoplanet orbital estimation task, FUSE successfully resolves complex parameter degeneracies that challenge existing methods, highlighting its potential to accelerate complex scientific discoveries in astrophysics and beyond.

CubifyGS: Object-Centric 3D Gaussian Splatting for Lifelong Dynamic Scene Maintenance

Lifelong scene mapping under rigid object rearrangement remains a fundamental challenge in robotics. While 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) enables high-fidelity modeling, primitive-level updates often cause persistent ghosting and slow recovery. We propose CubifyGS, an object-level mapping framework that shifts dynamic maintenance from passive re-optimization to active asset management. CubifyGS models movable instances as reusable Gaussian assets, detects object appearance and disappearance, and updates maps through asset retrieval, rigid transformation, and explicit pruning rather than reconstruction from scratch. To address geometric voids and local photometric mismatch after such edits, we further propose an event-triggered adaptive optimization strategy that focuses computation on affected regions. We validate our approach on a newly constructed high-fidelity dynamic benchmark, demonstrating that CubifyGS improves artifact suppression and maintenance efficiency over representative reproducible baselines in the evaluated object-rearrangement setting.

FastCSP: Accelerated Molecular Crystal Structure Prediction with Universal Model for Atoms

Molecular crystal structure prediction (CSP) is essential for applications in pharmaceuticals and organic electronics. However, CSP remains challenging and computationally intensive due to the need to explore a large search space with sub-kJ/mol accuracy to distinguish between competing polymorphs. While dispersion-inclusive density functional theory (DFT) offers the necessary precision, its computational cost is impractical for a large number of putative structures. Here, we present FastCSP, an open-source, end-to-end CSP workflow driven entirely by a single pretrained universal machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP), the Universal Model for Atoms (UMA), without any system-specific fine-tuning or DFT calculations. FastCSP integrates conformer generation, random structure generation via Genarris 3, geometry optimization, free energy evaluation, and conformer energy corrections, all powered by UMA. Benchmarked on 28 semi-rigid and 10 flexible molecules spanning 74 experimental polymorphs, FastCSP reliably recovers all known structures, ranking them within 9 kJ/mol of the global minimum. UMA reproduces dispersion-inclusive DFT results with high fidelity across chemically diverse compounds. Conformer corrections are particularly beneficial for flexible compounds with conformational polymorphism, such as ROY. UMA's accuracy, transferability, and computational cost thus eliminate the need for classical force fields in early-stage screening and DFT-based re-ranking in CSP workflows. The open-source release of the entire FastCSP workflow lowers the barrier to accessing CSP, enabling both pharmaceutical-grade and high-throughput polymorph screening within practical computational reach.

Evidence for Asymmetric Ejecta and Circumstellar Material in SN 2023ixf Inferred from Extensive Nebular-phase Observations

We present extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the nearby Type II supernova (SN II) 2023ixf in the nebular phase from +89 days to +749 days after explosion, supplemented with NIR and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy from the James Webb Space Telescope. The H$α$ emission profile shows complex evolution, with the emergence of high-velocity components consistent with the outer ejecta interacting with extended, low-density circumstellar material (CSM). We find that the H$α$ profile at an intermediate epoch (around +375 d) can be reconstructed by scaling an earlier decay-powered component and a later-phase shock-powered component, which revealed an additional intermediate-width component. This is consistent with the ejecta crashing into the initially aspherical dense CSM that has been swept-up by the forward shock. In the NIR, we find double-peaked emission from Mg I $1.504\ {\rm μm}$, Na I $2.206\ {\rm μm}$, and [Ni I] $3.12\ {\rm μm}$ between +200 d and +374 d, consistent with an asymmetric distribution of Ni-rich material that heats the ejecta inhomogeneously. We posit a disk-like CSM geometry and an ejecta geometry in which at least two large Ni-rich plumes lead to the observed line-profile diversity.

EAGLE-360: Embodied Active Global-to-Local Exploration in 360$^\circ$

While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in standard visual understanding, adapting them for active visual search in 360$^\circ$ panoramic environments exposes fundamental limitations. Specifically, standard MLLMs struggle to effectively model inherent panoramic properties, such as severe polar distortion and continuous cylindrical topologies, which significantly degrades target detection accuracy. Consequently, existing panoramic search methods attempt to compensate by relying heavily on fragmented local viewpoints. Burdened by rigid initialization and a lack of global panoramic priors, these approaches suffer from myopic, inefficient exploration and struggle with robust error recovery when targets are out of view. To overcome these challenges, we propose EAGLE-360, a novel Embodied Active Global-to-Local Exploration framework. Rather than performing exhaustive local searches, EAGLE-360 leverages global priors to establish an initial holistic perspective, iteratively reasoning and progressively narrowing the search space. Architecturally, we adapt RoPE Rolling, a coordinate-shifting positional encoding mechanism, to seamlessly model the continuous topologies of panoramas. To facilitate this paradigm, we construct the large-scale EAGLE-360 dataset, comprising 14,000+ 4K panoramas and 70,000+ rounds of high-quality VQA dialogues. By employing a training pipeline that integrates Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), we effectively elicit complex spatial reasoning and tool-calling capabilities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that EAGLE-360 establishes a new state-of-the-art for 360$^\circ$ visual search, achieving nearly an 8-fold increase in accuracy over the base model while significantly enhancing exploration efficiency.

Alignment Is All You Need For X-to-4D Generation

Generative diffusion models excel at synthesizing high-quality images, videos, and 3D content under multimodal control. However, arbitrary user-defined modality-to-4D (X-to-4D) generation remains challenging due to the high cost of constructing diverse datasets and the limited scalability of existing methods. This paper presents Align4D, a flexible framework that translates any-modal input into coherent video-3D pairs, using video to guide 4D motion and 3D data to shape 4D geometry. Align4D introduces three key techniques: (1) Object Distance Alignment, which searches Video-Aligned and Multiview-Aligned Object Distances (VAOD/MAOD), respectively, to reconcile 4D renderings with video and the priors of multiview diffusion models; (2) Motion-Geometry Joint Alignment, which constrains known and unknown views through synchronized video and 3D inputs, ensuring consistent 4D generation; and (3) Asynchronous Optimization, which decouples Gaussian attribute and deformation network training to enhance motion and geometry fidelity. We further propose the X4D dataset, which integrates prompt, image, video, and 3D data for benchmarking. Experiments on X4D and Consistent4D demonstrate that Align4D achieves state-of-the-art quality and consistency in X-to-4D generation. Project page: https://miaoqiaowei.github.io/Align4D/.

Optimization Algorithm for Determining the Source Surface Radius Based on Parker Solar Probe in situ Measurements from Encounters 1 to 19

The Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) extrapolation is a method for estimating the large scale coronal magnetic field from photospheric magnetograms. The source surface serves as the outer boundary of its solution domain, and is typically a spherical surface. An appropriate source surface radius ($R_{ss}$) enables more accurate identification of the coronal magnetic field topology and estimation of the open flux, thereby potentially enhancing the accuracy of space weather modeling. We prove the well-posedness of the PFSS forward problem and establish the existence and uniqueness of the optimal source surface by combining compactness of the admissible set with continuity of the objective functional. The objective functional is the mean squared error (MSE) between PFSS extrapolation and Parker Solar Probe (PSP) radial magnetic field measurements after Parker spiral backmapping and radial scaling for Encounters 1-19. The optimization algorithm is validated with an analytical solution, and Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) in situ measurements are used as an independent cross-validation dataset. Additional evaluation metrics and Pareto analysis are used to identify the dominant metrics between open flux and polarity prediction accuracy. Our results show that the optimal $R_{ss}$ derived from the algorithm generally increase from solar minimum into the ascending phase of solar cycle 25. The optimized solution improves open flux agreement while preserving or improving polarity prediction accuracy relative to $2.5R_{s}$. The Pareto frontiers show a transition for dominant metrics from open flux during solar minimum to polarity prediction accuracy during the ascending phase.

Restore3D: Breathing Life into Broken Objects with Shape and Texture Restoration

Restoring incomplete or damaged 3D objects is crucial for cultural heritage preservation, occluded object reconstruction, and artistic design. Existing methods primarily focus on geometric completion, often neglecting texture restoration and struggling with relatively complex and diverse objects. We introduce Restore3D, a novel framework that simultaneously restores both the shape and texture of broken objects using multi-view images. To address limited training data, we develop an automated data generation pipeline that synthesizes paired incomplete-complete samples from large-scale 3D datasets. Central to Restore3D is a multi-view model, enhanced by a carefully designed Mask Self-Perceiver module with a Depth-Aware Mask Rectifier. The rectified masks learned by the self-perceiver guide an image integration and enhancement phase, helping retain observed shape and texture patterns while refining the generated regions and mitigating the low-resolution limitations of the base model, yielding high-resolution, semantically coherent, and view-consistent multi-view images. A coarse-to-fine reconstruction strategy is then employed to recover detailed textured 3D meshes from refined multi-view images. Experiments on synthetic and real broken-object benchmarks show that Restore3D improves multi-view restoration quality and textured-mesh reconstruction over representative inpainting, completion, and reconstruction baselines in the evaluated settings. JWST Observations of Calcium-Strong Transients: I. Complex Nebular He Emission in SN 2024uj

We present the first JWST observations of a Calcium-Strong Transient (CaST), SN 2024uj, a rare class of supernovae (SNe) with observable properties that are consistent with both thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs (WDs) and the core collapse of massive stars. SN 2024uj is offset by $\sim6.6$ kpc from its host and exhibits a double-peaked light curve consistent with shock cooling of nearby circumstellar material. At early times, its optical spectra resemble those of normal SNe Ib, but strong [Ca II] $λλ$7291, 7324 emission emerges between $+$2 and $+$17 days after maximum light. Radiative-transfer models of a massive stripped He star cannot reproduce this early forbidden Ca emission, even with artificially enhanced surface Ca, whereas it arises naturally in thermonuclear scenarios. The $+$150 d JWST/NIRSpec spectrum reveals highly asymmetric, multicomponent He I at both 1.083 and 2.058 $μ$m. The He extends to $\gtrsim+$5000 km/s, with a strong, narrow peak at $+$1500 km/s, indicating that He is distributed throughout the ejecta with a concentration offset from center. This He distribution overlaps central [Ca II] and [O I], implying a degree of mixing difficult to produce in a massive star explosion. The He peak might further trace interaction with a shocked, ejected companion in a thermonuclear system. The NIRSpec spectrum also shows molecular CO emission and a rising continuum that, together with a 10 $μ$m photometric detection, indicates dust emission extending into the mid-infrared. Given the remote environment, early forbidden Ca, mixed He/Ca/O ejecta, and possible companion signature, we favor a thermonuclear origin for SN 2024uj involving at least one low-mass, partially He-rich WD.
