Collective excitations in two-dimensional SU($N$) Fermi gases with tunable spin

We measure collective excitations of a harmonically trapped two-dimensional (2D) SU($N$) Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb confined to a stack of layers formed by a one-dimensional optical lattice. Quadrupole and breathing modes are excited and monitored in the collisionless regime $\lvert\ln(k_F a_{2D})\rvert\gg 1$ with tunable spin. We observe that the quadrupole mode frequency decreases with increasing number of spin components due to the amplification of the interaction effect by $N$ in agreement with a theoretical prediction based on 2D kinetic equations. The breathing mode frequency, however, is measured to be twice the dipole oscillation frequency regardless of $N$. We also follow the evolution of collective excitations in the dimensional crossover from two to three dimensions and characterize the damping rate of quadrupole and breathing modes for tunable SU($N$) fermions, both of which reveal the enhanced inter-particle collisions for larger spin. Our result paves the way to investigate the collective property of 2D SU($N$) Fermi liquid with enlarged spin.

Two-fluid theory for superfluid system with anisotropic effective masses

In this work, we generalize the two-fluid theory to a superfluid system with anisotropic effective masses along different principal axis directions. As a specific example, such a theory can be applied to spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at low temperature. The normal density from phonon excitations and the second sound velocity are obtained analytically. Near the phase transition from the plane wave to zero-momentum phases, due to the effective mass divergence, the normal density from phonon excitation increases greatly, while the second sound velocity is suppressed significantly. With quantum hydrodynamic formalism, we give unified derivations for suppressed superfluid density and Josephson relation. At last, the momentum distribution function and fluctuation of phase for the long wave length are also discussed.

Studies of Single Component Fermi Gas near a $P$-wave Resonance with Lowest Order Constrained Variational Method

We study single component Fermi gas near a $p$-wave resonance with the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method. We obtain the energy per particle for the ground state of single component Fermi gas near a $p$-wave resonance with LOCV method. We also calculate compressibility of the single component Fermi gas near a $p$-wave resonance and it shows that near the $p$-wave resonance, the system would lose its stability and collapse. The two $p$-wave contacts are also obtained and their variation tendencies with interaction strength are consistent with recent experimental results.

Generalized Josephson relation for conserved charges in multi-component bosons

The Josephson relation is generalized for conserved charges in multi-component bosons. With linear response theory, a formula for derivation of generalized superfluid density is given. When there are several conserved charges, the superfluid density is generally a second order tensor in internal spin space. When the rank of Green's function matrix is one, Josephson relation is given explicitly with phase operator method. For two-component bosons, with quantum field theory, we show a generalized Hugenholtz-Pines relation hold and existence of two gapless phonons. When the interactions are $U(2)$ invariant, we show there is a gapless quadratic dispersion excitation no matter how strong the interactions are. The corresponding generalized Josephson relation is expressed with Green's function matrix elements.

Strongly Interacting p-wave Fermi Gas in Two-Dimensions: Universal Relations and Breathing Mode

The contact is an important concept that characterizes the universal properties of a strongly interacting quantum gas. It appears in both thermodynamic (energy, pressure, etc.) and dynamic quantities (radio-frequency and Bragg spectroscopies, etc.) of the system. Very recently, the concept of contact has been extended to higher partial waves, in particular, the p-wave contacts have been experimentally probed in recent experiment. So far discussions on p-wave contacts have been limited to three-dimensions. In this paper, we generalize the p-wave contacts to two-dimensions and derive a series of universal relations, including the adiabatic relations, high momentum distribution, virial theorem and pressure relation. At high temperature and low density limit, we calculated the p-wave contacts explicitly using virial expansion. A formula which directly connects the shift of the breathing mode frequency and the p-wave contacts are given in a harmonically trapped system. Finally, we also derive the relationships between interaction parameters in three and two dimensional Fermi gas and discuss possible experimental realization of two dimensional Fermi gas with p-wave interactions.

Collective Modes in a Two-band Superfluid of Ultracold Alkaline-earth Atoms Close to an Orbital Feshbach Resonance

We discuss the collective modes in an alkaline-earth Fermi gas close to an orbital Feshbach resonance. Unlike the usual Feshbach resonance, the orbital Feshbach resonance in alkaline-earth atoms realizes a two-band superfluid system where the fermionic nature of both the open and the closed channel has to be taken into account. We show that apart from the usual Anderson-Bogoliubov mode which corresponds to the oscillation of total density, there also appears the long-sought Leggett mode corresponding to the oscillation of relative density between the two channels. The existence of the phonon and the Leggett modes and their evolution are discussed in detail. We show how these collective modes are reflected in the density response of the system.

Superfluid Density of a Spin-orbit Coupled Bose Gas

We discuss the superfluid properties of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas with spin-orbit coupling, recently realized in experiments. We find a finite normal fluid density $ρ_n$ at zero temperature which turns out to be a function of the Raman coupling. In particular, the entire fluid becomes normal at the transition point from the zero momentum to the plane wave phase, even though the condensate fraction remains finite. We emphasize the crucial role played by the gapped branch of the elementary excitations and discuss its contributions to various sum rules. Finally, we prove that an independent definition of superfluid density $ρ_s$, using the phase twist method, satisfies the equality $ρ_n+ρ_s=ρ$, the total density, despite the breaking of Galilean invariance.

Topological Superfluids and BEC-BCS Crossover in Attractive Haldane-Hubbard Model

Motivated by the recent realization of the Haldane model in shaking optical lattice, we investigate the effects of attractive interaction and BEC-BCS crossover in this model at and away from half filling. We show that, contrary to the usual s-wave BEC-BCS crossover in the lattice, a topological superfluid with Chern number C=2 appears in an extended region of phase space for intermediate strength of the attractive interaction in the interaction-density plane. When inversion symmetry is broken, a new gapless topological state is realized. We also investigate the fluctuations in these superfluid phases and show that the Anderson-Bogoliubov mode is quadratic due to time-reversal symmetry breaking and the existence of an undamped Leggett mode in the strong coupling limit.

Tuning a magnetic Feshbach resonance with spatially modulated laser light

We theoretically investigate the control of a magnetic Feshbach resonance using a bound-to-bound molecular transition driven by spatially modulated laser light. Due to the spatially periodic coupling between the ground and excited molecular states, there exists a band structure of bound states, which can uniquely be characterized by some extra bumps in radio-frequency spectroscopy. With the increasing of coupling strength, the series of bound states will cross zero energy and directly result in a number of scattering resonances, whose position and width can be conveniently tuned by the coupling strength of the laser light and the applied magnetic field (i.e., the detuning of the ground molecular state). In the presence of the modulated laser light, universal two-body bound states near zero-energy threshold still exist. However, compared with the case without modulation, the regime for such universal states is usually small. An unified formula which embodies the influence of the modulated coupling on the resonance width is given. The spatially modulated coupling also implies a local spatially varying interaction between atoms. Our work proposes a practical way of optically controlling interatomic interactions with high spatial resolution and negligible atomic loss.

Excitation Spectra and Hard-core Thermodynamics of Bosonic Atoms In Double Well Optical Lattices

A general coupled representation is proposed for bosonic atoms in double well optical lattices. Based on such a representation, we investigate the excitation spectra and thermodynamics of bosonic atoms in the optical lattices. We find excitation spectra of the double well system with filling factor equal to one can be described by simultaneous excitations composed of pseudo particles corresponding to doubly occupied and empty double wells. It is demonstrated that hard-core bosonic statistics must be taken into account in order to properly describe the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. For this we calculate the temperature dependence curves of particle numbers and heat capacity, in which the hard-core features are clearly shown. At last, the cases with filling factors unequal to one are also briefly discussed.

Fragmentation of Spin-orbit Coupled Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

The fragmentation of spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose gas with a weak interaction in external harmonic trap is explored by both exact diagonalization and mean-field theory. This fragmentation tendency, which originates from the total angular momentum conservation, is affected obviously by the spin-orbit coupling strength and the spin-dependent interaction. Strong spin-orbit interaction raises the inverse participation ratio, which describes the number of significantly occupied single-particle states. As the spin-dependent interaction changes from anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, the peak values in the inverse participation ratio become lower. Without the confinement of the appointed total angular momentum, the condensate chooses a zero or finite total angular momentum ground state, which is determined by both the interaction and the spin-orbit coupling strength.

The confinement induced resonance in spin-orbit coupled cold atoms with Raman coupling

We investigate the confinement induced resonance in spin-orbit coupled cold atoms with Raman coupling. We find that the quasi-bound levels induced by the spin-orbit coupling and Raman coupling result in the Feshbach-type resonances. For sufficiently large Raman coupling, the bound states in one dimension exist only for sufficiently strong attractive interaction. Furthermore, the bound states in quasi-one dimension exist only for sufficient large ratio of the length scale of confinement to three dimensional s-wave scattering length. The Raman coupling substantially changes the confinement-induced resonance position. We give a proposal to realize confinement induced resonance by increasing the Raman coupling strength in experiments.

Zitterbewegung effect in spin-orbit coupled spin-1 ultracold atoms

The Zitterbewegung effect in spin-orbit coupled spin-1 cold atoms is investigated in the presence of the Zeeman field and a harmonic trap. It is shown that the Zeeman field and the harmonic trap have significant effect on the Zitterbewegung oscillatory behaviors. The external Zeeman field could suppress or enhance the Zitterbewegung amplitude and change the frequencies of oscillation. A much slowly damping Zitterbewegung oscillation can be achieved by adjusting both the linear and quadratic Zeeman field. Multi-frequency Zitterbewegung oscillation can be induced by the applied Zeeman field. In the presence of the harmonic trap, the subpackets corresponding to different eigenenergies would always keep coherent, resulting in the persistent Zitterbewegung oscillations. The Zitterbewegung oscillation would display very complicated and irregular oscillation characteristics due to the coexistence of different frequencies of the Zitterbewegung oscillation. Numerical results show that, the Zitterbewegung effect is robust even in the presence of interaction between atoms.

Spin-orbit coupling induced separation and hidden spin textures in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We analytically and numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in an external parabolic potential. When the spin-orbit coupling strength $κ$ is comparable with that of the trapping potential, the density distribution centers of different components of the spinor condensate deviate evidently from the trap center in the plane wave and stripe phases. When $κ\gg1$, the magnitude of this deviation decreases as $κ$ is getting larger and larger. Correspondingly, periphery half-skyrmions textures arise. This deviation can be reflected by the non-uniform magnetic moment in the $z$ direction, $\mathcal{F}_z$. With the manipulation of the external trap, the local magnitude of $\mathcal{F}_z$ can be increased evidently. This kind of increase of $\mathcal{F}_z$ is also observed in the square vortex lattice phase of the condensate.

Particle-hole bound states of dipolar molecules in optical lattice

We investigate the particle-hole pair excitations of dipolar molecules in optical lattice, which can be described with an extended Bose-Hubbard model. For strong enough dipole-dipole interaction, the particle-hole pair excitations can form bound states in one and two dimensions. With decreasing dipole-dipole interaction, the energies of the bound states increase and merge into the particle-hole continuous spectrum gradually. The existence regions, the energy spectra and the wave functions of the bound states are carefully studied and the symmetries of the bound states are analyzed with group theory. For a given dipole-dipole interaction, the number of bound states varies in momentum space and a number distribution of the bound states is illustrated. We also discuss how to observe these bound states in future experiments.
