Debiasing Backdoor Attack: A Benign Application of Backdoor Attack in Eliminating Data Bias

Backdoor attack is a new AI security risk that has emerged in recent years. Drawing on the previous research of adversarial attack, we argue that the backdoor attack has the potential to tap into the model learning process and improve model performance. Based on Clean Accuracy Drop (CAD) in backdoor attack, we found that CAD came out of the effect of pseudo-deletion of data. We provided a preliminary explanation of this phenomenon from the perspective of model classification boundaries and observed that this pseudo-deletion had advantages over direct deletion in the data debiasing problem. Based on the above findings, we proposed Debiasing Backdoor Attack (DBA). It achieves SOTA in the debiasing task and has a broader application scenario than undersampling.

The ratio $\mathcal{R}(D_s)$ for $B_s \to D_s \ellν_\ell$ by using the QCD light-cone sum rules within the framework of heavy quark effective field theory

In the paper, we study the $B_s\to D_s$ transition form factors by using the light-cone sum rules within the framework of heavy quark effective field theory. We adopt a chiral current correlation function to do the calculation, the resultant transition form factors $f_+^{B_s\to D_s}(q^2)$ and $f_0^{B_s\to D_s}(q^2)$ are dominated by the contribution of $D_s$-meson leading-twist distribution amplitude, while the contributions from less certain $D_s$-meson twist-3 distribution amplitudes are greatly suppressed. At the largest recoil point, we obtain $f_{+,0}^{B_s \to D_s}(0)=0.533^{+0.112}_{-0.094}$. By further extrapolating the transition form factors into all the physically allowable $q^2$ region with the help of the $z$-series parametrization approach, we calculate the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s \ell^\prime ν_{\ell^\prime})$ with $(\ell^\prime= e,μ)$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s τν_τ)$, which gives $\mathcal{R}(D_s)=0.334\pm 0.017$.

Multi-armed Bandits for Link Configuration in Millimeter-wave Networks

Establishing and maintaining millimeter-wave (mmWave) links is challenging due to the changing environment and the high sensibility of mmWave signal to user mobility and channel conditions. MmWave link configuration problems often involve a search for optimal system parameter under environmental uncertainties, from a finite set of alternatives that are supported by the system hardware and protocol. For example, beam sweeping aims at identifying the optimal beam(s) for data transmission from a discrete codebook. Selecting parameters such as the beam sweeping period and the beamwidth are crucial to achieving high overall system throughput. In this article, we motivate the use of the multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework to intelligently search out the optimal configuration when establishing the mmWave links. MAB is a reinforcement learning framework that guides a decision-maker to sequentially select one action from a set of actions. As an example, we show that within the MAB framework, the optimal beam sweeping period, beamwidth, and beam directions could be dynamically learned with sample-computational-efficient bandit algorithms. We conclude by highlighting some future research directions on enhancing mmWave link configuration design with MAB.

One-Year In: COVID-19 Research at the International Level in CORD-19 Data

The appearance of a novel coronavirus in late 2019 radically changed the community of researchers working on coronaviruses since the 2002 SARS epidemic. In 2020, coronavirus-related publications grew by 20 times over the previous two years, with 130,000 more researchers publishing on related topics. The United States, the United Kingdom and China led dozens of nations working on coronavirus prior to the pandemic, but leadership consolidated among these three nations in 2020, which collectively accounted for 50% of all papers, garnering well more than 60% of citations. China took an early lead on COVID-19 research, but dropped rapidly in production and international participation through the year. Europe showed an opposite pattern, beginning slowly in publications but growing in contributions during the year. The share of internationally collaborative publications dropped from pre-pandemic rates; single-authored publications grew. For all nations, including China, the number of publications about COVID track closely with the outbreak of COVID-19 cases. Lower-income nations participate very little in COVID-19 research in 2020. Topic maps of internationally collaborative work show the rise of patient care and public health clusters, two topics that were largely absent from coronavirus research in the two years prior to 2020. Findings are consistent with global science as a self-organizing system operating on a reputation-based dynamic.

Constraining the baryon loading factor of AGN jets: implication from the gamma-ray emission of the Coma cluster

High-energy cosmic rays (CRs) can be accelerated in the relativistic jets of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) powered by supermassive black holes. The baryon loading efficiency onto relativistic CR baryons from the accreting black holes is poorly constrained by observations so far. In this paper, we suggest that the $γ$-ray emission of galaxy clusters can be used to study the baryon loading factor of AGN jets, since CRs injected by AGN jets are completely confined in the galaxy clusters and sufficiently interact with intra-cluster medium via hadronic process, producing diffuse $γ$-rays. We study the propagation of CRs in the galaxy clusters and calculate the radial distribution of the gamma-rays in the galaxy cluster with different injection rates from AGNs. By comparison with the $γ$-ray flux and upper limits of the Coma cluster measured by $Fermi$-LAT and VERITAS, we find the upper limit of the average baryon loading factor {(defined as the efficiency with which the gravitational energy is converted into relativistic particles)} to be $η_{p, \mathrm{grav}} < 0.1$. The upper limit is much lower than that required to account for diffuse neutrino flux in the conventional blazar models.

Simulating COVID19 Transmission From Observed Movement: An Agent-Based Model of Classroom Dispersion

Current models of COVID-19 transmission predict infection from reported or assumed interactions. Here we leverage high-resolution observations of interaction to simulate infectious processes. Ultra-Wide Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems were employed to track the real-time physical movements and directional orientation of children and their teachers in 4 preschool classes over a total of 34 observations. An agent-based transmission model combined observed interaction patterns (individual distance and orientation) with CDC-published risk guidelines to estimate the transmission impact of an infected patient zero attending class on the proportion of overall infections, the average transmission rate, and the time lag to the appearance of symptomatic individuals. These metrics highlighted the prophylactic role of decreased classroom density and teacher vaccinations. Reduction of classroom density to half capacity was associated with an 18.2% drop in overall infection proportion while teacher vaccination receipt was associated with a 25.3%drop. Simulation results of classroom transmission dynamics may inform public policy in the face of COVID-19 and similar infectious threats.

Tailor Versatile Multi-modal Learning for Multi-label Emotion Recognition

Multi-modal Multi-label Emotion Recognition (MMER) aims to identify various human emotions from heterogeneous visual, audio and text modalities. Previous methods mainly focus on projecting multiple modalities into a common latent space and learning an identical representation for all labels, which neglects the diversity of each modality and fails to capture richer semantic information for each label from different perspectives. Besides, associated relationships of modalities and labels have not been fully exploited. In this paper, we propose versaTile multi-modAl learning for multI-labeL emOtion Recognition (TAILOR), aiming to refine multi-modal representations and enhance discriminative capacity of each label. Specifically, we design an adversarial multi-modal refinement module to sufficiently explore the commonality among different modalities and strengthen the diversity of each modality. To further exploit label-modal dependence, we devise a BERT-like cross-modal encoder to gradually fuse private and common modality representations in a granularity descent way, as well as a label-guided decoder to adaptively generate a tailored representation for each label with the guidance of label semantics. In addition, we conduct experiments on the benchmark MMER dataset CMU-MOSEI in both aligned and unaligned settings, which demonstrate the superiority of TAILOR over the state-of-the-arts. Code is available at https://github.com/kniter1/TAILOR.

NFANet: A Novel Method for Weakly Supervised Water Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Imagery

The use of deep learning for water extraction requires precise pixel-level labels. However, it is very difficult to label high-resolution remote sensing images at the pixel level. Therefore, we study how to utilize point labels to extract water bodies and propose a novel method called the neighbor feature aggregation network (NFANet). Compared with pixellevel labels, point labels are much easier to obtain, but they will lose much information. In this paper, we take advantage of the similarity between the adjacent pixels of a local water-body, and propose a neighbor sampler to resample remote sensing images. Then, the sampled images are sent to the network for feature aggregation. In addition, we use an improved recursive training algorithm to further improve the extraction accuracy, making the water boundary more natural. Furthermore, our method utilizes neighboring features instead of global or local features to learn more representative features. The experimental results show that the proposed NFANet method not only outperforms other studied weakly supervised approaches, but also obtains similar results as the state-of-the-art ones.

Ultra-Broadband Dispersion-Manipulated Dielectric Metalenses by Nonlinear Dispersive Phase Compensation

Dispersion decomposes compound light into monochromatic components at different spatial locations, which needs to be eliminated in imaging but utilized in spectral detection. Metasurfaces provide a unique path to modulate the dispersion only by adjusting the structural parameters without changing the material as required for refractive elements. However, the common linear phase compensation does not conform to the dispersion characteristics of the meta-unit limiting dispersion modulation in broader wavelength bands, which is desired for ultra-broadband or multiband imaging. Here, we propose a nonlinear dispersive phase compensation method to design polarization-insensitive achromatic metalenses from 400 nm to 1000 nm constructed with single-layer high aspect ratio nanostructures. This band matches the response spectrum of a typical CMOS sensor for both visible and near-infrared imaging applications without additional lens replacement. Moreover, the capability of the method in achieving arbitrary dispersion modulation is demonstrated for applications such as chromatography imaging and spectral detection.

SHD360: A Benchmark Dataset for Salient Human Detection in 360° Videos

Salient human detection (SHD) in dynamic 360° immersive videos is of great importance for various applications such as robotics, inter-human and human-object interaction in augmented reality. However, 360° video SHD has been seldom discussed in the computer vision community due to a lack of datasets with large-scale omnidirectional videos and rich annotations. To this end, we propose SHD360, the first 360° video SHD dataset which contains various real-life daily scenes. Since so far there is no method proposed for 360° image/video SHD, we systematically benchmark 11 representative state-of-the-art salient object detection (SOD) approaches on our SHD360, and explore key issues derived from extensive experimenting results. We hope our proposed dataset and benchmark could serve as a good starting point for advancing human-centric researches towards 360° panoramic data. The dataset is available at https://github.com/PanoAsh/SHD360.

Rail Vehicle Localization and Mapping with LiDAR-Vision-Inertial-GNSS Fusion

In this paper, we present a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) aided LiDAR-visual-inertial scheme, RailLoMer-V, for accurate and robust rail vehicle localization and mapping. RailLoMer-V is formulated atop a factor graph and consists of two subsystems: an odometer assisted LiDAR-inertial system (OLIS) and an odometer integrated Visual-inertial system (OVIS). Both the subsystem exploits the typical geometry structure on the railroads. The plane constraints from extracted rail tracks are used to complement the rotation and vertical errors in OLIS. Besides, the line features and vanishing points are leveraged to constrain rotation drifts in OVIS. The proposed framework is extensively evaluated on datasets over 800 km, gathered for more than a year on both general-speed and high-speed railways, day and night. Taking advantage of the tightly-coupled integration of all measurements from individual sensors, our framework is accurate to long-during tasks and robust enough to grievously degenerated scenarios (railway tunnels). In addition, the real-time performance can be achieved with an onboard computer.

CMA-Net: A Cascaded Mutual Attention Network for Light Field Salient Object Detection

In the past few years, numerous deep learning methods have been proposed to address the task of segmenting salient objects from RGB images. However, these approaches depending on single modality fail to achieve the state-of-the-art performance on widely used light field salient object detection (SOD) datasets, which collect large-scale natural images and provide multiple modalities such as multi-view, micro-lens images and depth maps. Most recently proposed light field SOD methods have acquired improving detecting accuracy, yet still predict rough objects' structures and perform slow inference speed. To this end, we propose CMA-Net, which consists of two novel cascaded mutual attention modules aiming at fusing the high level features from the modalities of all-in-focus and depth. Our proposed CMA-Net outperforms 30 SOD methods on two widely applied light field benchmark datasets. Besides, the proposed CMA-Net is able to inference at the speed of 53 fps. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments illustrate both the effectiveness and efficiency of our CMA-Net.

RailLoMer: Rail Vehicle Localization and Mapping with LiDAR-IMU-Odometer-GNSS Data Fusion

We present RailLoMer in this article, to achieve real-time accurate and robust odometry and mapping for rail vehicles. RailLoMer receives measurements from two LiDARs, an IMU, train odometer, and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. As frontend, the estimated motion from IMU/odometer preintegration de-skews the denoised point clouds and produces initial guess for frame-to-frame LiDAR odometry. As backend, a sliding window based factor graph is formulated to jointly optimize multi-modal information. In addition, we leverage the plane constraints from extracted rail tracks and the structure appearance descriptor to further improve the system robustness against repetitive structures. To ensure a globally-consistent and less blurry mapping result, we develop a two-stage mapping method that first performs scan-to-map in local scale, then utilizes the GNSS information to register the submaps. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on datasets gathered for a long time range over numerous scales and scenarios, and show that RailLoMer delivers decimeter-grade localization accuracy even in large or degenerated environments. We also integrate RailLoMer into an interactive train state and railway monitoring system prototype design, which has already been deployed to an experimental freight traffic railroad.

Uniqueness in determination of the fractional order in the TFDE using one measurement

This article deals with an inverse problem of identifying the fractional order in the 1D time fractional diffusion equation (TFDE in short) using the measurement at one space-time point. Based on the expression of the solution to the forward problem, the inverse problem is transformed to a nonlinear algebraic equation. By choosing suitable initial values and the measured point, the nonlinear equation has a unique solution by the monotonicity of the Mittag-Lellfer function. Theoretical testifications are presented to demonstrate the unique solvability of the inverse problem.

LDP-Net: An Unsupervised Pansharpening Network Based on Learnable Degradation Processes

Pansharpening in remote sensing image aims at acquiring a high-resolution multispectral (HRMS) image directly by fusing a low-resolution multispectral (LRMS) image with a panchromatic (PAN) image. The main concern is how to effectively combine the rich spectral information of LRMS image with the abundant spatial information of PAN image. Recently, many methods based on deep learning have been proposed for the pansharpening task. However, these methods usually has two main drawbacks: 1) requiring HRMS for supervised learning; and 2) simply ignoring the latent relation between the MS and PAN image and fusing them directly. To solve these problems, we propose a novel unsupervised network based on learnable degradation processes, dubbed as LDP-Net. A reblurring block and a graying block are designed to learn the corresponding degradation processes, respectively. In addition, a novel hybrid loss function is proposed to constrain both spatial and spectral consistency between the pansharpened image and the PAN and LRMS images at different resolutions. Experiments on Worldview2 and Worldview3 images demonstrate that our proposed LDP-Net can fuse PAN and LRMS images effectively without the help of HRMS samples, achieving promising performance in terms of both qualitative visual effects and quantitative metrics.

Nonlinear Multi-Objective Flux Balance Analysis of the Warburg Effect

Due to its implication in cancer treatment, the Warburg Effect has received extensive in silico investigation. Flux Balance Analysis (FBA), based on constrained optimization, was successfully applied in the Warburg Effect modelling. Yet, the assumption that cell types have one invariant cellular objective severely limits the applicability of the previous FBA models. Meanwhile, we note that cell types with different objectives show different extents of the Warburg Effect. To extend the applicability of the previous model and model the disparate cellular pathway preferences in different cell types, we built a Nonlinear Multi-Objective FBA (NLMOFBA) model by including three key objective terms (ATP production rate, lactate generation rate and ATP yield) into one objective function through linear scalarization. By constructing a cellular objective map and iteratively varying the objective weights, we showed disparate cellular pathway preferences manifested by different cell types driven by their unique cellular objectives, and we gained insights about the causal relationship between cellular objectives and the Warburg Effect. In addition, we obtained other biologically consistent results by using our NLMOFBA model. For example, augmented with the constraint associated with inefficient mitochondria function or limited substrate, NLMOFBA predicts cellular pathways supported by the biology literature. Collectively, NLMOFBA can help build a complete understanding towards the Warburg Effect in different cell types.

Dual camera snapshot hyperspectral imaging system via physics informed learning

We consider using the system's optical imaging process with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to solve the snapshot hyperspectral imaging reconstruction problem, which uses a dual-camera system to capture the three-dimensional hyperspectral images (HSIs) in a compressed way. Various methods using CNNs have been developed in recent years to reconstruct HSIs, but most of the supervised deep learning methods aimed to fit a brute-force mapping relationship between the captured compressed image and standard HSIs. Thus, the learned mapping would be invalid when the observation data deviate from the training data. Especially, we usually don't have ground truth in real-life scenarios. In this paper, we present a self-supervised dual-camera equipment with an untrained physics-informed CNNs framework. Extensive simulation and experimental results show that our method without training can be adapted to a wide imaging environment with good performance. Furthermore, compared with the training-based methods, our system can be constantly fine-tuned and self-improved in real-life scenarios.

Benefit of Joint DOA and Delay Estimation with Application to Indoor Localization in WiFi and 5G

Accurate indoor localization has long been a challenging problem due to the presence of multipath. Joint direction-of-arrival (DOA) and time delay (TD) estimation is a promising technique for accurate indoor Localization in next generation WiFi and 5G, as it has the capability of separating the line-of-sight (LOS) signal from multipath signals in the TD space. Although the benefit of joint DOA and TD estimation over DOA-only estimation has been empirically shown long ago, it has not been theoretically justified yet. In this paper, we provide a theoretical proof of the benefit of joint DOA and TD estimation over DOA-only estimation. Further, experimental results with simulated WiFi setting have been provided to demonstrate the theoretical finding. Matlab code is available at \textbf{https://github.com/FWen/JADE.git}.
