Gapless excitations inside the fully gapped kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$

The superconducting gap structures in the transition-metal-based kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K,Rb,Cs), the first family of quasi-two-dimensional kagome superconductors, remain elusive as there is strong experimental evidence for both nodal and nodaless gap structures. Here we show that the dichotomy can be resolved because of the coexistence of time-reversal symmetry breaking with a conventional fully gapped superconductivity. The symmetry protects the edge states which arise on the domains of the lattice symmetry breaking order to remain gapless in proximity to a conventional pairing. We demonstrate this result in a four-band tight-binding model using the V $d_{X^2-Y^2}$-like and the in-plane Sb $p_z$-like Wannier functions that can faithfully capture the main feature of the materials near the Fermi level.

Oblique and asymmetric Klein tunneling across smooth NP junctions or NPN junctions in 8-Pmmn borophene

The tunneling of electrons and holes in quantum structures plays a crucial role in studying the transport properties of materials and the related devices. 8-Pmmn borophene is a new two-dimensional Dirac material, which hosts tilted Dirac cone and chiral, anisotropic massless Dirac fermions. We develop the transfer matrix method to investigate the Klein tunneling of massless fermions across the smooth NP junctions and NPN junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene. Like the sharp NP junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene, the tilted Dirac cones induce the oblique Klein tunneling. The angle of perfect transmission to the normal incidence is 20.4 degrees, a constant determined by the Hamiltonian of 8-Pmmn borophene. For the NPN junction, there are branches of the Klein tunneling in the phase diagram. We find that the asymmetric Klein tunneling is induced by the chirality and anisotropy of the carriers. Furthermore, we show the oscillation of electrical resistance related to the Klein tunneling in the NPN junctions. One may analyze the pattern of electrical resistance and verify the existence of asymmetric Klein tunneling experimentally.

Multiscale Sparsifying Transform Learning for Image Denoising

The data-driven sparse methods such as synthesis dictionary learning (e.g., K-SVD) and sparsifying transform learning have been proven effective in image denoising. However, they are intrinsically single-scale which can lead to suboptimal results. We propose two methods developed based on wavelet subbands mixing to efficiently combine the merits of both single and multiscale methods. We show that an efficient multiscale method can be devised without the need for denoising detail subbands which substantially reduces the runtime. The proposed methods are initially derived within the framework of sparsifying transform learning denoising, and then, they are generalized to propose our multiscale extensions for the well-known K-SVD and SAIST image denoising methods. We analyze and assess the studied methods thoroughly and compare them with the well-known and state-of-the-art methods. The experiments show that our methods are able to offer good trade-offs between performance and complexity.

DR2L: Surfacing Corner Cases to Robustify Autonomous Driving via Domain Randomization Reinforcement Learning

How to explore corner cases as efficiently and thoroughly as possible has long been one of the top concerns in the context of deep reinforcement learning (DeepRL) autonomous driving. Training with simulated data is less costly and dangerous than utilizing real-world data, but the inconsistency of parameter distribution and the incorrect system modeling in simulators always lead to an inevitable Sim2real gap, which probably accounts for the underperformance in novel, anomalous and risky cases that simulators can hardly generate. Domain Randomization(DR) is a methodology that can bridge this gap with little or no real-world data. Consequently, in this research, an adversarial model is put forward to robustify DeepRL-based autonomous vehicles trained in simulation to gradually surfacing harder events, so that the models could readily transfer to the real world.

Operator forms of nonhomogeneous associative classical Yang-Baxter equation

This paper studies operator forms of the nonhomogeneous associative classical Yang-Baxter equation (nhacYBe), extending and generalizing such studies for the classical Yang-Baxter equation and associative Yang-Baxter equation that can be tracked back to the works of Semonov-Tian-Shansky and Kupershmidt on Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and $\mathcal{O}$-operators. In general, solutions of the nhacYBe are characterized in terms of generalized $\mathcal{O}$-operators. The characterization can be given by the classical $\mathcal{O}$-operators precisely when the solutions satisfy an invariant condition. When the invariant condition is compatible with a Frobenius algebra, such solutions have close relationships with Rota-Baxter operators on the Frobenius algebra. In general, solutions of the nhacYBe can be produced from Rota-Baxter operators, and then from $\mathcal{O}$-operators when the solutions are taken in semi-direct product algebras. In the other direction, Rota-Baxter operators can be obtained from solutions of the nhacYBe in unitizations of algebras. Finally a classifications of solutions of the nhacYBe satisfying the mentioned invariant condition in all unital complex algebras of dimensions two and three are obtained. All these solutions are shown to come from Rota-Baxter operators.

On Existence and Uniqueness of Formal Power Series Solutions of Algebraic Ordinary Differential Equations

Given an algebraic ordinary differential equation (AODE), we propose a computational method to determine when a truncated power series can be extended to a formal power series solution. If a certain regularity condition on the given AODE or on the initial values is fulfilled, we compute all of the solutions. Moreover, when the existence is confirmed, we present the algebraic structure of the set of all formal power series solutions.

Hopf algebra of multi-decorated rooted forests, free matching Rota-Baxter algebras and Gröbner-Shirshov bases

Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to allow multiple Rota-Baxter operators. Finally the free matching Rota-Baxter algebras are equipped with a cocycle Hopf algebra structure.

Dizygotic Conditional Variational AutoEncoder for Multi-Modal and Partial Modality Absent Few-Shot Learning

Data augmentation is a powerful technique for improving the performance of the few-shot classification task. It generates more samples as supplements, and then this task can be transformed into a common supervised learning issue for solution. However, most mainstream data augmentation based approaches only consider the single modality information, which leads to the low diversity and quality of generated features. In this paper, we present a novel multi-modal data augmentation approach named Dizygotic Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (DCVAE) for addressing the aforementioned issue. DCVAE conducts feature synthesis via pairing two Conditional Variational AutoEncoders (CVAEs) with the same seed but different modality conditions in a dizygotic symbiosis manner. Subsequently, the generated features of two CVAEs are adaptively combined to yield the final feature, which can be converted back into its paired conditions while ensuring these conditions are consistent with the original conditions not only in representation but also in function. DCVAE essentially provides a new idea of data augmentation in various multi-modal scenarios by exploiting the complement of different modality prior information. Extensive experimental results demonstrate our work achieves state-of-the-art performances on miniImageNet, CIFAR-FS and CUB datasets, and is able to work well in the partial modality absence case.

Novelty Detection via Contrastive Learning with Negative Data Augmentation

Novelty detection is the process of determining whether a query example differs from the learned training distribution. Previous methods attempt to learn the representation of the normal samples via generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, they will suffer from instability training, mode dropping, and low discriminative ability. Recently, various pretext tasks (e.g. rotation prediction and clustering) have been proposed for self-supervised learning in novelty detection. However, the learned latent features are still low discriminative. We overcome such problems by introducing a novel decoder-encoder framework. Firstly, a generative network (a.k.a. decoder) learns the representation by mapping the initialized latent vector to an image. In particular, this vector is initialized by considering the entire distribution of training data to avoid the problem of mode-dropping. Secondly, a contrastive network (a.k.a. encoder) aims to ``learn to compare'' through mutual information estimation, which directly helps the generative network to obtain a more discriminative representation by using a negative data augmentation strategy. Extensive experiments show that our model has significant superiority over cutting-edge novelty detectors and achieves new state-of-the-art results on some novelty detection benchmarks, e.g. CIFAR10 and DCASE. Moreover, our model is more stable for training in a non-adversarial manner, compared to other adversarial based novelty detection methods.

Momentum space quantum Monte Carlo on twisted bilayer Graphene

We report an implementation of the momentum space quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method on the interaction model for the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at integer fillings. The long-range Coulomb repulsion is treated exactly with the flat bands, spin and valley degrees of freedom of electrons taking into account. We prove the absence of the minus sign problem for QMC simulation at integer fillings when either the two valley or the two spin degrees of freedom are considered. By taking the realistic parameters of the twist angle and interlayer tunnelings into the simulation, we benchmark the QMC data with the exact band gap obtained at the chiral limit, to reveal the insulating ground states at the charge neutrality point (CNP). Then, with the exact Green's functions from QMC, we perform stochastic analytic continuation to obtain the first set of single-particle spectral function for the TBG model at CNP. Our momentum space QMC scheme therefore offers the controlled computation pathway for systematic investigation of the electronic states in realistic TBG model at various electron fillings.

Salient Object Ranking with Position-Preserved Attention

Instance segmentation can detect where the objects are in an image, but hard to understand the relationship between them. We pay attention to a typical relationship, relative saliency. A closely related task, salient object detection, predicts a binary map highlighting a visually salient region while hard to distinguish multiple objects. Directly combining two tasks by post-processing also leads to poor performance. There is a lack of research on relative saliency at present, limiting the practical applications such as content-aware image cropping, video summary, and image labeling. In this paper, we study the Salient Object Ranking (SOR) task, which manages to assign a ranking order of each detected object according to its visual saliency. We propose the first end-to-end framework of the SOR task and solve it in a multi-task learning fashion. The framework handles instance segmentation and salient object ranking simultaneously. In this framework, the SOR branch is independent and flexible to cooperate with different detection methods, so that easy to use as a plugin. We also introduce a Position-Preserved Attention (PPA) module tailored for the SOR branch. It consists of the position embedding stage and feature interaction stage. Considering the importance of position in saliency comparison, we preserve absolute coordinates of objects in ROI pooling operation and then fuse positional information with semantic features in the first stage. In the feature interaction stage, we apply the attention mechanism to obtain proposals' contextualized representations to predict their relative ranking orders. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the ASR dataset. Without bells and whistles, our proposed method outperforms the former state-of-the-art method significantly. The code will be released publicly available.

Visual Question Rewriting for Increasing Response Rate

When a human asks questions online, or when a conversational virtual agent asks human questions, questions triggering emotions or with details might more likely to get responses or answers. we explore how to automatically rewrite natural language questions to improve the response rate from people. In particular, a new task of Visual Question Rewriting(VQR) task is introduced to explore how visual information can be used to improve the new questions. A data set containing around 4K bland questions, attractive questions and images triples is collected. We developed some baseline sequence to sequence models and more advanced transformer based models, which take a bland question and a related image as input and output a rewritten question that is expected to be more attractive. Offline experiments and mechanical Turk based evaluations show that it is possible to rewrite bland questions in a more detailed and attractive way to increase the response rate, and images can be helpful.

Alleviating the Knowledge-Language Inconsistency: A Study for Deep Commonsense Knowledge

Knowledge facts are typically represented by relational triples, while we observe that some commonsense facts are represented by the triples whose forms are inconsistent with the expression of language. This inconsistency puts forward a challenge for pre-trained language models to deal with these commonsense knowledge facts. In this paper, we term such knowledge as deep commonsense knowledge and conduct extensive exploratory experiments on it. We show that deep commonsense knowledge occupies a significant part of commonsense knowledge while conventional methods fail to capture it effectively. We further propose a novel method to mine the deep commonsense knowledge distributed in sentences, alleviating the reliance of conventional methods on the triple representation form of knowledge. Experiments demonstrate that the proposal significantly improves the performance in mining deep commonsense knowledge.

Multi-turn Dialog System on Single-turn Data in Medical Domain

Recently there has been a huge interest in dialog systems. This interest has also been developed in the field of the medical domain where researchers are focusing on building a dialog system in the medical domain. This research is focused on the multi-turn dialog system trained on the multi-turn dialog data. It is difficult to gather a huge amount of multi-turn conversational data in the medical domain that is verified by professionals and can be trusted. However, there are several frequently asked questions (FAQs) or single-turn QA pairs that have information that is verified by the experts and can be used to build a multi-turn dialog system.

Context-aware Cross-level Fusion Network for Camouflaged Object Detection

Camouflaged object detection (COD) is a challenging task due to the low boundary contrast between the object and its surroundings. In addition, the appearance of camouflaged objects varies significantly, e.g., object size and shape, aggravating the difficulties of accurate COD. In this paper, we propose a novel Context-aware Cross-level Fusion Network (C2F-Net) to address the challenging COD task. Specifically, we propose an Attention-induced Cross-level Fusion Module (ACFM) to integrate the multi-level features with informative attention coefficients. The fused features are then fed to the proposed Dual-branch Global Context Module (DGCM), which yields multi-scale feature representations for exploiting rich global context information. In C2F-Net, the two modules are conducted on high-level features using a cascaded manner. Extensive experiments on three widely used benchmark datasets demonstrate that our C2F-Net is an effective COD model and outperforms state-of-the-art models remarkably. Our code is publicly available at: https://github.com/thograce/C2FNet.

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $π^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

One Network to Solve Them All: A Sequential Multi-Task Joint Learning Network Framework for MR Imaging Pipeline

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition, reconstruction, and segmentation are usually processed independently in the conventional practice of MRI workflow. It is easy to notice that there are significant relevances among these tasks and this procedure artificially cuts off these potential connections, which may lead to losing clinically important information for the final diagnosis. To involve these potential relations for further performance improvement, a sequential multi-task joint learning network model is proposed to train a combined end-to-end pipeline in a differentiable way, aiming at exploring the mutual influence among those tasks simultaneously. Our design consists of three cascaded modules: 1) deep sampling pattern learning module optimizes the $k$-space sampling pattern with predetermined sampling rate; 2) deep reconstruction module is dedicated to reconstructing MR images from the undersampled data using the learned sampling pattern; 3) deep segmentation module encodes MR images reconstructed from the previous module to segment the interested tissues. The proposed model retrieves the latently interactive and cyclic relations among those tasks, from which each task will be mutually beneficial. The proposed framework is verified on MRB dataset, which achieves superior performance on other SOTA methods in terms of both reconstruction and segmentation.

Regression Bugs Are In Your Model! Measuring, Reducing and Analyzing Regressions In NLP Model Updates

Behavior of deep neural networks can be inconsistent between different versions. Regressions during model update are a common cause of concern that often over-weigh the benefits in accuracy or efficiency gain. This work focuses on quantifying, reducing and analyzing regression errors in the NLP model updates. Using negative flip rate as regression measure, we show that regression has a prevalent presence across tasks in the GLUE benchmark. We formulate the regression-free model updates into a constrained optimization problem, and further reduce it into a relaxed form which can be approximately optimized through knowledge distillation training method. We empirically analyze how model ensemble reduces regression. Finally, we conduct CheckList behavioral testing to understand the distribution of regressions across linguistic phenomena, and the efficacy of ensemble and distillation methods.
