Majorana zero modes and long range edge correlation in interacting Kitaev chains: analytic solutions and density-matrix-renormalization-group study

We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system at zero chemical potential as well as in the symmetric case of Δ = t, and by using density-matrix-renormalizationgroup method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion interaction. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.

Towards Effective Exact Algorithms for the Maximum Balanced Biclique Problem

The Maximum Balanced Biclique Problem (MBBP) is a prominent model with numerous applications. Yet, the problem is NP-hard and thus computationally challenging. We propose novel ideas for designing effective exact algorithms for MBBP. Firstly, we introduce an Upper Bound Propagation procedure to pre-compute an upper bound involving each vertex. Then we extend an existing branch-and-bound algorithm by integrating the pre-computed upper bounds. We also present a set of new valid inequalities induced from the upper bounds to tighten an existing mathematical formulation for MBBP. Lastly, we investigate another exact algorithm scheme which enumerates a subset of balanced bicliques based on our upper bounds. Experiments show that compared to existing approaches, the proposed algorithms and formulations are more efficient in solving a set of random graphs and large real-life instances.

Combining tabu search and graph reduction to solve the maximum balanced biclique problem

The Maximum Balanced Biclique Problem is a well-known graph model with relevant applications in diverse domains. This paper introduces a novel algorithm, which combines an effective constraint-based tabu search procedure and two dedicated graph reduction techniques. We verify the effectiveness of the algorithm on 30 classical random benchmark graphs and 25 very large real-life sparse graphs from the popular Koblenz Network Collection (KONECT). The results show that the algorithm improves the best-known results (new lower bounds) for 10 classical benchmarks and obtains the optimal solutions for 14 KONECT instances.

Convergence Analysis of Proximal Gradient with Momentum for Nonconvex Optimization

In many modern machine learning applications, structures of underlying mathematical models often yield nonconvex optimization problems. Due to the intractability of nonconvexity, there is a rising need to develop efficient methods for solving general nonconvex problems with certain performance guarantee. In this work, we investigate the accelerated proximal gradient method for nonconvex programming (APGnc). The method compares between a usual proximal gradient step and a linear extrapolation step, and accepts the one that has a lower function value to achieve a monotonic decrease. In specific, under a general nonsmooth and nonconvex setting, we provide a rigorous argument to show that the limit points of the sequence generated by APGnc are critical points of the objective function. Then, by exploiting the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz (\KL) property for a broad class of functions, we establish the linear and sub-linear convergence rates of the function value sequence generated by APGnc. We further propose a stochastic variance reduced APGnc (SVRG-APGnc), and establish its linear convergence under a special case of the \KL property. We also extend the analysis to the inexact version of these methods and develop an adaptive momentum strategy that improves the numerical performance.

From First-Order Logic to Assertional Logic

First-Order Logic (FOL) is widely regarded as one of the most important foundations for knowledge representation. Nevertheless, in this paper, we argue that FOL has several critical issues for this purpose. Instead, we propose an alternative called assertional logic, in which all syntactic objects are categorized as set theoretic constructs including individuals, concepts and operators, and all kinds of knowledge are formalized by equality assertions. We first present a primitive form of assertional logic that uses minimal assumed knowledge and constructs. Then, we show how to extend it by definitions, which are special kinds of knowledge, i.e., assertions. We argue that assertional logic, although simpler, is more expressive and extensible than FOL. As a case study, we show how assertional logic can be used to unify logic and probability, and more building blocks in AI.

Structured Production System (extended abstract)

In this extended abstract, we propose Structured Production Systems (SPS), which extend traditional production systems with well-formed syntactic structures. Due to the richness of structures, structured production systems significantly enhance the expressive power as well as the flexibility of production systems, for instance, to handle uncertainty. We show that different rule application strategies can be reduced into the basic one by utilizing structures. Also, many fundamental approaches in computer science, including automata, grammar and logic, can be captured by structured production systems.

Quantum Spin Liquid States

This article is an introductory review of the physics of quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. Quantum magnetism is a rapidly evolving field, and recent developments reveal that the ground states and low-energy physics of frustrated spin systems may develop many exotic behaviors once we leave the regime of semi-classical approaches. The purpose of this article is to introduce these developments. The article begins by explaining how semi-classical approaches fail once quantum mechanics become important and then describes the alternative approaches for addressing the problem. We discuss mainly spin $1/2$ systems, and we spend most of our time in this article on one particular set of plausible spin liquid states in which spins are represented by fermions. These states are spin-singlet states and may be viewed as an extension of Fermi liquid states to Mott insulators, and they are usually classified in the category of so-called $SU(2)$, $U(1)$ or $Z_2$ spin liquid states. We review the basic theory regarding these states and the extensions of these states to include the effect of spin-orbit coupling and to higher spin ($S>1/2$) systems. Two other important approaches with strong influences on the understanding of spin liquid states are also introduced: (i) matrix product states and projected entangled pair states and (ii) the Kitaev honeycomb model. Experimental progress concerning spin liquid states in realistic materials, including anisotropic triangular lattice systems ($κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$ and EtMe$_{3}$Sb[(Pd(dmit)$_{2}$]$_{2}$), kagome lattice systems (ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$) and hyperkagome lattice systems (Na$_{4}$Ir$_{3}$O$_{8}$), is reviewed and compared against the corresponding theories.

Distributed Proximal Gradient Algorithm for Partially Asynchronous Computer Clusters

With ever growing data volume and model size, an error-tolerant, communication efficient, yet versatile distributed algorithm has become vital for the success of many large-scale machine learning applications. In this work we propose m-PAPG, an implementation of the flexible proximal gradient algorithm in model parallel systems equipped with the partially asynchronous communication protocol. The worker machines communicate asynchronously with a controlled staleness bound $s$ and operate at different frequencies. We characterize various convergence properties of m-PAPG: 1) Under a general non-smooth and non-convex setting, we prove that every limit point of the sequence generated by m-PAPG is a critical point of the objective function; 2) Under an error bound condition, we prove that the function value decays linearly for every $s$ steps; 3) Under the Kurdyka-$Ł$ojasiewicz inequality, we prove that the sequences generated by m-PAPG converge to the same critical point, provided that a proximal Lipschitz condition is satisfied.

Exact Solution to Interacting Kitaev Chain at Symmetric Point

Kitaev chain model with nearest neighbor interaction U is solved exactly at the symmetry point $Δ=t$ and chemical potential $μ=0$ in open boundary condition. By applying two Jordan-Wigner transformations and a spin-rotation, such a symmetric interacting model is mapped to a non-interacting fermion model, which can be diagonalized exactly. The solutions include topologically non-trivial phase at $|U| t$. The two phases are related by dualities. Quantum phase transitions in the model are studied with the help of the exact solution.

Theory for superconductivity in alkali chromium arsenides A2Cr3As3 (A=K,Rb,Cs)

We propose an extended Hubbard model with three molecular orbitals on a hexagonal lattice with $D_{3h}$ symmetry to study recently discovered superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K,Rb,Cs). Effective pairing interactions from paramagnon fluctuations are derived within the random phase approximation, and are found to be most attractive in spin triplet channels. At small Hubbard $U$ and moderate Hund's coupling, the pairing arises from 3-dimensional (3D) $γ$ band and has a spatial symmetry $f_{y(3x^{2}-y^{2})}$, which gives line nodes in the gap function. At large $U$, a fully gapped $p$-wave state, $p_{z}\hat{z}$ dominates at the quasi-1D $α$-band.

Topological Charge/spin density Wave in InAs/GaSb Quantum Wells under an In-plane Magnetic Field

We study interaction effect of quantum spin Hall state in InAs/GaSb quantum wells under an in-plane magnetic field by using the self-consistent mean field theory. We construct a phase diagram as a function of intra-layer and inter-layer interactions, and identify two novel phases, a charge/spin density wave phase and an exciton condensate phase. The charge/spin density wave phase is topologically non-trivial with helical edge transport at the boundary, while the exciton condensate phase is topologically trivial. The Zeeman effect is strongly renormalized due to interaction in certain parameter regimes of the system, leading to a much smaller g-factor, which may stabilize the helical edge transport.

Semi-Dense Visual Odometry for RGB-D Cameras Using Approximate Nearest Neighbour Fields

This paper presents a robust and efficient semi-dense visual odometry solution for RGB-D cameras. The core of our method is a 2D-3D ICP pipeline which estimates the pose of the sensor by registering the projection of a 3D semi-dense map of the reference frame with the 2D semi-dense region extracted in the current frame. The processing is speeded up by efficiently implemented approximate nearest neighbour fields under the Euclidean distance criterion, which permits the use of compact Gauss-Newton updates in the optimization. The registration is formulated as a maximum a posterior problem to deal with outliers and sensor noises, and consequently the equivalent weighted least squares problem is solved by iteratively reweighted least squares method. A variety of robust weight functions are tested and the optimum is determined based on the characteristics of the sensor model. Extensive evaluation on publicly available RGB-D datasets shows that the proposed method predominantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

Communication-Efficient Algorithms for Decentralized and Stochastic Optimization

We present a new class of decentralized first-order methods for nonsmooth and stochastic optimization problems defined over multiagent networks. Considering that communication is a major bottleneck in decentralized optimization, our main goal in this paper is to develop algorithmic frameworks which can significantly reduce the number of inter-node communications. We first propose a decentralized primal-dual method which can find an $ε$-solution both in terms of functional optimality gap and feasibility residual in $O(1/ε)$ inter-node communication rounds when the objective functions are convex and the local primal subproblems are solved exactly. Our major contribution is to present a new class of decentralized primal-dual type algorithms, namely the decentralized communication sliding (DCS) methods, which can skip the inter-node communications while agents solve the primal subproblems iteratively through linearizations of their local objective functions. By employing DCS, agents can still find an $ε$-solution in $O(1/ε)$ (resp., $O(1/\sqrtε)$) communication rounds for general convex functions (resp., strongly convex functions), while maintaining the $O(1/ε^2)$ (resp., $O(1/ε)$) bound on the total number of intra-node subgradient evaluations. We also present a stochastic counterpart for these algorithms, denoted by SDCS, for solving stochastic optimization problems whose objective function cannot be evaluated exactly. In comparison with existing results for decentralized nonsmooth and stochastic optimization, we can reduce the total number of inter-node communication rounds by orders of magnitude while still maintaining the optimal complexity bounds on intra-node stochastic subgradient evaluations. The bounds on the subgradient evaluations are actually comparable to those required for centralized nonsmooth and stochastic optimization.

Global classical solutions of 2D MHD system with only magnetic diffusion on periodic domain

This paper studies the global existence of classical solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) system with only magnetic diffusion on the periodic domain. The approach is based on a time-weighted energy estimate, under the assumptions that the initial magnetic field is close enough to an equilibrium state and the initial data have reflection symmetry.

Reshaped Wirtinger Flow and Incremental Algorithm for Solving Quadratic System of Equations

We study the phase retrieval problem, which solves quadratic system of equations, i.e., recovers a vector $\boldsymbol{x}\in \mathbb{R}^n$ from its magnitude measurements $y_i=|\langle \boldsymbol{a}_i, \boldsymbol{x}\rangle|, i=1,..., m$. We develop a gradient-like algorithm (referred to as RWF representing reshaped Wirtinger flow) by minimizing a nonconvex nonsmooth loss function. In comparison with existing nonconvex Wirtinger flow (WF) algorithm \cite{candes2015phase}, although the loss function becomes nonsmooth, it involves only the second power of variable and hence reduces the complexity. We show that for random Gaussian measurements, RWF enjoys geometric convergence to a global optimal point as long as the number $m$ of measurements is on the order of $n$, the dimension of the unknown $\boldsymbol{x}$. This improves the sample complexity of WF, and achieves the same sample complexity as truncated Wirtinger flow (TWF) \cite{chen2015solving}, but without truncation in gradient loop. Furthermore, RWF costs less computationally than WF, and runs faster numerically than both WF and TWF. We further develop the incremental (stochastic) reshaped Wirtinger flow (IRWF) and show that IRWF converges linearly to the true signal. We further establish performance guarantee of an existing Kaczmarz method for the phase retrieval problem based on its connection to IRWF. We also empirically demonstrate that IRWF outperforms existing ITWF algorithm (stochastic version of TWF) as well as other batch algorithms.

Instability of three-band Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid: renormalization group analysis and possible application to K2Cr3As3

Motivated by recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ with $D_{3h}$ lattice symmetry, we study one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model with generic electron repulsive interaction described by intra-orbital repulsion $U$, inter-orbital repulsion, and Hund's coupling $J$. As extracted from density functional theory calculation, two of the three atomic orbitals are degenerate ($E^{\prime}$ states) and the third one is non-degenerate ($A^{\prime}_1$), and the system is presumed to be at an incommensurate filling. With the help of bosonization, we have usual three-band Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the normal state. Possible charge density wave (CDW), spin density wave (SDW) and superconducting (SC) instabilities are analyzed by renormalization group. The ground state depends on the ratio $J/U$ and is sensitive to the degeneracy of $E^{\prime}$ bands. At $0 U/2$. When the two-fold degeneracy of $E^{\prime}$ bands is lifted, SDW instability has the tendency to dominate over the spin-singlet SC state at $0<J<U/3$, while the order parameter of the spin-triplet SC state will be modulated by a phase factor $2Δk_F x$ at $U/3<J<U/2$. Possible experimental consequences and applications to K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ are discussed.

Desiging Artificial Lieb Lattice on Metal Surface

Recently, several experiments have illustrated that metal surface electrons can be manipulated to form a two dimensional (2D) lattice by depositing a designer molecule lattice on metal surface. This offers a promising new technique to construct artificial 2D electron lattices. Here we theoretically propose a molecule lattice pattern to realize an artificial Lieb lattice on metal surface, which shows a flat electronic band due to the lattice geometry. We show that the localization of electrons in the flat band may be understood from the viewpoint of electron interference, which may be probed by measuring the local density of states with the scanning tunnelling microscopy. Our proposal may be readily implemented in experiment and may offer an ideal solid state platform to investigate the novel flat band physics of the Lieb lattice.
