Toward a Tractable Delay Analysis in Ultra-dense Networks

Meeting the diverse delay requirements of emerging wireless applications is one of the most critical goals for the design of ultradense networks. Though the delay of point-to-point communications has been well investigated using classical queueing theory, the delay of multi-point to multi-point communications, such as in ultradense networks, has not been explored in depth. The main technical difficulty lies in the interacting queues problem, in which the service rate is coupled with the statuses of other queues. In this article, we elaborate on the main challenges in the delay analysis in ultradense networks. Several promising approaches, such as introducing the dominant system and the simplified system, to bypass these difficulties are proposed and summarized to provide useful guidance.

Tradeoff between Delay and Physical Layer Security in Wireless Networks

Exchange of crucial and confidential information leads to the unprecedented attention on the security problem in wireless networks. Though the security has been studied in a number of works, the joint optimization of the physical layer security and the end-to-end delay management, which requires a meticulous cross-layer design, has seldom been evaluated. In this work, by combining the tools from stochastic geometry and queueing theory, we analyze the tradeoff between the delay and the security performance in large wireless networks. We further propose a simple transmission mechanism which splits a message into two packets and evaluate its effect on the mean delay and the secrecy outage probability. Our numerical results reveal that the security performance is better for larger path loss exponent when the density of legitimate nodes is large, and it is reverse when the density is small. Moreover, it is observed that by introducing the simple mechanism of message split, the security performance is greatly improved in the backlogged scenario and slightly improved in the dynamic scenario when the density of legitimate transmitters is large. In summary, this work provides an understanding and a rule-of-thumb for the practical design of wireless networks where both the delay and the security are key concerns.

Thick branes with inner structure in mimetic gravity

In this paper, thick branes generated by mimetic scalar field are investigated. Three typical thick brane models are constructed and the linear tensor and scalar perturbations are analyzed. These branes have different inner structures, some of which are absent in general relativity. For each brane model, the solution is stable under both tensor and scalar perturbations. The tensor zero modes are localized on the branes, while the scalar perturbations do not propagate and they are not localized on the brane. As the branes split into multi sub-branes for specific parameters, the potentials of the tensor perturbations also split into multi-wells, and this may lead to new phenomenon in the resonance of the tensor perturbation and the localization of matter fields.

Localization of Gravitino Field on Thin Branes

In this paper, we investigate the localization of a bulk gravitino field on the scalar-tensor branes and compare the result with that in the Randall-Sundrum-1 (RS1) model. The coupled chiral equations for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gravitino field are obtained by fixing the gauge $Ψ_5=0$ and using the chiral KK decompositions. It is shown that, in the RS1 model for the left- and right-handed zero modes of the gravitino field, only one of them can be localized near one brane. For the massive modes, both chiral modes survive and the lower KK modes are localized near the IR brane from the four-dimensional physical coordinate point of view. However, for the scalar-tensor brane model, the localization of the gravitino chiral zero modes depends on the coupling parameter $λ$, and they will be not localized around anyone brane within a certain range of the parameter $λ$, which is quite different from the RS1 model. Furthermore, we also give the corresponding mass spectra of the massive KK gravitinos in the scalar-tensor model.

5G Ultra-dense networks with non-uniform Distributed Users

User distribution in ultra-dense networks (UDNs) plays a crucial role in affecting the performance of UDNs due to the essential coupling between the traffic and the service provided by the networks. Existing studies are mostly based on the assumption that users are uniformly distributed in space. The non-uniform user distribution has not been widely considered despite that it is much closer to the real scenario. In this paper, Radiation and Absorbing model (R&A model) is first adopted to analyze the impact of the non-uniformly distributed users on the performance of 5G UDNs. Based on the R&A model and queueing network theory, the stationary user density in each hot area is investigated. Furthermore, the coverage probability, network throughput and energy efficiency are derived based on the proposed theoretical model. Compared with the uniformly distributed assumption, it is shown that non-uniform user distribution has a significant impact on the performance of UDNs.

Packet Throughput Analysis of Static and Dynamic TDD in Small Cell Networks

We develop an analytical framework for the perfor- mance comparison of small cell networks operating under static time division duplexing (S-TDD) and dynamic TDD (D-TDD). While in S-TDD downlink/uplink (DL/UL) cell transmissions are synchronized, in D-TDD each cell dynamically allocates resources to the most demanding direction. By leveraging stochastic geom- etry and queuing theory, we derive closed-form expressions for the UL and DL packet throughput, also capturing the impact of random traffic arrivals and packet retransmissions. Through our analysis, which is validated via simulations, we confirm that D-TDD outperforms S-TDD in DL, with the vice versa occurring in UL, since asymmetric transmissions reduce DL interference at the expense of an increased UL interference. We also find that in asymmetric scenarios, where most of the traffic is in DL, D-TDD provides a DL packet throughput gain by better controlling the queuing delay, and that such gain vanishes in the light-traffic regime.

Heterogeneous Cellular Networks with Spatio-Temporal Traffic: Delay Analysis and Scheduling

Emergence of new types of services has led to various traffic and diverse delay requirements in fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. Meeting diverse delay requirements is one of the most critical goals for the design of 5G wireless networks. Though the delay of point-to-point communications has been well investigated, the delay of multi-point to multi-point communications has not been thoroughly studied since it is a complicated function of all links in the network. In this work, we propose a novel tractable approach to analyze the delay in the heterogenous cellular networks with spatio-temporal random arrival of traffic. Specifically, we propose the notion of \emph{delay outage} and evaluated the effect of different scheduling policies on the delay performance. Our numerical analysis reveals that offloading policy based on cell range expansion greatly reduces the macrocell traffic while bringing a small amount of growth for the picocell traffic. Our results also show that the delay performance of round-robin scheduling outperforms first in first out scheduling for heavy traffic, and it is reversed for light traffic. In summary, this analytical framework provides an understanding and a rule-of-thumb for the practical deployment of 5G systems where delay requirement is increasingly becoming a key concern.

Power Control in Full Duplex Networks: Area Spectrum Efficiency and Energy Efficency

Full-duplex (FD) allows the exchange of data between nodes on the same temporal and spectrum resources, however, it introduces self interference (SI) and additional network interference compared to half-duplex (HD). Power control in the FD networks, which is seldom studied in the literature, is promising to mitigate the interference and improve the performance of the overall network. In this work, we investigate the random and deterministic power control strategies in the FD networks, namely, constant power control, uniform power control, fractional power control and ALOHA-like random on-off power control scheme. Based on the obtained coverage probabilities and their robust approximations, we show that power control provides remarkable gain in area spectrum efficiency (ASE) and energy efficiency (EE), and improves the fairness among the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmissions with respect to the FD networks. Moreover, we evaluate the minimum SI cancellation capability to guarantee the performance of the cell-edge users in FD networks. Generally, power control is helpful to improve the performance of the transmission for long distance in the FD networks and reduce the requirement of SI cancellation capability.

De Sitter and power-law solutions in some models of modified gravity

Inspired by some recent works of Lovelock Brans-Dicke gravity and mimetic gravity, cosmology solutions in extensions of these two modified gravities are investigated. A non-local term is added to the Lovelock Brans-Dicke action and Gauss-Bonnet terms to the mimetic action, correspondingly. De Sitter and power scale factor solutions are then obtained in both theories. They can provide natural new approaches to a more accurate description of the unverse evolution.

Time-Dependent Scalar Fields in Modified Gravities in a Stationary Spacetime

Most no-hair theorems involve the assumption that the scalar field is independent of time. Recently in [Phys. Rev. D90 (2014) 041501(R)] the existence of time-dependent scalar hair outside a stationary black hole in general relativity was ruled out. We generalize this work to modified gravities and non-minimally coupled scalar field with an additional assumption that the spacetime is axisymmetric. It is shown that in higher-order gravity such as metric $f(R)$ gravity the time-dependent scalar hair doesn't exist. While in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity and non-minimally coupled case the time-dependent scalar hair may exist.

Normal heat conduction in lattice models with asymmetry harmonic interparticle interactions

We study the thermal conduction behaviors of one-dimensional lattice models with asymmetry harmonic interparticle interactions in this paper. Normal thermal conductivity independent of the system size is observed when the lattice chains are long enough. Because only the harmonic interactions are involved, the result confirms without ambiguous interpretation that the asymmetry plays key role in resulting in the normal thermal conduction in one-dimensional momentum conserving lattices. Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium simulations are performed to support the conclusion.

Shadow of noncommutative geometry inspired black hole

In this paper, the shadow casted by the rotating black hole inspired by noncommutative geometry is investigated. In addition to the dimensionless spin parameter $a/M_{0}$ with $M_{0}$ black hole mass and inclination angle $i$, the dimensionless noncommutative parameter $\sqrt{\vartheta}/M_{0}$ is also found to affect the shape of the black hole shadow. The result shows that the size of the shadow slightly decreases with the parameter $\sqrt{\vartheta}/M_{0}$, while the distortion increases with it. Compared to the Kerr black hole, the parameter $\sqrt{\vartheta}/M_{0}$ increases the deformation of the shadow. This may offer a way to distinguish noncommutative geometry inspired black hole from Kerr one via astronomical instruments in the near future.

Localization and mass spectra of various matter fields on scalar-tensor brane

Recently, a new scalar-tensor braneworld model was presented in [Phys. Rev. \textbf{D 86} (2012) 127502]. It not only solves the gauge hierarchy problem but also reproduces a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. In this new model, there are two different brane solutions, for which the mass spectra of gravity on the brane are the same. In this paper, we investigate localization and mass spectra of various bulk matter fields (i.e., scalar, vector, Kalb-Ramond, and fermion fields) on the brane. It is shown that the zero modes of all the matter fields can be localized on the positive tension brane under some conditions, and the mass spectra of each kind of bulk matter field for the two brane solutions are different, which implies that the two brane solutions are not physically equivalent.

Warped Brane worlds in Critical Gravity

We investigate the brane models in arbitrary dimensional critical gravity presented in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 181302 (2011)]. For the model of the thin branes with codimension one, the Gibbons-Hawking surface term and the junction conditions are derived, with which the analytical solutions for the flat, AdS, and dS branes are obtained at the critical point of the critical gravity. It is found that all these branes are embedded in an AdS$_{n}$ spacetime, but, in general, the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ of the AdS$_{n}$ spacetime is not equal to the naked one $Λ_0$ in the critical gravity, which can be positive, zero, and negative. Another interesting result is that the brane tension can also be positive, zero, or negative, depending on the symmetry of the thin brane and the values of the parameters of the theory, which is very different from the case in general relativity. It is shown that the mass hierarchy problem can be solved in the braneworld model in the higher-derivative critical gravity. We also study the thick brane model and find analytical and numerical solutions of the flat, AdS, and dS branes. It is find that some branes will have inner structure when some parameters of the theory are larger than their critical values, which may result in resonant KK modes for some bulk matter fields. The flat branes with positive energy density and AdS branes with negative energy density are embedded in an $n$-dimensional AdS spacetime, while the dS branes with positive energy density are embedded in an $n$-dimensional Minkowski one.

Managing Interference Correlation Through Random Medium Access

The capacity of wireless networks is fundamentally limited by interference. However, little research has focused on the interference correlation, which may greatly increase the local delay (namely the number of time slots required for a node to successfully transmit a packet). This paper focuses on the question that whether increasing randomness in the MAC, such as frequency-hopping multiple access (FHMA) and ALOHA, helps to reduce the effect of interference correlation. We derive closed-form results for the mean and variance of the local delay for the two MAC protocols and evaluate the optimal parameters that minimize the mean local delay. Based on the optimal parameters, we propose the definitions of two operation regimes: correlation-limited regime and bandwidth-limited regime. Our results reveal that while the mean local delays for FHMA with N sub-bands and for ALOHA with transmit probability p are the same when p=1/N with thermal noise ignored, significant difference exists between the variances. At last, we evaluate the mean delay-jitter tradeoff and the bounds on the tail probability of the local delay, which shed key insights into the system design.

Multi-channel Hybrid Access Femtocells: A Stochastic Geometric Analysis

For two-tier networks consisting of macrocells and femtocells, the channel access mechanism can be configured to be open access, closed access, or hybrid access. Hybrid access arises as a compromise between open and closed access mechanisms, in which a fraction of available spectrum resource is shared to nonsubscribers while the remaining reserved for subscribers. This paper focuses on a hybrid access mechanism for multi-channel femtocells which employ orthogonal spectrum access schemes. Considering a randomized channel assignment strategy, we analyze the performance in the downlink. Using stochastic geometry as technical tools, we model the distribution of femtocells as Poisson point process or Neyman-Scott cluster process and derive the distributions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios, and mean achievable rates, of both nonsubscribers and subscribers. The established expressions are amenable to numerical evaluation, and shed key insights into the performance tradeoff between subscribers and nonsubscribers. The analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations.

Resonances of Kalb-Ramond field on symmetric and asymmetric thick branes

In this paper, we investigate the localization of the Kalb-Ramond field on symmetric and asymmetric thick branes, which are generated by a background scalar field. In order to localize the Kalb-Ramond field, we introduce a coupling with the background scalar field, and find that there exist some Kaluza-Klein resonant modes. For the case of symmetric brane, we seek the resonances by using the relative probability method and transfer matrix method, and obtain the same result for the two methods. For the asymmetric case, we use the transfer matrix method. We find that the number of resonances will decrease with the increase of the asymmetry.

Normal heat conduction in one dimensional momentum conserving lattices with asymmetric interactions

The heat conduction behavior of one dimensional momentum conserving lattice systems with asymmetric interparticle interactions is numerically investigated. It is found that with certain degree of interaction asymmetry, the heat conductivity measured in nonequilibrium stationary states converges in the thermodynamical limit, in clear contrast to the well accepted viewpoint that Fourier's law is generally violated in low dimensional momentum conserving systems. It suggests in nonequilibrium stationary states the mass gradient resulted from the asymmetric interactions may provide an additional phonon scattering mechanism other than that due to the nonlinear interactions.
