Pion and Kaon Distribution Amplitudes from Lattice QCD

We present the state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculation of the pion and kaon light-cone distribution amplitudes (DAs) using large-momentum effective theory. The calculation is done at three lattice spacings $a\approx\{0.06,0.09,0.12\}$ fm and physical pion and kaon masses, with the meson momenta $P_z = \{1.29,1.72,2.15\}$ GeV. The result is non-perturbatively renormalized in a recently proposed hybrid scheme with self renormalization, and extrapolated to the continuum as well as the infinite momentum limit. We find a significant deviation of the pion and kaon DAs from the asymptotic form, and a large $SU(3)$ flavor breaking effect in the kaon DA.

Low energy constant and mixed-action effect

We present the pion mass and decay constant using the overlap fermion valence on domain wall (DW) fermion sea at several lattice spacings. The mixed action effect in the lattice calculation is also studied, and the result suggests that the mixed action effect with the overlap valence on DW sea would be proportional to the fourth power of the lattice spacing. We obtain the pion decay constant at the physical pion mass and $N_f=2$ chiral limit to be $92.4(3)(2)~{\rm MeV}$ and $87.0(5)(7)~{\rm MeV}$ respectively; and the physical u/d averaged quark mass at $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ 2 GeV is $3.74(4)(5)(5)(3)~{\rm MeV}$ with the linear ${\cal O}(a^2)$ continuum extrapolation. Using the FLAG value of the NLO low energy constant, we obtain the $N_f=2$ chiral condensate to be $Σ^{\overline{\textrm{MS}}(2~{\rm GeV})}=\big(266(2)(1)~{\rm MeV}\big)^3$.

Renormalization constants of overlap quark bilinear operators from RI/MOM and RI/SMOM scheme

We calculate the renormalization constants (RCs) of vector, axial, vector scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor quark operators of the overlap valence fermion, on the 11 gauge ensembles with dynamical fermion using either Domain wall fermion~(DWF) action orHighly improved stagger quark~(HISQ) action at lattice spacings from 0.04 fm to 0.20 fm. We find the results under the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme using either the RI/MOM or RI/SMOM scheme are consistent with each other, once the proper $a^2p^2$ extrapolation is applied and the systematic uncertainties are estimated cautiously. Our results with different gauge and fermion actions also indicate that the RCs are majorly dependent on the lattice spacing (as the inverse of UV cut-off) rather than the bare gauge coupling used by the gauge action.

Glueballs at Physical Pion Mass

We study glueballs on two $N_f=2+1$ RBC/UKQCD gauge ensembles with physical quark masses at two lattice spacings. The statistical uncertainties of the glueball correlation functions are considerably reduced through the cluster decomposition error reduction (CDER) method. The Bethe-Salpeter wave functions are obtained for the scalar, tensor and pseudoscalar glueballs by using spatially extended glueball operators defined through the gauge potential $A_μ(x)$ in the Coulomb gauge. These wave functions show similar features of non-relativistic two-gluon systems, and they are used to optimize the signals of the related correlation functions at the early time regions. Consequently, the ground state masses can be extracted precisely. To the extent that the excited state contamination is not important, our calculation gives glueball masses at the physical pion mass for the first time.

Nucleon isovector scalar charge from overlap fermions

We calculate the nucleon isovector scalar charge in lattice QCD using overlap fermions on five ensembles of gauge configurations generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaboration using the domain-wall quark action with $2+1$ dynamical flavors. The five ensembles cover five pion masses, $m_π\approx$ 139, 171, 302, 337 and 371 MeV, and four lattice spacings, $a \approx $ 0.06, 0.08, 0.11 and 0.14 fm. Three to six valence quark masses are computed on each ensemble to investigate the pion mass dependence. The extrapolation to the physical pion mass, continuum and infinite volume limits is obtained by a global fit of all data to a formula originated from partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. The excited-states contamination is carefully analyzed with 3--5 sink-source separations and multi-state fits. Our final result, in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme at 2 GeV, is $g_{S}^{u-d}= 0.94 (10)_{stat}(8)_{sys}$, where the first error is the statistical error and the second is the systematic error.

Lattice Calculation of Pion Form Factor with Overlap Fermions

We present a precise calculation of the pion form factor using overlap fermions on seven ensembles of 2+1-flavor domain-wall configurations with pion masses varying from 139 to 340 MeV. Taking advantage of the fast Fourier transform and other techniques to access many combinations of source and sink momenta, we find the pion mean square charge radius to be $\langle {r_π^2} \rangle= 0.430(5)(13)\ {\rm{fm^2}}$, which agrees well with the experimental result, and includes the systematic uncertainties from chiral extrapolation, lattice spacing and finite-volume dependence. We also find that $\langle {r_π^2} \rangle$ depends on both the valence and sea quark masses strongly and predict the pion form factor up to $Q^2 = 1.0 \ {\rm{GeV^2}}$ which agrees with experiments very well.

RI/MOM renormalization of the quasi-PDF in lattice regularization

We analyze the lattice spacing dependence for the pion unpolarized matrix element of a quark bilinear operator with Wilson link (quasi-PDF operator) in the rest frame, using 13 lattice spacings ranging from 0.032 fm to 0.121 fm. We compare results for three different fermion actions with or without good chiral symmetry on dynamical gauge ensembles from three collaborations. This investigation is motivated by the fact that the gauge link generates an $1/a$ divergence, the cancelation of which in many ratios can be numerically tricky. Indeed, our results show that this cancelation deteriorates with decreasing lattice spacing, and that the RI/MOM method leaves a linearly divergent residue for quasi-PDFs. We also show that in the Landau gauge the interaction between the Wilson link and the external state results in a linear divergence which depends on the discretized fermion action.

A Demonstration of Hadron Mass Origin from QCD Trace Anomaly

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) claims that the major source of the nucleon invariant mass is not the Higgs mechanism but the trace anomaly in QCD energy momentum tensor. Although experimental and theoretical results support such conclusion, a direct demonstration is still absent. We present the first Lattice QCD calculation of the quark and gluon trace anomaly contributions to the hadron masses, using the overlap fermion on the 2+1 flavor dynamical Domain wall quark ensemble at $m_π=340$ MeV and lattice spacing $a=$0.1105 fm. The result shows that the gluon trace anomaly contributes to most of the nucleon mass, and the contribution in the pion state is smaller than that in others nearly by a factor $\sim$10 since the gluon trace anomaly density inside pion is different from the other hadrons and the magnitude is much smaller. The gluon trace anomaly coefficient $β/g^3=-0.056(6)$ we obtained is consistent with its regularization independent leading order value $(-11+\frac{2N_f}{3})/(4π)^2$ perfectly.

Linking continuum and lattice quark mass functions via an effective charge

The quark mass function is computed both by solving the quark propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation and from lattice simulations implementing overlap and Domain-Wall fermion actions for valence and sea quarks, respectively. The results are confronted and seen to produce a very congruent picture, showing a remarkable agreement for the explored range of current-quark masses. The effective running-interaction is based on a process-independent charge rooted on a particular truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the gauge sector, establishing thus a link from there to the quark sector and inspiring a correlation between the emergence of gluon and hadron masses.

Gluons in charmoniumlike states

The mass components of charmoniumlike states are investigated through the decomposition of QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT) on lattice. The quark mass contribution $\langle H_m\rangle$ and the momentum fraction $\langle x\rangle$ of valence charm quark and antiquark are calculated for conventional $1S,1P,1D$ charmonia and the exotic $1^{-+}$ charmoniumlike state, based on the $N_f=2+1$ gauge configurations generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaboration. It is found that $\langle H_m\rangle$ is close to each other and around 2.0 to 2.2 GeV for these states, which implies that the mass splittings among these states come almost from the gluon contribution of QCD trace anomaly. The $\langle x\rangle$ of the $1^{-+}$ state is only around 0.55, while that in conventional charmonia is around 0.7 to 0.8. This difference manifests that the proportion of light quarks and gluons in the $1^{-+}$ charmoniumlike state is significantly larger than conventional states.

Self-Renormalization of Quasi-Light-Front Correlators on the Lattice

In applying large-momentum effective theory, renormalization of the Euclidean correlators in lattice regularization is a challenge due to linear divergences in the self-energy of Wilson lines. Based on lattice QCD matrix elements of the quasi-PDF operator at lattice spacing $a$= 0.03 fm $\sim$ 0.12 fm with clover and overlap valence quarks on staggered and domain-wall sea, we design a strategy to disentangle the divergent renormalization factors from finite physics matrix elements, which can be matched to a continuum scheme at short distance such as dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction. Our results indicate that the renormalization factors are universal in the hadron state matrix elements. Moreover, the physical matrix elements appear independent of the valence fermion formulations. These conclusions remain valid even with HYP smearing which reduces the statistical errors albeit reducing control of the renormalization procedure. Moreover, we find a large non-perturbative effect in the popular RI/MOM and ratio renormalization scheme, suggesting favor of the hybrid renormalization procedure proposed recently.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

A Hybrid Renormalization Scheme for Quasi Light-Front Correlations in Large-Momentum Effective Theory

In large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), calculating parton physics starts from calculating coordinate-space-$z$ correlation functions $\tilde h(z, a,P^z)$ in a hadron of momentum $P^z$ in lattice QCD. Such correlation functions involve both linear and logarithmic divergences in lattice spacing $a$, and thus need to be properly renormalized. We introduce a hybrid renormalization procedure to match these lattice correlations to those in the continuum $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, without introducing extra non-perturbative effects at large $z$. We analyze the effect of ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ ambiguity in the Wilson line self-energy subtraction involved in this hybrid scheme. To obtain the momentum-space distributions, we recommend to extrapolate the lattice data to the asymptotic $z$-region using the generic properties of the coordinate space correlations at moderate and large $P^z$, respectively.

Isovector parton distribution functions of the proton on a superfine lattice

We study isovector unpolarized and helicity parton distribution functions (PDF) of the proton within the framework of Large Momentum Effective Theory. We use a gauge ensemble, generated by the MILC Collaboration, with a superfine lattice spacing of $0.042$ fm and a pion mass of $310$ MeV, enabling us to simultaneously reach sub-fermi spatial separations and larger nucleon momenta. We compare the spatial dependence of quasi-PDF matrix elements in different renormalization schemes with the corresponding results of the global fits, obtained using 1-loop perturbative matching. We present determinations of the first four moments of the unpolarized and helicity PDFs of proton from the Ioffe-time dependence of the isovector matrix elements, obtained by employing a ratio-based renormalization scheme.

Lattice-QCD Calculations of TMD Soft Function Through Large-Momentum Effective Theory

The transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) soft function is a key ingredient in QCD factorization of Drell-Yan and other processes with relatively small transverse momentum. We present a lattice QCD study of this function at moderately large rapidity on a 2+1 flavor CLS dynamic ensemble with $a=0.098$ fm. We extract the rapidity-independent (or intrinsic) part of the soft function through a large-momentum-transfer pseudo-scalar meson form factor and its quasi-TMD wave function using leading-order factorization in large-momentum effective theory. We also investigate the rapidity-dependent part of the soft function---the Collins-Soper evolution kernel---based on the large-momentum evolution of the quasi-TMD wave function.

Constraints on charm-anticharm asymmetry in the nucleon from lattice QCD

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the charm quark contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G^c_{E,M}(Q^2)$ in the momentum transfer range $0\leq Q^2 \leq 1.4$ $\rm GeV^2$. The quark mass dependence, finite lattice spacing and volume corrections are taken into account simultaneously based on the calculation on three gauge ensembles including one at the physical pion mass. The nonzero value of the charm magnetic moment $μ^c_M=-0.00127(38)_{\rm stat}(5)_{\rm sys}$, as well as the Pauli form factor, reflects a nontrivial role of the charm sea in the nucleon spin structure. The nonzero $G^c_{E}(Q^2)$ indicates the existence of a nonvanishing asymmetric charm-anticharm sea in the nucleon. Performing a nonperturbative analysis based on holographic QCD and the generalized Veneziano model, we study the constraints on the $[c(x)-\bar{c}(x)]$ distribution from the lattice QCD results presented here. Our results provide complementary information and motivation for more detailed studies of physical observables that are sensitive to intrinsic charm and for future global analyses of parton distributions including asymmetric charm-anticharm distribution.

Ratio of strange to $u/d$ momentum fraction in disconnected insertions

The ratio of the strange quark momentum fraction $\langle x\rangle_{s+\bar{s}}$ to that of light quark $u$ or $d$ in disconnected insertions (DI) is calculated on the lattice with overlap fermions on four domain wall fermion ensembles. These ensembles cover three lattice spacings, three volumes and several pion masses including the physical one, from which a global fitting is carried out. A complete nonperturbative renormalization and the mixing between the quark and glue operators are taken into account. We find the ratio to be $\langle x\rangle_{s+\bar{s}}/\langle x\rangle_{u+\bar{u}} ({\rm DI})=0.795(79)(77)$ at $μ= 2$ GeV in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. This ratio can be used as a constraint to better determine the strange parton distribution especially in the small $x$ region in the global fittings of PDFs when the connected and disconnected sea are fitted and evolved separately, demonstrating a new way that connects lattice calculations with global analyses.

Roper State from Overlap Fermions

The Roper state is extracted with valence overlap fermions on a $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion lattice (spacing $a = 0.114$ fm and $m_π = 330$ MeV) using both the Sequential Empirical Bayes (SEB) method and the variational method. The results are consistent, provided that a large smearing-size interpolation operator is included in the variational calculation to have better overlap with the lowest radial excitation. Similar calculations carried out for an anisotropic clover lattice with similar parameters find the Roper $\approx 280$ MeV higher than that of the overlap fermion. The fact that the prediction of the Roper state by overlap fermions is consistently lower than those of clover fermions, chirally improved fermions, and twisted-mass fermions over a wide range of pion masses has been dubbed a "Roper puzzle." To understand the origin of this difference, we study the hairpin $Z$-diagram in the isovector scalar meson ($a_0$) correlator in the quenched approximation. Comparing the $a_0$ correlators for clover and overlap fermions, at a pion mass of 290 MeV, we find that the spectral weight of the ghost state with clover fermions is smaller than that of the overlap at $a = 0.12$ fm and $0.09$ fm, whereas the whole $a_0$ correlators of clover and overlap at $a = 0.06$ fm coincide within errors. This suggests that chiral symmetry is restored for clover at $a \le 0.06$ fm and that the Roper should come down at and below this $a$. We conclude that this work supports a resolution of the "Roper puzzle" due to $Z$-graph type chiral dynamics. This entails coupling to higher components in the Fock space (e.g. $Nπ$, $Nππ$ states) to induce the effective flavor-spin interaction between quarks as prescribed in the chiral quark model, resulting in the parity-reversal pattern as observed in the experimental excited states of $N, Δ$ and $Λ$.
