Transits of the QCD Critical Point

We analyze the evolution of hydrodynamic fluctuations in a heavy ion collision as the system passes close to the QCD critical point. We introduce two small dimensionless parameters $λ$ and $Δ_s$ to characterize the evolution. $λ$ compares the microscopic relaxation time (away from the critical point) to the expansion rate $λ\equiv τ_0/τ_Q$, and $Δ_s$ compares the baryon to entropy ratio, $n/s$, to its critical value, $Δ_s\equiv (n/s - n_c/s_c)/(n_c/s_c)$. We determine how the evolution of critical hydrodynamic fluctuations depends parametrically on $λ$ and $Δ_s$. Finally, we use this parametric reasoning to estimate the critical fluctuations and correlation length for a heavy ion collision, and to give guidance to the experimental search for the QCD critical point.

Experimental demonstration of work fluctuations along a shortcut to adiabaticity with a superconducting Xmon qubit

In a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) protocol, the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian, which suppresses the non-adiabatic transition of a reference `adiabatic' trajectory, induces a quantum uncertainty of the work cost in the framework of quantum thermodynamics. Following a theory derived recently [Funo et al 2017 Phys. Rev. Lett. 118 100602], we perform an experimental measurement of the STA work statistics in a high-quality superconducting Xmon qubit. Through the frozen-Hamiltonian and frozen-population techniques, we experimentally realize the two-point measurement of the work distribution for given initial eigenstates. Our experimental statistics verify (i) the conservation of the average STA work and (ii) the equality between the STA excess of work fluctuations and the quantum geometric tensor.

Searching for the QCD critical point via the rapidity dependence of cumulants

The search for a possible critical point in the QCD phase diagram is ongoing in heavy ion collision experiments at RHIC which scan the phase diagram by scanning the beam energy; a coming upgrade will increase the luminosity and extend the rapidity acceptance of the STAR detector. In fireballs produced in RHIC collisions, the baryon density depends on rapidity. By employing Ising universality together with a phenomenologically motivated freezeout prescription, we show that the resulting rapidity dependence of cumulant observables sensitive to critical fluctuations is distinctive. The dependence of the kurtosis (of the event-by-event distribution of the number of protons) on rapidity near mid-rapidity will change qualitatively if a critical point is passed in the scan. Hence, measuring the rapidity dependence of cumulant observables can enhance the prospect of discovering a critical point, in particular if it lies between two energies in the beam energy scan.

The experimental realization of high-fidelity `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' quantum gates in a superconducting Xmon qubit

Based on a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) scheme, we theoretically design and experimentally realize a set of high-fidelity single-qubit quantum gates in a superconducting Xmon qubit system. Through a precise microwave control, the qubit is driven to follow a fast `adiabatic' trajectory with the assistance of a counter-diabatic field and the correction of derivative removal by adiabatic gates. The experimental measurements of quantum process tomography and interleaved randomized benchmarking show that the process fidelities of our STA quantum gates are higher than 94.9% and the gate fidelities are higher than 99.8%, very close to the state-of-art gate fidelity of 99.9%. An alternate of high-fidelity quantum gates is successfully achieved under the STA protocol.

Electronic effect of doped oxygen atoms in Bi2201 superconductors determined by scanning tunneling microscopy

The oxygen dopants are essential in tuning electronic properties of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+4+δ}$ superconductors. Here we apply the technique of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the influence of oxygen dopants in an optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and an overdoped Bi$_{2-y}$Pb$_y$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$. In both samples, we find that interstitial oxygen atoms on the SrO layers dominate over the other two forms of oxygen dopants, oxygen vacancies on the SrO layers and interstitial oxygen atoms on the BiO layers. The hole doping is estimated from the oxygen concentration, as compared to the result extracted from the measured Fermi surface. The precise spatial location is employed to obtain a negative correlation between the oxygen dopants and the inhomogeneous pseudogap.

The study of electronic nematicity in an overdoped (Bi, Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ superconductor using scanning tunneling spectroscopy

The pseudogap (PG) state and its related intra-unit-cell symmetry breaking remain the focus in the research of cuprate superconductors. Although the nematicity has been studied in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, especially underdoped samples, its behavior in other cuprates and different doping regions is still unclear. Here we apply a scanning tunneling microscope to explore an overdoped (Bi, Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with a large Fermi surface (FS). The establishment of a nematic order and its real-space distribution is visualized as the energy scale approaches the PG.

Visualization of electronic topology in ZrSiSe by scanning tunneling microscopy

As emerging topological nodal-line semimetals, the family of ZrSiX (X = O, S, Se, Te) has attracted broad interests in condensed matter physics due to their future applications in spintonics. Here, we apply a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study the structural symmetry and electronic topology of ZrSiSe. The glide mirror symmetry is verified by quantifying the lattice structure of the ZrSe bilayer based on bias selective topographies. The quasiparticle interference analysis is used to identify the band structure of ZrSiSe. The nodal line is experimentally determined at $\sim$ 250 meV above the Fermi level. An extra surface state Dirac point at $\sim$ 400 meV below the Fermi level is also determined. Our STM measurement provides a direct experimental evidence of the nodal-line state in the family of ZrSiX.

Simulating a Topological Transition in a Superconducting Phase Qubit by Fast Adiabatic Trajectories

The significance of topological phases has been widely recognized in the community of condensed matter physics. The well controllable quantum systems provide an artificial platform to probe and engineer various topological phases. The adiabatic trajectory of a quantum state describes the change of the bulk Bloch eigenstates with the momentum, and this adiabatic simulation method is however practically limited due to quantum dissipation. Here we apply the `shortcut to adiabaticity' (STA) protocol to realize fast adiabatic evolutions in the system of a superconducting phase qubit. The resulting fast adiabatic trajectories illustrate the change of the bulk Bloch eigenstates in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. A sharp transition is experimentally determined for the topological invariant of a winding number. Our experiment helps identify the topological Chern number of a two-dimensional toy model, suggesting the applicability of the fast adiabatic simulation method for topological systems.

Quantifying Chiral Magnetic Effect from Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics

The Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is a macroscopic manifestation of fundamental chiral anomaly in a many-body system of chiral fermions, and emerges as anomalous transport current in the fluid dynamics framework. Experimental observation of CME is of great interest and has been reported in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Significant efforts have also been made to look for CME in heavy ion collisions. Critically needed for such search, is the theoretical prediction for CME signal. In this paper we report a first quantitative modeling framework, the Anomalous Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD), which computes the evolution of fermion currents on top of realistic bulk evolution in heavy ion collisions and simultaneously accounts for both anomalous and normal viscous transport effects. The AVFD allows a quantitative understanding of the generation and evolution of CME-induced charge separation during hydrodynamic stage as well as its dependence on theoretical ingredients. With reasonable estimates of key parameters, the AVFD simulations provide the first phenomenologically successful explanation of the measured signal in 200AGeV AuAu collisions.

New quantum effects in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics

Chiral anomaly induces a new kind of macroscopic quantum behavior in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, including the chiral magnetic effect. In this talk we present two new quantum effects present in fluids that contain charged chiral fermions: 1) the turbulent inverse cascade driven by the chiral anomaly; 2) quantized chiral magnetic current induced by the reconnections of magnetic flux. We also discuss the implications for the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions.

Charge redistribution from novel magneto-vorticity coupling in anomalous hydrodynamics

We discuss new transport phenomena in the presence of both a strong magnetic field and a vortex field. Their interplay induces a charge distribution and a current along the magnetic field. We show that the associated transport coefficients can be obtained from a simple analysis of the single-particle distribution functions and also from the Kubo formula calculation. The consistent results from these analyses suggest that the transport coefficients are tied to the chiral anomaly in the (1+1) dimension because of the dimensional reduction in the lowest Landau levels.

Universality regained: Kibble-Zurek dynamics, off-equilibrium scaling and the search for the QCD critical point

We generalize and apply the key elements of the Kibble-Zurek framework of nonequilibrium phase transitions to study the non-equilibrium critical cumulants near the QCD critical point. We demonstrate the off-equilibrium critical cumulants are expressible as universal scaling functions. We discuss how to use off-equilibrium scaling to provide powerful model-independent guidance in searches for the QCD critical point.

Quantifying the Chiral Magnetic Effect from Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics

In this contribution we report a recently developed Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) framework, which simulates the evolution of fermion currents in QGP on top of the bulk expansion from data-validated VISHNU hydrodynamics. With reasonable estimates of initial conditions and magnetic field lifetime, the predicted CME signal is quantitatively consistent with change separation measurements in 200GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. We further develop the event-by-event AVFD simulations that allow direct evaluation of two-particle correlations arising from CME signal as well as the non-CME backgrounds. Finally we report predictions from AVFD simulations for the upcoming isobaric (Ru-Ru v.s. Zr-Zr ) collisions that could provide the critical test of the CME in heavy ion collisions.

Effects of enhanced bulk viscosity near the QCD critical point

Search for the conjectured QCD critical point is one of the major scientific goals for the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The growth of the correlation length is a universal feature for systems near criticality, and bulk viscosity exhibits the strongest dependence on the correlation length. We investigate its effects using a relativistic hydrodynamic model to find that rapidity distributions of charged particles and net baryon number are visibly modified if the fireball passes through the vicinity of the QCD critical point on the phase diagram. We also discuss how critical modification of dilepton emission rate may leave imprints on invariant mass spectra.

Measuring the Berry Phase in a Superconducting Phase Qubit by a Shortcut to Adiabaticity

With a counter-diabatic field supplemented to the reference control field, the `shortcut to adiabaticiy' (STA) protocol is implemented in a superconducting phase qubit. The Berry phase measured in a short time scale is in good agreement with the theoretical result acquired from an adiabatic loop. The trajectory of a qubit vector is extracted, verifying the Berry phase alternatively by the integrated solid angle. The classical noise is introduced to the amplitude or phase of the total control field. In the statistics of the Berry phase, the mean with either noise is almost equal to that without noise, while the variation with the amplitude noise can be described by an analytical expression.

Phenomenological Consequences of Enhanced Bulk Viscosity Near the QCD Critical Point

In the proximity of the QCD critical point the bulk viscosity of quark-gluon matter is expected to be proportional to nearly the third power of the critical correlation length, and become significantly enhanced. This work is the first attempt to study the phenomenological consequences of enhanced bulk viscosity near the QCD critical point. For this purpose, we implement the expected critical behavior of the bulk viscosity within a non-boost-invariant, longitudinally expanding $1+1$ dimensional causal relativistic hydrodynamical evolution at non-zero baryon density. We demonstrate that the critically-enhanced bulk viscosity induces a substantial non-equilibrium pressure, effectively softening the equation of state, and leads to sizable effects in the flow velocity and single particle distributions at the freeze-out. The observable effects that may arise due to the enhanced bulk viscosity in the vicinity of the QCD critical point can be used as complimentary information to facilitate searches for the QCD critical point.

Universal off-equilibrium scaling of critical cumulants in the QCD phase diagram

Exploiting the universality between the QCD critical point and the three dimensional Ising model, closed form expressions derived (arXiv:1506.00645 ) for non-equilibrium critical cumulants on the crossover side of the critical point reveal that they can differ both in magnitude and sign from equilibrium expectations. We demonstrate here that key elements of the Kibble-Zurek framework of non-equilibrium phase transitions can be employed to describe the dynamics of these critical cumulants. Our results suggest that observables sensitive to critical dynamics in heavy-ion collisions should be expressible as universal scaling functions, thereby providing powerful model independent guidance in searches for the QCD critical point.

Heavy-Quark Diffusion Dynamics in Quark-Gluon Plasma under Strong Magnetic Fields

We discuss heavy-quark dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma under a strong magnetic field induced by colliding nuclei. By the use of the diagrammatic resummation techniques for Hard Thermal Loop and the external magnetic field, we show analytic results of heavy-quark diffusion coefficient and drag force which become anisotropic due to the preferred spatial orientation in the magnetic field. We argue that the anisotropic diffusion coefficient gives rise to an enhancement/suppression of the heavy-quark elliptic flow depending on the transverse momentum.
