BKM's Criterion and Global Weak Solutions for Magnetohydrodynamics with Zero Viscosity

In this paper we derive a criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda's breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids. In $\mathbb{R}^2$ we establish global weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity for initial data in Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$.

Topological glass states

In connection with recent discussion of topological order and topological phase transitions in quantum systems, we reexamine circumstances that lead to the appearance of a topological glass in certain classical lattice spin models. Local bonding enforces constraints on low energy states which organize themselves into topologically distinct classes that break ergodicity but not any apparent symmetry as in the usual Landau theory of phase transitions. Various properties of such a topological glass are demonstrated using two classical Ising-like models.

On the Geometry of Discrete Exponential Families with Application to Exponential Random Graph Models

There has been an explosion of interest in statistical models for analyzing network data, and considerable interest in the class of exponential random graph (ERG) models, especially in connection with difficulties in computing maximum likelihood estimates. The issues associated with these difficulties relate to the broader structure of discrete exponential families. This paper re-examines the issues in two parts. First we consider the closure of $k$-dimensional exponential families of distribution with discrete base measure and polyhedral convex support $\mathrm{P}$. We show that the normal fan of $\mathrm{P}$ is a geometric object that plays a fundamental role in deriving the statistical and geometric properties of the corresponding extended exponential families. We discuss its relevance to maximum likelihood estimation, both from a theoretical and computational standpoint. Second, we apply our results to the analysis of ERG models. In particular, by means of a detailed example, we provide some characterization of the properties of ERG models, and, in particular, of certain behaviors of ERG models known as degeneracy.

Theory for Superconductivity in Iron Pnictides at Large Coulomb U Limit

Superconductivity in iron pnictides is studied by using a two-orbital Hubbard model in the large U limit. The Coulomb repulsion induces an orbital-dependent pairing between charge carriers. The pairing is found mainly from the scattering within the same Fermi pocket. The inter-pocket pair scatterings determine the symmetry of the superconductivity, which is extended s-wave at small Hund's coupling, and d-wave at large Hund's coupling and large U. The former is consistent with recent experiments of ARPES and Andreev reflection spectroscope.

Na4Ir3O8 as a 3D spin liquid with fermionic spinons

Spin liquid states for spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a hyperkagome lattice are studied. We classify and study flux states according to symmetries. Applying this model to Na4Ir3O8, we propose that the high temperature state may be described by a spinon Fermi surface, which forms a paired state with line nodes below 20 K. The possible mixed spin singlet and spin triplet pairing states are discussed according to the lattice symmetry which breaks inversion.

Symmetry of superconducting states with two orbitals on a tetragonal lattice: application to $LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs$

We use group theory to classify the superconducting states of systems with two orbitals on a tetragonal lattice. The orbital part of the superconducting gap function can be either symmetric or anti-symmetric. For the orbital symmetric state, the parity is even for spin singlet and odd for spin triplet; for the orbital anti-symmetric state, the parity is odd for spin singlet and even for spin triplet. The gap basis functions are obtained with the use of the group chain scheme by taking into account the spin-orbit coupling. In the weak pairing limit, the orbital anti-symmetric state is only stable for the degenerate orbitals. Possible application to iron-based superconductivity is discussed.

Hardcore bosons on checkerboard lattices near half filling: geometric frustration, vanishing charge order and fractional phase

We study a spinless hardcore boson model on checkerboard lattices by Green function Monte Carlo method. At half filling, the ground state energy is obtained up to $28\times 28$ lattice and extrapolated to infinite size, the staggered pseudospin magnetization is found to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. Thus the $(π,π)$ charge order is absent in this system. Away from half filling, two defects induced by each hole (particle) may carry fractional charge ($\pm e/2$). For one hole case, we study how the defect-defect correlation changes with $t/J$, which is the ratio between the hopping integral and cyclic exchange, equals to $V/2t$ when $V\gg t$. Moreover, we argue that these fractional defects may propagate independently when the concentration of holes (or defects) is large enough.

Even Parity, Orbital Singlet and Spin Triplet Pairing for Superconducting $La(O_{1-x}F_x)FeAs$

In the present paper, we propose the parity even, orbital singlet and spin triplet pairing state as the ground state of the newly discovered super-conductor $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$.The pairing mechanism involves both the special shape of the electron fermi surface and the strong ferromagnetic fluctuation induced by Hund's rule coupling. The special behavior of the Bogoliubov quasi-particle spectrum may leads to "Fermi arc" like anisotropy super-conducting gap, which can be detected by angle resolved photo emission(ARPES).The impurity effects are also discussed.

Comment to "Multipolar expansion of the electrostatic interaction between charged colloids at interfaces"

We present a comment to a recent paper by Dominguez et. al. They claimed that the electrostatic interaction between charged colloids trapped at an interface formed by a dielectric and a screening phase is always isotropic to order $d^-3$. Base on this result, they claimed that in-plane dipolar attraction of order $d^-3$ between colloids cannot exist, in contrast to previous proposals. We point out that their analysis is not completed and anisotropic (dipolar) interaction between colloids can exist up to order $d^-3$.

Origin of long-ranged attraction between like-charged particles at water-air interface

The nature of electrostatic interaction between like-charged particles at water-air interface is analyzed in this paper. We show that long-ranged electrostatic dipolar attraction between these objects generally exists. Our result provides a natural mechanism to explain the experimental observations of attraction between like-charge species trapped at water-air interface. We speculate that a similar (but presumably weaker) mechanism also exists for particles near water-solid interface.

Cauchy problem of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Cauchy problem of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$ for $p<2$

In this paper, we consider in $R^n$ the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$ for $p<2$. It is well known that this problem is ill posed. However, We show that after a linear transformation by the linear semigroup the problem becomes locally well posed in $W^{s,p}$ for $\frac{2n}{n+1} n(1-\frac{1}{p})$. Moreover, we show that in one space dimension, the problem is locally well posed in $L^p$ for any $1<p<2$.

Global Low Regularity Solutions of Quasi-linear Wave Equations

In this paper we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the low regularity solutions to the Cauchy problem of quasi-linear wave equations with radial symmetric initial data in three space dimensions. The results are based on the end-point Strichartz estimate together with the characteristic method.

Quantum Orders and Spin Liquids in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$

Motivated by experiments on Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ samples, we studied and classified the symmetric spin liquids on triangular lattice. We identified 63 $Z_2$ spin liquids, 30 U(1) spin liquids and 2 SU(2) spin liquids. All those spin liquids have the same symmetry but different quantum orders. We calculated the spin spectral functions in some simple spin liquids and compared them to the one measured by experiments on Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. We find that the $U1Cτ_{+}^0τ_{-}^0τ^1$ spin liquid or one of its relatives is consistent with observed properties of the spin liquid state in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. We discussed the fine distinctions among those possible spin liquids and the spin liquids proposed using slave-fermion approach, so that future experiments can determine which spin liquids actually describe the spin state in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$.

Quantum coherence of double-well BEC: a SU(2)-coherent-state path-integral approach

Macroscopic quantum coherence of Bose gas in a double-well potential is studied based on SU(2)-coherent-state path-integral. The ground state and fluctuations around it can be obtained by this method. In this picture, one can obtain macroscopic quantum superposition states for attractive Bose gas. The coherent gap of degenerate ground states is obtained with the instanton technique. The phenomenon of macroscopic quantum self-trapping is also discussed.

Quasiparticles as composite objects in the RVB superconductor

We study the nature of the superconducting state, the origin of d-wave pairing, and elementary excitations of a resonating valence bond (RVB) superconductor. We show that the phase string formulation of the t-J model leads to confinement of bare spinon and holon excitations in the superconducting state, though the vacuum is described by the RVB state. Nodal quasiparticles are obtained as composite excitations of spinon and holon excitations. The d-wave pairing symmetry is shown to arise from short range antiferromagnetic correlations.
